Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League, Premier League contest against our friends from Congleton Town. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. In our last outing a week ago against Bacup we took a small step to ease the relegation worries as we battled our way to 0-0 draw, Iain Dyson having the best chance for Town when he was sent though on goal Ian Roby but he could not get hold of his effort and the visiting stopper thwarted him. Chris Brinksman in the home goal turned in his best performance of his short career at the club to defy the visits on a couple of occasions as we gained a point on our relegation rivals with AFC Liverpool going down 1-0 at this afternoon’s visitors Congleton and Atherton LR being thumped 6-0 by Runcorn Town. This afternoon sees us end the run of four home matches on the bounce hosting “The Bears” who narrowly defeated us 1-0 at their place back at the start of October. We will be looking to build on the point we gained with the 0-0 draw against Bacup here last Saturday as we look to ease our way out of the relegation zone.

THE MILLHOUSE

We have a couple of tough matches against title hopefuls coming up after this afternoon’s contest as we visit Runcorn Linnets next Saturday before hosting Barnoldswick Town the following Tuesday (20th March). Congleton visited Ramsbottom United on Tuesday evening and went down 3-0 to three late goals from the Championship hopefuls and will be looking to bounce back from this disappointment this afternoon. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to a vital victory. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Events which led to the formation of Congleton Town Football Club, began in the 1890’s, the St James’ North Street School amalgamated with another local club, the Messrs Pointons Joiners Shop. They played on West Heath before housing was built in that area, and then became Congleton Hornets Football Club. The Hornets played at the Willow Street ground famed in Congleton, and competed in the South Cheshire League and recorded its’ record league win, 10-0 against Audley in the 1897/98 season. Congleton Town Football Club succeeded the Hornets in 1901, playing in the Crewe and District League for four years, the first three of which saw the club lift the League Championship. The Club then moved into the North Staffordshire League in 1905, and won the League Championship in the 1919/20 season. The following year they joined the Cheshire County League, regarded at the time as the best League outside the Football League. The following season they finished runners-up and won the coveted Cheshire Senior Cup in their first appearance in the Final. The Club then suffered a barren spell until the Senior Cup was won again in 1938. Success after the War did not descend on Booth Street until the 1971/72 season when the Club, now playing in the Mid-Cheshire League, won the League Cup after being runners-up in the League both that season and in the previous season. Three Mid-Cheshire League Championships then came to Booth Street in the 1973/74, 1975/76 and 1977/78 seasons, together with the League Cup and the Cheshire Saturday Cup. Although this was the most successful period of the Club’s history as regards silverware, the truly successful period began in the 1981/82 campaign, when the Second Division of the Cheshire County League was gained on the last game of the season, and Town were narrowly beaten to the Cup by Macclesfield Town. That was the last season of the Cheshire County League before the North West Counties League came into existence. As founder members of this new League, Congleton finished the first three campaigns in mid-table and then were narrowly beaten to the Championship by Clitheroe on goal difference in the 1985/86 season. The Club then had its, application to join the Northern Premier League rejected, but joined the higher league when the First Division of the NFL was formed in 1987. The highlight of the 1989/90 season was to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Although beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra, that achievement re-kindled local interest in the Club upon which its management hoped to build. The Final of the NPL’s First Division Cup was also reached in this season, but the “Bears” were beaten 5-1 on aggregate by Harrogate Town. The “Bears” enjoyed exciting times in the First Division, initially finishing in mid-table but then, playing to avoid relegation as the seasons come to a close. Between 1993 and 1997 a new Board of Directors brought financial and managerial stability to the Club, whilst the present Directors aim to continue this work and improve the Club’s fortunes in the years ahead. The club had a good season in 1999/2000 but fell away badly the following year. Despite reaching a best ever 4th Round of the FA Trophy before defeat by Worksop Town, they struggled badly in the league. The club appointed Sean Connor as manger