Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Congleton Town. I hope our visitors had a good journey to St Helens, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. Tonight sees the third of a stretch of five home games with Glossop North End visiting in FA Cup action on Saturday (please note the early kick off time of 12.30pm) and the following weekend sees further cup action this time in the shape the FA Vase tie against Brodsworth Welfare of the Northern Counties League, Division One. This run could be broken should we draw in the FA Cup with Glossop as a replay should it be needed would be on Wednesday 1st September. I am sure that most of the squad will be eager to get back on the pitch here at Knowsley Road to right the wrongs of Saturday’s poor performance here against Barnoldswick Town. Whilst we looked comfortable for most of the first half of the contest without a cutting edge in the final third a defensive mishap gifted the visitors a goal their play did not merit and they lifted themselves for the second half and caught out the hosts twice in the latter stages to register their first win in the Vodkat Premier League and by the way they celebrated I would suggest the best result in their history so far. The new club shop will be open just outside the main stand this evening with Town merchandise on sale including Replica Shirts, Mugs, Fridge Magnets, Key Rings, Mouse Mats, Coasters, Money Boxes, Glasses, Calendars, Enamel Badges and old Town Programmes from previous seasons, take a couple of minutes to have a look and maybe find something you will like! Onto this evening’s visitors have had an excellent start to the season having a 100% record with three wins in the league and having thumped Daisy Hill 8-0 in the FA Cup. So a difficult task is in store of St Helens Town tonight if we are to get anything out of the contest. The draw for the Liverpool Senior Cup has been made and Town have been drawn at home to Warrington Town with a fixture date yet to be arranged. Lets get behind the lads this evening and hopefully cheer them on to victory. Enjoy the Game . . . Jeff Voller Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Season 2010-11
Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends Congleton Town Football Club. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with tonight’s match officials and our own fans, have had a safe journey and enjoy our hospitality along with an entertaining encounter. Last week proved to be one of mixed performances and emotions. Firstly, Tuesday evening saw the lads progress in the FA Cup in a thrilling manner when Nostell Miners Welfare were edged out 5-4 on penalties after the replay finished 2-2 after extra time. The victory should have been the platform for progress as Barnoldswick Town were our first time visitors for a league encounter on Saturday - what a disappointment it turned out to be! While the lads had plenty of the ball during the opening half we failed to really test the ‘Barlick’ ‘keeper and a mistake just on half time ensured our visitors would have a lead they never looked like surrendering. The second half was a no-show from Town’s perspective and despite changes in personnel and formation we never looked like we were ‘up for the battle’. Our visitors constantly benefitted from some sloppy Town play and with their confidence high earned two late goals and their first win of the campaign. Tonight will prove to be another tough encounter and manager Lee Riley will be insisting on an improvement in both effort and application, especially as Congleton arrive with a 100% record to date. Our games against the ‘Bears’ are usually good encounters and last season saw both clubs win their home fixture - let’s hope that run continues. One run we will be hoping doesn’t continue is Glossop North End’s recent form against us as they make their way to Knowsley Road this coming Saturday for a 12.30pm kick off in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. North End hit us for five on both our league meetings last season and with £1500 prize money it’s vital we put in a decent performance. To be fair Glossop have also had a mixed start so Saturday will be very interesting with a home tie against Mossley or Witton Albion awaiting the winners. Off-the-field Saturday sees our first 100+ Club draw - at the moment we have just short of 100 numbers sold and any new members will be most welcome. Remember £5 per month gets you the chance of winning three prizes from the £500 prize fund. Enjoy the game and let’s be positive in our support of the players. Please join us in the Black Bull after the game for the usual Man of the Match presentations. In Town Today . . . Events which led to the formation of Congleton Town Football Club, began in the 1890’s, the St James’ North Street School amalgamated with another local club, the Messrs Pointons Joiners Shop. They played on West Heath before housing was built in that area, and then became Congleton Hornets Football Club. The Hornets played at the