Talk of the Town Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against New Mills. Let me open by welcoming the players, management, committee and supporters of New Mills to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this evening. We come into tonight’s match against New Mills on the back of a 5-2 win at Norton United which has seen us advance to the Quarter Finals of the Vodkat League Cup for the first time since 2005. It was a strange match and a potential banana skin as we were expected to win being the Premier Division outfit another issue in the mix was the fact that we had not played for five weeks and Norton had been in action on Tuesday evening. The boys did what they had to and goals from Mike Scully and Mike Fargher saw us take a 2-0 lead into the half time interval. The second half came to life after a rather harsh dismissal for the hosts keeper and Rob Hanley eventually sent the ball home from the resultant free kick. Norton, who threatened more when reduced in numbers pulled one back before Dave Burns netted his first goal of what I am sure will be many for the first team and another Norton goal made it 4-2 in the final minute. The scoring was not finished as Brian Hatton & Hanley pressurised a mistake that culminated in an own goal and Town will now meet Wigan Robin Park who overcame Runcorn Linnets. New Mills also come into this game off the back of a Cup win, New Mills securing a 2-1 victory over Witney United of the Hellenic League and ensuring they are the last Vodkat League team standing in this seasons FA Vase. We wish “The Millers” all the best for their home match in the last sixteen where they will host Norton & Stockton Ancients who put paid to Bootle’s FA Vase challenge on Saturday. This evening’s contest will be a severe test of the Town squad and it will take an excellent performance to ensure that New Mills do not leave Merseyside with any return from this evenings game. Gary and the lads will be aware of what will be needed this evening to ensure that we start the year off on the best possible footing here at Knowsley Road. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals New Mills FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own home support have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality during their short stay as well as an entertaining encounter! Our last home encounter, back in early December, saw the lads come from a goal behind to defeat Congleton Town 2-1, securing three vital points with both goals from ‘Man of the Match’ Iain Dyson, pictured left with Match Sponsor Chris Newman of Flexible Business Interiors. Town continued their winning ways in our final game before Christmas and the weather intervened, when we made the trip to Ashton Athletic. The game was an end-to-end cracker and while not for the purist, the game proved thoroughly entertaining with Town eventually winning 5-4. The pitch condition led to some shocking defending - having gone a goal down to our hosts Town his back before half time to take a 2-1 lead. However, Ashton never gave up and levelled at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 (and had a penalty brilliantly saved by Graham McCall) and just as it appeared that we would have to settle for a point Iain Dyson hit a stoppage time winner, via the inside of both posts, to the relief of the Town faithful. After a five week break it was a delight to get under way with a trip to Division 1 outfit Norton United in the Vodkat League Cup and the lads secured a ‘Saints’ v Wigan (Robin Park) quarter final tie courtesy of a 2-5 win. Saturday’s goals coming from Mike Scully, Mike Fargher, Rob Hanley, David Burns and an own goal. It proved to be a good encounter which will hopefully have removed some of the ‘cob-webs’ created by a few weeks of inactivity on the pitch!! Today’s visitors have had a productive week since their enforced ‘winter break’ came to an end, progressing in the Derbyshire Senior Cup with a 2-3 win at Long Eaton United, after finding themselves 2-0 down at half time. Congratulations also go the ‘The Millers’ who made it to the last 16 of the FA Vase with a 2-1 home win over Witney United. They will now face Norton and Stockton Ancients, conquerors of Bootle last weekend. Congratulations to Phil Mitchell (pictured right) and Iain Dyson who were the club’s Player of the Month for November and December respectively. Many thanks to Johnson Toyota Liverpool for their continued sponsorship of the Player of the Month awards and both players