St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

Talk of the Town Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Alsager Town. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Alsager Town to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this evening. It has been a rather frustrating time for the first team since we last played here against Bacup Borough on Saturday 20th February. The boys did not put in the best performance of the season and indeed it could be said that they had played better in a 2-1 defeat the previous Saturday, but three goals were enough to see off the visitors and we started looking forward to the coming week, one which should have seen us host Wigan Robin Park in the Quarter Final of the Vodkat League Cup and visit Atherton LR in League action. As has happened on quite a number of occasions this season we were twice thwarted by the weather first the Cup tie fell foul of a frozen pitch on Tuesday evening before the visit to Atherton LR was cancelled early on Saturday morning due to a waterlogged pitch. So we have had to wait to this evening to get back on the park. This evening’s visitors Alsager will be up for the game having enjoyed their 4-1 victory over Squires Gate on Saturday ensuring they bounced back well for a midweek 4-0 defeat at Bootle.

JOHN BURNS

I am sure that Gary and the lads will be ready for this evenings encounter after the enforced break and will be looking to secure a maximum return in what will be a difficult game.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with today’s visitors, friends and rivals Alsager Town. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with tonight’s match officials and our own home support have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality during their short stay as well as an entertaining encounter! Many thanks to tonight’s match sponsors Johnson Toyota Liverpool who have been fantastic in their support of the club this season, long may it continue. We also say many thanks to Whitehead’s Solicitors who are tonight’s match ball sponsors. Our last match saw the lads return to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Bacup Borough here at Knowsley Road. To be honest the score line was a little harsh on our visitors but having faired poorly against the Lancashire outfit in recent seasons we’d have taken any sort of victory. Town’s goals came from Mike Scully whose neat turn and left footed strike opened the scoring was followed by a howler from the Bacup ‘keeper before Iain Dyson wrapped-up the three points with a bullet header in the dying minutes. Since then we’ve lost two fixtures to the weather; last Tuesday’s planned home League Challenege Trophy game v Wigan Robin Park fell foul to a frozen pitch—this game will now be played on Monday 29 March. Last Saturday saw our trip to Atherton LR postponed due to a waterlogged playing surface. All our games have now been re-arranged and fixtures are detailed in the centre-pages. Proud

LANES TROPHIES

Congratulations go to Reserve boss Steve Pennington and his team as they made it to the semi-finals of the John Gregson Memorial Trophy competition; a recent 0-2 Group B win at Alder FC secured top spot and a guaranteed semi-final place. The team slipped-up in the League last Saturday when they lost 2-5 at Bobbies Lane to basement outfit Blueline FC. The club will be holding a Golf Day in conjunction with the St Helens Town Juniors - it will take place on Sunday 11 July 2010 and we are looking for entrants. Please see the advert in tonight’s programme and give it your support!! Enjoy the game and join us in the Black Bull after the game for the Town Man of the Match presentations. . .

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

In Town Today . . . The merger of Alsager Institute and Alsager United formed Alsager AFC in 1965. The merger came about due to the lack of pitches in the village. They acquired the Wood Park facility in 1967,that was then seeded ready for the following season, where it was first played on in 1968/69. Alsager AFC was playing in the Crewe league at this stage. In the early ‘70’s the club decided they would like to try for the Mid Cheshire League which they were successful in doing by bringing the ground up to a higher standard. They remained in this league until 1985/86 when they were runners-up. Alsager AFC then closed for a season due to lack of funds and support. They then re-opened with a youth side, remaining in the Crewe Premier League for two seasons. In 1991/92 they managed to regain entry into the Mid Cheshire League Division Two, where they remained until 1998/99 when the committee decided to try for the Springbank Vending League, as most of the team were potteries based. Steve Booth who built a strong squad, which was able to challenge for the title in the first season, managed the team at this stage. Unfortunately Alsager were pipped at the post, when Norton FC needing to win their last five games, did so and took the title with Alsager AFC finishing runners-up. Before all this had unfolded in the league, the team were doing well enough by the Christmas of 1998 that the committee decided that they would apply for the North West Counties League. After a lot of hard work by the committee, Alsager AFC successfully passed the criteria necessary to gain entry and a second place in the league was enough to gain promotion. Alsager’s first season in the football pyramid system got off to a great start as early form took them to the top of the league well into September. Good cup runs also followed with Alsager reaching the semi-final of the NWCFL Second Division Trophy, where they were beaten over two legs by Tetley Walker and they also reached the quarter-finals of the NWCFL Cup, where they forced first division title contenders Mossley to a replay. Bad form after Christmas 1999 and the decision by manager Steve Booth to leave the club saw a new management team step into the fold. Greg Clowes and Dorrian Garner – who was already a player at the club – joined from Norton FC. last years conquerors. They were in charge for the last 10 games of the season and managed to steady the ship and gain Alsager a creditable 12th spot in their first season. Greg and Dorrian’s first full season in charge got off to a shaky start, as results didn’t go their way. After a few changes to the playing staff things started to turn around and a good run of results from the start of December until the end of the season saw Alsager finish 7th. For the final six months of the season Alsager were always in the top three form teams and along with Warrington Town kept the most clean sheets. Progress to the grounds facilities with the addition of floodlights in August 2001, a new stand Executive Programme Sponsors 2009-10 JOHNSONS TOYOTA LIVERPOOL 60 Rimrose Road, Bootle L20 4TX Tel: 0151 515 9738 johnsonsliverpool.toyota.co.uk