Willow Street ground famed in Congleton, and competed in the South Cheshire League and recorded its’ record league win, 10-0 against Audley in the 1897/98 season. Congleton Town Football Club succeeded the Hornets in 1901, playing in the Crewe and District League for four years, the first three of which saw the club lift the League Championship. The Club then moved into the North Staffordshire League in 1905, and won the League Championship in the 1919/20 season. The following year they joined the Cheshire County League, regarded at the time as the best League outside the Football League. The following season they finished runners-up and won the coveted Cheshire Senior Cup in their first appearance in the Final. The Club then suffered a barren spell until the Senior Cup was won again in 1938. Success after the War did not descend on Booth Street until the 1971/72 season when the Club, now playing in the Mid-Cheshire League, won the League Cup after being runners-up in the League both that season and in the previous season. Three Mid-Cheshire League Championships then came to Booth Street in the 1973/74, 1975/76 and 1977/78 seasons, together with the League Cup and the Cheshire Saturday Cup. Although this was the most successful period of the Club’s history as regards silverware, the truly successful period began in the 1981/82 campaign, when the Second Division of the Cheshire County League was gained on the last game of the season, and Town were narrowly beaten to the Cup by Macclesfield Town. That was the last season of the Cheshire County League before the North West Counties League came into existence. As founder members of this new League, Congleton finished the first three campaigns in mid-table and then were narrowly beaten to the Championship by Clitheroe on goal difference in the 1985/86 season. The Club then had its, application to join the Northern Premier League rejected, but joined the higher league when the First Division of the NFL was formed in 1987. The highlight of the 1989/90 season was to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Although beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra, that achievement re-kindled local interest in the Club upon which its management hoped to build. The Final of the NPL’s First Division Cup was also reached in this season, but the “Bears” were beaten 5-1 on aggregate by Harrogate Town. The “Bears” enjoyed exciting times in the First Division, initially finishing in mid-table but then, playing to avoid relegation as the seasons come to a close. Between 1993 and 1997 a new Board of Directors brought financial and managerial stability to the Club, whilst the present Directors aim to continue this work and improve the Club’s fortunes in the years ahead. The club had a good season in 1999/2000 but fell away badly the following year. Despite reaching a best ever 4th Round of the FA Trophy before defeat by Worksop Town, they struggled badly in the league. The club appointed Sean Connor as manger in February 2001 but he could not prevent them finishing bottom of the UniBond League and relegation became a reality. The early season of 2001/02 saw the club take just 9 points from 17 league matches and early exit from FA Cup and FA Vase. Sean Connor was replaced as manager by Kevin Langley, ex Everton and Man Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . Congleton Town City. The club made a fine revival and had reached virtual safety before Langley’s shock move to Kidsgrove Athletic. Bryan Griffiths took over as manager and gained the points to make safety a certainty and stake a strong claim to keep the manager’s job. He was formally appointed at the end of the season. Gary Bickerstaffe joined him as assistant and in September 2002 he invited Kevin Langley to return as a player and to help with coaching. When Griffiths left to join Rossendale Utd, Kevin Langley was reappointed as manager and Mark Cox joined to complete an experienced management team. Off the field the club continued to enjoy growing support from sponsors and steady improvements in its facilities, culminating with the signing of a two-year deal with Macclesfield based SSG Group of Companies during the summer of 2003. During the summer of 2002, the clubhouse underwent major refurbishment and is seen by the club as a major step towards increasing its revenue potential. The changing facilities were redesigned and upgraded. The team reached the fifth Round of the FA Vase, beat three higher league sides in reaching the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, the semi-finals of the Cheshire Senior Cup and the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. In all cup competitions other than the FA Cup, only the eventual finalists beat the Bears. With promotion missed, a number of players left the club in the summer of 2004 leaving Kevin Langley with the task of rebuilding the side for the 2004/05 campaign. After a poor start and early exits from all major cup competitions, Karl Wilcox replaced Kevin Langley after he resigned in November 2005. In a further twist in an already difficult season, Karl Wilcox resigned after 11 defeats in 12 games. Paul Moore was appointed for the remainder of the season and he guided the team to safety before confirmation of his appointment signalled the start of rebuilding of a side aiming to challenge for honours. 