Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Ashton Athletic. I hope our visitors had a good if very short journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. Its been two and a half weeks since we last convened here at Edge Green Street to take on Tranmere Rovers in the Quarter Final of the Liverpool Senior Cup, alas it was not to be for Town as we went down 4-2 to our illustrious visitors who had some experienced players in their line up including Alan Mahon and Andy Robinson. After going an early goal behind Town levelled early in the second period through Liam Pearson before a disastrous spell saw Tranmere net three times in less than ten minutes, James Croxton netted a late consolation for the hosts but it was the end of the road for Town in the Senior Cup for another season. It was a long ten days in between games as the weather put paid to the next scheduled game here against Squires Gate two weeks ago. We had a run out against Evo-Stick Premier Division Burscough which resulted in a 1-0 defeat but an excellent bit of match practice for the lads. Last Saturday saw us visit Barnoldswick Town for the first time and similarly to the home game against them in August we did not put in our best performance and fell to a 3-0 reverse. We were then scheduled to pay our first visit to Runcorn Linnets new Millbank Linnets Stadium on Tuesday evening but we were again thwarted by the weather as the fixture fell foul of a waterlogged pitch and will now take place on Tuesday 1st March.

So onto this afternoons contest and we welcome Ashton Athletic to Edge Green Street, a venue that I am sure with be pretty familiar to them being just across town from their Brocstedes Park base. Athletic have been struggling at the wrong of the table this term and will be looking to get back to winning ways this afternoon. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter against our friends and local rivals from Ashton Athletic FC. Let’s hope the Athletic players, officials and supporters have had a safe, albeit short journey, and along with our own support are treated to an entertaining encounter. There are no easy games in the Vodkat League and we must not underestimate today’s visitors. Despite their basement position we are expecting another tough game and our own recent form needs to improve if we are going to take maximum points from the game. Last Saturday’s trip to Barnoldswick proved to be another disappointment as we went down 3-0 in a game that was probably closer than the scoreline suggests. The pitch was particularly ‘troublesome’ and the home side adapted well, especially when defending the club end of the ground which was very heavy. We were two-nil down at half time, despite having plenty of possession and a couple of good chances. The second half saw the lads dominate territorially but a penalty miss early in the half and a number of spurned chances - we were always vulnerable on the break and Barlick made it 3-0 and a comfortable three points with a late goal. Tuesday’s planned trip to Runcorn Linnets fell foul of the weather along with a number of other planned mid-week Vodkat league games. This fixture has now been re-arranged for Tuesday 1st March 2011. Off the pitch Iain Dyson has been appointed joint Manager alongside Lee Riley. Lee has recently taken a new job which is likely to mean shift work, and reduced availability, towards the end of the season. I am sure both Lee and Iain will continue with their great work on behalf of the club. Congratulations to our January 100+ Club winners Lisa Ball (£120), Liam Ryder (£60) and Dale Newbrook (£25). Our February draw will take place after next Saturday’ home fixture against Padiham. Anyone wanting to take part in the draw should see Andy Langley at today’s game.

