Talk of the Town Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road, for this Vodkat League Premier Division contest against Atherton LR. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Atherton LR to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this evening. There has been plenty of action since we were last here at Knowsley Road we have had ups and downs. We fell to a 3-1 home defeat against Newcastle Town and relinquished top spot. We then visited Colwyn Bay in the FA Cup very much in hope rather than expectation being underdogs against a team reputed to be paying a great deal out on their side and which included former Tranmere Rovers defender Dave Challinor. We had to pinch ourselves when we were 3-0 up after an hour, definitely an “up” some 20 minutes later we were holding on at 3-2 but a late Rob Hanley goal saw us advance to meet Cammell Lairds in the next round this coming Saturday. We suffered another down on Saturday as we visited Padiham in the FA Vase and our hoodoo in this competition continued as we fell at the first hurdle for the fourth consecutive season after an awful first half performance secured Town’s fate. So to this evening’s match against Atherton LR, we were soundly beaten by this evenings visitors last season both home and away conceding ten goals in the two encounters. The visitors are in a similar position to Town with a disappointing Vase defeat behind them on Saturday and are looking forward to an FA Cup tie this coming Saturday when they face Congleton Town. However neither side will be overlooking the importance of getting a good result going into Saturday’s ties.

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this evening’s Vodkat Premier Division clash with our friends from Atherton LR. Let’s hope they’ve had a pleasant journey and enjoy their short stay with us. It’s been a week or so of mixed fortunes on the field with the lads battling hard two weeks ago against one of the title favourites Newcastle Town. On that occasion our visitors proved too strong and ran out 1-3 winners. A few days later Town travelled, as underdogs, to Colwyn Bay in the FA Cup where a superb performance saw them run out 4-2 winners. Despite a late rally from our Welsh hosts reports were clear that Town had dominated much of the encounter with some slick passing and cool finishes. I must thank Matt for his Blog match report and video highlights as bad planning on my behalf meant I missed the fixture due to holidays!! Last Tuesday saw the late postponement of our planned league fixture at Formby, despite a couple of early pitch inspections the match referee deemed the pitch unplayable shortly after 6pm. Saturday saw us exit the FA Vase at the first time of asking, losing 4-3 at Padiham in a game thrown away in the opening ten minutes when sloppy passing and needless free kicks gave the home side an unassailable lead. Despite a dominant second half performance from Town it wasn’t to be and we are left to rue missed chances and poor defending. On Saturday we make the short journey to Kirklands, home of Cammell Lairds FC for an FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round fixture which pits us against higher league opposition once again. Let’s hope our FA Cup form continues, especially with prize money of £3000 on offer for the winners. In Town Today . . . Atherton LR were founded in 1956 as Laburnum Rovers when a group of local lads wanted to start their own team. They asked Joe Riley, elder brother of one of the lads, to help them and by the end of December 1956 they were ready to go. They were admitted into the local Briarcroft Junior League, despite the season being well under way. A decision had to be made after that first season whether the club would continue to struggle and just be a fun thing for the lads, or whether they wanted to be more successful. It was decided that they wanted to improve which meant bringing in some new faces and unfortunately some of the lads who helped start the club had to go. Success followed almost immediately as the club progressed through local Leagues and won cup competitions and Joe was persuaded to carry on into Senior Football. After a spell in the Leigh League, the club joined the Bolton Combination. More success followed, but the ground at Hag Fold prevented any further advancement, so a farmers field was found and despite footpaths criss-crossing it and duck ponds either side, hard work by everyone at the club turned this unpromising field into a football pitch. In 1966 the club moved to their new ground and were able to take their place in the First Division of the Bolton Combination. Jack Crilly succeeded Joe as Chairman and worked tirelessly for the club, supervising the erection of new changing rooms (an improvement on the old air-raid shelter they had been using) and a small social club. Jack died suddenly in 1980 and as a tribute to the work he did for the club, the ground was renamed Crilly Park. In 1980 the club joined the non-league pyramid when their application to join the Cheshire County League was accepted. A stipulation of the League was that the town had to be in the clubs name, so links with the past were retained with the new name of Atherton Laburnum Rovers. In 1982 the club became founder members of the North West Counties League, being placed in Division Two where they remained until the League was reorganised in 1987 when their facilities saw them placed in Division One. Ground improvements continued, including the erection of floodlights in 1989, allowing the club to enter the FA Cup for the first time and in 1991 the changing rooms and clubhouse were completely rebuilt. In 1992/93 the team won the League title with 106 points from 42 games and had a run of 39 consecutive games unbeaten in the League. They also won the NWCL Championship Trophy. However, there was disappointment as promotion to the UniBond League was denied them because of grading requirements. Undaunted, the team repeated their double the following season and this time were promoted. Also in 1993/94 Atherton LR reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase where they lost in a replay to Diss Town.