. . . Alsager Town planned for the far side and with the majority of the team resigned, Greg and Dorrian were hoping to make a better start and promotion was a real prospect. During the summer 2001 it was decided that the team name would change back to its original name of Alsager Town FC whilst also running a team under the name of Alsager AFC in the Staffordshire Springbank Vending League. A great season in 2001/02 and with Stand unable to gain promotion due to their ground grading results, Alsager got promotion and enjoyed a good first season in the first division. Season 2002/2003 saw Alsager finish 11th, followed by 2003/2004 when the restructuring of the pyramid system was introduced and a chance to get promotion to Unibond. These hopes were dashed however with a “misunderstanding” of the rules of the grading criteria and a finishing place of 9th with the best defensive record in the division. The 2004/5 season saw Alsager finish in their highest league position ever with a 7th place finish in Division One. Alsager finished on 68 points 8 points behind Town in 3rd place and 31 points behind Champions Fleetwood Town. Alsager made that extra step the following season and finished in 3rd position which was enough to secure promotion as the UniBond League expanded again. The club had a creditable start to life at the next level and finished 14th in the 24 team league. The UniBond League expanded to introduce two division one’s (North & South) and the Bullets were placed in the Southern division for the 2007/8 season On the field they had another mid-table finish but were relegated because they failed to meet grading requirements. The owners Ansell and Mitchell consequently departed from the club, leaving it with an uncertain future. Former chairman Peter Clegg returned to the club to re-take the helm. His intention was to run the club for the community. Currently the structure of the club comprises of a First Team which play in the North West Counties Premier Division and a second team in the Staffordshire County Senior League. Ladies Team, “Bourne United” who play in the West Midlands Premier League on a Sunday, play their home games at the Town Ground. The Club now have a total of 19 teams linked to the club from the under 8s to the first team, and the intention is to bring on those youngsters to eventually play for the first team and maybe onto a career in football at even higher levels. Before the start of the 2008/9 season Alsager Town appointed former Witton Albion reserves coach, Neil Gill as manager of the First Team. The Bullets had a difficult start to the season but recovered to finish in an excellent seventh position despite much turmoil both on and off the pitch. This term has seen the Bullets find life difficult again and they are currently at the wrong end of the table. They are also looking for a new Chairman as Peter Clegg had recently stood down from the position.

Vodkat League News Weather Update from Bacup Last Saturday’s visitors to Knowsley Road woke up on Friday morning to a white landscape as their West View Stadium is again under snow. Most of us, if we gazed out of the window, would see blue skies and sunshine. It's unlikely though that many around the North West would be afforded the wintry scenes that greeted Bacup Borough manager Brent Peters when he arrived at the Brian Boys West View Stadium this morning - as demonstrated from the pictures below. Brent said: "Thankfully we are away on Saturday but with a bad forecast for here in East Lancashire coming in at the beginning of next week, the Saturday 27th February fixture at home to Winsford is in serious doubt already, with the playing surfaces and terracing covered in snow. The pictures - which were taken at 11.15 am on Friday morning (19 February) and are proof of the problems we are encountering in East Lancashire. "Bacup Borough have still twenty three matches to play, with only 13 weeks left to the conclusion of the season. Do miracles happen?"

