Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Liverpool Senior Cup, Quarter Final tie against Tranmere Rovers. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. It has been a frustrating week or so for the club as after not playing well here in the Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Rossendale United, we have twice been thwarted by the weather first at Stone Dominoes and then at AFC Blackpool. The Rossendale game saw the first period played in driving rain and the conditions appeared to suit Town more than the visitors who looked dangerous on the break. The visitors took the lead from a free kick but Liam Pearson took his account for the season to 20 as he headed a James Croxton cross home to level and Peo also had a valid goal chalked off for off side just before the end of the half. Town threatened for long periods in the second half but were caught twice on the break and it took two late goals from Mike Grogan to earn the hosts a share of the spoils the second coming in the fifth minute of added on time. On behalf of the club I would like to offer our congratulations to centre half Luke Faulker (pictured right) who became a father on Saturday 22nd January and hopefully he will follow in his fathers’ footsteps into the Town line-up in a few years. Congratulations also to Skipper Ben Kay (pictured below) who will be presented with his much delayed November 2010 player of the month award after this evening’s contest. So onto this evening’s contest, we host Tranmere Rovers for only the second contest between the two sides in the Liverpool Senior Cup with the previous meeting coming in the 2nd Round of the 1994/95 competition with Tranmere running out 3-1 victors at Hoghton Road and going on to win the trophy. The tie will be played to a finish this evening with extra time and penalties to decide the contest if needed. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this Liverpool County FA Senior Cup Quarter Final tie against Tranmere Rovers. Let’s hope the Tranmere players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own contingent are treated to an entertaining encounter. It’s been a frustrating week or so for Town with the postponements of our Vodkat League and League Challenge Cup against Stone Dominoes and AFC Blackpool respectively. The trip to Stone Dominoes on Saturday 22nd Jan proved to be a wasted one as the match referee quite rightly deemed the pitched frozen this was a surprise to the Town players and officials arriving at 1.40pm having earlier been told all was well with the playing surface. Saturday’s postponement at AFC Blackpool was a little more expected with overnight temperatures reaching –5 and even the seasiders couldn’t beat the freeze. We now await the re-arrangement of both fixtures. Tonight’s encounter is one of the highlights of the season and I am sure one the lads and backroom staff will be looking forward to competing for a semi-final place. In Town Today . . . Tranmere Rovers Football Club is proud of its history. From fantastic cup runs to the signing of international players, the Club has been witness to and taken part in many memorable events since it was founded in 1884. When Lyndhurst Wanderers and Belmont Cricket Club came together, Belmont FC was formed and under the presidency of James McGaul, the Club won its first match against Brunswick Rovers 4-0 on November 15, 1884. Less than one year later the Club changed its name to Tranmere Rovers Football Club and took to the pitch in blue shirts and white shorts at Steele's Field on Borough Road, Birkenhead. By 1887 Rovers had moved ground to Ravenshaw's Field, which was later renamed Prenton Park, our final home before the switch to the current Prenton Park in 1912. After competing in local leagues including the Liverpool & District League and the Lancashire Combination - a competition the side won its first silverware from in 1908 - the Club made the step up to the Central League in 1919. Following the expansion of the Football League in 1921 to a Third Divisions each for the north and south of England, Rovers were accepted into the Third Division (North) and played their first fixture against Crewe Alexandra at Prenton Park on August 27, 1921. A young Birkenhead player named William Ralph "Dixie" Dean made his debut for Rovers at the age of just 16 years 355 days in 1924, a record that would stand for many decades. Dean scored 27 goals in 30 games for Tranmere, before being transferred across the River Mersey to Everton for ÂŁ3,000, where he scored a British record 60 League goals in 1927-28. In 1934 an FA Cup tie between Rovers and Liverpool was switched to Anfield where 61,036 fans packed into the ground, then a record crowd for a game involving Rovers. One year later, Robert "Bunny" Bell and Tranmere entered the record books when the striker scored nine goals - and missed a penalty - on Boxing Day in a 13-4 victory over Oldham Athletic. Rovers claimed their first ever Championship in the Football League in 1938 when a tally of 56 points was enough to capture the Division Three (North) title and a place in Division Two for the first time. The side lasted just one season at the higher level and was relegated back to Division Three (North) where the Club remained until 1958 when the northern and southern section were combined into national Division Three and