Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Colne. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. It is a little under a week since we played Squires Gate here at Edge Green Street and for the second time this season against the same opposition we were left wondering how we managed to lose the contest. After a slow start to the first half we went a goal behind but bounced back well to level ten minutes later when Chris McGann netted his fourth goal in four games. We then went on to dominate the remainder of the first half and the vast majority of the second period but failed to turn this pressure into goals and got caught out in the final five minutes of the contest with the visitors netting twice to secure a league double over Town. This evening sees the start to a hectic run in with Town scheduled to play nine matches in the space of 25 days before the final game of the season at the home of our visitors Colne on Saturday 30th April. This schedule sees us play twice a week for the next three weeks and three times in the final week of the season with Runcorn visiting us on Easter Monday, before Alsager do likewise on the Wednesday evening before the aforementioned trip to Colne. It is going to be a long and arduous month for the squad and we will be looking to gain as many points as possible to ensure we finish as high up the table as possible. Our visitors this evening have had an excellent season but like ourselves have lost their last couple of matches including going down 4-1 at Maine Road on Saturday afternoon. So both sides will be looking to get back to winning ways this evening as we both start the final month of the season. Finally, congratulations must go to James Gardner (pictured above v Ashton Athletic) who won our March Player of the Month award for March in his first month at the club. It will be another tough contest this evening but let’s get behind the lads and hopefully cheer them on to victory.

Season 2010-11

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street, home of Ashton Town FC, for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter against our friends and rivals from Colne FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own support are treated to an entertaining encounter. Both teams arrive this evening off the back of defeats with Town losing out 1-3 here at Ashton last Tuesday when Squires Gate were the visitors. It was another occasion were the lads failed to turn possession and chances in to goals and maximum points. The visitors struck early when Taylor thundered home a free kick from the edge of the box before in-form Chris McGann equalised. The game looked to be heading towards a draw when Mayers headed home four minutes from time and then to compound the disappointment Gate struck on the break as the game entered added on time. Tonight’s visitors arrive having lost 4-1 at Maine Road on Saturday and both teams will be looking to get back on track! Town’s latest defeat means one win in eight outings and Ian Dyson and John Fletcher will be hoping to ‘steady the ship’ following the upheaval of the last few weeks. Thankfully we appear to be safe of any relegation ‘dog-fight’ but we will need to earn a few more points if we are to maintain the comfort of our mid-table position. As we enter the final month of the season which will see nine games in 25 days including four games in the final week we can reflect on our time in exile at Ashton Town. It’s been very tough financially (as with all clubs) and our gates have seen a significant dip during the season which has had a real impact on resources. As this season comes to an end we are already planning for next season and as I have said previously we are always on the look-out for new sponsors as well as old ones returning to us! We have a range of opportunities to support the club including programme advertising, match and match ball sponsorship packages, player sponsorships starting from just £25 per season. Next season should be an exciting one as we make a return to St Helens at some point during the campaign. If you’re interested in supporting the club please get in touch on 07976 059 404. On the subject of our return to St Helens, locals may be aware of the activity around the new stadium site (pictured right) which has seen a rapid erection of the steelwork over the past couple of week as well as the demolition taking place at Knowsley Road (photos elsewhere in the programme) our home for the last decade. Let’s hope we can get back to winning way this evening and please join us in the clubhouse for the usual post-match debate and our belated 100+ Club March Draw. In Town Today . . . The town of Colne was left without a major football club after the untimely demise of the highly successful Colne Dynamoes club in 1990. That side had won the NWCL, the Unibond League Division One and the Unibond League Premier Division in consecutive seasons, as well as winning the FA Vase and Lancashire Challenge Trophy within the same period. In January 1996, Colne FC was formed by a group of like-minded people under Dave Blacklock. The enthusiasts combined their strengths and knowledge of non-league football and arrangements were made for the new club to use the now vacant Holt House Stadium, used by the previous club. Colne FC applied to join the Lancashire Football Association, the North West Counties League and the East Lancashire FA. The LFA and the East Lancashire League accepted their application, but much work was needed to be done on the Holt House ground to bring it up to the standard required for the North West Counties League. After a lot of hard work by everyone at the club, the necessary work was completed in time and Colne were recommended for acceptance into the NWCL. The member clubs at the Leagues AGM approved this in June 