Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from AFC Liverpool. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It has been almost two weeks since our last outing when we visited Runcorn Town last Monday evening and in spite of a decent performance against one of the “big hitters as we had more possession and indeed created the better chances in the first half but again some slack defending cost us a goal the hosts got too easily down the right wing and the resultant cross into the box saw McShane send a free header home. The visitors bounced back from this to again carve out some good chances with Andy Gillespie probably having the best opening but we were again made to pay for our inability to find the net when on top in a contest and a late own goal by Andy Mawdsley who steered a weak shot past his own goalkeeper as he was trying to avoid it getting to a well placed striker behind him to give a rather flattering sheen to the score line for the hosts who still have to visit us here at Brocstedes Park a game which late last week have been scheduled for Thursday 3rd April. The Saturday prior to the visit to Runcorn Town we had hosted Bootle here at Brocstedes Park and at the final whistle the difference between the two sides was two outstanding finishes from the hosts. The first half was a non-event as the strong wind put paid to most of the two teams attacking endeavour. The contest came to life in the second half when Olsen spotted Moran in the Bootle goal off his line with just under and hour played and the visiting stopper just managed to get back and push his effort off target. Moments later at the other end Bootle took the lead from a set piece as a Peterson sent an overhead kick home from a right wing corner. Bootle doubled their lead when McDowell found the top right hand corner of the net from the left hand edge of the box and late on Storey was felled in the box and Judge converted the spot kick to reduce the arrears but despite a late save from Moran denying Gillespie, Bootle held on to take the spoils. We were then thwarted on Tuesday evening when we tried to host AFC Blackpool for a second time this term but the persistent rain put paid to the contest and we await a new date for the game. We welcome an AFC Liverpool side this afternoon who are having their best ever season as they have been comfortably in the upper echelons of the top half of the table for the whole season but have been in indifferent form of late having won two and lost four of their last six outings. We need to start picking up some points as we have some difficult games against the top sides who are still in the hunt for promotion and whilst we have turned in some decent recent performances we need to start turning these into results. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto victory. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . AFC Liverpool was formed in 2008, by Liverpool FC fans, who had becoming increasingly frustrated at the cost and difficulty in obtaining tickets for the Premiership. The supposed ‘39th game’ in which Premier League fixtures would be played in different parts of the world proved to be the final straw, highlighting that top flight football is now more concerned about money than its fans. A website was created and, with the response being positive, work began to move to the next stage and create a steering group to make the club a reality. At the beginning of March 2008 AFC Liverpool was officially formed and it was made clear that the club was not in any way a response to the ownership issue at Anfield or a protest against Liverpool Football Club, more a reaction to issues at the top end of football in general. By May, AFC Liverpool had appointed its first manager in Derek Goulding. The following month the club arranged a groundshare with Prescot Cables and had been accepted into the North West Counties Football League. The club’s first game was a 1-1 draw in a friendly with St Helens Town on 16th July 2008 and they began their inaugural league season extremely well, beating Darwen 5-0 in their first competitive game and going on a run of ten wins in the first eleven games. However they failed to keep this momentum going, and the club eventually finished fourth in the league. The season did prove fruitful though as a victory in the final of the First Division Trophy over Padiham at Ashton Athletic provided the club’s first piece of silverware. 2009/10 began with three successive victories but after this the season became very indifferent. After a 5-2 home defeat to Atherton Collieries on Easter Monday, Derek Goulding left the club and ex assistant and goalkeeping coach Paul Moore was appointed caretaker Manager. Under Moore’s stewardship AFC had a strong end to the 2009/10 campaign, winning five out of their last seven league games to climb to fifth in the league and also retaining the First Division Trophy, coming from behind to beat Cheadle Town 2-1 in the final at Flixton. In doing so, AFC Liverpool became the first club not only to win the Trophy twice but also successfully defend it. 2010/11 also began in promising fashion with the Reds going on a ten game unbeaten run