Division Four. After just three seasons, Rovers were relegated to Division Four and the Club brought in Scotsman Dave Russell as manager. Russell not only abandoned the use of blue shirts in favour the all-white strip that is still worn today to differentiate Tranmere from Liverpool and Everton, but also introduced a highly successful youth policy. Russell guided Rovers back to Division Three in 1967, a year before a new 4,000 seat main stand was opened and Rovers reached the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time. Three years later the Club's record attendance at Prenton Park was established as 24,424 supporters witnessed Rovers draw 2-2 with Stoke City in the FA Cup. Relegation to Division Four in 1979 put the club in financial difficulties. However, a series of friendly fixtures, a "Save the Rovers" fund and a ÂŁ200,000 loan from Wirral Council managed to secure Tranmere's existence. The goals of Ian Muir were not enough to prevent the debts from mounting in 1987 and after the Club obtained an administration order through the courts, local businessman Peter Johnson took over control and ownership of Rovers, with one of his first changes being the appointment of John King as manager for a second time. . . . Tranmere Rovers After first securing the Club's place in the Football League with a 1-0 victory over Exeter City on May 8 1987, he led the side to a succession of trips to Wembley Stadium. Record transfer fees spent on Jim Steel and Eric Nixon improved the side and Rovers were able to qualify for the Football League Centenary Festival where they defeated both Wimbledon and Newcastle before losing in the semi-finals. The following season Tranmere were promoted to Division Three, and continued the success in 1990 as the club returned to the Twin Towers to defeat Bristol Rovers in the final of the Leyland DAF Cup. A week later, however, Rovers lost out in the play off final against Notts County to miss out on a place in Division Two. The goal was achieved in 1991, with a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers in the play-off final. The side continued to build and announced perhaps the greatest signing ever in the summer of 1991 when former Liverpool striker John Aldridge arrived from Real Sociedad for ÂŁ250,000. Aldridge's goals proved inspirational for the next eight years, with the Republic of Ireland international scoring 170 times for Rovers to put him behind only Ian Muir in the all time scoring charts. In three successive seasons the side was on the brink of a place in the top flight of English football, but each time Rovers were disappointed, an emotion the Club also experienced when losing in the semi finals of the League Cup against Aston Villa and missing out on another match at Wembley. A reconstructed Prenton Park was opened in March 1995, with the all-seater stadium now holding just under 17,000 supporters. Just one year later King was replaced by Aldridge, who took up the role of player manager. After Aldridge retired from football in 1999, he led the Club through a period that will long be remembered for many great cup results. In 1999/2000, victories over a succession of Premiership sides led not only to a place in the sixth round of the FA Cup but a place in the final of the League, or Worthington Cup - the first time Rovers had ever reached a major final. However, after coming from a goal down to equalize, Tranmere eventually lost the match 2-1 against Leicester City. In the following season the Club recorded perhaps its two most impressive results of all. After thrashing Premiership neighbours Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park in the FA Cup, Rovers came from 3-0 down at half time to defeat another Premiership side, Southampton, 4-3 as they again reached the sixth round. Aldridge resigned in 2001 and after relegation to Division Two ended a spell of ten years in Division One, both Dave Watson and Ray Mathias failed to guide the club back to the second tier of English football. In October 2003, Brian Little was appointed manager of Rovers and guided the side from the relegation zone to the brink of the play offs. Little's first season in charge also led to an appearance in the quarter finals of the FA Cup - the third time the Club had achieved the feat in five seasons - where Rovers took eventual finalists Millwall to a replay before going down 2-1 at Prenton Park. In 2004-05, Rovers finished third on 79 points, one short of equalling the Club record. After losing the first leg of the Play Off semi final against Hartlepool 2-0, a packed Prenton Park witnessed a fantastic comeback as Rovers took the tie to penalties. However, the shoot out proved one step too far as the visitors ran out 6-5 winners. At the end of the 2005-06 season, Brian Little left the Club and was replaced by former player Ronnie Moore. In Moore's three seasons in charge at Tranmere, the Club finished 9th, 11th and 7th, just missing the Play Offs in the final season. In June 2009 former England international John Barnes was appointed First Team Manager by Chairman Peter Johnson but after picking up just seven points from the first 11 league games he was replaced by physiotherapist Les Parry. Rovers finished the season in 19th place in League One, avoiding relegation on the final day of the season with a 3-0 victory at Stockport County.