1996. Colnes first ever competitive match was on the 17th August 1996 against Middlewich Athletic and the result ended in a 1-0 defeat. The team was managed in these early days by Keith Mason, but his side was mainly made up of players from the East Lancs League and they always found the going tough. A further 10 defeats followed until a local derby against Nelson ended 1-1, thus giving the new club their first point. Mason resigned from the club owing to work commitments and Colne’s Vice President, Ken Bracewell, stood in until a new manager could be found. The club appointed Denzil Hart. Hart’s first game in charge was a 6-0 away defeat at the hands of Ashton Town. Two games later and Colne had their first ever victory, a thumping 5-2 win over Bacup Borough. Denzil Hart’s job was always tough and although the clubs performances improved, the results were not forthcoming and the club had to apply for re-election after finishing bottom of Division Two. The clubs total of 23 points would, however, have provided safety in either the previous season or the two seasons to follow as neither of the bottom two clubs from those seasons amassed more than 22 points. It wasn’t all gloom though, and a highlight of that first season was the Reserves, managed by Mick Molloy, winning the B.E.P. Cup at Clitheroe FC’s Shawbridge ground. Having been re-elected to the NWCL for the 1997/98 season, Hart started his plans to see Colne FC become a side to be reckoned with. The performances from his young squad were excellent but the results did not follow as expected and the club finished 18th with 31 points. The clubs third season saw them finish 16th with 40 points in a very tough campaign, which saw eighth position to seventeenth position split only by ten points. The club also saw its first cup victories and reached the League Challenge Cup 2nd round, losing 1-0 at First Division Prescot Cables (who went on to appear in the final) and also the second round of the Division Two Trophy, losing 2-5 at home to Abbey Hey. The clubs fourth season was eagerly awaited but in September 2000 manager Denzil Hart left the club by mutual agreement. Player John Lister was asked to take temporary control of team affairs and club captain Gary Halton was made his assistant. A month later Lister’s appointment was made permanent. It was a difficult seven months for Lister, changes in the team and some young inexperienced players meant that despite a number of goals for Lee Colridge, the club had to settle for second from bottom. . . . Colne FC However, Lister learned lessons from that campaign and the young players gained experience. In 2001/02 Colne ended the season with their highest ever League position of 14th and it seemed the crop of local youngsters along with a few more experienced players had finally turned the fortunes of Colne FC. In the summer of 2002, James Webster took control of the club to become the youngest Chairman in the League at 24. Webster was a player at the club with plenty of experience and had a strong desire to see the current Colne side emulate the success of their predecessors It wasn’t only on the pitch that results improved as the club embarked on ground improvements with an eye to the future, ensuring that when the time came they would be able to take their place in Division One without any grading problems. 2002/03 season started well enough, but in December 2002 John Lister resigned as manager. Webster, along with player Andy Lawson took temporary charge of team affairs, during which time goalkeeper Ross Baxter won the NWCL “Safe Hands” award. Paul Lynch took over as manager and improvements in performances continued, but in August 2003 he left to take over at Rossendale United. The Colne committee responded immediately by appointing Nigel Coates as the new manager and he took Gary Rishton as his assistant. Nigel had played for the Dynamoes team, and had experience of management at near neighbours Nelson. Such was the impact of Nigel’s arrival as manager, that he immediately won the September Manager of the Month award, a feat he repeated in November and April. 2003/04 brought back the glory days to Colne with a string of successes. In the League Colne had to play catch up after successful cup runs, but ended the season ten points clear, scoring 102 goals in their 38 games. The completed the “double” by winning the Division Two Trophy 1-0 over Great Harwood Town, Added to that, Carl Howarth was the top goalscorer in the whole NWCL, whilst in April, Nigel Coates won Manager of the Month award, Scott Gizon won “Player of the Month” and Ross Baxter took the “Safe Hands” award. The season was capped by an amazing run in the FA Vase which saw them reach the semi-finals before bowing out 4-3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury. Season 2004/5 saw Colne start off well in the NWCL First Division but run out of steam and a poor run after the turn of the year saw them slide down the table to their eventual finishing position of 10th. The club again had a good run in the FA Vase going out to eventual winners Didcot Town in the 5th round. 