Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League contest against our friends from AFC Blackpool I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. It’s been a fortnight since we last ventured out onto the pitch here at Edge Green Street when we took on Glossop North End. We had been on a run where goals were hard to come by but we had also be defending quite well and had not been conceding many goals. This was to change as after a bright start by Town we well behind to two goals in the opening 10 minutes of the contest both efforts on the counter attack. This gave us a mountain to climb be re recovered well and after Andy Ledger was felled in the area Carl Addison netted from the spot as the host looked to level. The break came at the wrong time for us and Glossop netted a third just after the restart before adding two more to put them 5-1 up with Ian Roby netting a late consolation. Last Saturday we took the long trip to Barnoldswick Town and came away on the wrong end of a 4-0 score line. Dale Newbrook returned in the visitors goal for the first time since the Liverpool Senior Cup contest against Ashton Town and his excellent performance helped to keep the score line down as had made some impressive saves. Another bright spot was the first start of Dylan Corrie at right back in for the injured Mike Kavanagh. Iain Dyson also returned to action after a spell out and new signing Artjoms Butorins also looked lively when he entered the fray. • Restaurant

Onto this afternoon’s contest as we welcome Premier Division new boys AFC Blackpool to Edge Green Street. The team formerly know as Blackpool Mechanics dumped Town out of the League Cup last term securing a 5-1 victory on a rainy night by the seaside and Town will be looking to gain a modicum of revenge and get back to winning ways this afternoon. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto a much needed victory. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . AFC Blackpool was formed in 1947 under the name of Blackpool Metal Mechanics and played at Stanley Park for two years before moving to the current Jepson Way ground. They played in local leagues before taking the step up to join the West Lancashire League. During this period in local league football they won many awards, taking the Division Two title of the Fylde District League in 1950/51 and in Division One were champions twice and runners-up three times in five consecutive years between 1953/54 and 1957/58. Numerous local cup competitions were also won, including the Lancashire Junior Shield in 1957/58, a competition they were to win again in 1960/61. As the 50's drew to a close, Blackpool Mechanics decided to take the next step up and join the West Lancashire League. They were an almost immediate success, being runners-up in 1959/60 and champions for the next two seasons. Various cups and trophies from local competitions still regularly found their way to Jepson Way. The club then took another step up the football ladder by joining the Lancashire Combination. The jump in standard meant the cups and honours that had poured into the trophy room dried up and it was not until the turn of the decade before many more honours were to come their way.
AFC Blackpool in action against Colne (above) and Winsford United (below) courtesy of the AFC Blackpool website
In 1972/73 they won the Lancashire Combination Bridge Shield and in 1974/75 they finished runners-up in the league, just one point behind champions Darwen. They remained a strong team throughout the 70's although towards the end they suffered some poor results. With the advent of the North West Counties League, Blackpool Mechanics were placed in Division Three and in 1985/86 were promoted to Division Two. At the end on 1991/92 they were promoted to Division One, but it was not a happy experience and the club returned to Division Two. After a few seasons of struggle, the club is now financially stable and looking forward to developing the club's potential both on and off the pitch. In the summer of 2005 Blackpool Mechanics FC merged with Lytham St. Anne’s FC who had just won the NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

. . . AFC Blackpool West Lancashire League Division One title. Lytham St. Annes resigned from their own league and have brought their resources and manpower to Jepson Way in a bid to launch the new look Mechanics in their push up the non-league football pyramid. The club was re-named AFC Blackpool in May 2008 when Blackpool Mechanics FC and Squires Gate Junior FC got together to form one club. It was decided to mark the start of a new era by re-naming the club and the name 'AFC Blackpool' was chosen. The club leased a further piece of land adjacent to the ground in Jepson Way to accommodate the enlarged club and investment to improve the facilities was begun. The club ground in Jepson Way retains its name 'The Mechanics' to maintain a link with the past. Season 2010/11 saw the club have probably its best season ever. The first team were promoted to the Premier Division as Div.1 champions with a record breaking 28 wins and three draws in 34 league matches. They also reached the semi finals in both the 1st Division Trophy and the League Cup. There were notable successes in the Junior section too with the under 16s doing the league and cup double, the under 10's and 11's winning their respective Divisions and the under 14s also winning promotion. With the club now providing football from under 6 through to open age the future is looking secure.

