Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this contest against our friends from AFC Liverpool. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. It seems ironic that during our ground share here at Edge Green Street that AFC Liverpool return to where their adventure began back in July 2008 when our two sides played out a 1-1 draw with former Town and now AFC Liverpool defender Neil Jones netting the hosts goal from the penalty spot.. The visitors had spent the previous three seasons in the North West Counties League, Division One and thanks to a late lifeline with Leigh Genesis and Rossendale United both folding and Holker Old Boys choosing not to accept promotion their fourth position finish was good enough to see them elevated to the Premier Division. This evening’s programme has been produced a little earlier than normal and as such there is an insert to the programme with up to date league results, tables and stats. As time of going to press I am unaware of the weekends results but AFC Liverpool have had a difficult beginning to life in the Premier Division having gone down 3-2 against Alsager Town and 1-0 last midweek against Ashton Athletic with both matches taking place at Valerie Park. Town on the other hand have done better than expected in their first two matches of the new season a Jimmy McBride’s charges recorded the show result of the opening day of the season defeating Ramsbottom United 3-2 here at Edge Green Street coming from a goal behind to race into a 3-1 lead with a goal from Leon Williams and an Andy Ledger brace. This was followed up with a 0-0 draw at Crilly Park the following Tuesday in a game where Town dominated possession but were unable to turn this into a goal. Let’s be honest we would have bitten a hand off for four points from the first two contests of the season and so we have to be happy with the return from the opening couple of contests. Let get behind Town this evening and hopefully cheer them on to a positive result. Enjoy the game. . . Jeff Voller PS Don’t forget the 100+ Club draw which will take place at the end of August - new members welcome!

In Town Today . . . AFC Liverpool was the brainchild of Liverpool FC fan Alun Parry, who was becoming increasingly frustrated at the cost and difficulty in obtaining tickets for the Premiership club's matches. Early in 2008 he created a website and posted links to it on various forums, with the response being positive enough to move to the next stage and create a steering group to make the club a reality. At the beginning of March 2008 AFC Liverpool was officially formed and it was made clear that the club was not in response to the ownership issue at Anfield, more a reaction to issues at the top end of football in general. By May Derek Goulding, who steered Burscough to the 2nd round of the FA Cup in 2005-6, was appointed manager and the following month the club arranged a groundshare with Prescot Cables and had been accepted into the Vodkat League. The club's first game was a 1-1 draw in a friendly with St Helens Town on 16th July 2008 and they began their inaugural league season extremely well, beating Darwen 5-0 in their first competitive game and going on a run of ten wins in the first 11 games. However they failed to keep this momentum going, with some off field troubles being coupled with a loss of form on the pitch and some key players leaving. The ship was steadied however although there was disappointment in May 2009 in missing out on promotion to the premier division as the club eventually finished fourth. However victory in the final of the 1st Division Trophy over Padiham at Ashton Athletic provided some consolation. 2009-10 began with three successive victories but after this the Reds began to slip away and never looked like serious promotion contenders. An impressive victory at leaders Stone Dominoes at the end of January briefly put promotion in their own hands but after this they won just one of their next eight games and fell off the pace. . . . AFC Liverpool Collieries on Easter Monday Derek Goulding left the club and ex assistant and goalkeeping coach Paul Moore returned as manager.. Under Moore's stewardship AFC had a strong end to the 2009-10 campaign, winning five out of their last seven league games to climb to fifth in the league and they also retained the 1st Division Trophy, coming from behind to beat Cheadle Town 2-1 in the final at Flixton. 