Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this FA Cup, Extra Preliminary Round tie against our friends from Atherton Collieries. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It has been a mixed week since we last convened here at Brocstedes Park for the visit of Alsager.Town this saw us come down to earth with a bump as after a pretty even first half which saw both sides have one golden opportunity each to net the second half belonged to the visitors who caught the hosts on the counter and secured a deserved 4-0 win on an afternoon when St Helens Town fell below the two previous performances they had turned in up to that point this season. We then took the long visit to Bacup to take on a Bacup & Rossendale Borough team who had secured their fist victory of the season in emphatic style at Runcorn Town whilst we were falling to defeat. The game started off well for the visitors who shy of a good opening for the hosts dominated the early exchanges and took a deserved lead on 19 minutes when Marcus Perry netted a fine finish after a swift counter attack found him in space on the right of the area. Just before the interval Aaron Morris was at it again as he intercepted a through ball in his own half and then drove from box to box playing a one-two with Paul Cook-Hannah on the edge of the hosts area before curling his effort home to double the visitors lead. The second half started in much the same fashion with Town on top but similar to Saturday they were caught on the counter twice as Matthew Bryan supplied first Adrian Bellamy and then Martin Cosgrave at the far post to restore parity just after the hour mark and at this stage there looked to be only one winner. Thankfully Town had other ideas and the with the introduction of last seasons top scorer Andy Gillespie in his first appearance after breaking his cheek bone on Easter Monday the tables turned on the hosts. Karl Bergqvist put Town back in the lead on 72 minutes and a couple of minutes later Gillespie fired home to make a quick return to the scoring charts and late on in the contest with the hosts trying to get back into it Town rubbed salt into the Bacup wounds as Bergqvist netted his second at the start of added on time and completed his hat-trick just before the final whistle to complete the comeback and ensure that Town bounced back from the disappointment on Saturday rising to 5th in table in the process. This afternoons visitors have been on fine form at the start of the season as they currently sit atop the First Division having won their first three match of the season and have a goal difference of 11, having won 6-0 against Litherland REMYCA on Saturday after a 5-1 win the previous Monday against Wigan Robin Park and an opening day 2-1 win at much fancied Cammell Laird, with the amount of goals in the recent Town contests I think a 0-0 scoreline today would be very doubtful! If this afternoons contest is level at the end of 90 minutes then the sides will replay at Alder House on Monday with a 7.45pm kick off. Please keep an eye on Runcorn Townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s FA Cup result this afternoon as if there is a result either way here and Runcorn draw then we will have no midweek contest. In Town Today Atherton Collieries Football Club was founded in 1916 in the dark days of World War One, by enthusiastic miners from six pits then operative within the old Urban District Council of Atherton. Since then the club has sometimes struggled to survive and sometimes flourished in many of the senior non-league competitions of the North West. During the 1920’s when top ranking Bolton Wanderers were short of a player, they only had to whistle down a local pit for a “Collier” to surface and prove himself. Two players, Howarth and Butler, joined Wanderers and gained six FA Cup medals. A noted player of the late 1930’s was Canon Reg Smith, ex-President of the North West Counties League and Vice-Chairman of Bury AFC, who is now, unfortunately, deceased. Atherton Collieries were renown in Lancashire and by the 1964/65 season, had won the Lancashire Junior Shield six times, a record which is unsurpassed until now. In 1971 the club were able to take advantage of vacancies in the now defunct Lancashire Combination and in 1978 joined a number of clubs moving to the newly formed Division Two of the Cheshire County League, where they remained until becoming founder members of the North West Counties League in 1982. In 1986/87, Atherton Collieries became the last ever winners of the North West Counties Division Three, the League being reorganised in the summer of 1987 to just two Divisions. In a thrilling finish to the season Colls needed to win their final match to pip Flixton to the title. With the demise of coalmining in the area, and indeed, the whole country, and with ever spiralling unemployment, finance has become a nightmare for club officials. However, clubs are aware that in the non-league pyramid ladder, continuous ground improvement is a priority if they are to stay within the system. To this end, steady progress has been made to the ground and the clubhouse and in 1994 floodlights were erected. On the pitch Colls began the 1990’s in bottom place, but every year after that finished in a higher position than the season before. In 1994/95 they finished in fourth place, reached the final of the North West Counties League Floodlit Trophy and won the NWCL Fair Play award for Division Two. However, this was surpassed the following season when the club finished as runners up in Division Two and with their ground passing the grading requirements, they were able to take their place in Division One. Since their promotion to Division One, Colls have had a varied time of things. Some seasons they have found things difficult whilst others have been reasonably successful. Their best season came in 1999/2000 when Colls finished in 13th place. Things are not made easy with the financial constraints on clubs generally in the area and are made even harder with the activities of local youths. With ground grading being of equal importance these days, the Atherton Collieries committee has worked hard to bring their ground up to the standards required for Division One but their desire to improve their facilities further is hampered by vandalism at their Alder Street ground. Time and money which should and could be spent on improving facilities for players and supporters alike, is often diverted to repair the latest damage caused at the ground.