will shortly select their allexpenses paid car for a week!! Town take to the road after tonight’s game with a trip to Squires Gate on Saturday 30 January followed by a visit to Glossop NE a week last on Saturday 6 February 2010. In Town Today . . . New Mills AFC, based in the High Peak of Derbyshire, have been at the forefront of organised football in the area for almost 125 years. The Club's home ground, regarded as one of the most picturesque in nonleague football, is situated opposite the impressive St George’s Church and has a splendid backdrop of Kinder Scout, which is the highest point in the Peak District National Park. The game of football has been played in the town of New Mills since the early 1880’s, when the club first played in friendlies before joining leagues such as the North Cheshire League and ultimately the Manchester League. In the period up to the First World War the club won almost everything on offer including the Derbyshire Minor Cup. In 1919, they commenced playing again and dropped the St. Georges from their name. They joined the Manchester league once again and finished top in 1924 and after finishing a runners-up the following season, lifted the championship once again in 1926. New Mills also won the Derbyshire Cup three seasons out of four. The club was extremely well supported and had regular gates of around 3000. Not bad with the town then having a population of 7,500. This was a very successful few seasons for the club and at least half a dozen players moved onto clubs in the Football League. The club played at a number of grounds before they moved to their present home at Church Lane in 1922. In 1959, Joe Martin took charge as manager which started a great run of success for the club. They won the league seven times as well as plenty of

. . . SNew Mills FC trophies before Joe retired in 1972. The club went into the Cheshire League in 1974 but had a lean time whilst members there. They became founder members in 1982 of the North West Counties League being placed in Division Two. Unfortunately, the club began to suffer financially they finished at the foot of the table and in the summer of 1983 ceased playing. Local amateur side Birch Vale and Thornsett FC were looking for a new ground and began playing at Church Lane. Within twelve months they adopted the name of New Mills. The new club began to progress firstly in the Lancashire and Cheshire Leagues’s New Mills rejoined the North West Counties League in 2004 and the first two seasons were ones of consolidation with the club finishing in 9th and then 12th positions. Under the stewardship of Tony Hancock and his assistant Paul Kirkham they are enjoying halcyon days again. 2006/7 saw the club win the Division Two Cup and also just failed to challenge for the title with a fourth placed finish. The 2007/8 season saw more silverware at Church Lane as the Second Division Championship was secured. The team broke numerous Club records as they won the Championship by ten points. A great deal of work has also been done on the clubs picturesque ground and the club were optimistic that the 2008/9 season would culminate in promotion to the UniBond League. Although the 2008/09 season saw another trophy triumph, The League Challenge Cup was secured following a win over Runcorn Linnets. New Mills put together a then an unprecedented twenty one game winning run only to be denied promotion to The Unibond League when in the box seat. A final day defeat at AFC Fylde resulted in the team finishing runners up on goal difference. The Club also run a reserve side which is currently playing in its inaugural season in The Cheshire Building Society Cheshire Football League (formerly known as The Mid Cheshire League) and a youth team which plays in The North West Youth Alliance. This season sees New Mills looking to go one better and secure top spot but can anyone catch run away leaders Newcastle Town? Vodkat League News New Community Officer At Bacup Borough Bacup Borough Football Club have appointed a Community Officer to bring the club more actively involved with the Community in general. Colin Mason, who is a UEFA B Qualified Coach, will head this history making Bacup Borough Football Club venture. The role will not just be focussed on football activities, as sport for all will play a prominent part, both at the club and at various schools throughout the area. Bacup Borough plans for Community participation to bring on board a Community Officer the ethos of Bacup Borough Football Organisations.

