Talk of the Town Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Winsford United. Let me open by welcoming the players, management, committee and supporters of Winsford United to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this evening. It has been a while since we all last gathered here at Knowsley Road for the visit of Colne two weeks ago. We were not at our best that evening, the visitors took an early lead before Mike Scully levelled. The turning point in the game was a penalty awarded in the early stages of the second period which saw Graeme McCall sent off and the visitors convert from the spot to take the spoils. We then embarked on an extended road-trip which saw us first visit Nelson the Saturday before last and whilst the performance was not vintage we battled well and a brace of Iain Dyson penalties secured three points after Nelson had taken the lead against he run of play. This was followed by the midweek trip to Atherton LR when a solitary goal from Dyson sent Town back down the East Lancs with all three points. Saturday saw the visit to Cougar Park where Town had never previously won and an entertaining first half saw the teams share five goals. Rob Hanley netted early for Town but the hosts were quickly level, Dyson restored the lead, his 4th goal in the last three matches. Silsden again levelled before Graeme Mitchell found the top corner of the net with a well executed free kick that deserved to be a match winner.

This evenings visitors last couple of results have made commentators sit up and take notice as they dumped Glossop out of the League Cup 5-2 last Tuesday and prior to that had secured a 1-0 home victory against Runcorn. Indeed should Winsford will host the winner of next Monday’s Cup tie between ourselves and Wigan Robin Park in the SemiFinal of the competition. Gary and the lads will know they will have to be on form this evening to take the spoils and make it 4 in a row. Lets get behind Town and hopefully cheer them on to victory. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with tonight’s visitors, friends and rivals Winsford United FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with tonight’s match officials and our own home support have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality during their short stay as well as an entertaining encounter! It’s been a great week for the team on the pitch with three wins in an eight day period securing our position in the chasing pack for a top six finish. All three games have been away from Knowsley Road and started on Saturday 13th March with a visit to picturesque Nelson where we eventually won 1-2 after a lacklustre performance. Iain Dyson netted both goals from the penalty spot and it was the same player who struck the only goal of the game when the lads travelled to Atherton LR last Tuesday. The very uneven LR playing surface caused major problems for both teams so we have to be more than happy with three points and a much improved performance. Last Saturday we made the long trip to Silsden looking to extend our winning run and break the Cougar Park ‘hoodoo’; as in four previous trip the best we’ve taken is a point with the other three games ending in defeat. A win was what we wanted and a win is what we got with an excellent battling performance on a heavy pitch after overnight and early morning rain in West Yorkshire. Town could not have asked for a better start when Rob Hanley slotted home after just three minutes. However the home side hit back to level before Iain Dyson continued his rich vein of form to put Town back in front with a simple tap-in. Once again the home side levelled after Ben Kay was dispossessed just outside the box and it was left to the quality left foot of Graeme Mitchell to curl a free kick into the top corner of the Silsden goal just on the stroke of half time. A goal worthy of winning any game! No-one could have thought the scoring would end there - but it did!! Both Rob Hanley and Iain Dyson had good second half chances to extend Town’s lead and ‘keeper Kevin Woods and his defensive back four did an excellent job in minimising the Silsden chances. Tonight we entertain a resurgent Winsford United who picked up two good home victories in the last week or so as they earned three league points with a 1-0 win over Runcorn Linnets, followed by a 5-2 demolition of Glossop North End in the quarter finals of the Vodkat League Challenge Trophy. Winsford’s improved form coincides with the installation of the new management team of Mike Allcock and Dave Twite - we wish you well but not tonight! Incidentally, should we defeat Wigan Robin Park in next Monday’s quarter final fixture we will travel to Winsford United for a one-off semi-final game on a date yet to be decided. In the other semi-final New Mills will meet the winner of Bootle v Newcastle Town. Although I have noiced some discussion on the New Mills forum which suggests they may have played an ineligible player and therefore there’s always the possibility that Abbey hey will be reinstated! St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season We’ve had a couple of departures in recent weeks, on the player front young defender Peter Birch has left to join Skelmersdale United while off the field we said goodbye to Saints’ Ground Safety Officer Bob Singleton who retired just before our last home fixture versus Colne FC. The club make a small presentation to Bob prior to kick