Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Atherton LR. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us at our new home, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. Our previous game here at Edge Green Street on Saturday saw us advance to the second round of the FA Vase after a battling victory over Vodkat League, First Division Oldham Boro. We always knew it was going to be a tough contest we were not mistaken and whilst not playing at the top of our game we managed to carve out a couple of openings and went in at the interval a goal to the good thanks to the finishing of Liam Pearson. It looked to be our day when we Liam Pearson again netted, this time early in the second half, to make it 2-0 but the two goal advantage was to be short lived and Oldham Boro converted a penalty just 13 minutes later. Things got worse for Town when goalkeeper Dale Newbrook had to be replaced due a shoulder injury with 15 minutes remaining and skipper Ben Kay took up his position between the sticks but was largely untroubled for the remainder of the contest and the hosts held on to make it to the Second Round of the competition for the first time since 2005. Tonightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s visitors also took on a Vodkat League First Division outfit over the weekend in the FA Vase as Runcorn Town were the visitors to Crilly Park on Friday evening and despite taking an early lead the hosts found themselves 3-1 down early in the second half. Despite pulling a goal back with half an hour remaining they could not break down the visitors defence and exited the competition. LR have had a good start to the season having won five of their first nine league contests to date and will be looking to make it six this evening. Town will also be looking to add three points to their tally and rise up the table from their currently lowly position which does not accurately reflect the FA Carlsberg Vase performances we have being putting in during 2nd Round Proper Draw games. We need to kick start our league involving Vodkat League teams campaign and three points and a good Saturday 13th November 2010 performance this evening could be the idea way to do that! Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street, home of Ashton Town FC, for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends from Atherton Laburnum Rovers. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with our own home support, enjoy their visit as well as an entertaining encounter. The Town lads made a good start to their life at ‘Edge Green Street’ with a solid, if not spectacular, victory over Oldham Boro in the FA Carlsberg Vase 1st Round last Saturday. We always knew it would be a tough afternoon as our Division One opponents had nothing to lose against higher level opposition. Boro battled throughout and belied their league standing but goals either side of half time from Liam Pearson, bringing his tally to 12 for the season, were enough to see Town through. Both sides created a number of chances throughout the game; Oldham hitting the bar in the first half before giving themselves a lifeline with a 64th minute penalty. Town later lost ‘keeper Dale Newbrook with a shoulder injury but captain Ben Kay stepped up and he wasn't really troubled during the final proceedings. The draw for the FA Vase was completed yesterday lunch time and Town have been drawn away to Winterton Rangers of the Koolsport Northern Counties East League Premier Division (same as Nostell Miners Welfare). The two teams have met once before, an FA Vase 1st Round encounter back in 2000 when Town ran out 3-2 winners after extra time in North Lincolnshire. Our time ‘out of Town’ will no doubt be a difficult one, especially the next few weeks and months as the lads settle into a new routine and every game feels like an away fixture. I would encourage all Town fans to spread the word about our relocation - monthly match posters are available from committee members - as we suspected we have already seen a dip in numbers through the turnstiles. Anyone wishing to travel to home or away games should contact me on 07976 059404 and the club will make every effort to arrange transport. Our main sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool have agreed to provide cars for Saturday games which will allow us to arrange pick-up/drop off points in St Helens. In the league last night saw New Mills extend their lead at the top of the Premier Division tables as they defeated Flixton 1-0. Congratulations go to Marc Stephens (pictured right) who was voted the St Helens Town Player of the Month - and he will go forward as the club’s nomination for the Vodkat League Premier Division Player of the Month. Saturday next will see Town travel to Padiham in the Vodkat League before returning to Ashton next Tuesday evening when Maine Road FC will be our visitors. In Town Today . . . Atherton LR were founded in 1956 as Laburnum Rovers when a group of local lads wanted to start their own team. They asked Joe Riley, elder brother of one of the lads, to help them and by the end of December 1956 they were ready to go. They were admitted into the local Briarcroft Junior League, despite the season being well under way. A decision had to be