in February 2001 but he could not prevent them finishing bottom of the UniBond League and relegation became a reality. The early season of 2001/02 saw the club take just 9 points from 17 league matches and early exit from FA Cup and FA Vase. Sean Connor was replaced as manager by Kevin Langley, ex Everton and Man City. The club made a fine revival and had reached virtual safety before Langley’s shock move to Kidsgrove Athletic. Bryan Griffiths took over as manager and gained the points to make safety a certainty and stake a strong claim to keep the manager’s job. He was formally appointed at the end of the season. Gary Bickerstaffe joined him as assistant and in September 2002 he invited Kevin Langley to return as a player and to help with coaching. When Griffiths left to join Rossendale Utd, Kevin Langley was re-appointed as manager and Mark Cox joined to complete an experienced management team. Off the field the club continued to enjoy growing support from sponsors and steady improvements in its facilities, culminating with the signing of a two-year deal with Macclesfield based SSG Group of Companies during the summer of 2003. During the summer of 2002, the clubhouse underwent major refurbishment NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

. . . Congleton Town Football Club and is seen by the club as a major step towards increasing its revenue potential. The changing facilities were redesigned and upgraded. The team reached the fifth Round of the FA Vase, beat three higher league sides in reaching the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, the semi-finals of the Cheshire Senior Cup and the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. In all cup competitions other than the FA Cup, only the eventual finalists beat the Bears. With promotion missed, a number of players left the club in the summer of 2004 leaving Kevin Langley with the task of rebuilding the side for the 2004/05 campaign. After a poor start and early exits from all major cup competitions, Karl Wilcox replaced Kevin Langley after he resigned in November 2005. In a further twist in an already difficult season, Karl Wilcox resigned after 11 defeats in 12 games. Paul Moore was appointed for the remainder of the season and he guided the team to safety before confirmation of his appointment signalled the start of rebuilding of a side aiming to challenge for honours. 2005/06 started brightly but swift exits from cup competitions were a disappointment. After many changes in personnel, the team settled to end the season with a creditable run in that held promise for 2006/07. After a steady start to the 2006/07 campaign, Paul Moore left to manage Leek Town and Andy Lee took over the reins. The Bears lifted their first piece of silverware for some time winning the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup defeating Witton Albion 3-0 at Wincham Park. Lee stepped down as he announced a proposed move to Blackpool and Anthony Buckle and Darren Twigg were to take over. Off the field new floodlights were installed and the stand behind the bottom goal was reroofed. The 2008/09 season saw the Bears ended a creditable 4th placed finish. A final run in of just 1 league defeat in the last 20 matches encouraged everyone. With two new key local businessmen, Nick Shatwell and Martin Lenton teaming up to add impetus to the club’s ambition, significant development of the clubs facilities have been started. A redesigned entrance, turnstiles and car park were the first step. Refurbishment of the club house followed and tarmac has been laid in the car park. For the start of 20010/11 the club had an improved hospitality suite for sponsors and a new boardroom. Buckle and Twigg went about strengthening the squad for a serious attempt to lift some silverware but again the Bears were to fall short as they finished in a disappointing 8th position. At the end of the 2010–11 season joint managers Anthony Buckle and Darren Twigg stepped down and Joe Paladino, was appointed at the beginning of the season, but some disappointing results and declining attendances saw his reign short-lived. He was replaced on 6th November 2011 by Dean Sibson, who took on the role of caretaker manager until a successor was appointed on 31st January 2012. Jim Vince, former FC Halifax, Witton Albion, Woodley Sports and Abbey Hey manager now takes up the reins. A Word from the Manager . . . Hello and welcome to Edge Green Street for today’s North West Counties Premier League game against our friends from Cheshire, Congleton Town FC. Let’s hope everyone connected to their club have enjoyed a safe journey here and are treated to an entertaining game of football. Last Saturday’s game against Bacup was hopefully a turning point in the season for us, collecting a point and keeping a clean sheet may not seem a great achievement in itself, but when confidence is low it could just be just the tonic we needed to hopefully kick on and collect that much needed win