In Town Today . . . Ashton Athletic Football Club was founded in 1968 and has competed in a variety of leagues including the Lancashire Combination, and was a founder member of the North West Counties League when the Combination merged with the Cheshire league. Unfortunately financial constraints prevented the required ground improvements to be completed, and the Club was relegated into the Manchester league Division One. The drop of two leagues resulted in the majority of the playing staff moving to other club's and for numerous years the club endeavoured to re-build. Players came and went, lacking the Club loyalty that had brought success to the Club in the 1970's and early 80's until the Committee embraced an ambitious youth development policy in 1999. The Club is now more than half way through a ten-year development plan to enhance its recreational facilities and expand the Club, in particular its junior section. seven years ago the Club had two teams, 50 members, one mediocre pitch with dilapidated clubhouse and changing rooms. Since then the Club members have worked tirelessly to progress the Club within its means, and with some help from external grant sources. Assistance from the Football foundation, Awards for All programme, and Wigan Council enabled a series of improvements to be completed. The main pitch was re-drained, a second pitch acquired/improved, new changing rooms and Clubhouse built, disabled access provided and other improvements made to the grounds. More recently the ground was brought up to the necessary Ground Grading for re-entry into the NWCFL, in time for the start of the 2006/7 season. The work paid off and the application for rejoining the league was accepted. The 2007/2008 season also saw a further progression of the Club, onto the national stage, having been accepted in the FA Vase competition. The plan was then to follow this up with an application to the FA for admission to the FA Cup in the 2008/2009 season and this term the club played their first FA Cup tie sadly ending in a 2-0 defeat. Other plans include improvements to the access road, new junior changing rooms, and additional playing fields for the junior section and a proposed girls/Ladies section. The main ground is also scheduled for enhancement works with additional covered spectator areas The Club is a voluntary organisation run by a Committee of 15 alongside approximately 25 coaches and managers. . . . Ashton Athletic The Club now has a total membership of more than 400. We have 10 junior teams consisting of approximately 170 children who take advantage of the improvement of our now excellent facilities, whilst hundreds of children and adults from opposition teams also benefit from the continually improving facilities. The Club is keen to maintain the pace of development of the club and future plans will enable increased activity at the Club, additional Junior teams and a much safer and secure environment in particular for the Children. The Club is also committed and positively working towards an application to the FA for Charter Standard, and an intensive Coach Education Programme is well under way. 2007/8 saw the club finish a creditable third in the Second Division and secure promotion it also saw the clubs debut in the FA Vase which proved very lucrative for the Club, progressing through 3 stages and beating 2 teams from higher leagues in the process. The 2008/2009 season was one of further progression for the Club, having been promoted to the Premier Division of the Vodkat North West Counties League. Athletic took a step up onto the national stage, having been accepted in the FA Cup competition. They had a great first season in the top flight finishing in 6th position exceeding many seasoned commentators expectations. The season also saw cup success as they retained the Atherton Charity Cup at the end of the season.

Last term was one of problems for the club as they battled at the wrong end of the table for the majority of the season and they did not manage to get out of the relegation zone finishing 21st just above Challenge Cup winners Abbey Hey. A late reprieve was gratefully accepted by the club as following the demise and withdrawal of Nelson FC at the 11th hour the club were reinstated to the Premier Division for this season. It has been a bitter sweet experience for the club as after setting up for a season in Division One they have struggled to adapt to the higher level and are battling at the wrong end of the table again this season. Match Report Saturday 12th February 2011 Vodkat League, Premier Division Barnoldswick Town 3-0 St Helens Town St Helens Town fell to defeat against Barnoldswick on a pudding bowl of a pitch at Victoria Park this afternoon. The early stages saw the visitors struggle to adapt to the conditions defending the wetter end of the pitch with the surface being very soft and moveable under foot making it difficult to turn. An early free kick from the hosts saw Michael Morrison strike a curling effort off the crossbar and the loose ball was smuggled clear. St Helens responded with Daley Woods sending a right wing free kick into the area the ball was cleared to James Croxton on the edge of the box and his shot was blocked. Moments later Woods sent a cross in from the same flank and home stopper Billy Carrington got lucky as he claimed the ball at the 2nd attempt with Iain Dyson loitering with intent. The opening goal of the contest came a direct result of the conditions. A quick counter attack by the hosts after a stroke of fortune on the edge of their own box saw Jack Overson send a long ball from box to box the ball bounced and died on the sodden surface when in a similar position at the other end of the park the ball wound have carried to the keeper. Morrison’s initial effort was well saved by Dale Newbrook but the loose ball fell kindly for Aaron Hollindrake to fire home. Croxton threatened down the left for St Helens when he cut inside and unleashed a shot which Carrington again failed to hold but claimed at the loose ball before a visitor could get to it. Matters got worse for the visitors just half the half hour mark when Morrison, who appeared to be backing in to his marker chested the ball into the path of Adam Hayton who struck a fantastic effort into the top right hand corner of the net from the left edge of the area. There was further incident before the interval when Robbie Smith latched onto a through ball and found himself one on one with Newbrook and the St Helens keeper pulled off a fantastic save to avert the danger. Just before half time the ball was played toward Liam Pearson in the penalty area and as he attempted to control it on his chest he was pushed in the back and the referee deemed it to be a free kick to the hosts. The second half started well from St Helens with Pearson finding Woods who shot just over the bar and Pearson himself having a turn and shot held by the goalkeeper. On 52 minutes the visitors threatened again when Chris McGann latched onto a through ball and as he was about to fire home Carrington came from his goal and took him down with a rash two footed challenge. Mr Beverley had no option but to point to the spot and we all waited for the expected red card but to no avail as the keeper never even received a caution. To cap St Helens dismay Pearson stepped up and fired the ball to the keepers right and he guessed the right way to save the spot kick. Further pressure from the visitors saw Woods turn and shot from the left sail over the crossbar and a corner cleared to the edge of the area where Karl Aldridge returned it goalwards but wide of the target. Substitute Mike Kavanagh had a great chance to halve the deficit with ten minutes remaining as the ball broke to him on the right of the area but he could not steer his left footed effort on target. To rub salt in the visitors wounds Barnoldswick netted a third goal late in the contest when Hollindrake found Smith who made use of the space he was afforded to slot home past Newbrook and send the hosts into 5th position in the Premier Division table. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town AFC – A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