2005/06 started brightly with SSG adding a third year to its already valuable sponsorship, but swift exits from cup competitions were a disappointment. After many changes in personnel, the team settled to end the season with a creditable run in that held promise for 2006/07. The start of a football academy for 6-15 year olds and the introduction of a reserve side were positive steps to help build the teams of the future. 2006/07 has seen new sponsors STD Limited, part of the Pallex network, they entered a 2-year deal which they then extended a further year. The supporters trust provided kit for the reserve team. After a steady start to the 2006/07 campaign, Paul Moore left to manage Leek Town and Andy Lee took over the managerial reins as the club strived to maintain continuity. The Bears lifted their first piece of silverware for some time when they won the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup after defeating Witton Albion 3-0 at Wincham Park. At the end of the season Andy Lee stepped down as he announced a proposed move to Blackpool and Anthony Buckle and Darren Twigg were appointed with the task of rekindling the on-field performances. Off the field new floodlights were installed and the stand behind the bottom goal was reroofed. After a reasonable season, despite a poor final run in, both Anthony and Darren have stayed with the club and continue to build a side with promotion the target within the next couple of years. That plan was maintained in 2008/09 as the Bears ended a creditable 4th, just 1 point away from a 3rd place finish. A final run in of just 1 league defeat in the last 20 matches encouraged everyone. With two new key local businessmen, Nick Shatwell and Martin Lenton teaming up to add impetus to the club’s ambition, significant development of the clubs facilities have been started. A redesigned entrance, turnstiles and car park were the first step. Refurbishment of the club house followed and tarmac has been laid in the car park. For the start of 20010/11 the club now has a hospitality suite for sponsors and a new boardroom. With Ant and Twiggy remaining at the helm, they have been busy strengthening the squad for a serious attempt to lift some silverware and to complete the ambition for a return to UniBond football and the club aim this season to secure the ground grading. Match Report Saturday 21st August 2010; Vodkat League, Premier Division St Helens Town 0-3 Barnoldswick Town 0-1 Paul Barrett 45 Minutes, 0-2 Stewart Airdrie 79 Minutes, 0-3 Stewart Airdrie 83 Minutes. The first home league game of the new season was not kind to the hosts as an awful error just before half time gifted the visitors a goal and the impetus in a tight contest. In the early stages of the contest Iain Dyson won the ball in the middle of the park and advanced he found Liam Pearson on the edge of the box his shot was deflected by the defender and back off the striker behind for a goal kick. On 17 minutes a clearance from Ray Gore was collected by Dyson and he released Liam Arnold centrally be his shot was held by the visiting stopper. Further pressure from the hosts saw Michael Deakin’s free kick found Brian Hatton who tried his luck from 25 yards and this effort was controlled by Pearson on the edge of the box and he turned and shot wide of the right hand upright. The visitors’ first real effort of the match came on 21 minutes when Robert Grimes was found by Neil Chapman from the left wing and his shot from the edge of the box went wide of the right hand post. On the half hour mark St Helens created the best chance of the half when Deakin struck a free kick from 25 yards which Carrington had to be alert to push over the bar centrally. With the deadlock looking to have stretch to the interval disaster was to strike for the hosts. A misunderstanding between Hatton and keeper Newbrook saw the full back a back pass past the stopper and Paul Barrett took advantage to score in the empty net. The start to the second half saw the visitors buoyed by their goal before the break and have plenty of possession. On the hour St Helens manager Lee Riley shook things up with Marc Stephens & Ian Frazer replacing Hatton & Dyson with the formation changing to 3-5-2. This immediately looked to pay dividends as Paul Cliff got down the left and advanced to the edge of the box he found Pearson and his shot was claimed at the 2nd attempt by Carrington. Moments later it took a great save from Newbrook at the other end to keep the hosts in the match. Chapman tried his luck from 30 yards out and the home stopper adjusted well to tip the ball over the bar. Substitute Daley Woods almost opened his Town account on 78 minutes when his headed effort