this afternoon. I was disappointed with our second half performance last Tuesday against Alsager and a few harsh words were spoken in the dressing room, but to be fair to the lads they responded in the correct way and showed that in the Bacup performance. But we need to be pushing on today and trying to get three points on the board. Congleton arrive here with a new management team in place and big ambitions for next season. The new manager Jim Vince has already started to shape the team into his own side and I am sure he will add more of his own players in the summer as Congleton look to get out of the NWCL. But like another 5 or 6 teams with similar ambitions he will find it’s a difficult league to get promoted from, with only one place up for grabs. As for ourselves we need to try and achieve a finish out of the bottom two so we are Warrington Granite & Marble are the Northwest’s competing against the likes of Congleton next leading specialists in Granite Worktops, Quartz season. Worktops and Marble Worktops, with a superb reputation based upon quality and reliability. Our No doubt Jim will have his team fired up for today’s time served stone craftsmen have created game so we must match everything they throw at us fabulous worktops for some of the most and then give a little bit more as well. We have some prestigious homes in the UK and abroad. good players at the club we just need to play for one another and cut out silly individual errors that have proved costly in previous games. So get behind the lads and hopefully cheer us on to the three points. Enjoy the game Jimmy McBride PS.. DVDs of the Everton game are available to buy for £5 if anyone is interested. A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division game against our friends and rivals from Congleton Town. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have enjoyed a safe journey and are treated to an entertaining encounter. Many thanks to this afternoon’s match sponsors North West Vans Ltd and to our match ball sponsors Artisan Ceramics for their continued support. Our last outing saw the lads battle for a much deserved point courtesy of a 0-0 against Bacup Borough. While there was some disappointment at the lack of chances created in the game I thought we looked a solid defensive unit, with Chris Brinksman making a couple of excellent saves and Ian Roby (pictured left) continuing his impressive form at right back - and deservedly earning the Man of the Match award. Congratulations also go to Colin Quirk and Scott Baker who were our Player of the Month recipients for November and January respectively (pictured overleaf). The team as a whole need to take some confidence from this performance as we continue our battle against relegation.

Congleton Town arrive off the back of a win and a loss in the last week. Midweek they suffered a 3-0 away defeat at Championship chasing Ramsbottom United with all the goals coming in the last ten minutes. While last Saturday the ‘Bears’ secured a 1 -0 home victory over AFC Liverpool with Daniel Schwarz hitting the only goal. Our meeting at Booth Street earlier this season earned the home side a narrow 1-0 win so this afternoon will be an opportunity for Town to even things up! League Vice Chairman Alan Farnworth has decided to retire from League duties at the end of the season. Alan has been a great friend to St Helens Town (and many other clubs) over many years and was at last Saturday’s game with Bacup despite his on-going illhealth. I’m sure everyone at the club wishes him well and hopefully we will still see him at some of our games. Our 1987 FA Vase Anniversary celebrations continue in today’s programme with a look at rounds 2, 3 and 4. The Vase story will continue over our remaining match day programmes and I have a good selection of action photographs from the Falmouth, Emley and Warrington Town games as well as the build-up to the final and the post match celebrations. If anyone Executive Programme Sponsors Season 20112011-12

has any photos or other memorabilia that I could include please let me know. I am hopeful I will shortly be able to announce the details of a ‘get together’ of the FA Vase winning team at the end of the season. Congratulations go to the St Helens Town Juniors who reached the final of the Lancashire FA U15s competition at Leyland last week. Unfortunately, they narrowly lost out to Lytham St Annes YMCA in a cracking game that was a pleasure to witness. There’s a full match report and photos (courtesy of Tony Greenwood at www.kipax.com) available elsewhere in today’s programme. It’s been interesting to see reported on the League’s website this week the general interest from clubs thinking of making the step up - according to the Scott Baker (top) and news item some seventeen clubs have expressed an interest and while not all Colin Quirk receiving of these will proceed some certainly will. One club who seem to have appeared their Player of the Month from nowhere are