In Town Today . . . Two good seasons in the UniBond League saw the club make steady progress, but then financial trouble struck and the club were relegated for the first time in their history. A change of regime at the club seemed to offer hope for the future, but following a tip-off from the officials of Haslingden football club, LR's ex-officials found that bills hadn't been paid and the bank was on the verge of closing the club down. Fortunately the previous Directors shares had not yet been bought so they were able to retake control of the club and after much hard work in co-operation with the bank and various creditors, managed to keep the club afloat while the debts were paid. With little money to spend, two seasons of struggle followed and culminated in the clubs second relegation, this time to the NWCL Division Two. However, the appointment of Alan Lord as manager in November 2000 brought about a remarkable transformation and after nine straight victories, they won promotion back to Division One in their final game of the season. In November 2002 Tom Foster and Denis Haslem took over as joint managers and set about rebuilding the team as all but three first team players left the club within two weeks. After three months of struggle, the new team ended the season unbeaten in their final eight games to earn a mid-table position. Denis Haslem moved on in the summer of 2003 to take over the helm at West Lancashire side Stoneclough and the experienced Ian Street joined the club as assistant manager. 2003/04 season saw LR finish in a comfortable mid-table position without a relegation fight for the first time in a while and the club picked up two pieces of silverware. LR won the Goldline Trophy and a few weeks later the Bolton Hospital Cup both at the Reebok Stadium. LR successfully defended the Goldline Trophy in season 04/5 and the club finished in 15th place. However Foster and Street left the club at the end of the season. Eventually after some traumatic twists Mike Lester and Darren Ford became the mew management team at Crilly Park. Last term saw dramatic events at Crilly Park as the side had no less than four managers taking the helm. The cub only just managed to avoid relegation after some good results early in the season. Mark Cox was appointed manager in the summer for the LR Golden Jubilee season. However drama is never faraway at LR and he quit in February 2007 and Roy Sweeny was handed the reigns with Robert Hope as assistant and after a successful run in the club finished in 16th place. Hopes were high for the new season but the expected results failed to materialise and Sweeney resigned at the start of December due to pressures away from the field. Malcolm Anderton was put in temporary charge and Stuart Humphries was appointed for the final two months of the season and LR did just enough to maintain their top flight status. Dave Hughes was appointed first team manager for the 2008/9 season with the remit of building the foundations of a stable future for the club after three seasons of trails and tribulations both on and off the field and the club had an excellent first term under his leadership as he guided them to a comfortable mid-table finish and they secured silverware in the shape of the Goldline Trophy beating Stoneclough in the final at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium.

Vodkat League News ECCLESHALL CLUB STALWART FACES CANCER BATTLE Everyone at Eccleshall FC is rallying round to support long serving gateman Brian Wain, who has been diagnosed with cancer. Brian was rushed into Stafford Hospital in June, apparently suffering from appendicitis, but following his admission the diagnosis was confirmed as bowel cancer. After an operation he was subsequently told that the cancer had spread to his liver and that there would be no further surgery. Brian had had some problems over the previous months but it is believed his doctor did not see the signs. Eccleshall Secretary Richard Marsh said: “Brian has been with the club for six years and recently donated a trophy to the club in his father’s name, to be presented to a worthy person who had contributed their time freely in the helping of the running of the club. “Brian was a bit of a local legend, thanks partly to an article on the league website and newsletter a couple of years ago. The article, entitled 'Everyone needs a Brian', paid tribute to his dedication in operating his gate in all weathers and dealing with all comers, including those who attempted to gain entry without paying with elaborate stories. “He always stood his ground and took no nonsense which sometimes didn't go down too well those trying to gain free entry but his efforts in helping run the club on match days have always been appreciated, whether it was a NWCFL fixture or Eccleshall reserves.