from a left wing free kick was held by the visiting keeper. Again moments later the visitors were counter attacking and netted to put the game beyond their hosts. An attack down the left saw the cross find Stewart Airdrie in plenty of space on the right of box and his well struck volley from 12 yards gave Newbrook in the home goal no chance. Further salt was rubbed into the wounds when another left wing cross was met by Airdrie and he doubled his tally securing the three points for the visitors. Woods almost netted a consolation in added on time when he broke into the box but his effort went the wrong side of the right hand upright. So St Helens sank to their first home defeat of the season and will need to improve for the visit of Congleton Town on Tuesday evening. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken teammates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club. Keep on Running . . . Steve Prescott’s Engage Mutual Challenge The Steve Prescott Foundation is delighted to announce its next amazing challenge - five marathons in five days ahead of this year’s Engage Super League Grand Final. Of these five marathons, Steve Prescott himself will run four in four days, with the fifth marathon being opened up to fans on the day of the final. The inspirational Steve Prescott MBE, is keen to add this challenge to an already impressive portfolio of physical feats and hopes that fans will get behind his latest fundraising endeavours. There are Four opportunities for people to run alongside Steve on this multiple marathon attempt. • • • •
Run the Full Four Days, 104 Miles Run a Full Day Run a Section of a Day Run a Mile in the Fanzone
“Running the London Marathon earlier this year was a tough yet rewarding challenge, so taking on four in four days will really push me to the limit – but I can’t wait and am already getting stuck into the training. Having fans complete the fifth marathon seems like a perfect end to the challenge, and will hopefully raise some much needed cash, and awareness for our two beneficiary charities.” “Keep on Running: Steve Prescott’s Engage Mutual Challenge” will begin on the morning of Tuesday 28th September at the KC Stadium in Hull, The Foundation are hoping friends and fans will run alongside Steve as he embarks upon the 104 mile route to Manchester’s Old Trafford. This epic challenge aims to raise a significant amount of funds for The Foundation Steve set up back in 2007, benefiting two charities close to his heart; The Christie Hospital in Manchester, where he receives treatment for a rare cancer, and the Try Assist Fund which supports those seriously injured whilst playing rugby league. Following his ultra marathon, Steve is challenging rugby league fans to run a collective 26 miles of their own in the Grand Final Fanzone at Old Trafford. Engage Mutual will be hosting this fifth marathon in their Health & Fitness area on Saturday 2nd October, where a treadmill will be in place for fans to run a sponsored leg of the final marathon. To be involved, participants need to sign up on the SPF website, www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk. Spaces are limited, but there are other ways to show support for the event, either by cheering the various runners on before they head to their seats for the Engage Super League season finale, or by making a donation. Donations can be made online via the website. If you would like to support Steve in this incredible challenge or would like to be involved in the event, please visit www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk or phone the SPF secretary Martin Blondel on 07971 792 859. Win a Brand New Toyota Aygo with St Helens Town . . . St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. We will be looking at a range of activities to ensure we both benefit from the partnership – with the ‘win-a-Toyota-Car’ project hopefully proving to be a successful start.’ The club have 200 sponsorship packages available at £100 each which will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to win the car. In addition, sponsor details will be added to a ‘roll-of-honour’ in the club’s printed and on-line matchday programme and sponsors will have their details added to the official club website. All participants will receive a signed commemorative certificate and will be entered in to the draw for the car which will be made on Saturday 26 March 2011 or as soon as all 200 packages have been sold. Martin Blondel, Secretary of The Steve Prescott Foundation said, ‘We’re always on the look-out for new fundraising ideas and when St Helens Town approached us we were delighted with their offer. We are looking forward to working alongside the Football Club and hope to raise a lot of money for the two charities we support the Christie Cancer Hospital & the Try Assist Fund’ For further information, or to purchase a sponsorship package please contact Andy Langley on 07850740894. Vodkat League News Progress Is The Aim At Rossendale United Despite suffering the disappointment of