A word from the Dugout . . . Hello and welcome to this afternoon’s North West Counties Premier Division game against AFC Blackpool. Let’s hope everyone connected to their club has had a safe journey getting here and they enjoy the hospitality on offer during their stay this afternoon. We have been on something of a bad run of late and appear to be catching teams who are playing at the top of their game, something that was all too apparent last Saturday at Barnoldswick Town who on the display they put on against us on Saturday must be amongst the favourites to be crowned champions come the end of the season. Again on Saturday we got punished for almost every mistake we made and only for a great goalkeeping display from Dale Newbrook we could have conceded a couple more goals. We have trained well this week and are hopeful of having a couple of players back from injury. What we need to do is compete from the first whistle to the last for every ball and get back to doing the basics in both defence and attack. I am convinced our luck will change soon, but only if we put in the work rate and commitment to the cause that the club deserves. We have a great set of lads here but the results don’t lie, we need to stick together and fight each Warrington Granite & Marble are the Northwest’s other’s corner, back each other up and encourage leading specialists in Granite Worktops, Quartz one another. A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division against our friends and rivals from the Fylde coast, AFC Blackpool. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have enjoyed a good journey and are treated to an entertaining encounter. Our poor form continued last Saturday as we went down 4-0 at Barnoldswick Town in a game which saw the home side always in command. In reality, the only surprise was the margin of the defeat - being only 1-0 down at half time was down to a combination of poor finishing and some fine saves from the returning Dale Newbrook (picture right), who despite the score line was Town’s man of the match. It goes without saying that over the previous two weekends we’ve played two in-form teams in Glossop North End and Barnoldswick Town and both seem likely to be in contention come the end of the season. However, ten defeats in our last 12 league games proves we are in real trouble at present and Jimmy and the lads must work hard to get something from every game in the coming weeks and months or our 29 season run in the NWCFL top flight will be in serious danger. Our bright start to the season shows we can compete and we must ask ourselves which was the more surprising - top of the league after four games or struggling at the wrong end of the table in October? The reality is that as a club we only expect to be competitive (most of the time) and for the foreseeable future our aim continues to be ‘survival’ with the hope of a decent ‘cup run’ rather than the glory of a Championship chase. The hard fact is that we are now in a relegation scrap and we cannot continue to count on the poor performances of those teams below us to keep us out of trouble. Today’s game will be another tough encounter as AFC Blackpool have made a good start to life back in the Premier Division and we know how good a side they can be having suffered a humbling 5-1 defeat in the League Challenge Cup late last season - a game which on reflection started the rot as we entered the final few dismal weeks of last season. Let’s hope today sees Town get back on track and earn three vital points. On the player front we’ve lost the services of captain Shaun McKeegan who has recently changed jobs which has a shift pattern incompatible with football. Congratulations to our September ‘Player of the Month’ Michael Burns who will get to choose a brand new Toyota Car for a week courtesy of our main sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool. In our last programme I mentioned the Liverpool Senior Cup draw and that Everton will be our visitors in the quarter finals - at the time of writing we are awaiting confirmation of date which will hopefully be Tuesday 15th November, kick off 7.45pm Finally, give the lads your vocal encouragement and please join us in the clubhouse for the usual post-match debate and St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ presentations. Next Saturday we travel to Silsden for the League Challenge Cup 2nd Round tie (we have lost home advantage as our landlords Ashton Town were also drawn at home to Runcorn Linnets).