A Brief History Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. Ninth place was achieved in 2009/10 but Bickerstaffe stepped down at the end of the season and Lee Riley was promoted to manager, with Phil Burton (ex-Prescot Cables) as his assistant. A number of new faces have joined the club, most significantly striker Liam Pearson and goalkeeper Dale Newbrook and this combination of youth and experience is looking to improve on last season’s progress. The Knowsley Road ground was vacated in August 2010, prior to its demolition, necessitating a temporary move to share Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street facilities, but Autumn 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club. Town Managers 1946 - Present Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. Ex-local boxer George ‘Bold’ Thomas, trainer on matchday bench. 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10
Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his sone in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Having previously been the manager of highly successful local league side ’Furnacemen’s Arms FC’ Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005 after defeat at Ramsbottom United meant Town title challenge was ended. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However, the club decided it could not wait for a repeat and an upsurge in results as the final few weeks of the 2008-09 season unfolded and Town remained rooted in a relegation spot. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games of the season. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 with early success in the FA Cup and a League Cup semi-final spot and the thoughts of relegation put aside very early in the campaign, eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – Present Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10.

League News League Takes Firm Stance On Late Payments Over the past few months, the League Management Committee has become increasingly concerned at the number of instances involving clubs missing deadlines for paying outstanding monies owed to the League in relation to fines and fees. Last week, the Committee were forced to set a final deadline for one club, who despite several warnings, had consistently failed to respond to requests for payment of outstanding invoices. The club in question narrowly avoided having fixtures withdrawn, with payment of the money owed being made only 15 minutes before a final deadline set by the League. League Secretary John Deal says that the League will take a tough line in the event that further occurrences of late payments arise. The League Management Committee is committed to ensuring that any member club must not be able to gain an advantage by delaying payments of fines and fees due. Even if the amount owed is fairly small, it is none the less unacceptable that while the majority of clubs consistently meet the deadlines for payments due, there are a small number of offenders who do not. "In this recent instance, the club in question has been made fully aware that no further instances of defaulting on payments will be tolerated, and the Management Committee is determined that a firm policy must now be taken on late payments. We are all fully aware that the current economic climate, coupled with the bad weather we have had this winter, has presented difficulties for clubs in terms in cashflow. However, it is the duty of the League Management Committee to ensure that all clubs are treated with equal fairness, and we will have no hesitation in taking action against any club that refuses to adhere to the rules regarding payment of fines and fees. "If a club fails to meet a League deadline for payment, they will have their fixtures withdrawn, and will also be responsible for any expenses incurred by future opponents in the event a fixture is cancelled at short notice. The club may also be subject to further financial penalties and dismissal from the League.

Vodkat League News Irlam Embrace Respect Campaign Following the League Management Committee's decision to implement the FA's Respect campaign within the League, Irlam have embraced the initiative and implemented their own ideas on how to employ the principles of the campaign on match days. When Irlam played host to Ashton Town last Saturday, the pre-match build up was marked with a few subtle differences to the normal routine, and Club Secretary Warren Dodd explained the reasons for the changes. "We attended the recent meeting at Lancashire FA with Eddie Wolstenholme (Referee Development Manager), where all Clubs were in attendance to listen to a talk on the Respect campaign. Many of the points in the meeting were delivered in a no nonsense style on the night, and it pretty much dawned on us all how important the campaign is. As a result we did a number of things on our match day at the weekend which in the past we have not done, and we feel they did a lot of good. "Firstly, we received two Respect pop up banners from our County FA and placed them prominently in the space that separates the two dugouts. When the match officials arrived, we spoke to them and asked if they would like to speak to the managers and captains of both teams before the match. "This was well received and went ahead, with all parties making contact before the game. This was then followed by the Respect handshake before the game. The game itself was an excellent sporting contest from start to finish, with just two cautions in the game, one of them as a result of bringing a player down for a penalty. After the match, I spoke with the officials about the game, with match official Jonathan Broadhurst remarking that both sides were 'a credit to the league'. "From our point of view, the day was a great success. We have not had a great season so far disciplinary wise, but we have relayed the Respect campaign to the players, and they also seem to see that it is the only way forward. We at Irlam definitely need to be seen as a Club that actively promotes the Respect campaign."