made after that first season whether the club would continue to struggle and just be a fun thing for the lads, or whether they wanted to be more successful. It was decided that they wanted to improve which meant bringing in some new faces and unfortunately some of the lads who helped start the club had to go. Success followed almost immediately as the club progressed through local Leagues and won cup competitions and Joe was persuaded to carry on into Senior Football. After a spell in the Leigh League, the club joined the Bolton Combination. More success followed, but the ground at Hag Fold prevented any further advancement, so a farmers field was found and despite footpaths criss-crossing it and duck ponds either side, hard work by everyone at the club turned this unpromising field into a football pitch. In 1966 the club moved to their new ground and were able to take their place in the First Division of the Bolton Combination. Jack Crilly succeeded Joe as Chairman and worked tirelessly for the club, supervising the erection of new changing rooms (an improvement on the old air-raid shelter they had been using) and a small social club. Jack died suddenly in 1980 and as a tribute to the work he did for the club, the ground was renamed Crilly Park. In 1980 the club joined the non-league pyramid when their application to join the Cheshire County League was accepted. A stipulation of the League was that the town had to be in the clubs name, so links with the past were retained with the new name of Atherton Laburnum Rovers. In 1982 the club became founder members of the North West Counties League, being placed in Division Two where they remained until the League was reorganised in 1987 when their facilities saw them placed in Division One. Ground improvements continued, including the erection of floodlights in 1989, allowing the club to enter the FA Cup for the first time and in 1991 the changing rooms and clubhouse were completely rebuilt. In 1992/93 the team won the League title with 106 points from 42 games and had a run of 39 consecutive games unbeaten in the League. They also won the NWCL Championship Trophy. However, there was disappointment as promotion to the UniBond League was denied them because of grading requirements. Undaunted, the team repeated their double the following season and this time were promoted. Also in 1993/94 Atherton LR reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase where they lost in a replay to Diss Town. Two good seasons in the UniBond League saw the club make steady progress, but then financial trouble struck and Action from Atherton LR v Ashton Athletic the club were relegated for the first time in their history. A change of regime at the club seemed to offer hope for the future, but following a tip-off from the officials of Haslingden football club, LR's ex-officials found that bills hadn't been paid and the bank was on the verge of Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . Atherton Laburnum Rovers closing the club down. Fortunately the previous Directors shares had not yet been bought so they were able to retake control of the club and after much hard work in co-operation with the bank and various creditors, managed to keep the club afloat while the debts were paid. With little money to spend, two seasons of struggle followed and culminated in the clubs second relegation, this time to the NWCL Division Two. However, the appointment of Alan Lord as manager in November 2000 brought about a remarkable transformation and after nine straight victories, they won promotion back to Division One in their final game of the season. In November 2002 Tom Foster and Denis Haslem took over as joint managers and set about rebuilding the team as all but three first team players left the club within two weeks. After three months of struggle, the new team ended the season unbeaten in their final eight games to earn a mid-table position. Denis Haslem moved on in the summer of 2003 to take over the helm at West Lancs side Stoneclough and the experienced Ian Street joined the club as assistant manager. 2003/04 season saw LR finish in a comfortable mid-table position without a relegation fight for the first time in a while and the club picked up two pieces of silverware. LR won the Goldline Trophy and a few weeks later the Bolton Hospital Cup both at the Reebok Stadium. LR successfully defended the Goldline Trophy in season 04/5 and the club finished in 15th place. However Foster and Street left the club at the end of the season. Eventually after some traumatic twists Mike Lester and Darren Ford became the mew management team at Crilly Park. Last term saw dramatic events at Crilly Park as the side had no less than four managers taking the helm. The cub only just managed to avoid relegation after some good results early in the season. Mark Cox was appointed manager in the summer for the LR Golden Jubilee season. However drama is never far away at LR and he quit in February 2007 and Roy Sweeny was handed the reigns with Robert Hope as assistant and after a successful run in the club finished in 16th place. Hopes were high for the new season but the expected results failed to materialise and Sweeney resigned at the start of December due to pressures away