Widnes Town FC who are a brand new club wanting to join awards from manager Division One - they have former Liverpool and England defender Mark Wright Jimmy McBride as their Chairman and look to have secured tenure at the Stobart Stadium, Widnes! The rumour mill is also in full flow and it appears Flixton are seriously considering their future in the North West Counties Football League - and no doubt there will be the usual reshuffles, etc over the summer which means we are likely to be at the start of the pre-season before anyone can confirm the make-up of our two divisions. Let’s hope we can ensure we are not part of the relegation equation by finishing outside the bottom two! This task was made even harder as AFC Liverpool recorded another victory in midweek when they came from 3-2 down to win 3-4 against a Silsden side who finished with 9 men!! The winning goal scored by former Town player Muktar Mahama nine minutes from time. Our final fixtures have now been confirmed and the outstanding games at Bacup Borough and at home to Colne will take place on Saturday 31st March and Tuesday 3rd April respectively. Town are away at Runcorn Linnets next Saturday afternoon and the following Tuesday evening (20th March) we entertain championship challengers Barnoldswick Town. All our remaining fixtures are detailed in the centre pages of today’s programme. Enjoy the game and let’s cheer on the lads to victory. Please join us in the clubhouse for the St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ award and the usual post-match banter. FA Vase - the 25th Anniversary . . . This April sees the 25th anniversary of St. Helens Town’s win over Warrington Town in the Final of the FA Vase. In a series of articles, we look back round-byround on the club’s successful campaign to land the prestigious trophy at the first attempt. PART 2 – Rounds 2, 3 and 4 The FA Vase came into being in 1975 as the replacement for the FA Amateur Cup. St. Helens Town had, before 1986, entered the FA Trophy, but that competition had become dominated by the giants of the non-league game and the chances of Town making progress – and money – in the Trophy were slim. In the Summer of 1986, the club elected to enter the FA Vase for the first time, little knowing that they would go on to lift the prize at Wembley on 25th April 1987. Into Round 2 and another home draw, this time against Guisborough Town from Cleveland, members of the Northern League Second Division. The visitors had been to Wembley as losing Vase finalists in 1980 but, on a very windy day, it was St. Helens Town who took the initiative, hitting the bar twice before Phil Layhe scored just before half-time, latching on to Marty Cummins’ long ball before beating the ‘keeper from close range The second half was a tight affair, with the home team standing firm in a marvellous defensive performance, the only danger coming a few minutes before the end when Tony Williams had to clear off the goal-line. Town’s team was: Andy Johnston; Paul Benson, Tony Williams, Barry Lowe and John Bendon; Marty Cummins, Tommy O’Neil, Jimmy Collins and Brian Rigby; Jay McComb and Phil Layhe Subs: John Deakin and Dave Collins. Scorer: Layhe. Another round and, remarkably, a fifth consecutive home draw, Wythenshawe Amateurs from the Manchester League arriving at Hoghton Road on 13th December. On a very cold day, on a very muddy pitch, with heavy rain and sleet much in evidence, Town got off to the worst possible start, going one down after just seven minutes. However, better late than never, Jay McComb equalised from a Jimmy Collins corner 9 minutes later and Town were on their way. On 22 minutes, Tony Williams put the home side ahead with a spectacular volley and soon after half-time Jimmy Collins wrapped up the game at 4-1 with a brace of goals, his second from the penalty spot. . . . thoughts of Wembley continue! Town fielded a near unchanged team, Stu Humphries taking over from Dave Collins on the bench. Scorers: Collins (J) 2, McComb, Williams. For Round 4, Town were called upon to travel away for the first time, making the long journey to Cambridgeshire to take on Wisbech Town of the Eastern Counties League at their Fenland Park ground. The home team were confident of success, having been beaten semi-finalists in each of the two previous campaigns, losing to Halesowen after a replay in 1985 and Southall in 1986. Tony Williams was unavailable, having gone under the surgeon’s knife for a cartilage operation and Paul Wilson took his place. Following the lengthy journey, delayed a week by heavy snow, St. Helens produced a tremendous defensive display to keep the scoresheet blank in the first half but Phil Layhe netted twice in the 67th and 90th minutes to steer Town to a 5th round slot. Manager Alan Wellens brought in full-back Paul Wilson for his FA Vase debut, replacing Tony Williams but the rest of the team was unchanged, with Bryan Griffiths taking over from Humphries on the bench. Scorer: Layhe 2.