Match Report Saturday 15th January 2011 Vodkat League, Premier Division St Helens Town 3-3 Rossendale United Town put on a late, late show to gain a share of the spoils against basement side Rossendale United at Edge Green Street this afternoon. The early stages saw a brace of goals as first the visitors went ahead after 6 minutes on their first foray forward. A break saw a free kick awarded centrally on the edge of the Town penalty area and Jason Hart stepped up to fire home. The lead was short lived as three minutes later debutant James Croxton delivered a fine cross from the left wing which Liam Pearson headed home to record his 20th goal of the season. The remainder of the half belonged to the hosts as in the pouring rain they took the game to their visitors up the hill. Before the mid-point of the half Croxton and Iain Dyson had warmed the hand of Ben Proctor in the Rossendale goal. A good move from the hosts culminated with Pearson linking with Dyson and the latter tried his luck from the edge of the area but Proctor managed to hold his effort. At the other end Mark Coyne fed Curtis Gallagher, he turned and shot but a good block from Che Morgan averted the danger. Just after the half hour mark Andy Morris found John Elias on the right wing and the full back advanced before unleashing an effort from 25 yards that looked to be arrowing home but for a touch from Proctor which diverted it onto the crossbar. With the interval approaching Town were awarded an indirect free kick in the area after Proctor had picked up a back pass, Morris touched the ball to Pearson and his goal bound effort was in target but deflected by one of the massed ranks of Rossendale defenders gathered on the goal line. The final action of the half saw Town have the ball in the back of the net for the second time. Pearson took advantage of a defensive slip to latch onto a through ball and slot home only to be denied by a dubious offside flag. The first good chance of the second period fell to Michael Grogan as he collected a through ball Croxton and advanced into the area he poked an effort past the advancing goalkeeper which was going just wide of the right hand upright and teammate Dyson tried to divert the effort on target but could not reach ii before it went out of play. Town were rocked to fall behind on 56 minutes when a swift Rossendale counter attack saw a Town free kick into the visitors box cleared and quickly the ball was in the back of the Town net as Andrew Smith played a one two with Hart and his shot from just outside the edge of the box took a deflection on its way into the net. Worse was to come for Town as they fell further behind on 69 minutes another counter attack saw the ball moved up the left flank and Hart centred for substitute Michael Burgos to slid the ball home. Town felt aggrieved to not have been awarded a penalty on 76 minutes as Pearson was downed just inside the area but the hosts were awarded a free kick outside the box from which Dysonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s effort struck the wall. Many will have though that as the game reached the final ten minutes of normal time Town were down and out but the recovery started with six minutes remaining a right wing corner from Croxton was powered home by the head of Grogan and soon afterwards Rossendale were reduced to ten men Chris Hilton was sent off for a reckless challenge and Luke Faulkner joined him a few minutes later for foul and abusive language. The fight back looked to have stalled just short but in the fifth minute of added on time with virtually the last kick of the match Michael Fargher passed to Grogan 12 yards out and he slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net to gain a point and deny the visitors their first win since the start of September. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town AFC – A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . A Brief History Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. Ninth place was achieved in 2009/10 but Bickerstaffe stepped down at the end of the season and Lee Riley was promoted to manager, with Phil Burton (ex-Prescot Cables) as his assistant. A number of new faces have joined the club, most significantly striker Liam Pearson and goalkeeper Dale Newbrook and this combination of youth and experience is looking to improve on last season’s progress. The Knowsley Road ground was vacated in August 2010, prior to its demolition, necessitating a temporary move to share Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street facilities, but Autumn 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club. Vodkat League News BBC Series Filmed at Runcorn Town Runcorn Town's Pavilions ground saw a flurry of activity last week with camera crews from the hit BBC TV series "Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps" filming scenes at the ground. The crews took over the ground for ten hours on Thursday and six hours on Friday as cast members filmed scenes at the ground for the upcoming ninth season of the programme which will be broadcast on the BBC later this year. Club Secretary Martin Fallon explained: "The filming all came about earlier this month with the BBC getting in touch and asking whether they could come down for a look around. They were here a couple of hours having a look at the facilities, with one of the crew particularly fascinated with our fines list which is pinned in the home dressing room for our players.â&#x20AC;? "A few days later they got back in touch and told us that they thought the ground was exactly what they were looking for. Filming began on Thursday which saw scenes filmed on the pitch with a training session for the fictional Runcorn Rovers. Players from our neighbouring club Runcorn Albion lined up alongside some of the cast, with Albion's manager Dan Stubbs even stepping in to be Rovers' manager!â&#x20AC;? "Friday saw scenes being filmed inside the clubhouse, with false walls even erected by the crew. We are delighted that they chose to film at the ground, and are looking forward to seeing the completed scenes later in the year".