Vodkat League News . . . Atherton LR's 10-4 win over Formby last weekend has prompted a number of enquiries, all asking what the highest score is for a competitive game played in the NWCFL. As ever, League Statistician Paul Cowburn has all the information at his fingertips, and while Saturday's game didn't create a league record, Paul can confirm it was only the fifth time that 14 goals have been scored in a game since the League began in 1982. So which team holds the record for the most number of goals in a game? You have to go back to the 5th May 1997 when Tetley Walker beat Nelson 15-2 in a Division Two encounter. That game also holds the record for the most goals scored in a game. Nelson were also on the wrong end of the highest winning margin in a game, on the 28th January 2006 when they lost 14-0 to Cammell Laird in a Second Round tie in the League Challenge Cup. For highest scoring closest encounters, two games hold the record. On the 6th February 1993, Westhoughton Town (aka Daisy Hill) beat Burnley Bank Hall 7-6, while more recently on the 15th March 2004 Great Harwood Town lost 7-6 at home to Holker Old Boys. Mention should also be made of a game at Surrey Street on the 15th November 1994, when Glossop North End beat Castleton Gabriels 8-5 in a League Challenge Cup Second Round replay. The Story So Far . . . We have reached that stage again where it is a time to reflect upon the progress made so far. Lee Riley and assistant Phil Burton took over the reins at the start of the season, following on from the achievements of Gary Bickerstaffe. Last season’s finishing position of 9th in the table is still very much within reach and progress has once again been made in the cup competitions. League form has been rather up and down so far. A disappointing start at Alsager was remedied with an excellent win at promotion-chasing Winsford before the FA Cup campaign began. Nostell Miners Welfare were a tough nut to crack, home and away before old foes Glossop prevailed narrowly after extra-time in another replay. The early part of the season was dominated by the move away from Knowsley Road, which was due to close at the end of September. Home league losses to newly-promoted Barnoldswick (0-3) and high-flying Congleton (2-3 in a frenetic finish) were put behind us as we looked forward to the scheduled last hurrah against New Mills on 28th September. Town enthusiasts, groundhoppers and old friends alike were all looking forward to Town’s last match at Knowsley Road and a bumper crowd was anticipated before our lords and masters pulled the plug and the game had to be hastily moved to Atherton Collieries on a wet Tuesday night before a sparse crowd. Saints themselves had enjoyed at least three “last games” at Knowsley Road, yet Town’s final appearance proved, retrospectively, to be the Glossop cup-tie on 28th August. A very disappointing end to what was to have been a very happy occasion. An early season double was gained over Glossop and there was a good win at Silsden’s new ground, but disappointing defeats were suffered at Bootle and Formby. Early FA Vase home games were moved to Alder House as Brodsworth Welfare and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic were put to the sword. The home stage then transferred to Edge Green Street, courtesy of our friends and neighbours Ashton Town and the first game was the FA Vase First Round tie against Oldham Boro. This was followed by a remarkable sequence of six games in which Town netted at least three goals a game. Wins over Atherton LR and away to Padiham preceded a surreal 3-3 home draw with Maine Road, Town leading 3-0 at half-time and narrowly avoiding a last-gasp defeat. Following another three-goal haul against Flixton, Town then scored four against Formby, only to lose 5-4. There then followed a 4-2 win at Rossendale before a perverse 4-0 loss at Squires Gate, in which Town appeared on top for most of the game. The performance of the season was the 2-0 FA Vase win at Winterton Rangers, followed closely by a 3-2 Liverpool Senior Cup victory over Skelmersdale. However, that battling performance was followed by a dip in form, which led to rather flat home displays against Winsford and Stone and a 4-0 FA Vase reverse at Holbrook Sports, a game twice delayed by the early onset of winter and hastily re-arranged on a cold, unforgiving Wednesday evening far from home in December. Town’s inconsistent league form resumed in January but a lower mid-table position with nine wins, two draws and twelve defeats from 23 starts is still a fair platform from which to launch a push for a Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . A Review of the Season top eight finish in the last three months of the season: added to that the opportunity to better last seasion’s progress in the Vodkat League Cup and there is much to play for. Two significant new arrivals in the pre-season were centre forward Liam Pearson, pictured left, from Ford Motors (20 goals so far) and goalkeeper Dale Newbrook, signed after a strong performance for West Didsbury and Chorlton against Town in a July friendly. Several other new arrivals, including Paul Cliff, Liam Ryder and Dave Garnell, further strengthened the squad, as did wingman Daley Woods, who scored 9 goals in 19 games before leaving and then recently re-joining the club. On the debit side, Rob Hanley has not reappeared this season and the Mitchell brothers have departed. Marc Stephens has left for Cammell Laird and he will be looking to emulate the progress of Karl Ledsham who is now doing so well with Southport in the Blue Square Bet Premier Division. Younger players like Mike Fargher, Luke Faulkner and Mike Kavanagh have made significant progress and the squad as a whole has a stronger feel. The outlook is promising and with a little luck and the confidence of a reasonable run of good form, we could be on the brink of something big. Let’s hope so!