Around The Grounds Brocstedes Park – Ashton Athletic A reasonably neat and tidy ground that’s been tucked away in Ashton-in-Makerfield’s back garden, Brocstedes Park plays host to the home games of Ashton Athletic FC. The ground is tucked away from the main roads and housing estates and situated next to the M6 motorway. Brocstedes Park is at the end of an old farm road that Petr Solberg would have difficulty driving down and makes the car park at Knowsley Road look level! Although once you make your way through the turnstiles and into the ground you are presented with a reasonably tidy facility. There are large areas of grass on the far side and the far end of the ground behind the hard standing which are used for pre match warm-ups and a huge mountain of sand in the corner. The clubhouse is average, in both size and service, the barman wasn’t particularly friendly or helpful, not what you want out of a barman! Seating would be at a premium with two football team’s worth of people in there and the pool table doesn’t work terribly well. All vantage points are catered for through with a seating and covered standing stand down one half of the pitch with a reserved seating stand for club officials only. The rest of the ground is open standing so the covered areas would quickly become in demand on a poor weather day. The pitch itself has looked better and the poor recent weather will have had a hand in this, but at least you can get right up close to the action when standing on the perimeter fence. Not the best ground in the league, but certainly far from the worst. I remember the Boxing Day trip there last year had the man on the turnstiles tell us that Ashton Athletics’ programme was the best in the league, this time round not so much as the three A4 unstapled sheets of paper were a paltry effort. All in all, average score and average matchday experience. Overall score: 6/10

St Helens Town AFC . . . Re-formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

. . . A Brief History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-ofWar Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Introduction to the . . . Graeme McCall: Keeper in his second spell at the club after rejoining in the close season. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keeper’s jersey. Kevin Woods: Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones: Commanding centre half now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke: Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Rob Hanley: Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Iain Dyson: Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club’s top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond, had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell: Brother of Graeme, followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Adam Gilchrist: Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield. Marc Stephens: Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Dougie Pitts: Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere.

St. Helens Town squad Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen ‘Ben’ Kay: Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Nick McLoughlin: Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Paul Monteith: Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Peter Birch: Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possesses good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces. Luke Faulkner: Seventeen year old central defender who has recently joined the club from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Lee Riley: Joined the club last season as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables. Gary Bickerstaffe: Rejoined the club late last season as manager having had a previous spell as a player in the 1990s. His arrival last term ensured we staved off relegation comfortably with eight wins from our last 11 league encounters. A mid-field dynamo at the height of his playing career Gary has graced a number of clubs including Congleton Town, Winsford United and Bangor City and has been assistant Manager at both Warrington Town and Congleton and Manager at Garswood United. Other squad players include prolific strikers David Burns and Jamie Foster along with Andy Gillespie and Danny Clarke who have all stepped up from St Helens Town Reserve team football so far this season.

Fan’s Eye View Good evening and welcome to this Vodkat, North West Counties League Premier Division match against New Mills. May the travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result. So finally, we’re back and playing football under the Knowsley Road lights once again after the snow and rain curtailed the fixtures in the league once again. So I suppose I should open with a Happy New Year to one and all as this is the first time St Helens Town have played a home game in the New Year, and the first time for over a month. In fact the last time we were all gathered here was for the 2-1 victory over Congleton Town, remember that one? Two goals from Iain Dyson against his former club were enough to cement the victory. Town then ended the year with another good win in a crazy match against Ashton Athletic which saw them go behind early before staging a comeback to take the lead just before half time, before the referee allowed Ashton to score again before the break so it was level at half time. Town