from the field. Malcolm Anderton was put in temporary charge and Stuart Humphries was appointed for the final two months of the season and LR did just enough to maintain their top flight status. Dave Hughes was appointed first team manager for the 2008/9 season with the remit of building the foundations of a stable future for the club after three seasons of trials and tribulations both on and off the field and the club had an excellent first term under his leadership as he guided them to a comfortable mid-table finish and they secured silverware in the shape of the Goldline Trophy beating Stoneclough in the final at Boltonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Reebok Stadium. Last season saw the Crilly Park outfit struggle at the wrong end of the table and finish just outside the relegation places in 20th position. Hughes shocked the club by resigning after they had secured an excellent home victory over Bootle in September 2010. Hughes was to take up the reigns as assistant manager to Paul McNally at Runcorn Linnets. The club moved quickly at appoint a successor and promoted from within as Glenn Moses was giving the job having been at the club for three seasons formerly as head coach and assistant manager. Match Report Saturday 2nd October 2010 - FA Vase, 1st Round; St Helens Town 2-1 Oldham Boro St Helens Town’s adventure in the FA Vase continued as they overcame a resolute Oldham Boro this afternoon to advance to the 2nd round of the competition for the first time since 2005. The early stages saw the hosts with plenty of possession but without testing the visiting stopper, the first chance of the match fell to the visitors as on a counter attack the ball broke to Shaun Roscoe whose effort from the edge of the box went wide of the right hand upright. Town’s first moment of goalmouth danger came on 14 minutes when a free kick from Ben Kay was met by Liam Pearson who beat his defender and found Michael Kavanagh and his effort was blocked by a vital challenge from Andrew Smith. At the other end an Oldham corner almost saw them break the deadlock as the ball was collected by Roscoe on the edge of the area and his first time shot looked like a goal but Dale Newbrook extended himself well to block the shot and the loose ball was cleared by Dave Garnell. With a quarter of the match gone Town worked the ball down the right Pearson linking with Mike Deakin with the latter’s cross coming off Smith’s outstretched hand but the host being awarded a corner rather than a spot kick. Further Town pressure saw shots from Karl Aldridge and September player of the month Marc Stephens going wide of the target and Paul Cliff headed a cross over the bar. A spell of constant Town pressure just after the half hour mark culminated in the hosts opening the scoring, a free kick found Pearson and he turned his defender inside the area before firing home past the keeper on the front post. Oldham could have levelled before the interval when Roscoe made his way through some flimsy Town challenges to unleash a shot from 25 yards which beat Newbrook but struck the crossbar and rebounded for the keeper to collect gratefully. With the teams returning to the field after the interval and the hosts one goal to the good, and early chance saw Mike Kavanagh get to a cross before the goalkeeper but he could not steer his effort on target. The lead was doubled 6 minutes into the period when Pearson pressed an error from Lee Deakin and advanced goalwards beating defenders before firing home into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Oldham spurned a chance when Andrew Kremner’s shot from the right of the area was straight at Newbrook in the Town goal. Just before the hour mark Town almost made it 3-0 when Kavanagh’s cross found Iain Dyson who struck his effort back across goal beating the goalkeeper but just going the wrong side of the right hand upright. Oldham got a foothold back in the match on 63 minutes when Kremner got into the box and went down under challenge from Newbrook the referee pointed to the spot and skipper Damien Schofield converted from 12 yards. Three minutes later the visitors thought they were level Roscoe shot from the edge of the box and Newbrook got down smartly to keep the effort out but the rebound broke to Kremner who turned it home only to see the assistants flag raised for offside. Town’s fortunes took a turn for the worse when goalkeeper Newbrook had to be replaced due to shoulder injury and with no replacement stopper on the bench skipper Ben Kay donned the gloves and took over in goal. Moments later he was being rounded by Jerome Bryson but Mark Evans came to the rescue clearing the shot off the line. At the other end Pearson had a central free kick from the edge of the box tipped over the bar. The final chance of the game fell to the visitors in the fifth minute of added on time. A central free kick was taken by Thomas Hughes in a dangerous position but thankfully for Town the ball struck the ball of the defensive wall and was cleared so the hosts advanced into the next round and await their fate in Monday’s draw. Steve Prescott’s Engage Mutual Challenge The Steve Prescott Foundation is delighted to announce its next amazing challenge - five marathons in five days ahead