relegation from the Unibond league last season, Rossendale United are gradually adjusting to life back in the Vodkat League. Rossy survived relegation in previous seasons through restructuring in the National League System, before their luck ran out in the summer, but Chairman Steve Hobson is philosophical about the club's situation. "You are always hopeful that you can stay in a higher league, but you have to temper that with the thought that perhaps we have punched above our weight a bit in the last couple of seasons we've been in the Unibond League. It's difficult to attract sponsors and supporters when you are struggling at the bottom of the league, and to do well in the Unibond Legaue we would have needed more resources than we had available. The league doesn't lie, although I still feel we shouldn't have finished bottom of the league last year as I thought we were better than our final position suggested. But if you finish bottom, you have to expect to go down, and when that happens you just have to roll your sleeves up and get on with it. You need to find your level, although there was always a fear for us in coming down to the Vodkat League. Not because it was a poor league or anything like that, but traditionally to get out of this league you have to spend a lot of money, and that's something we haven't got.” "In terms of the structure of the club, dropping down (into the Vodkat League) will help us to consolidate, hopefully get a few wins under our belt and build the club up a bit. The club has a number of initiatives underway to raise the profile locally and also generate revenue from new sources, and the rebuilding of the club off the field and in the community is very much at the top of Steve's agenda. The most important thing for me now is to get the club on a solid financial footing behind the scenes. It's tough and progress is very slow, at times I feel I'm taking three steps backwards before going forwards. There's a lot of rhetoric about football clubs being involved with their local community, and plenty of clubs claim that they have close links with their community. But we genuinely are involved, and will always want to do so. We don't have money to give to people, but we do have resources we can make available, so if local people believe we can help them then my message is 'come on down and talk to us. We offer our facilities free to any charity that can make use of them, and it seems to be working well so far. We started an apprenticeship scheme in March, where people who weren't in employment, education or training have come down to work at the club and gain qualifications through working here. We also are linking in with a local charity called Agapao, who work with young people to develop skills both in this country and developing countries, such as Uganda. Linking with the charity will benefit both the charity and ourselves in terms of our corporate social responsibilities. The link came through one of the young lads who came down on our apprenticeship scheme. He was also working for the charity and he told me about it and their aims and objectives, so I asked to invite the chief executive of the charity to come down and see us, to see if there was anything we could do to help. From there, we met up and we are now about to launch a project in conjunction with Agapao and Rossendale Radio, the local radio station here, to benefit both local people and people in Uganda.” "Revenue wise, we now have the bar under the direct control of the board and the football club, and we are establishing links with Bury FC, who will be using the facilities here for their reserves and under 14s teams. All these initiatives will help us to develop new revenue streams into the club. I would emphasise that we as a club are always happy to share our successes with regarding funding and raising money with other clubs. One thing I used to enjoy about the Unibond League was having a chat to other directors and club officials after a game, talking about we raised money and dealt with certain issues. There was always a willingness to share information, and if there's anyone in the Vodkat League that wants to have similar conversations with me, I'd be happy to talk to them.” Looking ahead to prospects for this season, Steve says he believes it is important that Rossendale will be involved in the promotion race. “What happens on the field is important, as success on the field makes it easier to build up the club off the field, so we need to be in the top five this season. I'd be disappointed if we don't reach that sort of position in the league. We have dropped down to a lower league, but we are not looking at it thinking we're Billy Bigtime and that we are too good to be here. I believe you always have to aim to play at the highest level you can, given the resources you've got, and it's important that we build the club on a sound financial footing. If we do that, when we are ready we will attempt to get back into what is now the Evo-Stik, and maybe even beyond there".