Around The Grounds Victoria Park - Burscough FC A free midweek and the enforced break due to the recent bad weather saw St Helens Town arrange a friendly against Evo-Stick, Premier League Burscough. Town’s last visit to the ground was in October 2003 when Skelmersdale United were tenants as they were between grounds after leaving White Moss Park and waiting for their current ground to be built. The ground itself has not changed much in the intervening years but the ground was already well equipped and not in need of major changes. When you enter through the turnstiles there is a goal immediately in front of you with hard standing all the way from the entrance to the behind the goal. Making your way around the ground to your left you pass a portacabin which serves as the club shop, ran by the supporters club. Advancing around the corner onto the left hand touchline see the snack bar and toilet facilities before you reach the main stand (pictured above) which houses the entire seated capacity of the ground amounting to 250 seats. The remainder of the touchline sees uncovered hard standing.
Advancing behind the far end goal sees a large covered terrace which helped to shelter us from the driving rain during the second half of this encounter. The remaining touchline sees another covered terrace (pictured right) which runs for about a quarter of the touchline centrally. After passing this you reach the back of “The Barons” which is a privately run club which acts as the watering hole for the supporters on a match day and has all the facilities you would expect. All in all a fine ground with plenty of cover and seating for all.

Saint’s Alive . . . Every morning a man built like a wrestler gets on the same bus and walks straight past the driver to his seat, declaring in a deep and booming voice, “Big John doesn’t pay”. Eventually, tired of being on the receiving end of such intimidation, the scrawny bus driver decides to take up weightlifting and, six months later, feels confident enough to challenge the big man. As usual, the man gets on the bus the next morning and bellows, “Big John doesn’t pay”. The bus driver grabs the man’s arm and stops him in his tracks. “And just why is that?” he demands loudly, squaring up for a fight. The man suddenly reaches into his pocket, prompting a collective intake of breath from the other passengers. “Because,” he snarls, withdrawing his hand from his pocket, “Big John has a travel pass”. On a holiday together, a group of men take in a tour of the brewery where their favourite beer is made. As they marvel at all the processes involved, one of them slips and fall into a huge, deep vat of fermenting bitter. While the brewery workers started the desperate attempts to save him, his friends are ushered outside. Half an hour later, the supervisor comes out to tell them that, despite the rescuers’ heroic efforts, their friend has drowned. “Was it a horrible death?” asks one of the victim’s friends. “Did he suffer very much?” “I don’t think so,” replies the supervisor. “In fact, he climbed out twice to go to the loo.” On his first day at work, a trainee zookeeper is given the task of feeding some of the inhabitants, starting at the shark aquarium. He arrives with his wheelbarrow full of dead fish and, as he’s throwing them in, a shark suddenly lunges out of the water at him, so he grabs his shovel from the wheelbarrow and beats the shark to death. Realising what he has done, he slings the shark into the barrow, makes his way to the lions’ enclosure, and throws it in. His next job is to feed the chimpanzees, and all is going well until three of the apes suddenly attack him. Again he defends himself with the shovel, leaving the animals battered to death, and he disposes of the bodies in the same way as before. Finally, he has to visit the apiary to tend the bees, and is attacked by a swarm from one of the hives. The shovel springs into action resulting in a pile of squashed drones, which are dumped into the lions’ enclosure, along with the other corpses. The next day, a new lion is introduced into the resident pride. “What’s the food like here?” asks the new arrival. “Usually boring,” replies a lioness. “But yesterday we had fish, chimps and mushy bees!” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