2005/6 saw the side record their best ever finish in their short history winning 22 matches and ending the term in 9th place. Colne finished the 2006/7 season in 11th place. The however surpassed themselves during the following season when they were one of the surprise packages in Division One finishing in a club record 5th position meaning they have finished in the top half of the table in each of their four seasons in the top flight of the league. They club also unveiled plans to build a new Conference standard ground adjacent to the present Holt House Stadium. The 2008/09 season was not the best for the Holt House club and they struggled at the wrong end of the table. It took an excellent run of form in the final few months of the season to see them pull clear of the relegation zone and they finished in 18th position. The club has recognised the need to provide continuity and as such has begun a program of development, commencing with the first youth team who reached the final of the Blackburn league in 2003/04 season then becoming the reserve team competing in the NWCFL Reserve division for the last couple of years. Winning the Cup double in their first season and reaching the semi final of the Hospital Cup the following year. All the while steadily improving and at the same time providing new talent for the first team to harvest. Season 2009/10 started slowly with the team languishing 5th bottom of the Vodkat league at Xmas. However an amazing run of one league defeat in 2010 saw the Reds climb to finish a respectable 8th in the league with a very youthful squad. Manager Nigel Coates will be hoping to build on this for season 2010/11 . Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Match Report Wednesday 30th March 2011 Vodkat League, Premier Division St Helens Town 1-3 Squires Gate 0-1; Nigel Taylor 6 Minutes, 1-1; Chris McGann 16 Minutes, 1-2; Ken Mayers 85 Minutes, 1-3; Scott Harries 90+1 Minutes. There was a scent of déjà vu around Edge Green Street as Town dominated for long spells against Squires Gate for the second time this term but fell to a second reverse in their league meetings. The hosts were again slow starters and an early free kick saw the visitors take the lead. Centre back Nigel Taylor struck a powerful left footed effort from the left hand of the “D” on the edge of the area and found the top right hand corner giving Town skipper Dale Newbrook no chance. Gate took the game to Town and looked to double their lead Joe Shelmerdine cut inside from the right wing and unleashed an effort that went just over the crossbar. The same player also created another chance moments later when he got into the box far too easily but this time Newbrook was able to avert the danger saving well at his feet. At the other end Town levelled from a quickly taken, short corner. James Gardner quickly found Karl Aldridge who whipped in a vicious first time cross which Franny Foy challenged Neil Beesley for and the stopper was unable to clear the ball and Chris McGann made no mistake as he powered a well controlled effort into the roof of the net to take his tally to four in four matches. The tide appeared to have turned as the hosts became more confident and took the game to their visitors. Gardner went on an excellent run down the left leaving defenders trailing in his wake he got to the byline and whipped a cross towards the edge of the box where Foy tried his luck but his snatched his effort wide of the target. The next chance fell to McGann who got into the box but could only steer his effort wide of the right hand upright. At the other end Taylor tried his luck with another free kick this time from 30 yards and Newbrook had to be alert to tip the effort over the bar. Newbrook was again called into action to save a long range effort from Andy Richards and just before the interval the Town stopper made an excellent close range save from Gareth Lewis after Andy Harvies had turned a lost cause into a chance. The hosts dominated the second period and created some early chances. Gardner again did well on the right and beat his marker before centring towards Mike Parr who dummied the cross to McGann who turned in a tight space before firing off a save which Beesley pushed around the post for a corner. Just after the hour McGann was again in the action as he turned on Foy’s effort from the edge of the box on the penalty spot by Beesley managed to hold his effort. Against the run of play Gate almost took the lead a swift counter attack saw Harvies attack down the right and getting into the box before drawing the keeper and squaring to team mate Shelmerdine on the far post but he somehow contrived to miss an open goal. Despite having plenty of possession Town were made to pay for not converting them into goals when as the game entered its final stages they were caught out at set piece. A poorly delivered left wing corner bounced around into the six yard box before it skipped up to Ken Mayers who headed the ball home. To rub salt in the wounds Gate added a third in added on time when another counter attack saw Harries advance on the left getting into the box his effort from 10 yards out was blocked by Karl Aldridge’s sliding challenge but broke off the defender and then the striker before looping home over the committed keeper. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town AFC – A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . A Brief History Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. Ninth place was achieved in 2009/10 but Bickerstaffe stepped down at the end of the season and Lee Riley was promoted to manager, with Phil Burton (ex-Prescot Cables) as his assistant. A number of new faces have joined the club, most significantly striker Liam Pearson and goalkeeper Dale Newbrook and this combination of youth and experience is looking to improve on last season’s progress. The Knowsley Road ground was vacated in August 2010, prior to its demolition, necessitating a temporary move to share Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street facilities, but Autumn 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club. Town Managers 1946 - Present Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. Ex-local boxer George ‘Bold’ Thomas, trainer on matchday bench. 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his sone in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Having previously been the manager of highly successful local league side ’Furnacemen’s Arms FC’ Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004.