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

Around The Grounds School Road – Squires Gate I’ve always had a fondness for School Road ever since I made my first visit there with Town, whether it’s the atmosphere or the fresh sea a ir t he r e ’ s d e f in i te l y something about the place. It’s a ground that has a very open feeling about it, a refreshing feeling unlike the prison type environment some other grounds offer. It’s got a very much semipro look about it, the pitch is well looked after and even has the darker and lighter green stripes across it, like Wembley. Although this is where the similarities to Wembley end, the grounds surroundings aren’t anything like as plush as you might expect. Covered seating and standing is available on one side of the ground whilst the other side provides ample amounts of covered standing that would easily accommodate the average crowd figure. Behind each goal is open standing and you could almost touch the goal line from these positions, allowing you to get right up close to the action. The clubhouse at the ground isn’t massive and has a limited selection of beverages. Likewise the compact canteen offers pie and peas, then pretty much nothing else. So possibly if planning a trip to School Road, bring your own sandwiches and flask. Otherwise it’s a perfectly nice facility for watching a football match, and on a warm summers afternoon it’s only a stonesthrow from the beach and the fun fair if you fancy some extracurricular activities before or after the game then an ideal location. Overall score: 5/10

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

St Helens Town AFC . . . Re-formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

. . . A Brief History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-ofWar Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

Introduction to the . . . Graeme McCall: Keeper in his second spell at the club after rejoining in the close season. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keeper’s jersey. Kevin Woods: Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones: Commanding centre half now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke: Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Rob Hanley: Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Iain Dyson: Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club’s top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond, had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell: Brother of Graeme, followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Adam Gilchrist: Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield. Marc Stephens: Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Dougie Pitts: Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

St. Helens Town squad Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen ‘Ben’ Kay: Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Nick McLoughlin: Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Paul Monteith: Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Peter Birch: Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possesses good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces. Luke Faulkner: Seventeen year old central defender who has recently joined the club from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Lee Riley: Joined the club last season as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables. Gary Bickerstaffe: Rejoined the club late last season as manager having had a previous spell as a player in the 1990s. His arrival last term ensured we staved off relegation comfortably with eight wins from our last 11 league encounters. A mid-field dynamo at the height of his playing career Gary has graced a number of clubs including Congleton Town, Winsford United and Bangor City and has been assistant Manager at both Warrington Town and Congleton and Manager at Garswood United. Other squad players include prolific strikers David Burns and Jamie Foster along with Andy Gillespie and Danny Clarke who have all stepped up from St Helens Town Reserve team football so far this season.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

Fan’s Eye View Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road for this evenings Vodkat, North West Counties League Premier Division match against Alsager Town. May the travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result. So the only real winner of recent times has been the weather with Town’s last two matches being postponed, one through a frozen pitch last Tuesday when winter threatened to take hold again and the other last Saturday when too much rain caused the pitch to be unplayable. This means the last competitive match Town played was 10 days ago, the 3-0 victory over Bacup Borough. A performance of character, grit and determination brought about the victory against the Lancashire rivals and provided the much needed bounce-back from the defeat to Padiham seven days earlier. Mike Scully’s goal to give Town the lead was an absolute peach and Iain Dyson’s header at the end of the game rounded off a much needed result for the lads, although a few thank you notes will probably have been sent to James Dryden. The Bacup keeper committed a howler of epic proportions as he somehow managed to drop Phil Mitchell’s out swinging corner over his own line when completely unchallenged by any other player. Despite the large gap since their last game Town will be looking to keep the momentum going and pick up another victory this evening. The called off match at the weekend gave me an opportunity to take in the match between the Reserve side and Blueline in the Liverpool County Premier League Division 2 North, the ressies going down 2-5 in what was an eye-opening game in more ways than one. Onto tonight’s match now though and the visitors this evening are Alsager Town from Cheshire, spending their 2nd year in the North West Counties League after their relegation from the Unibond League on ground grading issues. It would be fair to say that Alsager haven’t had the best of seasons so far as they currently lie in 17th position in the league, but they come into this match on the back of a fine 4-1 victory against Squires Gate which has gone some way to easing a potential relegation worry (a glance at the league table will show what I mean). Recent results against Alsager have been mixed, Town won 3-2 on the opening day of last season at Alsager and they lost 0-1 on this ground last term as part of the winter of discontent that would see Town go 14 games before picking up a win. It’s going to have to be a top notch performance this evening then if Town are to reap a reward from the fixture, and with other teams having played games whilst Town haven’t they have slipped to 6th in the league. Yes Town have games in hand to play, but they are only useful if you win them. I’m sure Gary and the players will not want a slip up tonight and I hope that the players have been training hard in the meantime. Lets get behind them tonight and hopefully we can cheer them on to victory. Stand tall and play proud boys, we’re right behind you.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

Vodkat League News Bacup Bid To Welcome 2010 In an attempt to play their first home fixture since October 31st, Bacup Borough have moved their midweek game against Maine Road back 24 hours from their normal midweek night of Wednesday. The game will now take place - weather permitting - on Thursday 4th March with a 7.45pm kick off at the Brian Boys West View Stadium. Bacup boss Brent Peters explained: "The current weather is heavy snow showers, with little improvement forecast until Tuesday and then supposedly the weather by the day improves. By putting this fixture forward by twenty four hours will give us a better chance of playing the game. "The move was agreed with both clubs, and then sanctioned by the League Management Committee. “Obviously it is impossible to guarantee at this stage whether the game will be played as we are not able to control the weather, but based on the forecast for our region this move was the most sensible to give us a better realistic chance".