“Obviously Brian himself was devastated when he received the news, and is doing his best to put on a brave face. Over the past few weeks he has had visitors on a regular basis from people associated with the club. The club have always known how much it needed Brian and no more so than now.” Brian is being moved this week to Burton Manor Convalescent Home in Stafford, where he will spend between 6 and 8 weeks before hopefully returning home. Around The Grounds XLCR Stadium - Colne Formerly known as the Holt House Ground, the XLCR Stadium sits seemingly on the top of a mountain for us more unfi t gentl emen attempting to reach it and those attempting to cycle to it. Home to Colne FC this ground is quite a unique one amongst the NWCFL theatres. Take a moment before you make your way through the turnstiles to admire the view you get over the town of Colne, on a fine day like the travelling Town fans were treated to its quite a sight to behold. Inside, the facility has a good selection of viewing options with a covered stand behind the goal at the top of the hill, a covered seating stand down the nearside touchline and open standing surrounding the rest of the pitch. The clubhouse is a compact and cosy affair in which you often find yourself having to use the phrase “excuse me please� when trying to move from the bar back to your seat. The pitch is also one of the sloped pitches in the league but this one is far exaggerated and steeper than any other. So much so that there is a tactical advantage to playing down the hill and the long ball tactic is rife, defenders should never let it bounce when defending the bottom of the slope. Though not the best in the league, this ground does have a certain amount of charm about it and the views you can get from there are quite spectacular if the match action is boring. The fact that St Helens Town will be making two trips here this season far from disappoints me and I am sneakily looking forward to my return there at the end of October. Overall score: 6/10

Town History Formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

Town History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included Eric Moore (Everton), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Town Pen Pictures Graeme McCall; Keeper in his second spell at the club after rejoining in the close season. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keepers jersey. Kevin Woods; Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones; Commanding Centre Half who now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke; Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias; Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Paul Monteith; Now in his second season at the club, “Monty� was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Iain Dyson; Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the clubs top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell; Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell; Brother of Graeme followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer.

Town Pen Pictures Brian Hatton; The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Adam Gilchrist; Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield. Marc Stephens; Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Karl Ledsham; Former Town Young Player of the Year who has great potential. Can play on the left, centre midfield or in the “hole” behind the strikers. Causes plenty of problems with surging runs, similar to Steven Gerrard and chipped in with his fair share of goals during the last couple of season. Also matured tremendously throughout the last year or so. Rob Hanley; Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Mark Evans; Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen “Ben” Kay; Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Faragher; Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Steve Edwards; Striker who has rejoined the club after spending the majority of last term with Atherton LR. Another with an excellent record at a lower level having netted 40+ goals for Billinge a couple of seasons ago. Will be looking to secure a first team shirt this term.

Vodkat League News CONGLETON CHAIRMAN PRAISES NEW MILLS Peter Evans, Chairman at Congleton Town, has praised the attitude of the New Mills playing and coaching staff after their recent league encounter at Booth Street. The game was an excellent advert for the standard of football and gave neutrals real value for money, with New Mills grabbing a last minute equalising goal to earn a point from a 2-2 draw. But it was post match activities from the New Mills squad that made the Bears Chairman appreciative of their consideration, after they left the away dressing room clean and tidy. Peter said: “All the normal discarded matter - tape, cups, bottles etc. - were all placed in the bin and the room left clean. So when the ground staff turned up next day to prepare the rooms for the next fixture, they were given a welcome surprise.”