League News The Manager Of The Month awards for March 2011 have been announced. PREMIER DIVISION ALLY PICKERING OF NEW MILLS

2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However, the club decided it could not wait for a repeat and an upsurge in results as the final few weeks of the 2008-09 season unfolded and Town remained rooted in a relegation spot. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games of the season. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10, eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigns in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson takes over the managerial reigns. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information. St Helens Town News . . . Toyota Helping Town’s Drive for Success St Helens Town Football Club is delighted to announce that Johnsons Toyota Liverpool will become the club’s main sponsor for the forthcoming season and this will see the company’s Toyota brand emblazoned on the new Town kit throughout 2010-11. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘I am delighted that we’ve been able to develop our partnership with Johnsons and this builds upon the great support they offered St Helens Town throughout last season’. Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, the Bootle based car dealership, were initially the club’s Executive Programme Sponsors for season 2009-10 and extended their support courtesy of a number of match and match ball sponsorships along with the provision of a branded car which formed part of the club’s Player of the Month awards. Johnsons were also extremely generous in their support of Town’s Bert Trautmann anniversary celebrations in November 2009. John McKiernan said, ‘We worked extremely hard to generate a huge amount of sponsorship last season and gave considerable coverage to a large number of new sponsors via our printed and online matchday programmes, club website and matchday activities. We are hopeful that last year’s efforts will provide a firm foundation for future seasons. “Johnsons Toyota Liverpool have given the club a record breaking financial boost during tough economic times and we feel that it is in part a recognition that St Helens Town can play a leading role in promoting their brand across the North West.’ He added, ‘Johnsons will be undertaking a number of promotional events and product placement activities across St Helens during the coming year and St Helens Town will be prominent throughout these. It’s a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of the club prior to our arrival at the new stadium in August 2011!’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons Toyota Liverpool said, ‘Our work with St Helens Town last season proved an ideal opportunity to expand our brand across Merseyside and we are looking forward to developing and extending our partnership so that both ourselves and the club will continue to see significant benefits’. He added, ‘We have some exciting plans for the coming season which will raise the club’s profile along with additional sponsorship monies.’ Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Vodkat League News Ben Steps Down at Barnoldswick Ben Hall, one of Barnoldswick Town’s joint management trio, has announced he is taking a break from managerial duties at the club. Ben joined forces with fellow joint-managers Stewart Airdrie and Kevin Richardson two years ago, while the club were still in the West Lancashire League, and since then the trio have overseen the team achieve promotion in their inaugural season in the Vodkat League, followed by a successful campaign in the Premier Division this season which sees them currently sitting in fourth place. But as Ben explained, he now feels it’s time for him to step back from managerial responsibilities for the time being. “I first discussed the possibility of stepping down about six weeks ago, both with the committee and Stewart and Kevin, but I feel now is the right time to do it. Before coming to the club I’d been managing in Sunday football for years, and in total I’ve been managing teams now for about 11 years. The past two years at Barnoldswick have been really busy and I’ve been finding it hard to switch off, more so than Stewart and Kevin who are different types of characters. I felt we had a lot to prove, coming into the league as a new team and also going with three joint managers, which has attracted a lot of attention and comment. But I’d like to think we have proved all the doubters were wrong. None the less, it can be a pressurised job, with all the ringing round, talking to players and planning and I just think it’s time for me to step out of it for a while, to have a look at what’s best for the club and what I want to do in the longer term. Having discussed the decision with Stewart and Kevin, and with the committee, both of them have said the position will be kept open for me if I want to return. I suppose that’s the benefit of having three joint managers, if one leaves you’re not leaving anyone in the lurch as there’s still two lads there. “It might only be for weeks, it might be months, but looking at the position we are in now with the club in fourth place in the league and a strong management team already in place, it just seems now is a good time to step out for a while. The one thing I do want to make clear is that I’m not looking to go anywhere else, and if and when I do come back into football it will be at Barnoldswick. I was at Formby on Saturday watching from the sidelines, and I acted as match day secretary for the team. I’ll be going to Congleton in midweek for the game there as well. I intend to carry on watching games home and away, it just won’t be from the dugout.” Pictured left Ally Pickering - Manager of the Month for March 2011 with League Secretary John Deal prior to last Saturday’s game against Bacup Borough at Church Lane.