St Helens Town News . . . Toyota Helping Town’s Drive for Success St Helens Town Football Club is delighted to announce that Johnsons Toyota Liverpool will become the club’s main sponsor for the forthcoming season and this will see the company’s Toyota brand emblazoned on the new Town kit throughout 2010-11. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘I am delighted that we’ve been able to develop our partnership with Johnsons and this builds upon the great support they offered St Helens Town throughout last season’. Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, the Bootle based car dealership, were initially the club’s Executive Programme Sponsors for season 2009-10 and extended their support courtesy of a number of match and match ball sponsorships along with the provision of a branded car which formed part of the club’s Player of the Month awards. Johnsons were also extremely generous in their support of Town’s Bert Trautmann anniversary celebrations in November 2009. John McKiernan said, ‘We worked extremely hard to generate a huge amount of sponsorship last season and gave considerable coverage to a large number of new sponsors via our printed and online matchday programmes, club website and matchday activities. We are hopeful that last year’s efforts will provide a firm foundation for future seasons. “Johnsons Toyota Liverpool have given the club a record breaking financial boost during tough economic times and we feel that it is in part a recognition that St Helens Town can play a leading role in promoting their brand across the North West.’ He added, ‘Johnsons will be undertaking a number of promotional events and product placement activities across St Helens during the coming year and St Helens Town will be prominent throughout these. It’s a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of the club prior to our arrival at the new stadium in August 2011!’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons Toyota Liverpool said, ‘Our work with St Helens Town last season proved an ideal opportunity to expand our brand across Merseyside and we are looking forward to developing and extending our partnership so that both ourselves and the club will continue to see significant benefits’. He added, ‘We have some exciting plans for the coming season which will raise the club’s profile along with additional sponsorship monies.’ Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

In Other News . . . Dual Seal Stadium Gutted in Brighouse Blaze Brighouse Town's home match with Bridlington Town on Saturday went ahead despite the devastating blaze at the Dual Seal Stadium last week. Following a visit by the KoolSports Northern Counties East League Ground Grading Officer, Ian Cox, it was confirmed that the match could be played. The visitors Bridlington showed understanding of the situation and assisted Brighouse to get the game on. Last week’s postponed match with Lincoln Moorlands Railway will now take place on Tuesday 5th October. The KoolSports Northern Counties East League would like to thank everyone for their understanding shown to Brighouse Town in what is a very difficult period for them. It follows a blaze at the ground in the early hours of the morning on Monday 16th August that has virtually destroyed the bar, refreshments area and toilet facilities. Secretary Malcolm Taylor told The Telegraph & Argus: "Parts of our ground are completely burnt out, gutted, like a bomb has been dropped. There are charred remains on the floor and twisted metal above that. The fire took hold sometime between 2.30am and 3am on Monday morning and was spotted by someone in the houses behind the ground. If they hadn't called the fire brigade there and then I think it would have been a lot worse."

Around The Grounds Arbories Memorial Sports Ground - Padiham FC The final game of last season saw St Helens Town venture to the Arbories Memorial Sports Ground for the second time in the 2009/10 season having exit the FA Vase after a 4-3 reverse there at the start of September. The ground is Padiham’s second home having started life at Calderside on the banks of the River Calder where they played from the clubs formation in 1878. The opening of the present ground came on August 20th 1949 when 1777 spectators turned up to see the Club's opening Lancashire Combination fixture of the 1949- 50 football season. Upon arriving at the ground and approaching the entrance box you have to go up a set of steps and the car park area is lower than pitch level, when you enter the ground the club house is on your left and the pitch off to your right. The clubhouse in well equipped and very modern and spacious with a variety of refreshments and snacks available to suit all needs. The clubhouse building also houses the snack bar and the committee room which is a narrow rectangle with photo’s and mementos of the clubs various achievements adorning the walls. The ground itself has stands on two sides with a covered terrace behind the goal at the entrance end and on the clubhouse touchline there is a seated stand and a covered terrace. The other touchline and behind the goal at the far end are uncovered but offer good views of the action when the weather is fine. The seated stand and terrace on the club house side of the ground are recent additions to the ground after damage was caused to the facilities in high winds a few years ago and these additions to the ground are excellent improvements. Overall a good ground with ample facilities and a 4-2 Town win made the day excellent all round!

