Talk of the Town Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road, for this Vodkat League Premier Division contest against Bootle. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Bootle to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this evening after their short trip. It doesn't seem too long since I was last producing a programme for a Town match when we finished the season was an emphatic victory over Runcorn Linnets by a 5-0 score-line. I now write this article on the back on a well deserved 5-1 victory over Abbey Hey on Saturday. Goals from Chris Burke, Karl Ledsham, with his right foot!, Iain Dyson and a brace from Rob Hanley ensured Town took the three points and ended the day at the dizzy heights of 2nd place in the table. Lets not get too carried away as it is early days. This evening’s visitors also secured maximum return on Saturday with a 2-0 home victory over Silsden on their return to the top flight of our competition after an absence of some ten seasons. The last meeting between the two sides and indeed the only game to have taken place here at Knowsley Road was a Liverpool Senior Cup 1st Round Tie in October 2006 which the visitors won 3-1 after extra time. After this evening our attentions turn to Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Parkgate and seats are available on the coach leaving here at 11am. The cost is £5 for an adult and £3 concessions. To book your place have a word with a committee member this evening. The first 100+ club draw of the season will be taking place after the match this evening and the more members the higher the prize for the winner. The cost is £1 per number per week and again if you want to join seek out a member of the committee. Tonight’s game should give Town manager Gary Bickerstaffe a better idea of what his charges can achieve this season as Bootle will test the Town line-up more than Abbey Hey did on Saturday but hopefully the boys will be up for the challenge and will leave the pitch with at least a share of the spoils. From the Chairman Good evening and a very warm welcome back to Knowsley Road for the start of our home campaign in the Vodkat Premier Division. We must also welcome back tonight’s visitors Bootle after a lengthy absence from the top flight and we wish them all the best for a successful season - although not this evening! Both clubs started the season well with Town dishing out a 1-5 thrashing at Abbey Hey (our 450th NWCFL win) and Bootle running out 2-0 victors at home to Silsden. Tonight will be tough for both sides with Town boss Gary Bickerstaffe hoping home advantage will be enough to secure maximum points. It’s been a really busy summer period with the club chasing hard to secure the necessary sponsorship to ensure a much more competitive approach to the coming season. In a time of financial insecurity across the country we are indebted to a large number of ‘old’ and ‘new’ sponsors for their support. We welcome on board Denise Cunliffe and her team at Care Assured Limited, who are the club’s Main Sponsors for 2009-10. In Town Today . . . The original Bootle Football Club was formed in 1880 and played at Hawthorne Road. In the season 1889/90, the club became a founder member of the Football Alliance and managed to reach the quarterfinals of the FA Cup, where they lost to Blackburn Rovers. When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite finishing a respectable 8th place, the club dropped out of he league after one season, were replaced by neighbours Liverpool FC and seemingly, disappeared. Football returned to Hawthorne Road when a new club, Bootle Athletic F.C. was formed. The team played in the Liverpool Leagues and, in 1948, were elected to the Lancashire Combination League Division 2 which they won at their first attempt. However, they struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons, withdrew and folded during the 1953/54 campaign. The current Bootle side were formed in 1953 as Langton FC, the side played at Edinburgh Park and dominated amateur football in the Liverpool area as members of the Liverpool Shipping League and subsequently the Liverpool County Combination until the mid seventies. The club was massively successful winning the County Combination on nine occasions, The Liverpool Challenge Cup three times, the Liverpool Amateur Cup three times and the George Mahon Cup six times. The club made the move to The Lancashire Combination in 1974 and finished a creditable third in their inaugural season. They followed this success but winning back to back championship in 1976 and 1977. Their final season in the Lancashire Combination saw them finish third again. In 1978 Bootle moved to Bucks Park the club joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which they won in their first season, and were promoted to the First Division. The “Bucks� spent three season in the First Division before in 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division. The club spent the next ten season as a member of the First Division until disaster struck in 1992 and they were relegated to the Second Division. . . . Bootle FC rightful pace in the top fight of the North West Counties League. In their first season back they finished in a creditable sixth place and won their first silverware for 15 years when winning the League’s Floodlit Trophy. With the onset of money entering into the equation on an even greater scale Bootle found it hard to survive and with the loss of some key personnel, were unfortunately, merely delaying the inevitable for couple of seasons until they were finally relegated into the Second Division after a four year stay, the team had finished the season in 12th place but were relegated after failing a ground grading. Bootle bounced back again at the first time of asking as they gained from Chadderton, Warrington Town and Darwen failing their ground grading and after a 7th placed finish were promoted. Their stay lasted just two season’s and after struggling in both terms they were relegated. Another two seasons passed before they were to be relegated again on ground grading and after the loss of Bucks Park they returned