2010-11 also began in promising fashion, the Reds going on a ten game unbeaten run after an opening day loss at AFC Darwen. However despite amassing their highest ever points total promotion never looked probable due to the outstanding form of AFC Blackpool and Runcorn Town and they finished 4th. There was disappointment too in the 1st Division Trophy when they reached the final only to lose to Atherton Collieries. In the FA Vase, steady progress was made to the 3rd round, where their dreams of Wembley were dashed by a 7-1 hammering at Whitley Bay, who would go on to claim a 3rd successive triumph. However at last summer’s AGM there was a pleasant surprise when Rossendale were expelled from the league and Formby demoted to the 1st Division. Holker Old Boys declined an invitation to take up a place in the premier division, meaning AFC Liverpool, who had finished fourth in the table, leapt at the chance that was offered to them. A word from the Dugout . . . Hello and welcome to Edge Green Street for our second home game of the North West Counties Football League 2011-2012 season. May I take this opportunity to welcome and congratulate our opponents today AFC Liverpool on gaining promotion from the First Division last season, something I am sure they will be trying to build on this season. I am writing these notes before our game away at Colne FC so cannot comment on events from Saturday’s game, but going back to our games against Rammy and Atherton LR, 4 points from 6 is not a bad return, although the lads were gutted not to take maximum points at LR after dominating the game and making a host of chances. The league will only really start to take shape after 10 or 12 games when teams start to settle down and I have no doubt you will start to see the contenders and strugglers in their rightful positions. Back to today’s game and more importantly today’s opponents. If we are to get anything out of today’s game we must have the right work ethic because AFC Liverpool will be determined to improve on the start they have made to this season, and if we stand off and let them dictate the play we will be in trouble. We need to give them the respect they deserve, but on the other hand we need to force our game and our pattern of play upon them and not let them get a foothold in the game. We have a lot of lads who growing into playing at this level and hopefully the chance to prove themselves will be all the motivation they need, hopefully the more experienced players will help them along the way. I personally think we have a great mixture of lads here and they are growing as a squad of players determined to do well together, yes there is a lot of rivalry for positions in the side, but it’s healthy competition and good for the team. So let’s all get behind the lads and hopefully get the result we desire. And finally let’s hope all the players, officials and supporters of both teams enjoy the game and the hospitality on offer this evening and we see one or two of you again on Saturday afternoon against Atherton LR for our FA Cup game. Enjoy the Game Jimmy McBride

A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good evening and a warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this NWCFL Premier Division encounter. We welcome our friends and rivals AFC Liverpool and I hope they enjoy their short stay with us. May I also extend a warm welcome to tonight’s match sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool and our match ball sponsors The Rockware Pub, St. Helens; once again many thanks for your continued support. Tonight’s programme notes have been written prior to our visit to Colne on Saturday and unfortunately I am missing this evening’s game swapping the delights of St Helens for a few days in Rome. Hopefully the weekend will have resulted in another good performance to continue our fine start to the season for the team. The opening day victory over Ramsbottom United will have surprised a few NWCFL followers and to be fair ‘Rammy’ dominated the opening half and could have been a couple of goals to the good before the lads really got going in the second period. Two goals from Andy Ledger and one from fellow new boy Leon Williams saw Town home. Having read the various posts on the Ramsbottom forum I am a little disappointed they concentrated more on the performance of the officials and their second half performance, giving little or no credit to their opponents - that’s football I suppose! Last Tuesday’s visit to Atherton LR proved to be a frustrating one as the team failed to fire on all cylinders and while dominating the game and the share of the chances it would be the home side who were happier with a point at the final whistle - the goalless draw was Town’s first for some sixty eight matches! AFC Liverpool have had a tough start to their Premier Division campaign; following an opening weekend defeat at home to Alsager Town (2-3) I saw them last Tuesday evening as they went down 0-1 to a solid looking Ashton Athletic outfit who simply out-battled the reds on a rain-soaked evening at Valerie Park. Of course this is not the first time our two clubs have met as Town had the honour of being AFC Liverpool’s inaugural opponents back in the summer of 2008. As last season ended it looked unlikely we would meet in league competition but a league ‘reshuffle’ involving the relegation of Formby along with Holker Old Boys declining the offer of promotion has meant AFC Liverpool find themselves in the NWCFL top flight for the first time.