Match Report v Glossop NE . . . Saturday 8th October 2011 NWCFL, Premier Division St Helens Town 2-5 Glossop North End Town were heavily defeat by Glosop North End at Edge Green Street this afternoon in a match where ironically they played well in spells and looked more threatening going forward than they had done in recent contests. The first ten minutes of the match saw the hosts dominate possession but give themselves a mountain to climb as they lost two goals on the counter. The first goal came on 8 minutes when Town’s Ian Roby sent a cross into the box from the right and Daniel Yates just managed to flick the ball away from Andy Olsen the loose ball was collected by Adam Oakes on the left who advanced into the box and found Darren Hamilton in plenty of space and he made no mistake firing home. Two minutes later another Town attack culminated in a second Glossop goal, Roby was disposed deep in the Glossop half and Alex Elliott took advantage down the Glossop left before cutting inside and firing home. Town were rocked and it took a good save from Nick Jackson to keep out Hamilton’s over head kick to keep the hosts from going further behind. It took Town until the latter stages of the opening period to get back into the game. The ball was worked into the box by Dave Berry and met by Andy Flood but his headed effort was deflected behind by a Glossop defender and the resultant corner came to nothing. Moments later Andy Ledger collected a through ball and burst into the box only to be brought down by Ashley Frith and Carl Addison fired the spot kick home to halve the deficit. A quick throw-in by Mike Kavanagh on the right after 40 minutes towards Addison was dummied and released Ledger who fired an effort goalwards from the edge of the area which beat the visiting stopper but went just the wrong side of the right hand upright. With the half drawing to a close Olsen latched onto a through ball and got into the area he was to be denied by a well timed challenge by Yates. The half time interval came at the wrong time for Town who were on the front foot and their challenge became a tougher one shortly after the restart when Sam Hind was found with a cross from the right in acres of space and he found the inside of the far post. Another Glossop goal on 54 minutes put the result beyond doubt when a right wing free kick by Steve Heaton found Jason Gorton unmarked on the far post and he headed home. Just after the hour mark a Glossop corner from the right culminated in a fifth goal when Hind rose highest to head the ball goalwards and after a bit of pinball in the area Gorton poked the ball home. Town netted a consolation goal on 67 minutes when a right wing corner was not fully cleared and it was collected by Roby on the edge of the box who fired the ball towards goal and found the left hand corner of the net past the despairing dive of the stopper for the best goal of the contest but this was to be of little consolation in the hosts as they fell to another league defeat. NWCF League News . . . Ashton Town have recently benefited from an offer from one of tenants St Helens Town’s sponsors SSE St Helens. SSE are a street lighting company based in the North West and operating from a depot in Haydock, who currently have fourteen people employed from their depot. Three years ago SSE supplied a winning tender to St. Helens MBC and was awarded with a 10-year maintenance contract to repair and renew all street lighting across the St. Helens borough. Within contract the company work on various schemes, which also includes all traffic directional and informational signs and bollards. SSE’s ‘Community at Heart’ project is a countrywide scheme and is offered to all depots and every employee, who then have the opportunity to take part in various capacities. The idea is all operatives give one day of their time free of charge to others who might need support out in the local community. The team from Haydock have previously helped out in local hospitals, schools and charity shops and recently donated £2,500 to the Honey Rose Foundation in St. Helens. The ‘Community at Heart’ concept stems from Ian Marchant, the Managing Director of SSE, UK operation. His philosophy and service values include treating all operatives and all customers as family. The company’s Health & Safety policy is their number one priority, second to none in the industry and it is used widely as a selling point. Ian’s theory, in practice, is that you would offer your skills and time to all members of your family free of charge without hesitation, so why not spread that a little further and help out. The work undertaken at Ashton came via Keith Plumpton, an employee of SSE and part of St Helens Town’s backroom staff. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, “Keith contacted me a few weeks ago and explained the offer from SSE who had already supported the club with some programme sponsorship. I in turn spoke with Ashton Town’s General Manager Darryl Picton, and the upshot was a couple of days of work at Edge Green Street from the Haydock SSE lads. “It was mostly painting, including the pitch perimeter fence, turnstiles and entrance gate to the ground, as well as the small stand on the far side of the ground". Keith Plumpton added, “The weather did shine on us the days we were outside, so we managed to complete what we set out to do. We also installed four new double strip lights inside the clubhouse, donated by SSE, which was part of the check of all the electrics on the ground. "We had planned to build the disabled ramp at the entrance to the clubhouse, but this will have to be left for another visit due to a delay with the concrete delivery. It was very enjoyable, and I think our lads had a great time, helping out and having a change from their daily routines. Hopefully both Towns have benefitted from our efforts.” The SSE team are pictured above during a break when working at Ashton Town. NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