In 2001/02 Atherton Collieries reached the final of the League Cup for the first time. The run to the final began at Fleetwood where a solitary Martin Sloan goal was enough to see them through. An excellent win at Congleton followed before a daunting trip to Newcastle Town in the quarter finals. Colls had travelled to the Lyme Valley Stadium a month before for a League game and suffered a 4-0 reverse so the omens weren’t very good, but a 90th minute Ryan Cain goal saw them go through to the semi-finals 2-1. They were drawn against a strong Kidsgrove Athletic side which was on its way to taking the League title and promotion to the Unibond League. In their quarter final match Kidsgrove

Atherton Collieries had put six past Great Harwood without reply, so most people expected Kidsgrove to reach the final. Collieries had different ideas though and Gary Crompton gave them a 23rd minute lead before Richard Mitchell equalised. Just after the break Adam Lawrence restored Colls lead only for Mitchell to level again and just as a draw was looking likely Paul Vandenberg put Colls ahead for a third time and there was no time for Kidsgrove to respond. Kidsgrove battled hard in the second leg, but Colls held firm and two minutes from time Stuart Shepherd scored to seal the tie and Colls were in the final. At Buryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gigg Lane ground Colls met Prescot Cables and while on the day Prescot came out winners, Colls didn't disgrace themselves and with a little more luck in front of goal things could have been different. That same season Colls had another cup final to enjoy when they reached the final of the Goldline Trophy at Bolton Wanderers Reebok Stadium. They met Charnock Richard from the West Lancs League and in a closely fought game Colls came out 1-0 winners. The following season they reached the final for a second time, but this time had to settle for runners up medals. Colls suffered mixed fortunes during their tenure in Division One. Their best season came in 2006-07 when they finished in seventh place under Phil Brown. During 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons Anthony Pilkington made 35 appearances for the club scoring 19 goals. He subsequently has played for Stockport County, Huddersfield Town and Norwich City. After struggling at the wrong end of the table at the start of the noughties and having survived on a couple of occasions due to Unibond League expansions the club were eventually relegated at the end of the 2008/09 campaign. Steve Pilling was appointed manager in August 2009 and in 2010/11 the club won their first NWCFL silverware for decades when AFC Liverpool were beaten 3-2 (aet) in the First Division Trophy Final. Season 2011/12 saw the club finish fourth in Division one but another trophy was added to the honours board. The Bolton Hospital Cup was won for the first time in twenty five years with a penalty shootout triumph over Eagley. The Reebok final had ended 2-2. Seasons 2012/13 and 2013/14 saw the team lead the NWCFL First Division in the early stages but fall away towards the end. Steve was a committed servant to the club and in his five seasons at the club the team finished in 6th, 5th, 4th, 4th and 5th position respectively. Michael Clegg took over the managerial reins at the start of this campaign. He had previously enjoyed stints at near neighbours Pennington and Atherton LR and with the help of strong backroom support and local players he is endeavouring to get Atherton Collieries back into the NWCL top flight, now with more to aim for with a third promotion place being added this term. From the Chair Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for the FA Challenge Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie against friends and near neighbours Atherton Collieries. We extend a warm welcome to their players, officials and supporters along with today’s match officials and our own home following. It’s been a bright start to the season for both sides and today’s clash, the first ever in the FA Cup, looks to have to hallmarks of a cracking game. Colls currently head the Division One table and I am sure they will be making promotion to the top flight a priority even if it’s ultimately via the play-offs (or Emil’s play-offs - following strenuous work by the Atherton Secretary over a number of years eventually paid off this summer and the NWCFL member clubs voted to introduce a Division 1 3rd promotion place via a play-off including teams who finish in league places 2-6! For Town, Wednesday evening’s trip to Bacup and Rossendale Borough saw them record their third win in four outings courtesy of a 2-6 win; the club’s first win at West View since 2006. It was an eventful evening which is reported on in full elsewhere in today’s programme. The game saw the return of Andy Gillespie who has been side lined since his head injury at the end of last season - Andy has been limited in what he’s been able to do over the summer and took to the field on Wednesday wearing a borrowed ‘head-guard’ (from Saints star Jonny Lomax who is a friend of Andy’s). While Andy did get on the score sheet with a fine effort the plaudits went to Karl Bergqvist who netted a hattrick. With £1500 on offer to today’s winners the FA Cup provides and opportunity for club’s at our level to earn some much needed prize money and of course a place in the Preliminary Round where Radcliffe Borough await. Off the field we have had a brilliant summer with lots of new sponsors and I am delighted to confirm that this week Jewson have agreed to their support to our newly formed Under 21s. Their sponsorship will see the players kitted out with new tracksuits and warm-up kit. We are staring to get together a number of player sponsors and I shall start to collate these alongside player pen pictures in future issues. We still have plenty of player sponsorships available for just £50 which includes a programme advert and lots of website and social media exposure. In addition we are always on the look-out for match and ball sponsors with some great packages available from £50. Please see me at any game or call me on 07713 339 682. Our best wishes go to Tom Lightbody who underwent a procedure on an in-growing toe nail this week which looks like keeping him out for a number of weeks. Neil Hulme returned to the side midweek after missing last Saturday’s defeat to Alsager due to ‘best man’ duties and we will also welcome back Chad Whyte who has been absent since making a scoring debut at Maine Road due to holiday commitments. A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league.

Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop.

Following the demolition of the Knowsley Road ground in Soccer Club Swap Shop National Awards 2010, Town have led a nomadic existence up the road in 2010-11 Placed 28th Ashton-in-Makerfield, sharing Ashton Town’s Edge Green 2011-12 Placed 8th Street ground for three seasons before moving across town 2012-13 Placed 7th to Brocstedes Park as the guests of Ashton Athletic in 2012. 2013-14 Placed 8th The current season is scheduled to be the club’s last in exile, as plans are in place for re-location back to St. Helens for the 2015-16 season at the Council-owned Ruskin Park site, currently undergoing massive redevelopment and a brand-new facility awaits. NWCFL News Ashton Athletic will host a charity challenge match tomorrow, Sunday 17th August at Brocstedes Park, with all proceeds from the event being donated to Cancer Research UK. The game will be contested between two over 30s teams from Ashton Athletic and Garswood, and the winning team will be awarded the Nina Pilling Memorial Trophy, in memory of the wife of former Ashton Athletic player and assistant manager Steve Pilling, who lost her battle with cancer in October last year.

The event was organised by former Ashton Athletic and Atherton Colls striker Paul Townsend, who has raised thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK over the past few years through organising charity bike rides and other events. He began his fund raising efforts for the charity after his mum died of cancer. Paul explained: "Steve has supported several of the fund raising events I've organised in the past, and I suggested to him it would be a good idea to do something in memory of Nina, and at the same time raise some more money for Cancer Research UK. "Once he agreed to go with the idea, we contacted Ashton Athletic Chairman Jimmy Whyte, who gave us dates of when the ground would be available, and it all went from there".