to the Liverpool County Combination. A long and arduous trek then ensued to find a new home, whilst at the same time trying to keep the team functioning. Fifth & third place finishes whilst at the Dockers Club was promising and after a lot of hard work the club found themselves elected back in the North West Counties League in 2006. With the club now play housed at “New Bucks Park” in Vesty Road, Bootle. The first season back in the North West Counties League was one of consolidation and the team finished 10th in the 18 team division. They also re-entered the FA Vase for the first time in seven years but exited at the hands of Salford City. The 2007/8 season saw the club advance on all fronts with the club entering the FA Cup, again falling at the first hurdle in Manchester this time at Flixton. A run to the FA Vase 2nd round saw Bootle account for Padiham and AFC Emley before Winterton Rangers proved too strong for the Merseysiders. The cup runs continued as Bootle were runners up in both the Division 2 Trophy and the League Challenge Cup. In 2008/9 Bootle were crowned champions of the Division 1, beating Padiham in second place but seven points. An excellent FA Vase run saw them advance to the fourth round before being defeated by eventual winners Whitley Bay.

Vodkat League News Charity Match at Ashton Town Ashton Town AFC plays host to a star-studded charity football match on Wednesday 12th August as a team of ex-professionals including Stuart Barlow and Tony Kelly line up to take on a Hollyoaks XI in aid of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, Tesco Charity of the Year 2009. Ex-Premier League footballers Stuart Barlow (Everton) and Tony Kelly (Bolton and Wigan) will be turning out in this special charity match against a Hollyoaks team featuring stars including Nick Pickard (Tony) and Ricky Whittle (Calvin). X Factor star Laura White will start the match and present the winning trophy to the victorious captain. Tickets are still available for the match and can be bought at the ground on the night, with all profits going to the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign’s Tesco Charity of the Year 2009 partnership. This appeal aims to raise £3 million to provide vital, specialist equipment, such as electric page turners, mobile arm supports or powered wheelchairs, for hundreds of children living with muscular dystrophy across the UK through the “Giving children equipment to be independent” campaign. Muscular dystrophy is a devastating, incurable and life-limiting condition that causes muscles to waste away, making children progressively weaker and preventing them from performing simple tasks that we take for granted, such as turning the pages of a book or brushing their hair. Hollyoaks star Nick Pickard said: “All the boys are really looking forward to pulling our boots on and getting out on the pitch to raise as much money as we can for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. It’s a fantastic cause and should be a fantastic match so I hope we manage to fill the ground with fans!” The game kicks off at 8 pm on Wednesday 12th August. Around The Grounds Globe Way – Buckley Town I don’t think anybody who attended St Helens Town’s preseason friendly match against Buckley Town earlier this season would have anything bad to say about the facility at Globe Way in Buckley. Well, with the possible exception of there not being a bar facility there. Walking through the makeshift turnstile and turning right you are presented with the ground, and a stunning facility it appears to be. The players changing rooms, toilet facilities, refreshment and official’s room are all situated at the top end of the ground with the players having to walk down steps to get to the pitch. But it’s a walkway with a fuchsia bush on either side of it which is always a strange and attractive feature of a football stadium. If in the ground and you are not a vegetarian, it’s absolutely imperative that you try one of the cheeseburgers from the canteen, top quality football food and far better than the standard football pie. The actual pitch itself is kept superbly well maintained and three sides of it allow a covered area to watch the match. Small covered seating stands are present down both touchlines and behind the goal at the top end, with the area behind the other goal being open standing. Should the match you are watching be dull, the right hand touchline side as you look from the top end offers a spectacular view of the local area. Of the few downsides this ground has, the toilet facilities are slightly compact and could easily see a queue form if there was a sudden mass requirement for them. There is also a spot from the car park that you could actually see the game through the fence if you fancy saving yourself the admission price. On the whole though it’s a superb little ground that would put many of those in the North West Counties League to shame, well worth a visit if you are ever in the area. Overall score: 7/10

St Helens Town AFC . . . Re-formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

. . . A Brief History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-ofWar Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Introduction to the . . . Graeme McCall: Keeper in his second spell at the club after rejoining in the close season. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keeper’s jersey. Kevin Woods: Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones: Commanding centre half now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke: Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Rob Hanley: Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Iain Dyson: Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club’s top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond, had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell: Brother of Graeme, followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Adam Gilchrist: Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield. Marc Stephens: Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Dougie Pitts: Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere.