Photos & Match Report . . . Saturday 15th October 2011 NWCFL, Premier Division Barnoldswick Town 4-0 St Helens Town St Helens Town slipped to another heavy defeat this time at the home of high flying Barnoldswick Town as the long wait for a league win extended. The visitors were on the back foot from the early stages of the contest as the hosts took the game to their guests. St Helens had returning stopper Dale Newbrook to thank for not going behind in the early stages when a deflection broke kindly to Paul Fildes and he found himself 1on1 with Newbrook who saved well at his feet. Newbrook again had to be alert this time to keep out Stewart Airdrie’s effort from the left which he parried and Andy Flood cleared the loose ball. At the other end a rare venture forward saw Carl Addison find Andy Ledger on the edge of the box and his effort was held by the home stopper. Further pressure from the hosts saw Fildes turn and shoot with his effort striking the left hand upright with the Town stopper beaten. The hosts almost broke the deadlock when a tackle from Dylan Corrie broke kindly to Spencer Jordan centrally and it took an excellent save at full stretch from Newbrook to keep the scores level. The pressure eventually told as the deadlock was broken on 38 minutes when a surging run from Fildes saw the striker get to the edge of the area where he played the ball to Lewis Jordan and he found the left hand corner of the net from the right of the area to send the hosts into the interval with a deserved lead. The visitors should have levelled less than a minute after the restart

. . . St Helens Town v Barnoldswick when Ian Frazer sent a dangerous free kick into the area which skipper Michael Burns headed back into the danger area towards Daniel Clarke who looked to have the simple task of heading home but he somehow managed to head across goal and wide of the left hand post. St Helens were made to pay for this miss when almost instantly Barnoldswick went up the other end and doubled their lead. An attack down the hosts’ right wing saw the ball sent into the area and it took a deflection which broke towards Spencer Jordan who managed to fire the ball home. The visitors responded with their best spell of the contest, Addison did well on the right and send a dangerous cross into the area which just evaded the attackers in the area and was collected by Che Morgan and his effort was held by Carrington in the home goal. Moments later Ledger chased a lost cause and sent a cross into the box from the left which Clarke met with his head but Carrington held the effort. At the other end Fildes received the ball on the edge of the area and he turned before shooting wide of the target. Fildes then had an effort from the right which beat Newbrook but not the crossbar as it cannoned off the frame of the goal and was cleared away to safety. A free kick from the right hand edge of the area was taken by Robbie Smith and it took another fine save from the visiting stopper to keep the effort out as Newbrook pushed the shot onto the bar and the rebound was cleared. St Helens Town had a brace of chances to get back into the contest, the first came when Burns rose highest to meet a cross from the left and the effort struck Bill Williams outstretched hand but no penalty was awarded, the rebound broke to Clarke on the edge of the area but his effort went over the bar. The second effort saw Ledger beat Williams centrally and link with Artjoms Butorins who touched the ball back towards Addison on the edge of the box but his effort sailed over the bar. Similarly to Barnoldswick’s second goal the host quickly made St Helens pay for missing this chance as they quickly netted a third. What looked like a blatant foul in the build up to the goal was overlooked and a quick counter saw Fildes send the ball towards Liam Garbutt on the far post and he applied the finish. This was quickly added to when from the restart St Helens were caught in possession and Fildes fired home to put the game well beyond the visitors. In the closing stages Newbrook again was on hand to spare the blushes of the visitors as he denied Spencer Jordan in a one on one, before St Helens were denied a stonewall penalty in added on time as Iain Dyson was felled by Carrington but no penalty was awarded and St Helens were denied a consolation. At the time Johnny was the St Helens Schoolboy ‘keeper and it seems on the day in question he played for the schools team before filling the breach at Cromptons. Incidentally, the youngster coped very well in a 2-1 Town victory. Club Secretary Jeff Voller also did some digging into the club archives and the game took place on 31st March 1962 and Underwood scored both Town goals. Although unconfirmed it seems Johnny may have made a couple of other appearances for Town during the 1965-66 season v Nelson (08/09/65) and v Skelmersdale United (20/09/65). The club sends it condolences to John’s family.