St Helens Town Hall of Fame . . . Now in his 89th year, Bernhard Carl Trautmann was born in Walle, near Bremen, Germany on 22nd October 1923 and upon leaving school, he became an apprentice motor mechanic. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1941 as a radio operator, eventually becoming a paratrooper, winning 5 medals, including an Iron Cross (First Class) on the Eastern Front, but having transferred to the Western Front, was captured by the British in 1944, seeing out the remainder of the War in prison camps in Northwich and Ashton-inMakerfield. Whilst at Ashton, he played in football matches, initially as an outfield player, but following an injury, went in goal, where his all-round athletic abilities allowed his career to blossom. In 1948, having declined an offer of repatriation, he began playing for St. Helens Town and quickly earned a reputation as a goalkeeper of rare talent, attracting interest from several Football League clubs. His brief career with Town began with a home game against South Liverpool in the Liverpool County Combination on 28th August 1948. On his third appearance, it was reported that “very sportingly the Skelmersdale supporters gave Trautmann a wonderful reception.” Later in the year, the club secretary, John Friar, proclaimed in his programme notes “To put your minds at rest again, I am pleased to inform you that B. Trautmann is not leaving Sutton. As I have told you before, his whole interests are in the Town Club and he is more than happy with us. But he has been granted leave to visit his parents. He will be going early in the New Year and we shall lose his services for a matter of three matches.” Such was the town’s affection for Bert that they sent him on his way with a large food hamper and a considerable sum of cash, which was an overwhelming gesture of kindness not lost on Bert and, indeed, his family at such a difficult time in Germany’s history. On Bert’s return, he assisted Town to success in the George Mahon Cup competition, his and the club’s first trophy. Runcorn were beaten in the final at Prescot before a crowd of 9000. As the 1949/50 season opened, with Town in the Lancashire Combination, Second Division, the pressures on St. Helens to part with their star player became ever stronger and a transfer to Manchester City was agreed, but deferred until Town’s elimination from the FA Cup. That occurred on 1st October 1949 when Town lost 0-3 to Bangor City and the transfer was completed the following Thursday. Bert (pictured opposite with former City ‘keeper Frank Swift) had played 43 games for St. Helens Town, but he returned on three subsequent occasions, twice for friendly matches with Manchester City and once to marry the secretary’s daughter! . . . Bert Trautmann OBE Bert’s debut for City came in a game with Bolton Wanderers on 15th October. There were mass protests over his signing by the citizens of Manchester, who had suffered so much at the hands of the Germans in the War. However, the affable keeper did not take long to win over the hearts of the City fans and any hostility soon melted away. He went on to make 508 League appearances for the Maine Road club in a 15-year career, culminating in a testimonial game which attracted a crowd of over 47,000. The game for which Bert is best remembered is the 1956 FA Cup Final against Birmingham City. The Sky Blues won 3-1, but Bert broke his neck when caught by a stray boot and bravely played on for the remaining fifteen minutes. The extent of his injury was only confirmed some days later. Honours continued to flow for Bert, selected twice for The Football League and he was the worthy recipient of the FA’s Footballer of the Year Trophy in 1956. After retirement as a player, Bert became manager of Stockport County, subsequently managing two teams in his native Germany and completing his career in charge of Burma, Liberia and Pakistan. Bert was awarded an honorary OBE in 2004 for his services to Anglo-German relations through football – his Trautmann Foundation is a charitable trust set up to raise funds to foster that aim – and the following year, he was inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. Bert has for many years lived