of this year’s Engage Super League Grand Final. Of these five marathons, Steve Prescott himself will run four in four days, with the fifth marathon being opened up to fans on the day of the final. The inspirational Steve Prescott MBE, is keen to add this challenge to an already impressive portfolio of physical feats and hopes that fans will get behind his latest fundraising endeavours. This epic challenge aims to raise a significant amount of funds for The Foundation Steve set up back in 2007, benefiting two charities close to his heart; The Christie Hospital in Manchester, where he receives treatment for a rare cancer, and the Try Assist Fund which supports those seriously injured whilst playing rugby league. Following his ultra marathon, Steve is challenging rugby league fans to run a collective 26 miles of their own in the Grand Final Fanzone at Old Trafford. Engage Mutual will be hosting this fifth marathon in their Health & Fitness area on Saturday 2nd October, where a treadmill will be in place for fans to run a sponsored leg of the final marathon. To be involved, participants need to sign up on the SPF website, www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk. Spaces are limited, but there are other ways to show support for the event, either by cheering the various runners on before they head to their seats for the Engage Super League season finale, or by making a donation. Win a Brand New Toyota Aygo with St Helens Town . . . St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. Town Pen Pictures . . . Dale Newbrook: Signed at the start of the 2010-11 season as cover from Kevin Woods but has already made the number one jersey his own. Played against Town for West Didsbury and Chorlton FC in a pre-season friendly fixture. A great shot stopper who commands his area extremely well. Vodkat League Premier Division 'Goalkeeper of the Month' for August 2010 Kevin Woods: Very good young goalkeeper who is now in his third season with the club. Last season he battled for the keeper's jersey with Graeme McCall and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Stephen Ben Kay: Another player starting his second season with the club after signing from Wigan Robin Park. Can play centre back or midfield and has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. The 2009-10 Players Player of the Year and rewarded with the captaincy for season 201011. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club in 2008-09 season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. John will be looking to improve his disciplinary record. Iain Dyson: Former Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club's top goalscorer last term for the third time in four seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Luke Faulkner: Twenty two year old central defender who joined the club last season from MidCheshire outfit Garswood United. Liam Pearson: Joined in the summer from Ford Motors, a prolific goal scorer in the Liverpool County Premier League. A big strong centre forward who is good in the air and with the ball at his feet and he will prove to be a handful for opposition defenders. Paul Cliff: Another young player who joined during the close season from neighbours Prescot Cables where he was a regular in their Unibond side. Paul plays on the left wing and has an eye for goal as his pre-season games showed. Marc Stephens: Young midfield player who has had a fine couple of seasons at Town. Signed in the summer of 2008 he came into his own when moved into central midfield where his movement and passing ability are a real quality. He has had a excellent start to the 2010-11 season with goals being added to his repertoire! Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club last season. After some early substitute appearances he's now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who's good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club last season after spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR and Wigan Robin Park. Liam Arnold: A new signing from local outfit Windle Labour FC where he was top scorer in the Warrington Premier Division in season 2009-10. Good pace and creativity have been a highlight of his early season form for Town Lee Owens: A strong and deceptively agile central defender who joined from Prescot Cables during the summer 2010. sending quality crosses into the box. The 2009-10 Young Player of the Year. Karl Aldridge: Right sided defender or midfield player who is another of the crop of summer signings. Now a regular following a pre-season shoulder injury which kept him out of the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opening games of the season. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. He has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian spent much of last season recovering from injury. Former Stockport and Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Dave Garnell: Tall and strong central defender who also has an eye for goal. A great presence in both penalty boxes, signed this summer from Prescot Cables. Daniel Mahoney: A goal-scoring midfielder who joined from Chester FC in September 2010. Good pace and excellent on the ball. His dad Mac also played for Town in the 1990s.