BARNOLDSWICK TOWN v ATHERTON COLLIERIES A NOTABLE FIXTURE On Saturday 5th September, Barnoldswick Town entertained Atherton Collieries in a Division One clash at the Silentnight Stadium. Although it was the first time the sides have met in a competitive game in our league, the fixture itself has some history attached to it, as Barnoldswick Town Programme Editor Peter Naylor discovered recently. While browsing through the book ‘The Lancashire Football Association, A Celebration of 125 Years’, Peter discovered that the two clubs met in the final of the Lancashire Shield back in the 1922/23 season. The book reports: “Atherton Collieries’ second triumph in the Shield came with a 4-1 victory over Barnoldswick Town at Burnden Park. Previous gate receipts for the Amateur Challenge Shield were smashed, the coffers were boosted to the tune of £205 9s 6d but nearly 25% had to be paid in tax.” Returning to more current events, the game was notable as being the first league game in charge for new Colls boss Steve Pilling, who took over the managerial reins at Alder House from Dave Conlon at the end of August. Steve, a former assistant manager at both Ashton Town and Ashton Athletic, has appointed Atherton LR reserve team boss Chris Richardson as his assistant and is looking forward to his new role. In a statement on the Colls website Steve said: “Chris and myself are relishing the challenge. Rome wasn’t built in a day but with patience we feel we will achieve great things in the future at Atherton Collieries.”

Fan’s Eye View Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road for this evenings Vodkat, North West Counties League Premier Division match against Atherton LR. May the travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result! The results since we were all last gathered here have been mixed as Town have played in both FA competitions with varying degrees of success. However I think it’s worth reflecting on the last match played on this turf a fortnight ago when Town suffered their first league defeat of the campaign against Newcastle Town. I seem to be only one of a few people that actually took some positives out of the encounter, thinking that Town actually played some nice football at times during the contest and were far from overrun by their big spending promotion pushing opponents. The goals that were conceded were preventable and that will be what sticks in the craw the most as had these not gone in, Town might have been able to get something from the match. It’s not usually like me to look at the positives from a defeat like that (or in any other situation in life come to think about it) but this season seems to be different. Yes Town had lost the match but ultimately they were expected to and if that game would have taken place last season, I’m pretty sure that Town would have taken a very heavy beating and been annihilated in the processes. This time though they competed with the big teams, something that showed 4 days later when Town made the trip over the border into Wales for another FA Cup away day. Colwyn Bay sent some representatives down to the match against Newcastle Town to scout our playing style and must have left the ground feeling pretty confident of their chances come the match day. Whether Colwyn Bay had a bad day at the office or not, Town stepped their play up a gear and right from the start they took the match to their opponents. Four excellently taken goals (and the prize money of course) were just rewards for Town’s performance as they completely outclassed their higher league opponents and progressed to the next round of the FA Cup, even though they put their supporters through another emotional rollercoaster ride towards the end of the match. A trip to Cammell Laird on Saturday will be the next match in that particular competition. That remains the only FA Competition that Town still remain in after last Saturday ended the FA Vase campaign at the first hurdle for the fourth year in succession. A disappointing first half against Padiham and conceding right on the stroke of half time to go into the break 1-3 down, simply gave Town too much to do to recover the match in the 2nd half and despite a brilliant and exciting fight back, they just fell short and bowed out of the competition 3-4 to their Lancashire rivals. Town must now put that disappointment behind them tonight as they return to league action for the first time in a fortnight against an Atherton LR side also reeling from an early FA Vase exit at the weekend. Colne were their conquerors and the start to the league campaign for our visitors tonight has seen them acquire five points from their opening five games, but as we all know it’s not how you start a season but how you finish it. The supporters of Atherton LR will have enjoyed recent matches against St Helens Town as the results have been in their favour. Last season saw them thump 