off and we offer our best wishes for the future. I’d like to say a personal thanks to Bob for his assistance and considerable efforts on behalf of the club. Needless-to-say we already have an excellent working relationship with Bob’s replace Bill Harris and we look forward to continuing this! We welcome to tonight’s game Ian Duke and his St Helens Town Juniors Under 9s - I hope you enjoy the game and let’s see if your extra vocal support from the stands can help the lads on the pitch earn three points. After this evening our remaining home league and cup fixture programme shows that we have only four games left at Knowsley Road as part of the 2009-10 campaign. As previously mentioned we will host Wigan Robin Park in the Vodkat League Challenge trophy QF next Monday evening and then we have Premier Division games against Maine Road, Silsden and Flixton. Some of our home support may be aware that discussions have already taken place regarding our ‘home’ for 2010-11. At present nothing is confirmed; our initial discussions regarding a possible ground share at Prescot Cables FC has now fallen through as it became evident that the fixtures of three teams (from different Leagues) would be impossible to manage. We are now in discussions with Ashton Town FC and the Vodkat League which will hopefully see St Helens Town play ‘home’ fixtures at Edge Green Street for part of next season. Our current understanding is that we will start the 2010-11 season here at Knowsley Road and that we are likely to relocate from the beginning of October this year. Following discussions with the Chief Executive at St Helens RLFC it has also been confirmed that we will commence the 2011-12 season at the new Stadium. Finally, many thanks to tonight’s match sponsors Sound Vision Security Limited. I will also take this opportunity to thank all those companies, individuals, etc who have supported the club through sponsorship this season. Of course we are now entering the period when we start to plan for next season and no doubt being away from Knowsley Road will bring some additional challenges and financial pressures. In Town Today . . . Winsford United have a long and proud history, having been formed way back in 1883. In those early days, the club was called Over Wanderers and competed in the Welsh Combination Football League. After a few seasons, the club changed to its present name and its present ground Barton Stadium - although it was called Great Western Playing Field at the outset. The club brought on many good players during this period and after losing several players to Football League clubs, they experienced a somewhat unsuccessful spell that resulted in the club folding. United reformed in 1913, thanks in the main to the then secretary, Mr W H Burning, but it was short lived as World War One broke out. After the cessation of hostilities, United regrouped with a new committee headed by Mr R G Barton (hence Barton Stadium) and the club became a founder member of the Cheshire League, winning the Championship in its second season. That was to be one of the few successes as the Blues struggled to survive both on and off the field. During the War, Barton Stadium was almost stripped bare to aid the war effort. After the war, United became a Limited company and the 1950’s saw the Blues win the Cheshire League Cup three times and a Cheshire Senior Cup victory. In the 60’s and early 70’s the Blues returned to struggling ways with only a rare FA Cup First Round appearance at Peterborough to shout about. United lost the game 4-1. That match acted as a springboard and, under John Williams, Winsford United hit the glory trail. Between 1976 and 1980, the Blues won the Cheshire League title in 1976/77, were runners-up in 1979/80 and set a new record by winning the League Cup four seasons out of five, including a hat-trick of wins (1979 & 80 & 81). They won the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1980 and made an appearance in the quarterfinals of the FA Trophy in 1978. It was in John Williams’ final season that the former Everton and Welsh International goalkeeper, Neville Southall, was sold to Bury for £6,000. A sell on clause later netted United a club record figure of around £30,000 when he moved to Goodison Park. After that halcyon period, United’s fortunes again nose-dived. The Cheshire League merged with The Lancashire League to become The North West Counties League and the Northern Premier League formed a first division in 1987/8. The Blues were invited to join but they never really set the place on fire, seventh place being the best achieved. In January 1991, Winsford were bottom of the NPL First Division and facing a drop back down to the NWCFL. The club then pulled a masterstroke by appointing Mike McKenzie as team manager. They lost only four more games and avoided the drop. A piece of silverware was added when they beat Northwich Vics in the local cup final. In 1991/92 they gained promotion to the Premier Division, finishing as runners