St. Helens Town squad Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen ‘Ben’ Kay: Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Nick McLoughlin: Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Paul Monteith: Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Peter Birch: Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possesses good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces. Luke Faulkner: Seventeen year old central defender who has recently joined the club from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Lee Riley: Joined the club last season as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables. Gary Bickerstaffe: Rejoined the club late last season as manager having had a previous spell as a player in the 1990s. His arrival last term ensured we staved off relegation comfortably with eight wins from our last 11 league encounters. A mid-field dynamo at the height of his playing career Gary has graced a number of clubs including Congleton Town, Winsford United and Bangor City and has been assistant Manager at both Warrington Town and Congleton and Manager at Garswood United. Other squad players include prolific strikers David Burns and Jamie Foster along with Andy Gillespie and Danny Clarke who have all stepped up from St Helens Town Reserve team football so far this season.

Fan’s Eye View Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road for this evenings Vodkat League, Premier Division match against Bootle. May the travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result. So here we are once again, back under the Knowsley Road lights for Premier Division football as a new season gets underway. Full of possibilities, hope and optimism that always seems to lie within football fans at this time of year, though has often disappeared by the end of September. But the optimism and encouraging signs are still present at the moment after Town opened their account in the league campaign last Saturday. I turned up at the Abbey Stadium with no expectations of results, it’s always an uncertain time of year as although you know how well your own team has developed over the offseason, I hadn’t got the first clue if Abbey Hey had strengthened themselves or not and whether their lowly league position from last season would still be an accurate reflection of their abilities this term. But come the full time whistle I was certainly smiling as goals from Chris Burke (of all people), another belter from Karl Ledsham, Iain Dyson from the penalty spot and two from the ever more impressive Rob Hanley gave Town a 5-1 victory and a perfect start to the campaign. Tonight we welcome newly promoted and I suppose you could argue local rivals Bootle to Knowsley Road, who themselves made a great start to life in the Premier Division with a 2-0 victory over Silsden. Having seen Bootle play three times last season, Town are going to have to be at their absolute best to get anything out of this match. They are a team that will clinically punish any error (as Irlam found out), a well drilled and organised side (as the now folded Darwen found out) and can turn it on when its needed in the crunch matches (as AFC Liverpool found out). Town have to make sure that they carry forward their momentum from the match on Saturday and have a positive and determined game. Local rivalry at stake? Yes I suppose there is, but it’s not exactly going to tip the poles of emotion tonight. If Town win I’ll be happy of course but not particularly ecstatic, if Town lose I’ll be disappointed but not devastated. I can’t look past Prescot Cables for the ultimate rivalry match where losing is devastating and winning leaves you on a high for about a week (I’m going to take every possible opportunity to make mention of that match, make no mistake about it, ha-ha). But tonight holds good promise for a great match and here’s hoping everybody has an enjoyable time watching St Helens Town play football. Town News A legend returns The summer break has seen the return of a legend to the St Helens Town ranks. It’s been almost a decade since prolific striker Steve Pennington last pulled on a Town shirt and on that occasion, in May 2000, he fittingly scored the goal in a 1-0 victory against champions elect Vauxhall GM in what was to be the club’s final encounter at their former Hoghton Road home. ‘Pellet’, well-known both locally and across the region for his natural goal scoring ability, has rejoined Town in a coaching and player development role. His debut goal for the club came on Tuesday 28 August 1992 as a substitute for Mick Holgate’s side - an 86th minute ‘tap-in’ winner at the Moss End against Skelmersdale United. Steve went on to regularly top the club’s and the North West Counties Football League goal scoring charts during the 1990s and he became a hero to the Town faithful during his tenure. On his ‘retirement’ Steve’s remarkable goal scoring achievements for the club earned him entry into the St. Helens Town ‘Hall of Fame’ as the club’s player of the 1990s joining