Phil Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington two seasons ago for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Lee Riley: Joined the club two seasons ago as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition to the club, stepping up to become manager this season. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables and also had a playing spell with Town. Phil Burton: Joined the club during the close season as Assistant Manager to Lee Riley having been manager of the Prescot Cables Reserves. Vodkat League News Managerial Vacancy At Rossendale United Following Saturday's defeat at home to local rivals Bacup Borough, the Board of Rossendale United decided to relieve Manager John Hughes of his duties with immediate effect. Chairman Steve Hobson said: 'We have given John a 'fair crack of the whip' but unfortunately we are not seeing the progress, on the field of play, we and our supporters demand. John has worked tirelessly on behalf of Rossendale United for the past 16 months and, if success was guaranteed purely on effort alone, we would be a Football League club by now. "Unfortunately that's not the case and we, the Board, feel change is needed. We wish John every success in the future and hope that he will always be the good friend to us he has been during his tenure as Manager." The club is in no hurry to make an appointment, and an announcement will be made in due course as to who the successful applicant will be.

Lynch moves quickly to replace recent departures Evo-Stik Premier League Marine have signed three new defenders following the departures recently announced by manager Kevin Lynch of Joe McMahon, Tony Davies and Ian Lathom. Joining the Mariners are centre halves Bee Ami, 20, from Accrington Stanley, Dean Siadankay, 25, from Northwich Victoria and Paul Lundon, 23, from Prescot Cables and formerly Skelmersdale United. The changes follow poor defensive performances, especially at the Arriva Stadium, where Marine have conceded 13 goals in 5 league games and lost three out of five. Marine Chairman Paul Leary said, “It is important that we turn in some level of consistency in defending and our dismal home record so early in the season has been costly. The signing of these players will hopefully help to provide Kevin with a regular back four, something that we have not had so far and I welcome Paul, Dean and Bee to Marine.” Manager Kevin Lynch added, “Centre halves Dean and Bee will both be eligible to make their debuts tomorrow in the league game at Retford United whilst Paul has already made his debut for Marine last week. Dean is a big centre half with pace and strength whilst Ben is a strong tackling defender. Paul can play both sides of defence and is very good on the ball. Whilst the departure of McMahon, Lathom and Davies, to some fans, has been unpopular I need to have more stability and an improvement in our defending and the signing of the three new players will help me to do that.”

Around The Grounds The Wooders - Garswood United The pre-season travels for St Helens Town took us on the short trip to Garswood United’s Wooders ground situated between St Helens and Wigan and as is relevant this season halfway between Knowsley Road and Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground. Garswood play in the Cheshire League First Division (formerly the Mid Cheshire League) but struggled last term and finished bottom of the pile. Upon entering the facility’s car park which got jam packed the closer it became to kick off the clubhouse is off to your right with the left hand side of the pitch directly in front of you. There is hard standing and post and rail around the length of the pitch with the only cover and seating being in a small stand in front of the clubhouse itself. All four sides of the pitch are available to view the game from but the far side as you enter the ground is quite overgrown and not recommended unless you are a David Bellamy type and enjoy undergrowth and insects! The clubhouse is very modern and served a variety of refreshments at reasonable enough prices. The home side put up a good fight against their must illustrious neighbours earning a creditable 0-0 draw on what looked like a good surface for the level they play at.