in Spain, but still visits England occasionally. Early in 2009 Bert visited Manchester and during his short stay he made time to meet with St Helens Town officials. Bert was kind enough to donate a number of items which the club auctioned, raising in excess of £1000. The relationship between Bert and St Helens Town has been cemented and Bert was delighted, in September 2009, to accept the club’s offer of becoming its Honorary President alongside former Town and Manchester United great Bill Foulkes. In addition to legend Bert Trautmann St Helens Town can boast a number of player who reached the very top. Bill Foulkes: Rainhill bot Bill, played for Town as a youngster in the early 50’s and his potential was spotted by Manchester United for who he signed as one of the ‘Busby Babes’. He was involved in United’s 1957 championship win which consequently led to a European Cup quest which was to result in the fateful Munich air disaster of February 1958. Along with ‘keeper Harry Gregg, Bill became one of the heroes of the tragedy which killed so much young talent. He remained loyal to Sir Matt Busby’s dream and was a member of United’s team which beat Benfica at Wembley ten years later to finally land the European Cup. Town Hall of Fame continued . . . John Connelly: From Clock Face, John played for Town in the late 50’s after having signed from the then highly successful St Teresa’s junior team. Such was his talent on the wing we could not keep him long and he was soon snapped up by Burley who by the 60’s were one of the top sides in the land. John was an immediate success at Turf Moor and was a member of the ‘Clarets’ league championship winning side of 1962 which naturally led to the ‘European’ experience. As the decade unfolded John won a place in the England side and was in Alf Ramsey’s 1966 World Cup winning squad. He later left Burnley for Manchester United. John Quinn: With the same pedigree as friend John Connelly, Johnny Quinn signed from St Teresa’s and after a brief non-league career with Town and Prescot Cables, joined Sheffield Wednesday. The Hillsborough side were the ‘nearly’ team of the early and mid-sixties and the pinnacle of John’s career was his appearance in the 1966 FA Cup Final, but he had to settle for a runner’s up medal as Everton made a dramatic comeback to overturn a two nil deficit in winning 3-2. Geoff Nulty: One of Town’s youngest ever captains, Geoff played at Hoghton Road in the early seventies before becoming another target for the Burnley scouting system. In a distinguished career he then moved on to Newcastle and towards the end the decade was signed by Gordon Lee for Everton. Sadly his career was ended in 1980 following a derby match incident with Liverpool’s Jimmy Case at Goodison Park. Dave Bamber: The late seventies was Dave’s era at Hoghton Road before he went on to become a cult figure at Blackpool where he enjoyed two spells. In between, ace goalscorer Dave played in the top flight with Coventry as well as a brief flirtation with Swindon Town before returning to the North West and Bloomfield Road. Derek Hennin: Derek was a member of the awesome Bolton Wanderers side of the late fifties who won the FA Cup in the notorious ‘Nat Lofthouse’ final of 1958 when Manchester United were beaten 2-0. One of the ‘Trotters’ famous H’s of that era, Derek was a terrier on the pitch and a perfect gentleman off it. He became our player/manager in the mid sixties before finally hanging up his boots. Derek died in 1989 and football lost a real ‘character’. Tommy O’Neil: Local boy Tommy (pictured left with the FA Vase) from Parr left school as a sporting prodigy having also captained the GB Rugby League side. However, Manchester United signed him and under Frank O’Farrell he played alongside the legendary Best, Law and Charlton in the early 1970’s. Sadly, he was not to figure in Tommy Docherty’s plans and dropped down the leagues with Southport, Tranmere and Halifax with. He was, however, to share in Town’s greatest hour when he held aloft the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. Sadly, Tommy lost a battle with cancer and died in 2006 aged 53. The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division.

Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. Town boast an impressive ‘Hall of Fame’, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. Other players from the 1950s to progress to League football include goalkeepers Jack Arkwright (Liverpool) and Jonny Daniels (New Brighton). John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wed), Mike Davock (Stockport County), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle Utd & Everton) and more recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool. Other players to have progressed to league football from Town during the 1980s and 90s include Bryan Griffiths and Joe Paladino (both to Wigan Athletic), Ray Newlands (Plymouth Argyle) and Paul Edwards (Shrewsbury Town) and Mark Leonard (Everton & Bradford City). Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town moved from their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to join St. Helens RLFC at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. The club continues to share with Ashton Town following the departure from Knowsley Road in November 2010 but spring 2012 should see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints. St Helens Town AFC Managers . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in midterm. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Allan Wellens receiving the Lancs Combination Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was Championship Trophy from Wesley Bridge in 1972 ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured left) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Having previously been the manager of highly successful local league side ’Furnacemen’s Arms FC’ Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However, the club decided it could not wait for a repeat and an upsurge in results as the final few weeks of the 2008-09 season unfolded and Town remained rooted in a relegation spot. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe (picture left) was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games of the season. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson takes over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season 2011- Present Jimmy McBride makes a return to Town following a brief spell in the Cheshire League with Billinge FC. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

St Helens Town v Bacup Borough . . . Saturday 3rd March 2012 North West Counties League, Premier Division St Helens Town 0-0 Bacup Borough The month of March started off with Town gaining a much needed return against Bacup Borough at Edge Green Street this afternoon. The first half was one of very little goalmouth incident but when the first chance came it was the visitors that almost took the lead. Daniel Cocks sent in a ball from the left wing and Liam “Tommy” Turner found himself with a free header centrally he must have thought that he had opened the scoring but the home stopper Chris Brinksman did well to tip the effort over the bar and the resulting corner came to nothing. A couple of minutes later at the other end it was Town’s turn to spurn a great chance to open the scoring, Ian Roby advanced down the right wing and found Iain Dyson centrally with an excellent ball Dyson bore down on goal but his effort was scuffed and allowed Ryan Jones in the Bacup goal to parry the effort before claiming the loose ball. At the other end after 23 minutes Turner had another chance as he got free in the Town box to meet another cross from the right, this time his headed effort beat Brinksman but did not find the back of the net as it thundered off the crossbar and the loose ball was headed back to a grateful Brinksman. There was no further action of great note and the sided went in deadlocked at the break. The second period started with the hosts creating a couple of openings the first came 8 minutes after the restart when Danny Clarke sent in a dangerous right wing which Michael Burns looked to meet but the Davey Luker got to the flight of the ball before him and headed it behind. From a similar corner a few minutes later Clarke again delivered and it was Dyson who got on the end of the centre on this occasion but he could not keep his header down as it sailed over the bar from 12 yards out. Just after the hour mark it was Bacup’s turn to threaten from a corner as Cocks delivered from the right into the 6 yard box but a brave header from skipper Burns saw the danger cleared. The visitors almost caught Town on the counter NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

. . . Match Report and Photos attack after the hosts had made a hash of a corner, the break saw Cocks get down the right wing and he in turn found Turner who tried his luck from the edge of the area but was denied by Brinksman who did well to swiftly extend himself to his left and block the effort. In the closing stages Town were denied when Jones did well to claw a dangerous left wing corner away from danger with plenty of Town players looking to attack it on the far post. The visitors looked far more likely to snatch all three points in the final throws of the contest and chances fell to Porya Ahmardi whose effort was turned around the post by Brinksman and Turner who received the ball from Cocks but could not hit the target and the sides had to settle for a share of the spoils. St Helens Town; Brinksman, Roby, McLoughlin, Addison, Flood, Burns (C), Clarke, Frazer, Luby, Dyson (Olsen 83), Smith (Corrie 88). Subs Not Used; Quirk, Butorins, Michalopoulos.