John Bold - The St Helens Reporter newspaper last week reported the death of John Bold, aged 65 years. Club Vice President Jim Barrett recalled John’s brief stint at Town back during the 1961-62 season when as a 15 year lad he was to solve a late goal keeping crisis and in doing so it appears he became the youngest player to play for Town. ‘Johnny’ Bold kept goal at Crompton Recs in a Lancashire Combination Division 2 game.

Glyn Jones’ Programme Review 6 . . . Blast from the past PRESTWICH HEYS v ST. HELENS TOWN – Lancs Comb Challenge Cup Final, 1st leg – Monday, 10th May 1971 Town met Prestwich Heys in their first appearance in the Final of the Lancashire Combination Cup at the end of the 1970/71 season, a tie played over two legs but, just as they did against Accrington Stanley three years later, they proved to be losing finalists. This game was played at the old Grimshaws ground, off Heys Road in Prestwich, not the same ground as Town played at in their pre-season friendly on 30th July this year, Heys produced a 4-page foldover programme, the covers to which were pre-printed in red and white with club details and adverts and further adverts appeared on the top of the inside pages. The editorial content and team lines were typewritten and printed off on a duplicating machine, very common in those days. The covers must have been printed some considerable time earlier, as the price was stated to be 3d, but the UK had “gone decimal” on 15th February that year. Town were represented by Weekes, Rawsthorne, Hegarty, Wellens, Atherton, Pugh, Marr, Diggle, Ledsham, Lesbell and Tuft with Peake named as substitute. The programme noted that Town had won only 8 games from 30 played in the Combination that season but, of course, Town did go on to finish as League Champions the following campaign. On a level playing field SQUIRES GATE v ST. HELENS TOWN – NWCL Premier Division, Tuesday, 13th September 2011 A well-presented programme with colourful covers and plenty of photographs in its 16 pages, the £2 price tag was on first sight rather high, but closer examination revealed that by tearing off the corner of the back page, the purchaser could have a free hot dog and a free hot drink. There were plenty of statistics in the programme and although some of the items on the visitors and league matters had been downloaded from the websites, they were supplemented in Town’s case with a photograph of former St. Helens legend Bert Trautmann. All-in-all a good read, presented in an attractive manner. The facilities at the School Road ground are very good. It was a great shame that the game itself was played in a howling gale, keeping the crowd down to a disappointing 68. They’re in a different league ASHTON TOWN v ST. HELENS TOWN – Liverpool Senior Cup, First Round, Tuesday, 20th September 2011 On paper at least, this was home from home for St. Helens – landlord v tenant at Edge Green Street. Ashton produced a superb programme to mark the occasion, reasonably priced at just £1.20, running to 32 pages, including the full colour cover. There were lengthy articles from the home team’s manager and chairman, articles on the club history, including features on former players of the original club formed in 1903, who went on to play for Liverpool and Manchester United. There was even a guest address from visiting chairman John McKiernan. I particularly enjoyed the two-page interview with John’s opposite number, Mark Hayes, in which Mark reveals how he came to persuade the stars of Hollyoaks to turn out in a charity game which drew a crowd of 1200 to Edge Green Street and how he almost managed to persuade Martin Kelly, now a regular at Anfield, to turn out for a trial at Ashton Town. There were further updates on the reserve and youth teams, an article by player Neil Unsworth and a couple of photo-quizzes and some weird and wonderful football facts. The only negatives which sprang to mind was a lack of a fixture list with results to date and the printing of the teams on the glossy rear cover, which rendered alterations in ball-point pen very difficult to read. However, overall this was an excellent effort which put most NWC Premier Division clubs, as well as many more highly-placed clubs to shame.