then took the lead again before being pegged back then again taking the lead and being pegged back again with time running out. But a last minute strike from Iain Dyson that hit the far post before rolling along the line and hitting the near post which in turn left the ball to nestle into the bottom corner of the net ensured that Town would avenge last season’s 0-5 drubbing on the same ground. The long winter break was then brought to an end last Saturday when Town travelled to Norton United in the 3rd round of the League Cup, some of the rust will have been shaken away after the long break with Town coming out 5-2 winners in a match that centred around the controversial sending off of Norton United goalkeeper Leigh Miller for handling outside the area, when it looked very much like he didn’t. But the reward for Town’s victory is a very juicy home tie against Wigan Robin Park in the quarter finals. Onto tonight’s game now though and it’s New Mills that provide the opposition, fresh off the back of their 2-1 victory over Witney United in the FA Vase at the weekend. Things have certainly gone fairly well for the Derbyshire side so far this season with them currently residing in 3rd position as the season hits halfway. However I do get the impression that the club feel hard done by to still be playing in this league this season after finishing 2nd in the league on goal difference to AFC Fylde last season, of course only the league leaders get promoted. That’s the way it’s been for as long as I can remember, well, unless the FA are doing more of their restructuring stuff that they so enjoy doing on a near yearly basis it seems. The result in this fixture last season could have been the difference for “The Millers”, St Helens Town running out 2-1 winners. Had a close header in the final minutes of that game just crept the right side of the post New Mills would have been promoted last season. It’s looking a difficult task to peg back Newcastle Town this term so maybe the Championship race will not see final day heartache for New Mills this season. It’s going to be a tough game tonight against a well drilled and very affluent team whose expectations far outweigh those of their hosts, so Town will probably be looking at getting anything out of this match as a bonus as they look to strengthen their league position. But more importantly, football returns to St Helens tonight so let’s get loud and proud for the boys in the red and white. Vodkat League News Bootle v Everton - Liverpool Senior Cup The recent Quarter Final draw for the Liverpool County FA Senior Cup has given Bootle a mouth-watering home tie against Everton F.C. - and the sides have previous! Tony Onslow's book 'The Forgotten Rivals', traces the origins of the original 'Merseyside' derby games between Everton and Bootle and makes for fascinating reading. The very first competitive game between the two sides took place on 20th October 1880 with Bootle running out winners by 4 goals to 0. In addition, first 'bragging rights' in the LCFA Senior Cup (known then as the Liverpool & District Challenge Cup) went to Bootle by way of a 3-1 victory in 1883. This was the inaugural year of the competition and Bootle went on to lift the trophy. However, things haven't always gone our way in these derby games and, in fact, the last ever meeting between the two clubs occurred in the final of the LCFA Senior Cup on 25th April 1893. The game was played at Hawthorne Road in front of a crowd of over 1500 and Everton emerged as victors by the odd goal in three. Unfortunately, this would be the last game the original Bootle FC ever played as they went into liquidation shortly afterwards. So, we'll settle for a similar attendance this time but not the result ...............or the aftermath! Everton have won this trophy more times than any other side (45 times) so it's a case of the 'first versus the most' and, it's Everton who are the form team going into this one having won 9 of the previous 13 games against Bootle between 1885 and 1893! Having said that, the Bucks (though a little 'ring rusty' like everyone else at the moment!) have changed dramatically since those early days (a few dodgy haircuts in the current squad aside) and are currently on an unbeaten run, having won their last 6 league and cup games so, it's all set for a cracking game, an enjoyable occasion and hopefully, a great night for the club. The date for the game has been confirmed as Monday 8th February 2010; KO 8pm at Delta Taxis Stadium, Vesty Road (off Bridle Road) Bootle. St Helens Town Juniors . . . The future’s bright for Town Established just three years ago, and now an FA Charter Standard Club, the ‘Town Juniors’ has grown into one of the largest junior outfits in the region. With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Burnley, Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players. The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team (pictured above) under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. Match Report Sat 23rd January; Vodkat League Cup, 3rd Rd Norton Utd 2-5 St Helens Town Town secured passage to the last eight of the Vodkat League Cup for the first time since 2005 with a comfortable victory over Norton United this afternoon. After a five week forced sabbatical due to the extreme weather conditions it was a slow start to the match for the visitors but things picked up on 16 