Around The Grounds Mechanics Ground - AFC Blackpool The Vodkat League Challenge 3rd Round saw Town visit Blackpool for the second time this season this time to take on First Division League Leaders AFC Blackpool. Town’s last visit to Jepson Way was a pre-season contest in 2009 but this was the first competitive contest between the two sides since Town’s 7-0 win at Hoghton Road in 1992. The ground has been improved since my last visit a few years before the last friendly match when we arrived for a pre-season contest and there was a bone dry pitch with grass that was far too long. Upon entering the ground through the turnstile the pitch is in front of you and the clubhouse/dressing room building is off to your right. In front of this building there is a covered seating area but the rest of this nearside touchline sees no cover. Upon making your way to the far end goal you find a large covered terraced area situated centrally behind the goal and advancing around to the far side is another covered stand which runs along the touchline housing more seats. Completing the lap see us behind the goal at the turnstile end and this end has another covered area, smaller than the one at the opposite end but never the less still ample and ranks this ground apart from many in the two divisions of the Vodkat League as you have covered areas along the four sides of the ground allowing you to watch the action from the vantage point of your choice regardless of the weather, which was lucky on the night of our visit as there was torrential rain and a fierce wind! AFC’s clubhouse has also had some work done on it over the past few years and it is a much improved facility than the one we visited some years before. All in all the ground would be an asset to the Vodkat League top flight if as seems likely the team provide the top two finish to see the team formerly know as Mechanics promoted come the end of April

Saint’s Alive . . . Sitting in the back of a taxi, a nun notices that the driver is looking at her in his mirror. Realising that he has been rumbled, the cabbie explains, “I’m sorry for staring, Sister, and I don’t want to offend you, but my number one fantasy has always been to kiss a nun.” “Well, all right – let’s do it,” says the nun. “But you have to be Catholic and unmarried.” The cabbie assures the nun on both counts before climbing into the back seat, where he is greeted with a lingering, passionate smacker on the lips. He is momentarily ecstatic, but then starts crying. “Whatever is the matter?” asks the nun. The cabbie is beside himself with remorse. “Forgive me, Sister, but I lied to you,” he sobs. “I’m married and Jewish.” “No worries,” says the nun. “My name’s Geoffrey, and I’m going to a fancy dress party.” Bill and Steve are having a drink in the pub. “Do you fancy a game of darts?” asks Bill. “That’s a good idea,” replies Steve, and he asks the landlord for the loan of some arrows. “Right, we’ll play 501 up, best of seven games, nearest the bull starts,” says Steve. “Baa,” says Bill. “Moo,” says Steve. “Fair enough,” says Bill. “You get the first throw.” In a remote part of Columbia, police discover a field full of marijuana and decide to burn the lot. The fire is blazing when an officer notices a flock of terns flying around the area. Concerned about the effects the smoke could have on them, he calls the Animal Welfare Department for advice. Sadly, his worst fears are confirmed, and no tern is left unstoned. Finally, after producing five girls, Luke’s wife gives birth to a boy, but the baby only has a head - nothing else. Luke doesn't care, though - he is just happy to have a son at last. Against all odds the boy survives into adolescence and, on his lad’s eighteenth birthday, the proud father takes him to the pub for his first drink. “A glass of your best scotch,” orders Luke. The boy downs it in one gulp, and - POP - he grows a neck. Hardly daring to believe his eyes, Luke orders another glass of scotch, which the lad eagerly consumes and - POP - a torso appears. “Keep ’em coming,” shouts Luke, excitedly. After another four glasses the boy has a whole body, and everyone cheers, his father loudest of all. Whole-bodied but tipsy, the boy stands on his new legs and staggers to the left, then to the right, and out of the door straight into the path of a passing lorry. The pub falls silent. “You know, Luke,” says the barman, sadly. “You should have quit while he was a head.” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