10 goals past Town in a 04 away defeat and a 3-6 home defeat which saw absolutely nothing go right for Town. So one feels that perhaps St Helens Town will be keen to get a good result against our good friends and local rivals this evening. The support from you the supporters continues to be excellent and has no doubt been a contributing factor to the recent good results. Let’s get behind the players again tonight and demonstrate the kind of support that has brought about the brilliant results of late, and hopefully cheer them on to another victory this evening. Town News A CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY For a brief moment recently St Helens Town officials thought they might need to rewrite the club's official history - until a case of mistaken identity was revealed. The story began when the club received an e-mail from Oxfordshire based Peter Long, who had purchased a framed and glazed sampler (a framed tapestry image created using different types of stitches) at an auction. On removing his purchase from the frame, Peter discovered it was backed by a pristine black and white photograph of 'St. Helens United FC', showing a team and club officials from the early part of the twentieth century. Peter's email to Club Secretary Jeff Voller described the photograph in detail, naming players, backroom staff and committee, outlining the player's kit and the medals/ plaque being held by the team captain. Following a brief email conversation, the photograph duly arrived in the post and Town Chairman John McKiernan set about investigating any connection with the club. After some discussions and a few hours on the internet it became obvious that the photograph was not a predecessor of the current St. Helens Town Football Club. The recent work being undertaken by Glyn Jones on the history of the original club (1901-1923) had Town officials thinking another club may have been formed around the same time, but it was not to be. John McKiernan said, 'I managed to track the photograph to the 1919 season, and the team is in fact West Auckland Town FC of the Northern League who for a solitary season changed their name to 'St. Helens United FC' the team having been based around an area of County Durham called St. Helen Auckland.' The club is famous for its 'World Cup' exploits which saw 'West' win the Sir Thomas Lipton trophy outright after a second trip to Italy in 1911 although this also caused them extreme financial problems and resulted in the club being disbanded in 1912 and the 'World Cup' being sold to pay off debts. John McKiernan added, 'There appears to be at least one remaining connection between the 'World Cup' winning side of 1911 and the 1919 St. Helens United FC photograph - both teams contained player J Rewcastle.' Town have since been in touch with West Auckland Town FC and have arranged for the photograph to make its way back to them. West Auckland's Commercial Manager Michael Bainbridge was delighted to hear the news and said, 'I haven't seen many images from around this time so it will be an excellent addition to our collection. Many thanks for undertaking the research and getting in touch.'

Match Report Saturday 5th September 2009; FA Vase, 1st Qualifying Round Padiham 4-3 St Helens Town There was a sense of déjà vu for St Helens Town as they exited the FA Vase at the first hurdle for the 4th season in a row. The omens were not good as Town gifted Padiham a goal start on 2 minutes when a loose ball across the back line from Mark Evans was picked up by Lee Morris and he found himself 1on1 with Graeme McCall and slotted home. Matters were made worse for Town on 8 minutes when a free kick from the edge of the box was curled around the wall and into the bottom right hand corner of the net by Brian Walsh to put the hosts two goals to the good. The quick-fire start was concluded on 15 minutes when with Karl Ledsham in attendance keeper Sean Davis struck his attempted clearance off his own man and the ball rebounded into the net to halve the deficit for Town. The visitors then enjoyed a purple patch, Phil Mitchell beat the keeper but not the woodwork with a free kick that struck the angle of the post and crossbar, struck the keeper on the back went behind for a corner. Iain Dyson was next to spurn a chance as he saw his header from a Phil Mitchell cross held by Davis. The final chance of the half for the visitors came on 35 minutes when Rob Hanley and Dyson linked on the edge of the box the latter rounded the keeper and was caught by the stopper as he looked to slot the loose ball into the unguarded net but no penalty was awarded and Craig Williamson cleared the loose ball. Padiham rocked Town before the interval, first they saw a goalbound effort from Michael Morrison was headed off the line by Dougie Pitts. In added on time Stuart Telfer got down the right too easily and centred for Michael Morrison to tap home on