Bootle Attendance Record Broken Bootle have confirmed that the attendance at the Delta Taxis Stadium for the recent game against Everton in Liverpool County Cup broke the club's all time record. The official crowd on the night was 1078, which beats the previous record for the stadium (which was 723 v AFC Liverpool on Boxing Day 2008) and also the record attendance for any home game staged by the club, which was previously 750 for the game against Carsharlton in the F.A. Trophy in 1981.

St Helens Town Juniors . . . The future’s bright for Town Established just three years ago, and now an FA Charter Standard Club, the ‘Town Juniors’ has grown into one of the largest junior outfits in the region. With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Burnley, Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players. The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team (pictured above) under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. For further information see the club’s website: www.sthelenstownjfc.co.uk.

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

Match Report Saturday 20th February Vodkat League Premier Division St Helens Town 3-0 Bacup Borough Town took all three points from this afternoon’s encounter despite a performance which was below par. The early stages saw Town in control and Mike Scully found Rob Hanley who cut inside and beating his defender and unleashed a shot that Steve Dryden did well to parry away from danger. On 10 minutes Scully was again involved when he collected the ball on the right wing and his curled attempt was held by Dryden in the Bacup goal. The visitors first threat came on 20 minutes when Lance Ogunyode collected a loose ball on the edge of the Town box and shot wide of the left hand upright. Half an hour into the contest Iain Dyson found John Elias on the right and his cross caused a problem for Dryden who had to tip over the bar to avert the danger. Further pressure saw a Town corner delivered by Phil Mitchell which Luke Faulkner met but could not steer on target. Another corner caused problems this time for Town as the ball broke to Lance Ogunyode on the edge of the block but a good block deflected it behind. As the interval approached Ben Kay released Hanley into the box but again his effort was parried by Dryden and the loose ball was eventually cleared. In added on time Scully did well to chase a ball into the box and he challenged Dryden for the ball in the air getting to the ball before the keeper, with his effort on target it took a clearance from Phil Prescott to stop Town taking the lead. Town had a warning four minutes into the second half when Chris Ogunyode advanced down the left and tried his luck Graeme McCall got a hand to it and touched it away from the target with the loose ball being cleared. The hosts took the lead on 54 minutes when Phil Mitchell won the ball just into the Bacup half and advanced in field he fed Scully on the edge of the box and a sublime first touch saw him find space to pick his spot and he found the net with an excellent finish. Bacup should have levelled ten minutes later when Martin Cosgrave linked with Prescott on the right with the latter sending in a cross which Falco Laurenzo connected with on the front post but could only send it wide of the far post. McCall was called into action again to preserve the lead when Laurnezo found Dave Luker and his shot was saved from close range. It was to be a mistake that almost assured the hosts would be victors in this contest. Phil Mitchell sent an outswinging corner into the six yard box and it looked to be a routine take for Dryden under no pressure. The stopper somehow managed to spill the ball into the net. The victory was secured on 89 minutes when another corner from Phil Mitchell was met by a thundering header from Dyson which found the back of the net to round off the victory. Vodkat League News No News On A New Club From Chester Following confirmation of Chester City's expulsion from the Football Conference on Friday, the League has received a number of enquiries from media organisations regarding the possibility of a new club from Chester playing in the Vodkat League next season. A group of supporters known as City Fans United have vowed to "continue to fight for the future of football in Chester", but League Secretary John Deal says: "We were contacted by an individual representing a club called FC Chester on 11th January, asking if we as a League would accept a new Club and asking for the League's point of view. We confirmed that this would not be a problem, as FC United of Manchester, AFC Liverpool and Runcorn Linnets have followed this route in recent years, but informed him of the initial steps they would need to taken if a newly formed club that was aiming to play in our Division One next season. These are that they need to be affiliated to a County FA, produce a business plan, seek approval from the FA Leagues Committee to bypass the normal entry level at Step 7 and obtain a ground up to the mimimum standard of Grade G. "Once this criteria has been met, the new club could be presented to the League's member clubs at the AGM in June to seek election to our League, subject to there being vacancies and after promotion issues with the Step 7 Leagues has been satisfied. As there are 5 vacancies at present and only 3 applications from Step 7 clubs this should not present a problem. We also passed details of the enquiry to Mike Appleby, the FA National Leagues Manager, to make him aware of the interest. "Since then, we have had no contact from them at all, but we have been contacted by both newspapers and radio stations in the past couple of days, asking if a newly formed club from Chester will be playing in our league next season. As it stands at the moment, the answer is no, as we have had no contact from anyone in Chester since the initial enquiry. However, if there is an intention that a new club is formed and the founders are interested in joining our League, we would urge them to get in contact as soon as possible, and we will be happy to provide any guidance and assistance they may require".