All Our Yesterdays . . . Town’s reformation – press articles: Part 1 Regular readers will recall how it was proposed to revive the old St. Helens Town football club in 1946, after 18 years of dormancy. Rather prematurely, the new team was entered in the FA Cup in 1946/47 and, although drawn to play Prescot Cables, the game had to be forfeited as there was no team in existence to put on the park. The ground at Hoghton Road had been purchased and the new committee took over the Derbyshire Hill Rovers team in the St. Helens Combination, with a view to entering the Liverpool County Combination in August 1947. The following articles appeared in Peter Smith’s column in The St. Helens Newspaper in February and April 1947. Will you help bring “good class” Soccer to St. Helens? (11th February 1947) It is the hope of a band of very enthusiastic sportsmen to revive the old St. Helens Town Association Football Club. Plans are going well and for a start a ground has been purchased at Hoghton-road, Sutton, which it is the hope of the committee will be in readiness for next season and available not only for local league finals but to foster schoolboy association football in St. Helens area. A new pavilion is in course of erection, with ample dressing room accommodation. It is hoped also to make the ground comfortable from a spectators point of view. Derbyshire Hill Rovers team has been taken over by this new committee, and it is hoped that next year the team will compete in the Liverpool Combination. The aim is to bring good class association football to St. Helens. At present they have a very young team, with one or two possible stars. It is hoped that more signings will be made, and that a team worthy of the name St. Helens will result. Many well-known Soccer fans are connected with this new project. Subscriptions have been coming in very well, although an official appeal has not yet been made. The officials of the club are Mr. G. Fryer (chairman), Mr. J. Hayes (treasurer), Mr. J. Johnson (football secretary), with Mr. J. Friar (general secretary). Also connected with the club are the Pickavances, of Peasley Cross, Councillor P. Griffiths and Messrs. McNelly, Farrar, Fairclough, Prescott, Kerfoot, Williams, Rigby and many well-known Sutton residents. As I have already mentioned, donations have been coming in very well, but as you are aware it costs money to purchase a new ground, build a pavilion, etc., and I have been asked to appeal to all sportsmen to help this worthy cause. Donations should be sent to Mr. J. Hayes, Junction-lane, treasurer of the club. An official acknowledgment of all donations received will be made. Now, you Soccer fans, rally round the new club! Send your donation. Any amount, large or small, will be thankfully received. How long will the sport boom last? (1st April 1947) How long will the present boom in sport last? Sportsmen recall there was a similar surge of interest after the 1914-18 war. All kinds of new ideas were put forward then just as are now coming forward. . . . Town’s Early Years They recall, too, that after the first few boom years things died down again and many progressive ideas were pigeon-holed. Will that happen again? What is the reaction of these events in St. Helens? In Soccer there is plenty of interest among the established leagues which might or might not lead to one much needed improvement: more sports grounds. But so far, there is only one big new venture: the revival of the old Town Soccer Club. An attempt was made at the beginning of this season to establish sport on a more solid foundation of mutual help, but as readers know, it fizzled out. It was an organisation that could have built a solid rock of sport in St. Helens. The St. Helens Town Soccer Club is building on good foundations, it seems. Next season, the first official one of the club, will see them a step up the ladder of bigger football in Liverpool County Combination. That’s a start, though many of us would have liked the step to have been higher still. And the club has entered for the FA Cup competition, which is a fine and ambitious gesture. But, to my mind, the most significant news lately released from the club headquarters is that they are starting early this summer team building. The idea of a St. Helens Town Club has attracted many, but the team building that attracts me is that of roping in the lads. Practices and trials will be held at the club’s new ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, during the close season for boys as well as potential first teamers. The club is due to run other teams besides their first eleven, with the encouragement of schoolboys and youths as an important part of the programme. A later programme will cover the club’s first end of season party.