Harry to step down at Chadderton Chadderton Football Club Chairman Harry Mayall is to step down at the end of the current season, after over 50 years involvement with the Club. Harry joined the club as a 15 year old player and has been a much valued committee member and Chairman. Chadderton Secretary Louise Robson explained: "Harry has recently retired to the Blackpool area and feels that the time is right for him to step down from an active role in the running of the Club. However, he remains fully supportive of the Club, its Players, Management and Committee. "Harry's retirement from Chadderton is a sad loss to the Club and we would like to thank him for all his hard work and his continued support. "Should anyone be interested in the vacant Chairman's position, or just becoming a volunteer at the Club, they should contact me in the first instance by e-mail at louise-robson@hotmail.co.uk. Vodkat League News Rossy Recruits Gain First Aid Qualification Rossendale United recruits on the Grants For Growth program this week learnt how to save lives by gaining a First Aid at Work qualification. The Grants For Growth fund from Lancashire County Developments Ltd and Lancashire County Council is helping disadvantaged people overcome some of the barriers that they face in moving towards opportunities in Employment, Education, Training, and Volunteering. Seven recruits completed the course held at the 38th Rossendale Scout HQ, and former Rossendale United Chairman Steve Hobson, who managed the course on behalf of Rossendale United Supporters Association said: "Since August 2010 we have been working with a cohort of people who have expressed an interest in volunteering and gaining new skills in their quest for employment. The group has worked on projects at Dark Lane and taken part in various training initiatives, the most recent being this First Aid course.â&#x20AC;? "It has been my pleasure to work with the whole group and watch them develop their skills and confidence throughout the last 4 months."

Liverpool Senior Cup... Six clubs contested the First Round, as firstly Cammell Laird (Evo-Stik League First Division North) kicked off this season’s competition with an emphatic 4-1 win over AFC Liverpool (Vodkat North West Counties League First Division). John Corrigan put Laird’s in the driving seat with just five minutes on the clock, before they doubled their lead just before the half-time break thanks to Danny Andrews. Further goals from Sean Tuck and John Brizzell completed the win, while the visitors did manage a consolation goal through Steve Jones. Two teams from the same division, Warrington Town (Evo-Stik League First Division North) and Skelmersdale United (Evo-Stik League First Division North) couldn’t be separated in either normal time or extra time, drawing 2-2. The visitor’s early lead through Phil Mooney was cancelled out by Sam Finlay on 34 minutes. Ian Latham restored the lead for Skelmersdale on 53 minutes, only for Chris Gahgan to level matters after 78 minutes. With no goals scored in extra time, the tie was decided on penalties with Skelmersdale scoring four times from the spot without reply to earn themselves a place in Round Two. Visitors Marine (Evo-Stik League Premier Division) just edged out Burscough (Evo-Stik League Premier Division) with a late Thomas Moore headed goal to progress Round Two, as both teams battled well in nearmonsoon conditions at Victoria Park. Ashton Town, Bootle, Formby, Prescot Cables and St Helens Town all received to byes - and it was a thrilling tie at Edge Green Street which opened the Second Round stages and saw St Helens Town (Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division) overcome Skelmersdale United, as an extra time goal from Luke Faulkner earned Town a Quarter-final tie with Tranmere Rovers.