. . . Winsford United FC up and reaching the First Round of the FA Cup for only the third time in the club’s history. Season 1992/93 will go down in United’s folklore as ‘Macca’s’ men won an astonishing five trophies - the NPL Challenge Cup, NPL President’s Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup, Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup and NPL Runners Up Cup. The Blues finished second to Southport and their points total is a record for the most points accrued without winning the title. Sadly the team then broke up in the summer of 1993 when Mike McKenzie was lured into Conference football. Under the management of Dalton Steele, United finished seventh in the league and lifted the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. Season 1998 saw Steele leave for Chorley, taking nearly all the team with him; Mark Came took over and finished the season off with a makeshift side. The club received another tremendous boost early in 1999 when goalkeeper Andy Oakes who had signed for Hull City for a modest fee but with a 25% sell-on clause was signed by Derby County for £480,000 giving Winsford a record amount for a Non-League sell-on clause. Came took the regins for the 1999/2000 campaign but a run of poor results saw Kevin Tully put in the hot seat. What followed was the worst run of results in the club’s history and relegation for the first time. At the start of the 2000/2001 season in Unibond Division One Tully left, and Steve Shaughnessy was appointed Player/Manager. The team performed well throughout the season but administrative errors resulted in 6 points being deducted and instead of finishing in a mid-table spot they were relegated to The First Division of the North West Counties League. It took another 5 seasons before Winsford were able to start the long climb back. Unfortunately during that time they fell another step into NWCFL Division Two. The appointment of Dave Twite and a lot of hard work by the board saw a steady improvement in the fortunes of the club. When Dave left the club, Chris Wilcok replaced him. The 2005/06 season saw Chris and assistant manager John Flanagan led the team to the Division two title. However both Chris and John left the club during the close season to take over at Woodley Sports. Former Town manager Joe Gibiliru took over for the 2007/8 season and Winsford spent the majority of that term in the top half of the table before finishing in 10th position. They club secured some silverware when they won the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup defeating fellow Vodkat League, Division One outfit Congleton Town in the final, running out 2-1 winners with a late goal. Last term saw the Barton Stadium outfit struggle at the wrong end of the table and after survival was secured with a 20th position finish it was decided that the club would part company with manager Gibiliru, the club appointed Tony Ledwards as his successor for the 2009/10. With the club again struggling Ledwards left by mutual consent earlier this month with a team of Mike Allcock and Dave Twite taking up the reigns. Around The Grounds Cougar Park - Silsden AFC Similar to St Helens Town, Silsden AFC have a ground sharing agreement with their local Rugby League team and therefore it was a visit to Keighley Cougars, Cougar Park. When you enter the ground through the turnstiles there is no sign or sight of the green, green grass we play our game on. Straight in front of you is the entrance to the bar which has excellent facilities and a wide range of products available. The only drawback is the lack of the Silsden influence on the walls in the bar as it houses Keighley’s Hall of Fame and various Rugby League memorabilia. The bar is housed under the main stand which has a large capacity but the seats are of the bench variety and with a couple of posts holding the roof up being present they is plenty of neck movement needed when the ball gets close to the main stand touch line. Opposite the main stand sees a large uncovered pitched terrace that runs the whole length of the touchline and to the right of the main stand is another uncovered pitched terrace with a petrol station behind which generously gives that well know smell for your period at that end of the ground. The final stand is situated behind the opposite goal and is almost identical to the stand opposite it with the exception of having a roof and being able to provide cover from the almost constant rain that blighted our visit to the ground this season. Overall it is a very well equipped ground for our standard but will not be on the itinerary for Town next season as Silsden have been given notice by the Cougars that they will not be playing at the stadium next term. St Helens Town AFC . . . Re-formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

. . . A Brief History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-ofWar Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Introduction to the . . . Graeme McCall: Keeper in his second spell at the club after rejoining in the close season. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keeper’s jersey. Kevin Woods: Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones: Commanding centre half now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke: Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Rob Hanley: Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Iain Dyson: Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club’s top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond, had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell: Brother of Graeme, followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Adam Gilchrist: Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield. Marc Stephens: Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Dougie Pitts: Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere.