Vodkat League News Tribute To Graham Beesley After their FA Cup game with Wigan Robin Park, which ended in a 2-2 draw at Surrey Street, Glossop North End Officials and Players gathered in the centre circle to pay tribute to Graham Beeley, a Director of the club who passed away in July. Family members also attended the short ceremony which honoured a club stalwart, who had given much of his life to the club. Club Secretary Peter Hammond paid tribute to Graham the match-day programme . . . A True Gentleman To many, Graham was quite a private person, but once you got to know him he was very much like the rest of us. He liked a pint, loved a cigarette, and many other of the little 'pleasures' of life. He was a very intelligent person and, having attended Glossop Grammar School, spent virtually the whole of his working life as a Civil Servant, working for the Inland Revenue/Social Security. He supported Glossop FC from being a boy, and the culmination of that support, like many of us, was his team's success in reaching the FA Challenge Vase Cup Final. He really enjoyed that weekend, and indeed it was the last he would be able to enjoy. His visit was made so enjoyable (even though we lost the match) by being amongst so many friends. Janice, who made such a fuss of him, and Dave Gorton, who looked after him like a son, to name but a couple. During his time at the club, Graham has acted as a Supporters Club Committee member, Refreshment Hut Attendant, Club Director, Treasurer, Ground Assistant, and Benefactor. Many is the time that the players wouldn't have been paid their expenses had it not been for his selfless generosity, in loaning the club money, even though he could not have been confident in having it refunded. Graham was a special pal of Eric (Seth) Monks and the late Steve Baran, and more latterly Barry Jones. He supported everything the club tried to promote in the hard times, and helped on the ground right up until his illness caught up with him. He cleaned the clubhouse, the toilets, the dressing rooms and even made a special job of collecting the spent cigarette ends, as he thought them unsightly. Yes, I and some others will remember Graham fondly. He so looked forward to the 'away days', to the extent that he delayed his hospital treatment so that he could see last season out. He didn't quite manage it, but we kept him up to date with the results. All the little old ladies that he ran errands for, and more, can now look after Graham, as they are now re-united. God bless a true gentleman." Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Saint’s Alive . . . A pregnant woman is involved in a car accident and lapses into a coma. When she eventually wakes up, six months later, she realises she is no longer pregnant. Believing that she has lost her unborn child she screams for a doctor, who soon calms her. “Congratulations,” he tells her. “You have twins, a boy and a girl.” He goes on to explain what had happened many months earlier. “When your brother heard about the accident he came over and, as he is your closest relative, we asked him to give your babies names.” With a worried look, for she knows that her brother is an idiot, she asks the doctor what names they have been given. “Well,” says the doctor. “Your little girl is called Denise.” She soon relaxes at this news. “And the boy?” she asks. “Denephew,” replies the doctor. Two grains of sand are in the desert; one turns to the other and says, “Busy here, isn’t it?” A couple are invited to a masked Halloween party, but the woman develops a terrible headache and tells her husband to go alone, so he takes his costume and away he goes. His wife, after sleeping for an hour or so, wakes up feeling much better and decides to go along to the party after all. Since her husband doesn’t know what her costume is, she contrives to have some fun by watching to see how he acts when she isn’t with him. Upon arriving, she spots her husband cavorting around on the dance floor, dancing with every good-looking woman he can find. After a while she sidles up to him and, being a rather seductive woman herself, tempts him to leave his current partner and devote his time to her. As he is her husband, she allows him to get very friendly until, eventually, he whispers a proposition in her ear, she agrees, and off they go to find one of the bedrooms. Just before the midnight unmasking she makes an excuse, slips away, and goes home. She puts her costume away and gets into bed, wondering what sort of explanation her husband is going to give about his behaviour. She is sitting up, reading, when he finally gets home, and she asks what sort of time he’s had. “Oh the same old thing” he replies. “You know I never have a good time if you’re not there.” Suspicions aroused, she asks, “So did you dance much?” He shakes his head. “Not once,” he replies. “As soon I got there I met Don and Pete with some other guys. We went into the den and played poker all evening. But I’ll tell you what - the guy who borrowed my costume had a great time!” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