. . . AFC Liverpool after an opening day loss at AFC Darwen. However despite amassing their highest ever points total promotion never looked probable due to the form of would be Champions AFC Blackpool and second placed Runcorn Town, resulting in a fourth placed finish, missing out on third by goal difference. There was disappointment too in the First Division Trophy when they reached the final for a third consecutive time only to lose to Atherton Collieries 3-2 in extra time. In the FA Vase, steady progress was made to the third round, where their dreams of Wembley were dashed by a defeat at Whitley Bay, who would go on to claim a third successive triumph. However at the League AGM in July 2011 there was a surprise when Rossendale were expelled from the league and Formby were demoted to the First Division. Holker Old Boys, who finished third on goal difference, declined an invitation to take up a place in the Premier Division, meaning that AFC Liverpool were invited to take the place and the club accepted the chance that was offered to them. The 2011/12 season started badly in terms of results but not performances for AFC Liverpool as they had to wait until November for their first League victory, which came about in the form of a 7-0 demolition of Winsford United. From that point, AFC Liverpool, who had been rooted to the foot of the table, began the steady climb out of danger, ultimately finishing in nineteenth place, sixteen points clear of the relegation places. Last season saw AFC Liverpool consolidate their position in the North West Counties Premier Division with an eleventh placed finish, accumulating sixty points in the process. As the season progressed, manager Paul Moore built a core squad of players, which played some of the most exciting, attractive football in the league and post Christmas, won fifteen and drew five of twenty eight games, including a defeat of eventual Premier Division champions Padiham on their home patch. The performances were rewarded in the final game of the season as the Reds beat recently crowned champions of the Evo-Stik NPL First Division North, Skelmersdale United, 3-0 in the Liverpool Senior Cup semi final to book an all North West Counties clash with Bootle in the final which the Reds lost 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Bootle in August 2013. The ground-share at Prescot will be coming to an end after this season with AFC Liverpool having penned an agreement to play at Marine’s College Road ground from the 2014-15 season. Season

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals AFC Liverpool. I’d like to thank today’s match sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who continue their superb support for the club this season. We also welcome Damian Cummings and his colleagues from HWCGS Care in St Helens who are today’s match ball sponsors - many thanks for your support. Last Saturday the First team were without a fixture and midweek the weather intervened when AFC Blackpool were our planned visitors but since our last home game with visitors Bootle we’ve also had an away trip to Runcorn Town. Both games resulted in narrow defeats for Town; Bootle winning 1-2 on a wind affected afternoon with Shaun Judge hitting Town’s reply from penalty spot two minutes from the end of normal time. Our trip to the Pavillions saw our hosts Runcorn Town run out 2-0 winners in another tight game which saw Town have a good share of possession and a couple of good chances but it wasn’t to be on another frustrating night. Last weekend the Reserves got themselves back into the West Cheshire League Division 3 promotion race with a 2-3 win at second place Hale Reserves goals from Adam Owens, Kyle Ross and Ryan Coughlin secured a vital win. While last Sunday the Youth team recorded a fine win at Lancaster City Youth with a 0-4 victory with goals from Leyland (2), Perry and Tabern. There’s been some changes to our final NWCFL fixtures which are now detailed in the centre pages of tonight’s programme. We are back at Brocstedes Park next Thursday (3rd April) when Runcorn Town will be our visitors. Don’t forget we are still looking for new members of our weekly Goldline Lottery draw which costs just £1 per entry each week with a chance to win £500 each weekday! See any committee member for further details or an application form. Enjoy the game. John McKiernan Chairman, St Helens Town AFC

NWCFL News . . . Rochdale Town Chairman/manager Mark Canning is gearing up for a punishing schedule of games in the space of the next few weeks. With 12 league games and two legs of the League Challenge Cup semifinal to fit in between now and Saturday 26th April, 11 of those games being at home, it's going to be a busy month for Mark and everyone at the club, and he is already laying plans to cope with the heavy programme. "It's very frustrating for us to be in this position, because a backlog of games like this isn't something we have ever had before", he said. "Other clubs have had problems in the past, through lots of postponements or success in cup competitions, but it is a new experience for us. It seems that every time the bad weather has struck, it has coincided with us being at home. "As everyone knows, we don't have overall control over the condition of the pitch at the Mayfield Sports Centre, although we do spend a lot of time on match days, getting down as early as we can to work on the pitch and make sure it is playable. "Hopefully the weather will be kind to us in the next few weeks and we will be able to get all the games in". In the meantime Mark is bolstering the ranks to ensure he has enough personnel to cope with the busy schedule. "I've signed quite a few players in the last week or two, and will definitely bring in more before the deadline on the 31st March", he said. "There's no way I can expect players to play three or four games a week consistently for a month, so I will have to rotate the squad a bit. Playing Saturday/Tuesday/Thursday for several weeks running is too much to ask of players at this level. "But we are looking for a high finish in the league, we have two cup semi-finals to look forward to, and hopefully we can use the next month to build up some momentum and finish the season strongly". Tuesday 18th March 2014 Winsford United celebrated their 700th League game with a 1-0 win over Maine Road. Wednesday 19th March 2014 The 1,000th First Division goal of the season was scored by Stuart Wellstead of 1874 Northwich from the penalty spot in the 17th minute of the game at AFC Darwen. Saturday 22nd March 2014 Daniel Murray's goal for Chadderton in the 1-1 draw at home to Holker Old Boys was Chaddy's 1750th League goal. Mark Keddie's opening goal in the 27th minute for Runcorn Town in the 4-0 win at Silsden was Town's 400th League goal.