St. Helens Town squad Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen ‘Ben’ Kay: Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Nick McLoughlin: Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Paul Monteith: Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Peter Birch: Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possesses good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces. Luke Faulkner: Seventeen year old central defender who has recently joined the club from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Lee Riley: Joined the club last season as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables. Gary Bickerstaffe: Rejoined the club late last season as manager having had a previous spell as a player in the 1990s. His arrival last term ensured we staved off relegation comfortably with eight wins from our last 11 league encounters. A mid-field dynamo at the height of his playing career Gary has graced a number of clubs including Congleton Town, Winsford United and Bangor City and has been assistant Manager at both Warrington Town and Congleton and Manager at Garswood United. Other squad players include prolific strikers David Burns and Jamie Foster along with Andy Gillespie and Danny Clarke who have all stepped up from St Helens Town Reserve team football so far this season.

In Other News...... Gingerbreads mourn passing of President It is with great sadness that Grantham Town are mourning the passing of Club President George Freeston. George had been involved at the club for over 60 years, the last ten as President and for five years as a Director before that. A well known figure around the Boardrooms and grounds of both the Southern and Northern Premier Leagues, George was the first person many Directors met when the visited the Meres. George hosted the Boardroom at the Meres for many years, a task he took great pleasure from. “George was more than a friend, it was more like family.” Pat Nixon Club Secretary said. “We go back to the Southern League days when we attended the AGM. George, his wife Marge and I shared some good times down the years. He was a big character at the club and in the Boardroom, especially on match days. George will be missed by everyone at the club and by a lot of people in football as well.” George died in hospital shortly after 10am on Wednesday 17th March. He had been ill for a short time having being diagnosed with cancer just a few weeks ago. Gingerbreads joint manager Wayne Hallcro said. “George was one of those people that no-one had a bad word for. He was always a very generous person, if he could help out in any way, he would do so. He was football through and through and always said things the way he saw them. St Helens Town Juniors . . . The future’s bright for Town Established just three years ago, and now an FA Charter Standard Club, the ‘Town Juniors’ has grown into one of the largest junior outfits in the region. With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Burnley, Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players. The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team (pictured above) under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. Match Report Saturday 20th March Vodkat League Silsden 2-3 St Helens Town The road trip ended with a third consecutive victory and a first win at Cougar Park on what will be Town’s last visit to the venue. The game had a lightening start when Rob Hanley put the visitors into a 3rd minute lead. The striker latched onto a through ball and sent a well struck shot past the home stopper from 8 yards. The lead was to be short lived as Silsden levelled on 8 minutes. Jordan Baker’s header cannoned off the right hand post and was cleared to the edge of the box where Jamie Longley collected it centrally and returned it with interest past Kevin Woods in the Town goal. Town restored their advantage on 14 minutes, Rob Barraclough’s attempted back pass beat Phil Rishton and Iain Dyson nipped in to poke the ball home from close range. Again the lead was to be short lived as Daniel McNulty caught Ben Kay dwelling on the ball advanced on goal and shot past Woods. Another Town move on 37 minutes when Hanley linked with Brian Hatton and the latter’s cross just evaded Dyson on the far post. At the other end Tim Hird collected a loose ball in a dangerous position but was denied by an excellent block from John Elias. A free kick from Marc Stephens on the left edge of the box saw him get the ball up and down over the wall towards the bottom left hand corner of the net, Rishton extended himself well to keep the effort out. The visitors regained the lead just before the interval when Graeme Mitchell was fouled on the right of the area and he picked himself up to curl an excellent effort over the top of the wall into the top right hand corner of the net. The second half was an anti-climax in relation to the previous period. Early chances saw Hanley beat his marker and feed Hatton who had his effort blocked before Dyson did well on the left and cut inside before turning and shooting at the home stopper. Silsden had a brace of chances to level the scores, Barraclough found Damien Whiteoak with a long ball and the strikers effort went over the bar. This was followed when a counter attack saw Chris Simpson beat a defender and round the goalkeeper only to have his shot cleared off the line by Mike Fargher the ball broke to Jordan Barker and he somehow managed to find the stand behind the goal when he looked certain to score. Town thought they had doubled their lead when after soaking up the period of Silsden pressure they countered down the left wing, Hatton