In Other News...... Republic of Ireland International at Cantilever Park club. Warrington Town have swooped to sign their first ex-Premier League footballer, Irish international Gareth Farrelly who starred for Aston Villa, Everton and Bolton. Midfielder Farrelly, who has been capped by the Republic of Ireland six times, will bring a huge amount of footballing experience to Warrington and still aged 34, has plenty left to offer on the pitch, says Town manager Joey Dunn. "Gareth will be our midfield general and it is a statement of our intent at moving Warrington Town forward as a club," said Dunn, who was delighted to welcome Farrelly to Cantilever Park. He has spent the past month training with the club and is set to make his home debut on Saturday March 6 against Radcliffe Borough. Farrelly spent five years at Aston Villa who signed him as a 16-yearold in 1992, and he made his Villa debut in September 1995. He moved to Everton in July 1997 for approximately £700,000, scoring the goal that preserved their Premier League status on the final day of the 1997–98 season. After two seasons with the blues he moved to Bolton, initially on loan. He won promotion back to the Premier League with Bolton in 2001, scoring the opening goal for them in the Play Off Final. He was subsequently loaned out to Rotherham, Burnley, Bradford City, and latterly Wigan. He made his full international début for Ireland as a 21-year-old, and has six caps. More recently he has played in the Irish Premier League with Cork City. Dunn added: "His wealth of experience will be a great asset to the club. His experience on the pitch will improve our quality and help us move the club in the right direction." Meanwhile Dunn has also signed Warrington based former England Schoolboy Tom Rutter, aged 21, a right winger from Radcliffe Borough and has set his sights on still further strengthening the squad as Town push for a play-off place. St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season

Saint’s Alive . . . TV presenter Tony Robinson visits a busy archaeological site to witness the work of volunteers inspired by his Time Team programme. “These dinosaur bones, recovered from an earlier dig, are one hundred million and seven years old,” the volunteers’ leader explains, lifting some impressive looking specimens from the trestle table. “That’s truly amazing!” exclaims Tony. “But tell me, how can you be so precise about their age?” “Well, a university professor dug them up, and he told us they were one hundred million years old,” explains the group leader, excitedly. “And that was exactly seven years ago!” Several days of torrential rain have seen flood waters rise to six feet. Mrs Black is sitting on her roof with a neighbour, waiting for help, when the neighbour spots a hat floating near the house. The hat seems to be moving back and forth, slowly but steadily, and she points it out to Mrs Black. “Oh yes, that will be my husband,” comments Mrs Black, showing no concern. “I told him he had to cut the grass today, come Hell or high water!” A sign seen hanging above a pub bar: If you are drinking to forget, please pay in advance. While her husband is watching TV, a wife asks him if he could fix the bathroom light. “Do I have ‘electrician’ printed on my forehead?” he snarls. So she asks him to repair the dripping taps in the kitchen and he barks, “Do I have ‘plumber’ printed on my forehead?” “Fine,” says his wife. “But could you at least mend the front steps?” “Mend the front steps?” he snaps. “Do I have ‘builder’ printed on my forehead?” And with that he storms out of the house. Later that night he returns to find the front steps have been fixed, the bathroom light works, and the kitchen taps no longer drip. “How did all these things get mended?” he demands. “Well,” explains his wife. “After you went off I sat outside, crying. A young man stopped and asked me what was wrong, so I told him what had happened. He offered to do all the repairs, and all I had to do in return was sleep with him or bake him a cake.” “Great!” says her husband. “So, what sort of cake did you bake?” “Bake a cake?” she replies, smiling. “Do I have ‘Delia Smith’ printed on my forehead?” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd. If you have any printable jokes you would like to share with your fellow supporters, please e-mail them to me on john@behindtheflag.co.uk go on, let’s all have a laugh.