the likes of Bert Trautmann (1940s), Harry McCann (1950s), Jackie Atherton (1960s), Alan Wellens (1970s) and Phil Layhe (1980s). ‘Pellet’ spent the vast majority of his career with Town, despite a brief flirtation with Trafford in the Unibond League and a short spell with Altrincham in the middle of the 1993-94 season when the Conference outfit took him to Moss Lane following 28 goals in the opening three months of the season. His return to Hoghton Road a few weeks later saw him complete the season with 45 goals matching Phil Stainton’s 1965 haul but narrowly missing out on Jackie Kendrick’s 46 goal record from the club’s 1974 Lancashire Combination campaign. Steve finished his semi-professional career at Town before going on to take up a coaching role at Warrington Town alongside former strike partner Glenn Walker. In more recent times ‘Pellet’ has reverted to management of local football and has been at the helm of a highly successful Boilermaker’s Arms FC outfit who last year gained promotion to the St. Helens Combination top flight. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘It’s a delight to have ‘Pellet’ back at the club and his enthusiasm for the game is no different now to those times at Hoghton Road when he was knocking goals in for fun against quality sides.’ He added, ‘He’s the club’s all-time leading goal scorer and that gives him legendary status at a club that’s had some fantastic players during its 63 year history. It’s unlikely the immediate future will see his all-time leading goal scoring record challenged. The club will no-doubt benefit from his experience and character.’ Town boss Gary Bickerstaffe said, ‘I have played alongside ‘Pellet’ and know him extremely well from our days at Hoghton Road. Vodkat League News New Signing For Bacup Borough Bacup Borough have secured the services of former Manchester City Youth Team goalkeeper Ashley Timms. Twenty three year old Timms, whose previous clubs include Norwich City, Cambridge United, & Oldham Athletic, made his debut for Bacup in their two goal victory against Fleetwood Hesketh at the end of July. Bacup Borough is Ashley Timms’ first club since serving a prison sentence for blackmailing an un-named Premiership Star. Manager Brent Peters said: “I am highly delighted to have secured the services of Ashley Timms. Ashley is a top quality goalkeeper who unfortunately made a mistake in his life and for that mistake he did pay the price. “Bacup Borough Football Club have teamed up with Pro Vision Academy, a second chance Academy for players who have been in the professional game but have been released, and Ashley Timms comes into this bracket. “Ashley made a mistake, he has paid for it, his past is his past, and it is important now that we all look to the future. I am confident the lad will become a top quality Football League keeper with the help and guidance of my staff and myself at Bacup Borough Football Club, and the Pro Vision Net Work. “This is Ashley’s platform to perform and hopefully it will secure him a full time professional contract back in the Football League”.

St Helens Town Juniors . . . The future’s bright for Town Established just three years ago, and now an FA Charter Standard Club, the ‘Town Juniors’ has grown into one of the largest junior outfits in the region. With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Burnley, Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players. The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team (pictured above) under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. Match Report Saturday 8th August; Vodkat League Premier Division Abbey Hey 1-5 St Helens Town St Helens Town started the season off in emphatic style with a comfortable victory over Abbey Hey on a sunny afternoon in Manchester. The visitors created the first chance of the match on five minutes when Karl Ledsham broke forward down the right wing and cut into the box and he got a lucky break off the defender before curling a left footed shot just wide of the left hand upright. The hosts almost took the lead when Mike Brown sent a left wing free kick into the box and found Daniel Doherty unmarked but his header struck the crossbar with Graeme McCall beaten and went harmlessly behind for a goal kick. Town then dominated possession and created numerous chances. Iain Dyson was found by a John Elias cross and he beat a defender before unleashing a shot that broke off the keepers legs and was cleared off the line by Grant McElroy. Further chances fell to Dyson and Mark Evans who shot over and were denied by keeper Jones’ legs respectively. Town spurned more chances when Evans shot over the bar from 20 yards and a great passing move saw Ledsham shot over. The visitors were almost made to pay for their wastefulness when Doherty did well to pull a ball back towards Ottis Thomas but the striker was leaning backwards and could only turn the ball over the bar. Town broke the Abbey Hey resistance with a double salvo before the break. A right wing corner from Evans evaded