the far post. Town looked to get quickly back into the match at the start of the second period, early chances fell to Phil Mitchell as first he was thwarted by Davis and then after a good run he shot wide of the left hand upright. The visitors thought they were denied a stonewall penalty on 52 minutes when Ledsham and Hanley linked before the latter sent a cross to the far post where Dyson headed towards goal only for his effort to be deflected by an outstretched arm but Mr Anderson again deemed there to be no case to answer. The Mitchell’s were involved in the next two openings as first Graeme collected a through ball and saw his shot touched around the post before Phil saw a shot deflected before the breakthrough came as Phil beat his defender and got brought down in the box for a penalty, skipper Dyson stepped up and powered the ball centrally past the keeper to pull a goal back. The comeback was derailed some six minutes later as a left wing corner was sent into the box and Williamson turned the ball home on the far post to restore the two goal lead. Town had to chase the game and pressed forward in numbers, Phil Mitchell sent a left wing cross into the box which Hanley reacted quickly to and prodded the ball just wide of the upright. The game was back on after 77 minutes when Ledsham played a great ball to Phil Mitchell on the right edge of the box and his effort was spilled by the keeper allowing Michael Scully to poke the ball home. The game was getting stretched and Padiham almost netted again Nehru McKenzie linked with Morris with the striker only being denied by an excellent 1on1 save from McCall. Further Town pressure amounted to nothing as Phil Mitchell’s shot was well held and Hanley’s cross/shot went over the bar. Town almost took the game to extra time when in the third added minute a corner was half cleared and broke to Scully who sent a curling effort goalwards which beat the keeper and rebounded off the crossbar. So the hosts held on and advanced to the next round with Town again thwarted at the first stage in a tournament that they have a great affinity with having triumphed at Wembley in 1987. In Other News...... Cammell Laird Look To Ring The Changes Following a stuttering start to the season, Cammell Lairds are already set to make some changes to their squad. Having conceded eleven goals in their first four league games and struggled to get started, the Birkenhead based club are already starting to take action after conceding a late equaliser in Saturday’s game against Grantham Town. Speaking this week, Assistant Manager Ian Cooke was brutally honest when he was speaking about the clubs difficulty in getting out of the starting blocks. “With the squad that we have we should have hit the ground running and we should be challenging or at least there or thereabouts with the pace setters and the early poor form won’t be allowed to continue. There will certainly be changes not just for our Unibond Presidents Cup game this week but to the squad in general, I’m hoping that there will be one or two new faces on the park on Tuesday we have already this week brought Josh Thompson back to the club. Josh was with us at the back end of last season on loan from Crewe and gave us some extra pace and width, doing well for us. Josh has come in from Rugby whom he joined when he was released at the end of the end of the season, initially on loan and we have a few other irons in the fire at present as well.” “Richie Foulkes made a welcome return to action later on in the Grantham game and he will be making a strong claim for a return to the starting line ups once fully match fit and we also have a few irons in the fire with Tranmere Rovers, Crewe and Southport to perhaps bring in a few players on loan to bring in fresh impetus to the squad. All Our Yesterdays St. Helens Town AFC – FA Cup Qualifiers Having successfully cleared the challenges of Parkgate and Colwyn Bay in the Extra-Preliminary and Preliminary Rounds of the FA Cup, Saturday sees the short journey under the Mersey to take on Cammell Laird in the First Qualifying Round at Kirklands. Town have never previously met Lairds in the FA Cup, but have featured regularly in the First Qualifying Round since the club was re-formed in 1946. Their first attempt at this stage in 1948/49 produced a 1-0 win at Formby, but Bangor City (a frequent stumbling block over the next few years) won 30 at Hoghton Road in the Second Qualifying Round. The following year, in Bert Trautmann’s final match for Town, Bangor City again won 3-0 at Hoghton Road, in the First Qualifying Round. In 1952/53, a trip to Bangor resulted in a 2-0 defeat and the following year the clubs met again in the Preliminary Round at City Road: the game ended 2-2, but Town lost the replay 5-1. The next occasion Town reached the First Qualifying Round was in 1957/58, when they lost 3-5 at home to Llandudno and the same team