Town’s trip to the Pavillions Runcorn Town 2-0 St Helens Town North West Counties Football League Premier Division Monday 17th March 2014 Town in honourable reverse at Runcorn Runcorn Town 2 St. Helens Town 0 was the result last Monday evening at The Pavilions, but the score did scant justice to a strong display by St. Helens, as for most of the game there was very little between the teams and a repeat of last season’s 1-1 draw would have been a more representative scoreline. St. Helens had the majority of the chances in the first half and were unfortunate not to go ahead as early as the seventh minute when leading scorer Andy Gillepie burst through the home defence and rounded ‘keeper Stuart Plant, only to lose control at the crucial moment and the ball ran out of play. Three minutes later at the other end, Paul Shanley looked certain to score in a one-on-one on Ciaran Gibson, but the young Town goalie saved with his feet. Midway through the first half, Ed Richardson made a break down the left wing and crossed to Gillespie, but the St. Helens striker could only head narrowly wide and, with the visitors on top after 30 minutes, Michael Sykes-Wright was only just off target with a powerful drive. It was very much against the run of play that Runcorn Town went ahead four minutes later, when a route one high ball from captain Danny Dalton found the prolific James McShane and his pin-point header beat Gibson at his right-hand post. Neither side produced a chance of note during the remainder of the opening half and the interval arrived with the home side 1-0 ahead. Early in the second half, Gillespie could have levelled the scores, but his drive was well saved by Plant, then Danny Owens hit a 30-yard shot which only just cleared the Runcorn bar. Shortly afterwards, Shanley again brought the best out of Gibson in the St. Helens goal and for the rest of the game, defences were very much on top as St. Helens tried in vain to get a shot on target, their best effort coming with 10 minutes remaining when Lee Crompton just failed to connect with a low cross from the right when an equaliser looked a distinct possibility. Runcorn Town secured the points four minutes from time when the St. Helens defence finally cracked, substitute Luke Edwards’ shot deflecting unluckily off Andy Mawdsley past the hapless Gibson, the move coming from a disputed corner kick. This latest defeat saw St. Helens Town drop to fifteenth in the NW Counties Premier Division table, but they remain comfortably clear of the relegation zone with valuable games in hand of most of their rivals ahead of Tuesday’s home game against AFC Blackpool, with AFC Liverpool due to visit Brocstedes Park on Saturday, 29th March. There have been distinct signs of a return to form in the last few games and with a couple of wins under their belts, an end-of-season flourish could yet see Town finish in the top half of the table. A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

. . . of St Helens Town AFC

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league.

Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place publicaccess AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. St Helens Town Commercial Manager, Darryl Picton, said: “The idea to forge this partnership came from Fabrice’s story. “Never before have I witnessed such an event that has brought football fans, clubs and

. . . Our Charity Partner players together in support of one man as what happened on that horrific day at White Hart Lane. The story touched the hearts of everyone and transcended sport. Those events really hit home to everyone at St Helens Town how quickly and unexpectedly tragedy can strike in a community and having access to this essential equipment will save hundreds of lives. “We are proud to be associated with Hearts and Goals and with Fabrice, and we will work tirelessly throughout the year to raise every penny possible for the campaign.” Trudie Lobban MBE, Founder and CEO of Arrhythmia Alliance, said: “We are absolutely delighted St Helens Town AFC have chosen our Hearts & Goals campaign as their official charity campaign. “Hearts & Goals focuses on tackling the UK’s biggest killer, sudden cardiac arrest, which kills 100,000 people in the UK every year. We have already been able to help communities up and down the country place lifesaving AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and with partners like St Helens we can continue this work. “It is clear all involved at the club are very passionate about the campaign and we are delighted to welcome them on board.” A host of fundraising events are already planned throughout the year, including a a Race Night on Saturday 26th October and Comedy & Curry Night on Saturday 7th December. For full details of events or to make a donation to the campaign contact Darryl Picton on 07908 833 554 or by email at sthelenstownafc@gmail.com Visit www.heartsandgoals.org for more information.