Steve, who is currently assistant manager at Atherton LR, said: "We've contacted former players from Ashton Athletic and Garswood and have organised squads to represent both clubs. The rule is that anyone taking part must be over 30 and have played for either club, although there are a few over 40s, including me, who will be turning out as well". The gates will open at 1 pm, with the game kicking off at 2 pm. As well as the football, there will be a bouncy castle and face painting for children, a barbecue, and various stalls. Entry is by donation at the turnstile. Glossop North End goalkeeper Greg Hall was presented with the Reusch Goalkeeper of the Year Award for season 2013/14, prior to the game against AFC Blackpool on Saturday. As part of the League's sponsorship agreement with German goalkeeping brand Reusch, the winning goalkeepers from the Premier Division and First Division receive a yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sponsorship from Reusch throughout season 2014/15. Greg won the award for the Premier Division while Matt Conkie of 1874 Northwich won the First Division Award. St Helens Town in the Today’s Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup brings Town together with Atherton Collieries for the first time in the competition. The clubs have met in matches on many previous occasions, starting back in 1950 when goals from Leadbetter and Garner could not stop Town falling to a 5-2 defeat. The two clubs first NWCFL meeting was back in season 1996-97 and proved to be a strange affair which saw Town hit four first half goals at Alder House but go down 7-4. The last meeting between the two clubs as back in March 2009 when a Tommy Baker goal earned Town a point in a 1-1 draw at Knowsley Road, Prize money of £1500 awaits today’s winners, as well as a Preliminary Round tie away to Radcliffe Borough Town have featured regularly in the First Qualifying Round since the club was reformed in 1946. Their reformation actually resulted in a false start as they were unable to raise a side against Prescot Cables that season and forfeited the tie but their debut in the competition came the following season in 1947/48 which resulted in a loss again to Cables but in 1948/49, they won through three rounds, including a 1-0 win at Formby, but Bangor City (a frequent stumbling block over the next few years) won 3-0 at Hoghton Road in the Second Qualifying Round. The following year, in Bert Trautmann’s final match for Town, Bangor City again won 3-0 at Hoghton Road, in the First Qualifying Round. In 1952/53, a trip to Bangor resulted in a 2-0 defeat and the following year the clubs met again in the Preliminary Round at City Road: the game ended 2-2, but Town lost the replay 5-1. The next occasion Town reached the First Qualifying Round was in 1957/58, when they lost 3-5 at home to Llandudno and the same team put Town out the following season at the Council Field, this time by 3-0. Between 1961/62 and 1970/71, Town had the good fortune to avoid the Preliminary Round altogether, but only three times did they progress to the Second Qualifying Round, where they lost at Altrincham (4-1 in 1964/65) and at home twice to Skelmersdale United, 0-3 in 1965/66 and 0-1 in 1968/69. Prescot Cables (twice), Ashton United (twice), Earlestown, Rhyl, Chorley, Droylsden and Rossendale United were our conquerors in between. Skelmersdale again, Rhyl once more, New Brighton, Oswestry (after two replays) and Macclesfield accounted for Town at the First Qualifying stage in the remaining years of the 1970s. The 1980s was undoubtedly the best decade for Town in the FA Cup. In 1980/81, wins at Southport (3-1) and Leyland Motors (4-0) set up a Third Qualifying Round clash against Fleetwood Town at Hoghton Road, but Town went out 0-1. Although a 4-0 defeat at home to Bootle in 1982/83 was a disappointing result, two years later a 2-0 win over Congleton led to a

FA Challenge Cup Second Qualifying Round game at Formby, where another 1-0 defeat was the order of the day. 1985/86 saw Town get within touching distance of the First Round Proper when wins at Colwyn Bay by 3 -0, at home to Eastwood Hanley (2-0) and at Leek Town (1-0) took Town to the Fourth Qualifying Round for the first and only time in their history. Morecambe were the opponents and a 1-1 draw was achieved at Christie Park. York City awaited the winners in the First Round but, sadly, Town slipped to a 1-0 home defeat in the replay. The Second Qualifying Round was reached again the following year (Town’s FA Vase winning season) when, having thumped Heanor Town 6-0, Armthorpe Welfare were the winners in another Hoghton Road replay. 1987/88 saw another memorable campaign as Town reached the Third Qualifying Round, going out 2-3 at Northwich Victoria, having seen off Ilkeston after two replays and Horwich RMI after another drawn game. The last two decades have seen only modest progress by Town in the premier knock-out competition. On only 4 occasions since 1987 have St. Helens reached the Second Qualifying Round and every time the club has been beaten. In 1993/94, there was a 2-1 defeat at Knowsley United, Ryhope CA won 2-1 in 1997/98, Droylsden 6-0 in 1998/99 and, most recently, in 2005/06, having defeated Crook Town 3-0 in the Preliminary Round and Northallerton Town 3-2 away after a 3-3 home draw, Alfreton Town were 2-0 winners at Knowsley Road. Town are pictured opposite as part of the BBCs Road to Wembley when Everton’s Dave Watson came to Hoghton Road with the famous trophy prior to Town’s tie with Bootle. The last three seasons have been disappointing, in 2011-12 Town slipped to a disappointing 0-2 home defeat to bottom club Atherton LR in the Extra Preliminary Round at Edge Green Street. In 2012-13 they were routed 1-5 when Division One side Abbey Hey (above) were the visitors at the same stage. Last season we met landlords Ashton Athletic (opposite) and following a 2-2 draw as the ‘home’ side Town bowed out following a 1-0 replay defeat.

Just prior to this in season 2009-10, they went out after extra time in a Preliminary Round replay at Glossop, the drawn game proving to be Town’s last ever at Knowsley Road, having overcome Nostell Miners Welfare in a penalty shoot-out after extra time could not split the teams in the home replay. In 2008-09, Town made the First Qualifying Round, beating Parkgate 3-1 and then Colwyn Bay 4-2 in a famous victory at Llanelian Road, before falling 1-3 to Cammell Laird. GLYN JONES