minutes when Mike Scully ran onto a through ball from Ian Frazer beat his defender and slotted into the bottom right hand corner of the net from the edge of the box. The celebrations were almost cut short as the linesman was flagging but after a quick consultation Mr Bailey signalled and the goal stood. An injury to Peter Birch saw the left back replaced and a defensive reshuffle just after the half hour with Neil Jones switching from right to left back and Marc Stephens dropping back from right wing to fill in at right back. Before the interval Town doubled their advantage when Ian Frazer’s effort from the edge of the box deflected to Dave Burns who found Iain Dyson whose sublime touch beat his man and his ball to Mike Fargher gave him the simple task of sending the ball home from six yards out. The hosts could have pulled a goal back before half time when a right wing corner found Dean Smith on the front post and his shot was parried by Graeme McCall in the Town goal the ball broke loose but McCall recovered to claim the ball. Norton started the second half with an newly found impetus and Steve Allen looked dangerous testing McCall with an effort from the left of the box but the keeper was alert to keep the shot out. The game had hit a lull until it was reignited on 70 minutes a ball was played forward by Town and home stopper Leigh Miller came towards the edge of his area to claim the ball with him momentum he was unable to stop and appeared to carry the ball out of the area. After consultation between Referee and Linesman, Miller was rather harshly shown the red card and John Barass donned the gloves. Town rubbed salt in the hosts wounds when Stephens sent in the resultant free kick which Barass parried but Rob Hanley was first to react, Barass again parried but Hanley lifted the second loose ball over the stricken stopper and into the roof of the net. Norton were not to be kept out and quickly pulled a goal back, Paul Macari found space and unleashed a shot from 18 yards out into the bottom left hand corner of the net. In the closing stages Dave Burns broke his duck with the first team as he chased down a through ball beat his marker for speed got into the box and slotted the ball home from the right edge of the 6 yard box. In the final moments of the match Delroy Fox turned a right wing cross home at the front post and in added on time Brian Hatton, making his first appearance since the penultimate game of last season due to injury and Hanley chased a ball down and forced an error from Mark Soboljew who lofted an effort over Barass and into his own net. So Town will take on local rivals Wigan Robin Park in the quarter finals who overcame Runcorn Linnets this afternoon. In Other News...... Pylon problems for Mossley. Mossley are currently unable to play any fixtures at their Seel Park home as a result of the club's floodlight pylons being declared as unsafe. A situation that threatens the club future. On New Years Eve two of the original eight pylons collapsed within a 12 hour period. As a result, the committee called in the Tameside Health & Safety advisors, to assess the safety of the remaining six. On the 20th January an independent structural engineering company, recommended by TMBC inspected the remaining pylons and declared them as unsafe. As a result, all home matches must now be played away from Seel Park, until the matter is resolved. Other local clubs have been approached to play the forthcoming UniBond League fixtures at their grounds. This Saturdays game against Woodley Sports has been postponed as Mossley are unable to find a suitable venue at such short notice. The anticipated cost of replacing the lights is around ÂŁ30k, which the club's officials are desperately trying to raise, through funding applications and donations. Fortunately Tameside Council have verbally offered to contribute 50% of the cost but as yet nothing in writing, but the club still desperately need the balance! Mossley Football Club has been run by a voluntary committee since being in financial problems in May 2009. They have, until November 2009 successfully raised sufficient funds to pay current debts and keep to agreements with the creditors they inherited. But now with not having played for some seven weeks due to bad weather they are confronted by this major and costly problem. ossley urgently need support to ensure that Mossley continues to have a football team and importantly remains part of the community! A look back at . . . Mid-term report Half-way through the league season is a timely opportunity to take stock of the progress made at Knowsley Road and the management can feel justly proud of the club’s current position. Gary Bickerstaffe took over the reins at the end of March 2009 and the team finished with a flourish, winning six of the last eight games to end the season in 16th place with 46 points from 42 matches. This time around, in Gary’s first full season, they stand in 5th place with 39 points from 21 games, only 5 points off second place. The club, as a whole, has moved forward, on and off the field. The establishment of a reserve team for the first time in years has been successful, with that side doing well in the Liverpool County Combination competitions, as well as beginning to provide the first team with talented players, some of whom are pushing for permanent first-team places. The financial position has also improved, with