St Helens Town AFC . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought Combination Championship Trophy pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured from Wesley Bridge in 1972 below) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

. . . Managers 1946-Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 200607 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - 2013 Ian Granite (pictured left) became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 201213 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

NWCFL Club News . . . Congleton Town - after suffering a floodlight failure in December during the match against West Didsbury & Chorlton, and subsequent problems with the faulty pylon thereafter, the club's board has taken the decision to replace the floodlights at Booth Street. They have engaged the services of an electrical contractor and have started work looking to replace the pylons and fixtures in the close season. The new pylons will be telescopic, enabling simpler and speedier repair in the event of bulb or control gear failure. Daisy Hill - there will be a Race Night in the club house at New Sirs this coming Saturday 22nd March, starting at 7 pm. West Didsbury & Chorlton - the club's new stand was open and in use for the first time on Tuesday night for the game against Runcorn Linnets. The "sponsor a seat" scheme, launched to help meet the costs of the stand, has been a success so far with 20 of the 50 seats allocated for sponsorship already having been allocated to sponsors, who receive a season ticket for next season as part of the scheme. Nelson - the Admirals have season 2013-14 replica jerseys available for sale. Both the home blue shirt and the orange away shirt are available for £20 in all sizes. Items are available from the bar on match days or can be ordered by e-mail at info@nelsonfc.com. AFC Liverpool - a group including club chairman Chris Stirrup and manager Paul Moore will be undertaking a sponsored walk for club funds on Saturday 29th March - by walking to the Reds' game against St Helens Town at Brocstedes Park in Ashton-in-Makerfield. Sponsors and other walkers to join the group on the day are currently being sought. Andrew Stephenson MP - the Conservative Member of Parliament for Pendle was an interested watcher from afar, when the derby clash between Barnoldswick Town and Colne took place on Tuesday night. As well as tweeting a good luck message to both teams before the game, Mr Stephenson said he was “in Westminster so will have to follow on twitter!”

Not Just Any Old Scarf . . . At last November’s Trautmann Memorial game Town received a large number of auction items and gifts but one stands out from the crowd. One of the club’s guests that day was Tim Mantle who was representing the Trautmann Foundation as one of their UK Ambassadors. Tim brought along with him a gift for the club which has some personal connection to Bert. Bert had attended Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League away encounter with Villareal back in November 2011 and having watched his former club win comfortably 0-3 he made his way back to his friend’s car where he was spotted by City fans! Tim takes up the story, ‘Bert always had a huge amount of time for fans and he never distanced himself from those who remembered him. ‘As one person recognised him, then another, it soon became a friendly ‘mob’ of around 300 fans who besieged the car. They all wanted to get a glimpse of or a word with, the City legend. ‘The narrow streets of the old town resonated to the raucous sound of “There’s only one Bert Trautmann. And the average age of these fans, probably twenty five to thirty years. Yes, most of them were born more than twenty years after he played his last game for City in 1964. 'Imagine that, they were all intimately familiar with the great man, they all wanted a piece of him that night. He cried, I cried, a lovely sight to behold, an 87 year old king enshrined in warmth and adoration. A wonderful moment. Indeed there is only one Bert Trautmann. ‘Bert was handed a commemorative scarf from the game by one of the supporters which he gladly accepted and a year or so later that was passed to me and I felt it would make a nice addition to Town’s Trautmann memorabilia collection.’ Club Chairman John McKiernan added, ‘It was a lovely touch from Tim and the club is delighted with what is a unique piece of memorabilia. ‘We have a large number of items which have a connection to Bert including signed books, programmes and photographs which we are hoping will make an excellent exhibition when we eventually have a base back in St Helens.’ ‘There are lots of stories out there about Bert, many of them with a St Helens connection and we’d love to try to document these. If anyone has any tales they’d like to recount or items of memorabilia relating to Bert we could loan please get in touch.’ Where you the person who gave Bert the scarf? If so get in touch and we can update this story. John McKiernan sthelenstownfc@hotmail.co.uk Mobile 07713 338 682