the collected players at the front post and found its way to Chris Burke who stooped to head it home. Rob Hanley and Ledsham linked for the second goal as the former flicked on for the latter to beat his defender and rifle a right footed effort into the net from just inside the box. A quick start to the second half saw Town put the result beyond doubt by the hour mark. After Mike Faragher and Hanley had spurned good chances, Ledsham returned the favour from the end of the first half by flicking on a goal kick to Hanley who beat a defender and slotted home. On 58 minutes a slick turn my Ledsham saw him fouled by McElroy and Mr Salisbury pointed to the spot. Skipper Dyson stepped up and slotted the penalty to the keepers right and the stopper went the right way but could not keep the strike out. The visitors then took their foot off the gas with the game in the bag and Abbey Hey pulled a goal back on 76 minutes when Wayne Welbeck cut inside from the right and shot past McCall from 16 yards. In the closing stages Dyson linked with Ledsham with the skipper thundering a shot off the base of the post and behind for a goal kick. As the game entered added on time Town added a fifth. Man of the match Ledsham advanced down the left wing and cut into the box before beating a defender and squaring towards Hanley the cross deflected off the defender and goalkeeper before Hanley poked the loose ball home to crown an excellent debut. So Town go into Tuesday’s home match against Bootle in a lofty second position but will be in for a more stern test of their credentials at the hands of their neighbours. Reed Looking For A Better Start It was never going to be a very busy pre-season in terms of transfers for Buxton manager John Reed with 10 of last season’s squad already committed for the new campaign (including young midfielder Neil Stevens, who was on loan from Farsley) plus another 3 promising to return. This followed a strong end to the 2008/09 season when ‘the Bucks’ managed to find some consistency both in terms of results and team selection, that had been sadly missing for the first half of campaign, and, of course, the Derbyshire Senior Cup was won for the first time in 22 years. Three contract players were released, in the shape of Terry Bowker, James Turley and Steve Brodie (who has recently re-signed for Witton Albion) and their places have gone in the squad to three players returning to the Silverlands. Sam Liversidge is a centre-half released in the summer from Sheffield Wednesday who had a successful period on loan with ‘the Bucks’ last term. Kieran Lugsden is a local player who has re-signed for Buxton after a season at Witton Albion and Jon Froggatt returns for a third time to the club following his release from Boston United. All three have faired well in pre-season, despite bad weather unfortunately meaning the postponement of two matches, and they have been joined by two very cosmopolitan players in the squad this summer. ‘Indy’ Aujla has signed for ‘the Bucks’ following spending a year in the States on a footballing scholarship. He has previously played for Bradford City and Chester City and had trials in India. Kyle Collins is a flying winger who came through the ranks at Nottingham Forest and is a current St Kitts and Nevis international. John Reed will be looking for a better start to the campaign than last season when injuries and suspensions hampered ‘the Bucks’ but confidence is running high that keeping a settled squad will pay dividends at the start of this term.

All Our Yesterdays The First St. Helens Town 1901-1923: The Lancashire Combination Years The current St. Helens Town Football Club is the second to bear the name. The first was formed in 1901, initially to rival the St. Helens Recreation club, which had only a few years earlier changed from rugby to football, under the patronage of the glass company, Pilkington Brothers. The first meeting between the clubs took place before a crowd of over 5000 at Pilkingtons’ ground at City Road in February 1902 and resulted in a 2-2 draw. Based at the Primrose Ground in Park Road (subsequently a dog track behind the Primrose Vaults and now the site of Mulcrow Close), Town entered the Lancashire League Second Division in 1901-02, alongside Barrow, Workington, Haydock, Earlestown, Prescot and Chorley and on the formation of the new Second Division to the Lancashire Combination in 1903, St. Helens Town joined and gained promotion at the first attempt. The following season’s fixtures in the Lancashire Combination First Division included the Reserve sides of Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Bolton, Bury and Preston North End. Although relegated later that season, Town bounced back to their former status in 1909 and, in between times, helped out the Recs, sharing their Park Road facilities whilst the City Road ground was re-built. St. Helens Town had ambitions to join the Football League and an application was made to join the new Third Division 1911, but this was unsuccessful. The senior clubs’ reserve sides set up the Central League in 1912/13 and Town became one of the leading lights in the revamped Lancashire Combination. At the end of that campaign, Recs. resigned and reverted to the handling code, joining the Northern Union (later the Rugby League) as a professional club, rivalling the Saints for success throughout the 1920s. This all-consuming local rivalry was one of the reasons for the failure of St. Helens Town and the club disbanded in 1923. Famous players for the first Town club included Oliver Ellaby, father of Alf, who went on to great deeds with Saints and Wigan, Jack Bamber (Liverpool) and Albert Fairclough (Manchester City, Bristol City and Derby County). Town’s final year in the Lancashire Combination was 1913/14. The programme for the Chester v St. Helens Town game in the Lancashire Combination on 13th September 1913 referred to the reverse fixture the previous week, which Town won 2-1. The editor said: “The St. Helens ground is not one of the best, the surface being very uneven and against accurate footwork. St. Helens Town have a very

All Our Yesterdays strong side and, if their Saturday’s form is kept up, other teams will go the same way home from there.” For the record, Town were represented by: Talbott, Hall, Kelly, Platt, Hosker, Hunter, Ryder, Kelly, Jones, Benyon and Barton. Before the start of the following season, the Great War began and Town dropped out of the Lancashire Combination. The League was suspended for the duration of the War and only a handful of teams competed in much-reduced regional competitions. One such team was St. Helens Association which took part in a five-club league in Season 1917/18. No mention is made of that club, either before or after that one season. After the first club’s ultimate demise in 1923, it was to take a further 23 years and another World War to revive interest in the association game, by which stage St. Helens Recs. had themselves thrown in the towel, having nearly brought about the bankruptcy of Saints during the depression of the 1930s. Three clubs managed to reach landmarks on the opening day of the new league season: Mike Douglas's 13th minute opening goal in Newcastle Town's 5-0 win over Ramsbottom United was Town's 1700th in the league. Kelvin Lugsden's 85th minute equaliser for Glossop North End at home to Ashton Athletic was the Hillmen's 1500th league goal. St Helens Town recorded their 450th league win courtesy of their 5-1 win at Abbey Hey.

Saints Alive . . . A girl comes skipping home from school one day. Mummy, Mummy,” she calls out. “We were counting today, and all the other kids in my class could only count to eight, but I counted up to twelve. See - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.” Her mother smiles. “That’s very good, dear,” she says. “Is it because I’m blonde, Mummy?” asks the girl. “Yes, it’s because you’re blonde,” replies her mother. The next day, the girl comes skipping home from school again. “Mummy, Mummy,” she calls out. “We were saying the alphabet today, and all the other kids in my class could only say it as far as ‘d’, but I said it to ‘h’. See - a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h.” Her mother smiles. “Very good, dear,” she says. “Is it because I’m blonde, Mummy?” asks the girl. “Yes, it’s because you’re blonde,” replies her mother. The next day, the girl comes skipping home from school again. “Mummy, Mummy,” she calls out. “We had a gym class today and I saw that all the other girls in my class had flat chests but I have these!” and she opens her school blouse to reveal a stunning pair of 36Cs. “Very nice, dear,” says her mother. “Is that because I’m blonde, Mummy?” asks the girl. “No, dear,” replies her mother. “It’s because you’re 25.” Looking out from his living room window, a father sees his two young sons struggling down the road pushing a large sofa and two armchairs. When they eventually reach the house he demands to know where they acquired the furniture, and they explain that a man from a few streets away had kindly donated the items for the bonfire they were building. Exasperated, the father admonishes his sons for ignoring his numerous stern warnings. “How many times have I told you?” he bellows. “You don’t take suites from strangers.” A man enters a pub by doing a spectacular double forward somersault, quickly followed by a backward somersault with a half twist, and lands elegantly on a stool at the bar. “Good Heavens!” exclaims the startled barman. “You must be some kind of gymnast.” “Well, I trained to be one at school,” the man explains, “but now I’m a circus acrobat.” He orders a pint of bitter and, while the barman is pouring it, a new customer comes in. This one does a triple forward somersault, followed by two backward somersaults with one-and-a-half twists, and lands heavily with his feet in the sink right next to the barman. “Let me guess,” says the barman at this amazing entrance. “You’re also with the circus.” “No,” says the new arrival, clambering out of the sink. “You’re bloody doormat’s loose!”