Match Report & Photos . . . Saturday 6th August 2011 NWCFL Premier Division - St Helens Town 3-2 Ramsbottom United Town got the 2011/12 season of to the best possible start with a 3-2 win over last season’s runners-up Ramsbottom United. The visitors had secured the vast majority of last season’s squad and added some useful looking signings as they looked to go one better this term but Town under Jimmy Bride for the first time in almost ten years looked to scupper this bid. The opening exchanges were quiet as the two sides felt each other out before the visitors as many would have predicted took control of the contest. Dale Newbrook in the Town goal was called into action as he had to be alert to held a low effort from Ryan Moore and then punch clear after a corner had been turned back goalwards by Grant Spencer. Another effort saw Moore meet a right wing cross but Newbrook held his effort. Moments later Town had skipper Shaun McKeegan to thank for keeping parity as he cleared Ian Flannery’s free header off the line. The visitors broke the deadlock after 26 minutes when a right wing cross from Spencer was met by the unmarked Jon Robinson who took advantage of the space to send the free header home from 6 yards out. The lead could have been doubled when Spencer’s corner from the left was not cleared and the resultant effort from Moore was held by Newbrook at his right hand post. Seconds later at the other end Town had a decent shout for a penalty turned down when a counter culminated in Carl Addison linking with Jay Gardner who burst into the box and just managed to get a shot off under a heavy challenge from a Ramsbottom defender the ball was smuggled away and the protest was waved away. The half ended with two decent chances for the visitors to push their advantage home when first Bernard Morley effort was block by Iain Dyson and then a back pass from Michael Burns was scuffed by Newbrook to Robinson who ran at the stopper who recovered well to save his initial effort with the rebound breaking back to the striker who seemed certain to score but somehow managed to fire wide of the right hand upright. Town thanked their lucky stars and drew level 35 seconds after the restart when a fine move saw Dyson find Che Morgan on the left wing and his diagonal ball released Gardner on the right of the area before he squared to Leon Williams to fire home opening his Town account. The hosts were buoyed by this quick strike and took the game to their visitors McKeegan won a header on the edge of the box and Williams attempt at an overhead kick was held by Grant Shenton in the Ramsbottom goal. Another good move saw Andy Ledger and Williams link with the latter finding McKeegan whose effort went over the bar. Town took the lead on 68 minutes when Williams played a ball over the top of the Ramsbottom defensive line releasing strike partner Ledger to run through on goal Shenton closed him down but the striker got a stroke of luck as his initial shot rebounded back off the stopper struck him on the legs and found the back of the net. Ramsbottom were unlucky not to draw level on 75 minutes when Spencer’s free kick centrally from 25 yards out thundered off the crossbar and behind for a goal kick. A couple of minutes later the Town fans were in dreamland as Williams sent a right wing corner into the area and Burns at the far post sent it back into the danger area McKeegan won the ball in the air and turned it towards Ledger on the left hand post he had his back to goal and executed an exquisite over head kick into the top left hand corner of the net to put Town 3-1 up. There was a touch of déjà vu when Ramsbottom’s Flannery netted to reduce the arrears with five minutes of normal time to play as Town had ceded a 3-1 lead at The Riverside in April to end up drawing 3-3. There was one final chance for the visitors to take something from the contest when Spencer sent a left wing corner into the box which Robinson met on the far post with a free header but he could only steer his effort wide of the right hand upright as Town defied predictions to secure the victory. NWCF League News . . . Squires Gate Football Club has literally gone to the dogs. In a bid to boost the club's limited coffers at the lower reaches of non-league football, the club has come up with a novel idea to encourage healthier attendances at its matches. Fans can now enjoy a Hot Dog and a ‘warming cuppa’ of tea or coffee at all its home games this season for free by purchasing a copy of the club’s attractive match programme. The promotion was launched at Tuesday night’s league game with Colne which Gate lost 2-1, and the idea is the brainchild of Gate chairman Stuart Hopwood who said: “We are always looking for ideas to boost attendances at our games and this is one way we can reward the fans for their loyal support.” Fans entering the School Road ground for the attractive NWCFL Premier Division fixture with Congleton Town on Saturday August 13th, can, courtesy of a match programme purchase, enjoy admission, a programme, a hot dog and a cup of tea or coffee all for £7 (£5 for Senior Citizens). Squires Gate players Stuart Horn (left) and player-manager Russ McKenna are pictured opposite showing fans what they can expect when they watch one of their games this season. Photo courtesy of Albert Cooper. New kit deal for Ashton Town Ashton Town have announced that Surridge Sports have joined forces with the club as their Official Kit and Leisurewear Partner. The sportswear company, based in the North West, will supply Home and Away Kits as well as leisurewear to the club over the next two seasons. Town General Manager Darryl Picton said: “Ashton Town are pleased to have joined forces with our new kit