... 2010/11 The Story So Far With the hosts having taken the lead as early as the 8th minute through a Mike Fargher free kick after visiting stopper and former Town man Andy Paxton had been sent off for handball outside the area. The two teams then served up a treat over the next 120 minutes. United firstly pulled a goal back on 35 minutes through Steven Akrigg. United then went in front with defender Rob McIntosh’s 65th minute goal, only for Fargher to level the score six minutes from the end with a fantastic strike to take the game into extra time. After the restart the visitors were reduced to nine men when Aaron Turner was sent off at what used to be his home ground having previously played for Ashton Town. It was Luke Faulkner however who had the last say as he bravely headed home on 112 minutes to send the Saints through and picking up a broken nose in the process. With a home tie against Southport at stake in the next round, a goal either side of half-time was enough for Cammell Laird to overcome their hosts Bootle (Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division) at the Delta Taxis Stadium. Danny Andrews scored both goals, the first a penalty on 21 minutes, before doubling his tally on 55 minutes and send Laird’s through to the Quarter-finals. Both Prescot Cables (Evo-Stik League First Division North) and Formby (Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division) made a second attempt to complete their tie, following the postponement of their first meeting due to a frozen pitch – and it was Prescot who ran out eventual 2-1 winners. A tale of two penalties was the feature of this tie, with Formby taking an initial first half advantage thanks to Michael Young’s spot kick after 37 minutes. The tie was levelled however through another penalty through Dale Wright on 68 minutes, before Cables scored again two minutes later through Joe Gibiliru and earn themselves a home tie with Liverpool. After four postponements, due of course to the poor weather of late, Marine and Ashton Town (Vodkat North West Counties League First Division) finally completed their Second Round tie at Rossett Park. Thomas Moore’s goal seven minutes from time was just enough to send Marine through, although a spirited performance from Ashton should have seen them deserve more. It was Moore though who made the breakthrough, finding plenty of space to meet Doherty’s corner with a strong header to put Marine in to the lead. As both sides here tonight approach the Quarter-Finals, tonight’s visitors Tranmere Rovers, Everton, Liverpool (The current holders) and Southport also enter the frame having been exempt until this stage of the competition. All Our Yesterdays . . . This evening’s Quarter-Final tie against Tranmere Rovers is only the second meeting between the clubs in the Liverpool Senior Cup since the competition was opened up to non-league teams in the 1977/78 season. Town appeared in the last Final of the Non-League competition on 10th May 1977 when they went down by the only goal to Marine at College Road. That previous meeting with the Rovers took place on the 9th March 1995 at Hoghton Road, Town losing 1-3 in a Second Round tie. The Town team was Weaver, King, Lowe, McClatchey, Reilly, O’Neill, Bickerstaffe, Knowles, Cooper, Pennington and Williams. Substitutes were Shaw, Hughes and Ogburn and the goal was scored by Knowles after 32 minutes. The attendance was 332, a gate which would be very welcome tonight. Rovers went on to win the Cup that season, their most recent success. Whilst Town have yet to reach the Final of the competition, Rovers have won the Cup on 8 occasions. Their last appearance in the Final was in 2007, when they lost to Everton at Prenton Park. Everton have most successes (45), Liverpool have won the Cup 40 times, Southport 10 and Marine 7. Burscough and Formby are also previous winners, as were the old Bootle club over 100 years ago. Current holders are Liverpool. St. Helens Town have reached the Semi-Final twice before, losing to Kirkby Town by the only goal in April 1987. A year later, they lost 1-3 at Southport at the same stage. The following table shows Town’s record against their various opponents over the last 34 seasons, including November’s success over Skelmersdale United. Liverpool Senior Cup Of all the teams currently competing in the competition, Town have yet to face only Everton and our hosts Ashton Town; Town have yet to beat Bootle, Liverpool, Marine, Southport and, of course, Tranmere. Town’s record victory in the Senior Cup is a 7-1 win over Formby back in November 1986, whilst their heaviest defeat is a 1-5 loss at Prescot Cables in November 1999. The 3-6 reverse two seasons ago at East Villa (the only occasion teams from the Liverpool County Combination were permitted to enter) came after extra-time. Replays are no longer possible, games now being settled by penalties if the scores are level after extra-time. Town have been taken to extra-time on 11 occasions, winning three times (including November’s win over Skelmersdale). Two ties have gone to penalties, Town winning on both occasions and one game (against Liverpool) went to a replay. Of the five