Vodkat League News Another Great North Run Success For John A few weeks back we reported that John Beswick, a former Barnoldswick Town groundsman, was taking part in the Great North Run on the 19th September as a fundraiser for Town player Ash Alderson, who broke his leg in a pre-season game against AFC Fylde. John, known to everyone at the club as Bezzie, completed the run in a time of 1 hour 57 minutes and 22 seconds, and in the process raised £300 for Ash through sponsorships from people within the club. His overall position in the race was 9,970th out of around 54,000 runners, and he finished 119th in his age group. It's not the first time that John has undertaken a run to raise funds for a Barnoldswick Town player. He took up running some years ago as a means of keeping fit, and then embarked on running the Pendle Grand Prix, which is a set of ten 10k races around the area. While doing this in 2007, one of the Barnoldswick Town players at the time, Darren Smith, suffered a brain embolism whilst playing and was rushed to hospital from the ground. As Darren was a self employed builder, John thought it would be a good idea to take part in the Great North Run to raise some cash for him. This was quickly organised, and the amount of money raised was an impressive £1300, which was distributed to Darren, Children's Leukemia, a local cancer group BOSOM friends, a Speech Therapy organisation and to Elland Hospice. Darren subsequently donated the money to the hospital that had treated him, and he made a complete recovery although he can never play football again. This season, when Ash Alderson suffered his injury, John decided to dust down the running shoes again as Barnoldswick Town programme editor Peter Naylor explained: "Although John had been dogged with niggling injuries, he decided to enter the Great North Run again to raise some money for Ash. It was a great performance from him, and his efforts are admired by everyone at the club. "Last Saturday, Ash was at the ground minus his crutches for the first time, so thankfully the healing process is working, and we were able to present him with his cheque for £300." One of Town's sponsors, 'The Cellar Bar', donated a prize of a beer and wine hamper for the person who got nearest to the time John would post for his run. Joanne Bowditch won the prize, being only 14 seconds inside John's time of 1:57:27. Saint’s Alive . . . A husband and wife set off on holiday by car, with a very long journey ahead of them. After several hours on the road they’re too tired to continue, and decide on a rest break. They stop at a large hotel and book a room, with the intention of grabbing just four hours sleep before moving on. Suitably refreshed after their short nap, they go to the front desk to check out and are handed a bill for £200. “That’s outrageous!” exclaims the husband. “I grant you that’s it’s a nice hotel, but just four hours in a small and sparsely furnished room doesn’t justify this charge.” The desk clerk looks down his nose at the husband. “The £200 is not just for the room, sir,” he says in a haughty and condescending manner. “It is the standard rate and includes use of all the other facilities available to our guests.” The husband is having none of it and insists on speaking to the manager, who is duly summoned and listens to the complaint with barely disguised boredom. “The hotel has a twenty-five metre swimming pool and a four-star restaurant, use of which are included in our standard rate,” explains the manager. “But we’ve only been here four hours and haven’t even seen them, let alone used them,” pleads the husband. “Nevertheless, they are available and you could have used them,” says the manager. “And we provide live entertainment every evening with some of the best cabaret acts around,” he continues. “Top stars from New York, Las Vegas and London’s West End perform here regularly.” “We’ve only been here four hours and haven’t seen them, either,” repeats the husband. “As I said, sir – the entertainment is available each and every day, so you could have.” The manager goes on to list all the other facilities on offer – eighteen hole golf course, fitness suite, sauna, hairdresser, beauty salon – you name it, the hotel has it available. The husband points out that he and his wife have used none of them, whilst the manager is equally adamant that they were there for their benefit and they could have used them. Eventually, the husband accepts that all his arguments and pleas are going to be rebuffed. “Okay,” he sighs. “Give me a pen.” He writes out a cheque and hands it to the manager. “Excuse me, sir,” says the manager upon examining the cheque. “This is only made out for £80, and we have already explained at great length that our standard rate is £200.” “That’s right,” says the husband. “I’ve charged you £120 for sleeping with my wife – that’s our standard rate.” The manager bristles with indignation, his face reddening with anger and embarrassment. “I can promise you, sir, that I have not slept with your wife,” he protests. “I know,” says the husband, smiling. “But she was here and you could have.” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