marvellous support from our generous sponsors in particular. The first team began the season with a target of 20 points from the first ten games. That target was beaten by 3 points, with seven wins and only one defeat and that to the 100% league leaders, Newcastle Town. Bickerstaffe’s men got off to a flyer, with a 5-1 win at Abbey Hey and were unbeaten away from home until a disappointing defeat away to Congleton in midOctober. That form was extended to the FA Cup qualifiers, with wins at Parkgate and - most spectacularly - at highflying Colwyn Bay before defeat was met with at Cammell Laird, a game which proved to be Karl Ledsham’s last game before his move to Skelmersdale United. In contrast, there were early exits from the FA Vase at Padiham and the Liverpool Senior Cup, after extra time, at home to Warrington Town. The loss of Ledsham, coupled with the long-term unavailability of established players such as Brian Hatton due to injury and Andy Webster, away in the USA, would have seriously affected any team, but the emergence of youngsters such as Peter Birch and Luke Faulkner, coupled with solid defensive contributions from John Elias, Ian Frazer and goalkeeper Graeme McCall, along with recent signings Ben Kay and Dougie Pitts, have given the team more steel at the back following a lean spell during late October and early November, during which disappointing losses were suffered at Newcastle

. . . the season so far. and Maine Road, together with two poor shows at home to Squires Gate and Glossop. Happily, since that Glossop defeat, the team has remained unbeaten and has closed the gap on all the teams above, with the exception of runaway leaders Newcastle Town. The improvement on last season is there for all to see. Double victories have been secured against Runcorn Linnets, Ashton Athletic, Formby and Abbey Hey and no games have been lost to teams occupying the bottom 12 places in the current table. The home wins over Runcorn Linnets and Nelson were a joy to behold and when they’re in full flow, the forward line of new signing Rob Hanley and the Mitchell brothers are among the best in the Vodkat League. On present form, Town could make a realistic challenge for second place. 44 goals have been scored in league fixtures: Hanley has scored 8, Iain Dyson and Mike Scully 7 each and Graeme and Phil Mitchell nine between them. We’ve met Newcastle twice already, but have yet to play New Mills and travel to Ramsbottom, all difficult games but, in contrast to this time last year, all those games are winnable, as Town look towards their best finishing position since the move to Knowsley Road 10 years ago. There might also be a realistic chance of silverware, as Town are already through to the last eight of the Vodkat League Cup, Wigan Robin Park standing in the way of a passage through to the semifinals. Saint’s Alive . . . A man is sitting in a restaurant having his dinner when a stunning redhead walks in and sits at the next table. She is gorgeous and the man is tempted to go over and chat to her, but his self confidence lets him down. After a few minutes, the woman sneezes and her glass eye shoots out and sails through the air towards him. Instinctively, he flings out his hand and plucks the eye out of the air. He takes it back to the woman, who is obviously quite embarrassed at the situation. Thanking him, she pops the eye back in and invites him to join her. They enjoy an excellent meal, and she insists on paying for everything. When they leave the restaurant they go to a show, which she again insists on paying for, and afterwards she takes him back to her flat and treats him to the best night of his life. In the morning he is lying in bed, exhausted after the night of passion and not believing his luck. “Wow! - that was the best evening of my whole life. Do you treat all the men you meet like that?” he asks. “Oh, no,” she replies. “You just happened to catch my eye.” Two condemned prisoners are due for execution and have been moved to the anteroom next to the execution chamber. After the prison chaplain has spoken a few words, the Governor asks one of the prisoners if he has any last request. “Yes,” replies the prisoner. “I would like to hear Little Jimmy Osmond singing ‘Long Haired Lover from Liverpool’ just one last time before I die.” The Governor agrees and sends a warder off to obtain a record player and the appropriate recording. Then he turns to the second prisoner and asks if he has any last request. “Yes,” replies the condemned man. “Please kill me now!” A man is sitting quietly one day, reading his paper, at total peace with the world, when his wife sneaks up behind him and whacks him over the head with a large frying pan. “What in Heaven’s name was that for?” he asks, bewildered. “I found a piece of paper in a pocket of your trousers, with the name ‘Marylou’ written on it,” she says, accusingly. “You stupid woman,” he counters, rubbing his sore head. “Have you forgotten that I went to the races last week? Marylou is simply the name of one of the horses I had a bet on.” Satisfied with his explanation, his wife apologises and carries on about her business. A couple of days later the man gets home from work and again settles himself down to read his paper before dinner, when he is subjected to a repeat attack with the frying pan. “What the hell is wrong this time?” he demands. “Your horse phoned.” replies his wife.