put Town out the following season at the Council Field, this time by 3-0. Between 1961/62 and 1970/71, Town had the good fortune to avoid the Preliminary Round altogether, but only three times did they progress to the Second Qualifying Round, where they lost at Altrincham (4-1 in 1964/65) and at home twice to Skelmersdale United, 0-3 in 1965/66 and 0-1 in 1968/69. Prescot Cables (twice), Ashton United (twice), Earlestown, Rhyl, Chorley, Droylsden and Rossendale United were our conquerors in between. Skelmersdale again, Rhyl once more, New Brighton, Oswestry (after two replays) and Macclesfield accounted for Town at the First Qualifying stage in the remaining years of the 1970s. The 1980s was undoubtedly the best decade for Town in the FA Cup. In 1980/81, wins at Southport (3-1) and Leyland Motors (4-0) set up a Third Qualifying Round clash against Fleetwood Town at Hoghton Road, when Town went out 0-1. Although a 4-0 defeat at home to Bootle in 1982/83 was a disappointing result, two years later a 2-0 win over Congleton led to a Second Qualifying Round game at Formby, where another 1-0 defeat was the order of the day. 1985/86 saw Town get within touching distance of the First Round Proper when wins at Colwyn Bay (an omen this time around?) by 3-0, at home to Eastwood Hanley (2-0) and at Leek Town (1-0) took Town to the Fourth Qualifying Round for the first and only time in their history. All Our Yesterdays awaited the winners in the First Round but, sadly, Town slipped to a 1-0 home defeat in the replay. The Second Qualifying Round was reached again the following year (Town’s FA Vase winning season) when, having thumped Heanor Town 6-0, Armthorpe Welfare were the winners in another Hoghton Road replay. 1987/88 saw another memorable campaign as Town reached the Third Qualifying Round, going out 2-3 at Northwich Victoria, having seen off Ilkeston after two replays and Horwich RMI after another drawn game. The last two decades have seen only modest progress by Town in the premier knock-out competition. On only 4 occasions since 1987 have St. Helens reached the Second Qualifying Round and every time the club has been beaten. In 1993/94, there was a 2-1 defeat at Knowsley United, Ryhope CA won 2-1 in 1997/98, Droylsden Proud 6-0 in 1998/99 and, most recently, in 2005/06, having supporters of defeated Crook Town 3-0 in the St. Helens Preliminary Round and Town Northallerton Town 3-2 away Football Club after a 3-3 home draw, Alfreton Town were 2-0 winners at Knowsley Road. Saints Alive . . . A woman finds her prize parrot laying motionless in its cage, and rushes it to the vet. After careful examination of the bird, the vet tells the woman that her beloved pet is dead. “That’s impossible, he’s less than three years old,” she cries. “I want a second opinion.” The vet agrees to her request and goes to speak to his assistant, who then goes out and returns a few minutes later with a labrador. The dog looks into the cage, sniffs at the parrot, rolls it around with his paw, then turns round and walks out. “That confirms it,” says the vet. “Your parrot is definitely dead.” The woman is distraught, but still won’t accept the verdict and demands yet another opinion. Getting a little annoyed, the vet again speaks to his assistant, who goes out and this time comes back with a large tomcat. It goes through exactly the same procedure as the dog, then turns round and walks out. “There you are,” says the vet. “You can’t need any more proof. That will be £2000.” “Two grand just to tell me my pet is dead?” shouts the woman in disbelief. “How come?” “Well,” replies the vet. “First there’s my fee, then the lab report, and finally the cat scan.” Did you hear about the family evicted from their tree house? The bank said they didn’t pay their mortgage; the family blamed a mix-up because they recently switched branches. Two blokes meet up in a pub and, not having seen one another for some time, start catching up. “Are you still playing golf?” asks the first man. “Yes,” replies the other. “But I seem to be getting worse – it’s costing me an absolute fortune in lost golf balls.” “Then you could do with this,” says his friend, and he pulls an object from his pocket, and shows it to him. “It’s a golf ball,” observes the golfer. “Ah, yes,” says the other. “But this is no ordinary golf ball - this golf ball you cannot lose.” The golfer gives him a sceptical look. “You’re pulling my plonker,” he says, accusingly. “I’m telling you straight, you cannot lose this. Look, if you drive off into the heavy rough or into trees, this ball starts bleeping. You just follow the sound and there it is. You just cannot lose it. If you land in water, it floats to the surface and drifts to the nearest bank so you can pick it up or play it. You cannot lose it. You can even play during winter. If it lands on snow, it turns bright orange. If it lands in deep snow, it turns orange and bleeps.