supplier Surridge Sports. Whilst we sincerely thank our previous suppliers, this partnership takes the club in a new direction as we look to start to build a brand at the club and due the nature of the deal we can now offer a better selection of club leisurewear to our supporters. We also welcome on board our new first team kit sponsor Fastrack Fasteners and our new Reserve team kit sponsor Fibreproof Roofing Systems Ltd.” The club have also announced their intention to follow in the footsteps of European giants Barcelona, by adopting a charity logo to adorn the club’s shirt instead of a sponsor for the forthcoming season. Whilst the clubs home kits will feature the club’s principal sponsors logo, both the first team and reserve team away strips will feature the logo of the Little Hearts Matter charity, which supports families with children born with severe heart defects. The charity is close to the hearts of those at the club as Reserve Team Manager Jez Neild’s eldest son was born with such a heart defect, and the charity have continuously supported his family over the last 14 years. Darryl said: “We are proud to announce our partnership with the Little Hearts Matter charity. By placing the charity logo on our shirts, we hope to assist in raising the profile of this organisation, and the club will undertake a series of fundraising events throughout the season in aid of this great cause. We can confirm our first event will take place on Friday September 2nd when a team of Wigan Athletic legends visit Edge Green Street to take on a team of Ashton Town Vets. All proceeds from the gate receipts will go towards the charity fund. We would encourage fans of all counties clubs to support our fundraising events where possible and hope they will attend our events to show their support.” NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

. . . Match Report & Photos Tuesday 9th August 2011 NWCFL Premier Division - Atherton LR 0-0 St Helens Town St Helens Town left Crilly Park this evening wondering how they had not taken the three points on offer after dominating large periods of this contest. There was not much goalmouth action in the opening quarter of an hour but both sides could have recorded goals. First up after five minutes Leon Williams sent a right wing corner into the box and it was met by the unmarked Andy Flood who just failed to steer his header under the crossbar. Five minutes later at the opposite end Chris Lomax collected a weak clearance and sent it goalwards from 20 yards but Dale Newbrook had it covered and tipped the effort over the bar. Town were dominating the possession but failing to cut through the resolute home rearguard and both sides had carved out another effort each by the half hour mark. The visitors saw John Coady link with James Fogg and the latter fired wide of the right hand upright from the edge of the area. A couple of minutes later Leon Williams rose above two LR defenders to win a high through ball and he had advanced before shooting just over the bar under pressure with the home stopper beaten. The first period ended with a good spell for the visitors when a couple chances were carved out. The first saw Ian Frazer send the ball in from the right wing free kick and Michael Burns headed just wide from 8 yards out. This was followed just before the interval when good work by Andy Ledger got to the byline on the right and sent a fizzing cross into the box which Williams was just unable to steer on target and it went harmlessly over the crossbar. The hosts nearly took the lead in the early stages of the second period on the counter attack. A swift break saw Andy Olsen released down the right and his effort from the edge of the box was well saved by Newbrook in the Town goal. At the other end a dangerous run and cross from Ledger was turned behind by Gareth Grant and from the corner Williams delivered before the ball was cleared back to him he resent the ball into the area and Iain Dyson rose highest looping a header off the underside of the crossbar and a home defender chested the loose ball to his keeper. Further Town pressure saw Che Morgan advance down the left wing where he beat three defenders and got to the byline, his cross found Shaun McKeegan in a great position but he could not turn the ball goalwards the loose ball broke to Burns on the edge of the box and his effort beat the keeper but not the left hand upright. The visitors continued to press and had the home side penned in their own half. Carl Addison beat his man down the right before delivering from the edge of the box his ball found Williams who only had to divert the ball on target to score but he just failed to get enough of a touch and another golden opportunity was wasted. More pressure saw a right wing cross pick out Ledger at the front post but the striker could not get his effort on target. Town were beginning to get frustrated and this boiled over when on 86 minutes a spat between Morgan and Atherton’s Michael Chester saw the Town defender pick up his second yellow card and the home man lucky to escape with just a yellow card after kicking out at the Town defender. Town created one last chance in added on time when Mike Kavanagh collected the ball on the right wing and sent a cross into the danger area, some last ditch defending saw the hosts turn the ball behind with plenty of Town men in attendance and the resultant corner came to nothing. So Town left Atherton frustrated. Positives can be drawn from the contest as this was Town’s first clean sheet for a long while but whilst the possession and approach play was good the final ball at times was lacking and the handful of good chances created were not converted into at least one goal.