fed Dyson and he in turn released Hanley who beat his marker and on the left hand edge of the box u unleashed an effort that went over Rishton struck the inside of the upright and looked to have crossed the line as it went left to right before being cleared. On 76 minutes Elias made another important intervention as he cut out a dangerous ball into the box from the left wing. At the other end Mitchell found Hanley and he in turn fed Stephens his effort went into the side netting. The final chance of the match fell to the hosts as Jordan Barker advanced down the right and sent his cross into the box which found substitute Dan Riley six yards out but the youngster shot over the bar and the points were Town’s. Vodkat League News Bob's Battle Continues League Vice-President Bob Eccles is remaining in upbeat mood as he continues his intensive treatment for cancer. Bob is presently attending the Royal Preston Hospital five days a week up until the 9th April, and says he is progressing as well as can be expected. "I'm very tired and getting a bit of discomfort, but doing well with the radiotherapy", he said. "The staff at the hospital are absolutely fabulous, I can't praise them enough. "The difficult thing is that I feel tired a lot. I'd like to be walking and driving a bit more, but I tire so quickly it's difficult. The hospital come and pick me up and drop me off every day, because I've been told it's too far for me drive when undergoing this sort of treatment". For someone who has always been active and likes walking and gardening, Bob is finding his tiredness extremely frustrating. "I do like walking, and the other morning I decided to set off with my walking stick in the direction of Darwen Tower, which I've walked up to loads of times over the years, but I had to turn back as I was feeling tired soon after I set off. That's one target I've set myself though - once I'm feeling better I'm determined I'll walk right up to the Tower again". In the meantime, Bob spends his time resting at home under the watchful eye of his wife Rosemary, and has been cheered up by the many messages he has received since his illness became known. "It's been great to hear from my many friends and colleagues from around the league who have phoned me, and I'd also like to say a big thank you to everyone who has sent cards and letters. I promise I'll reply to them all when I'm feeling a bit better. "I'm halfway through the treatment now, and once the treatment finishes there will be some assessments and I'll hopefully know the outcome in the middle of May. I'm staying positive about it all and we'll see how I get on".

Vodkat League News New Mills Management Duo Leave New Mills AFC have today announced that management team Tony Hancock and Paul Kirkham have, by mutual consent, decided to leave the club although it has not been an easy decision for them. It is with great regret that Chairman Ray Coverley accepts their decision to leave and on behalf of the club, he would like to thank Tony and Paul for all their hard work and wish them all the best for the future. The club has nothing but praise for the progress they have brought to New Mills AFC over the last four years and can do nothing more than thank them. Tony and Paul joined the club in January 2006 when the team languished at the bottom of the table and that season finished 9th in the league. The following three seasons have brought silverware every year, The Division Two Trophy 2006/2007, Division Two Championship 2007/2008 and last season two trophies, League Runners Up and The League Challenge Cup. Chairman Ray Coverley stated: "New Mills AFC has never in their history collected as much silverware and that is due to Tony and Paul's outstanding commitment. I have always said the best signing we have ever made was Tony Hancock and it will be a long time before the success we have achieved over the last four years is repeated. "The quality of players that they have brought to the club have been a pleasure to watch, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tony and Paul for everything they have achieved at Church Lane". Saint’s Alive . . . Unbeknown to their families, a crab and a lobster are secretly courting. Eventually the lobster tires of all the deceit and tells her father, who demands the relationship must end. “It can never work,” he bellows in outrage. “Crabs walk sideways and we walk straight.” “Please, Daddy” she begs him. “Just meet him once - I know you’ll grow to like him.” Seeing how upset she is, her father finally agrees and she runs off to share the good news. The crab is so excited he decides to surprise his beloved’s family, and practises morning and night until he can walk straight instead of sideways. On the big day, he walks the entire way to the lobster's house as straight as a die. Standing on the porch, the lobster’s father sees the crab approaching and summons his daughter. “I knew this was a mistake,” he yells. “Just look - here comes that damned crab of yours, and he’s obviously drunk!” Sitting in an empty bar, an armless man orders a beer. When his drink is served to him, the man asks the bartender to take the money from his pocket, as he can’t get it himself. The bartender obliges, and the man then asks for the glass to be lifted to his lips and tipped for him to drink. The bartender does as requested, then comments to the man how difficult it must be having no arms and having to ask people for help with everything. “Yes, it’s a bit embarrassing at times,” says the man. “By the way, where is your toilet?” “Well,” says the bartender. “The nearest one is in the petrol station, just down the road.” A defender tackle.