ties lost after extra-time, four have come in the last eight seasons, including three in four years between 2006 and 2009. The possibility of a Semi-Final tie against Premier League Everton or Liverpool is sufficient incentive for both teams this evening, so here’s to an entertaining game and may the better team win! Around The Grounds O-Kra Ground - Holbrook Sports Town’s FA Vase run went from the sublime to the ridiculous both on and off the pitch as Town’s trip to Derbyshire was memorable for all the wrong reasons. The twice delayed tie ended up taking place on a Wednesday evening and after an eventful trip to Holbrook. The night started badly with the genius of a Holbrook official who directed the coach to park on a sodden patch of grass with the consequences straight out of “On the Buses” the Town coach had to be extricated during the second half of the match by a local farmers tractor. The ground is situated in a very rural area and the site looks like it has not seen much improvement in recent times. The facilities are split up over the site with the clubhouse being the first building you encounter on the site being on the right as you enter the car park, the clubhouse is well equipped but felt like stepping back in time and entering an episode of Indoor League. Next up is the dressing room building which was compact including the most bizarre sight I have ever seen a sliding door on the referee’s dressing room which was just about large enough to fit the three officials in. Making your way into the ground itself through the entrance box the ground runs lengthwise away from you with the tea hut being on your left as you enter. There is no hard standing up to the ground entrance and inside there was hardcore but no concrete until you reached the pitch surround. The ground is essentially three sided with the area behind the goal at the far end of the pitch being grass and no access past the goal itself as the net extends backwards to the perimeter fence. The left hand touchline has the only cover in the ground in two parts with the first being a Perspex shelter that looked like a smokers shelter outside a public house. A bit further along the touchline is the main stand is a more conventional construction which houses the only seats in the ground. The opposite touchline sees hard standing but no cover and runs for the length of the touchline and the dugouts are on this side of the pitch. This very basic ground would not tick many boxes and often on Vase trips the phase “This would never get in our League” has been muttered, never more so than this visit. Overall Score 2/10

Saint’s Alive . . . A Jew, a Hindu and a Geordie, each travelling alone, arrive at an hotel at the same time. The manager checks the reservations and starts to look concerned, then disappears into the office where they can see him making a number of obviously frantic telephone calls. “Gentlemen,” he says, upon emerging, “I’m afraid there’s been an unfortunate error resulting in a triple booking. However, we have one single room available into which we can squeeze an extra bed, if two of you are willing to share - at a reduced rate, of course - and an old farmer just down the road is prepared to let the third person sleep in his barn. The hotel’s bathroom facilities will be available to that person at any time, and the only charge will be for meals. “I can cope with that,” announces the Jew, turning to the others. “Do you two mind sharing?” After a brief discussion they agree, so they head to the room with their luggage whilst the Jew sets off for the farm. Later that night, the Hindu and the Geordie are just settling down in their beds when there is a knock at the door. They open it to find the Jew standing there with his luggage. “I’m sorry about this, guys,” he says. “The barn was fine, but there’s a pig living in it. I tried my best but, being Jewish, I just didn’t feel comfortable. Could one of you go there instead?” The Hindu and the Geordie exchange glances, then the Hindu says, “Okay, I don’t mind roughing it.” So he gathers together his luggage and sets off into the night. A little while later, just as the Jew and the Geordie are dropping off to sleep, there is another knock at the door. They open it to discover the Hindu standing there, complete with luggage. “You didn’t tell me there was a cow living in the barn, as well,” he says to the Jew. “Being Hindu, I just wouldn’t feel right sharing with such a sacred animal.” Two pairs of eyes then fall upon the Geordie. “Oh, all right,” he growls, with undisguised annoyance. “I’ll sleep in the flaming barn.” He collects his things and heads off to the farm. The Jew and the Hindu chat for a short while, and are about to climb into their beds when there is an urgent knocking at the door. Complaining at the disturbance they slowly open it – and there stand the pig and the cow! A young football fan is very excited when he gets Phil Neville’s autograph after a game. The following week he accosts the player once more for his signature, and yet again after the next two games, at which point Phil recognises him. “This is the fourth game running you’ve asked for my autograph, son.
