Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Formby. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us at our new home, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. Saturday saw us have a large sense of déjà vu as we stormed into a 2-0 lead against Flixton with goals from Liam Pearson and Daley Woods. The jitters started to appear again as first we conceded a penalty which the visitors converted and then conceded again from a corner to see the scores level with ten minutes to play. With worries creeping in wondering if we would lose the game we need not have worried as Daley Woods created an opening and netted a winner from 25 yards. Congratulation must go to Liam Pearson who after netting our first goal on Saturday took his tally to 14 for the season in 17 appearances and went joint top of the Premier Division goalscorers list with Steve Moore of New Mills, Astley Mulholland of Flixton and Stuart Wellstead of Winsford United. It is a great achievement for “Peo” in his first season at the club and let’s hope he can continue this form and be in the hunt for the golden boot come the end of April. Daley Woods’ form has also been excellent over the last few weeks as he has now netted 5 goals in the last 3 matches to take his tally for the season to 7 goals. This evening’s game is our 7th home league match of the season and our 14th league contest it is interesting that our league position has improved massively now that we have caught up on the imbalance of home and away matches from the start of the season. Tonight sees the end of a run of three home league matches before we spend a week on the road with visits to Rossendale and Squires Gate on Saturday and next Tuesday respectively. We have done well since starting to host our home games here at Edge Green Street and will be looking to carry this form into this evening’s contest against Formby who we will be looking to gain a modicum of revenge for the defeat at Altcar Road at the end of last month on an evening when Town turned in arguably their worse performance of the season. The quick turnaround of the reverse fixture will have the previous game still fresh in the minds of the players and hopefully this will be enough motivation for this evening’s game. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends from Formby FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with tonight’s match officials and our own ‘home’ support are treated to an entertaining game! Tonight is the last of three ‘home’ fixtures in the last week and hopefully the lads will be able to carry on from Saturday’s three points earned in a hard fought fashion against Flixton. A goal from Liam pearson midway through the first half gave Town the lead and when Daley Woods put Town two-up all looked well. For the second game in succession we threw away a lead when Flixton hit back with two quick goals but on this occasion Town regained a foothold in the game and eight minutes from time Daley Woods slotted past the visiting ‘keeper to earn the three points. Saturday’s win made it seven victories from our last ten outings but we must be mindful that one of our two defeats in that run came towards the end of September when Formby won 2-1 at Altcar Road on what proved to be a disappointing performance by Town. This weekend sees Town make the journey to Rossendale United for the first time in a number of years while next Tuesday evening the destination is Blackpool where Squires Gate will be our hosts. A reminder to Town fans wanting to travel - there’s usually an offer of a lift to games just see any committee member tonight for details. Don’t forget as we get towards the back end of the month we have our 100 Club draw which will be made following our home fixture against Glossop North End on Saturday 30th October. In Town Today . . . Formby United Football Club was founded at the end of the Great War in 1919. The club moved to Brows Lane in 1920 and following the move the club dropped the 'United' title. The club would remain at Brows Lane for eighty-two years before moving to their new stadium in Altcar Road. In the beginning they joined the Liverpool & District League before moving onto Liverpool League, the I Zingari Football League and then the Liverpool County Combination in 1938. Despite being known as one of the top sides in the 'County Comb' they only won the Championship once, that coming in 1948/49. However they did enjoy regular cup successes, winning the Liverpool Amateur Cup on three occasions, in 1930, 1948 & 1949, the Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1935, the Liverpool Challenge Cup twice in 1953 & 1964, and the George Mahon Cup in 1965. In 1968, Formby joined the Lancashire Combination and stay until May 1971 when they switched to the Cheshire League. They became the first non league club to win the Liverpool Senior Cup in 1977/78 when they defeated a strong Tranmere Rovers side, 1-0 at Brows Lane, and the following season they finished fourth in the Cheshire League. Formby hit the nations headlines in 1973, when, they reached the First Round proper of the F.A Cup, where they met Oldham Athletic and went down 2-0 to the side who were leading the old Football League Third Division at the time. In 1982, the Lancashire Combination and the Cheshire League merged to form the North West Counties Football League. The club were placed in Division One of the league but found life difficult, regularly ending up at the wrong end of the table. Their best season in Division One came in 1984/85 when they reached the F.A Cup 4th Qualifying Round losing to Penrith after extra time 2-3, Penrith went on to face Burnley at Turf Moor in the next round. The side also reached the final of the Liverpool Senior Cup but lost out to local rivals Marine 1-2. The Squirrels were eventually relegated to Division Two of the league in 1986/87 but following a reorganization of the NWCL after a number of clubs left to join the Northern Premier League, the facilities at Brows Lane meant that Formby found themselves back in Division One for the 1987/88 season. However two years later they were relegated once again. The club ended a barren seventeen-year run without winning any silverware when they lifted the Lamot Pils Trophy in 1994/95 at Burscough's Victoria Park ground when they defeated eventual Division Two Champions Flixton by two goals to one in an exciting final. Formby completed a unique double in 2000/01 by becoming the first side to lift both North West Counties League, Cup Competitions. The Squirrels became the first Second Division side since 1987 to lift the Worthington Challenge Trophy (League Challenge Cup) when, after a victories over fellow Division Two side Holker Old Boys, they beat four Division One clubs Salford City, Cheadle Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . Formby Football Club Town, Fleetwood and Kidsgrove Athletic. In the final at Bury’s Gigg Lane ground a thrilling game ended 1-1 after extra time when Leon Hymas gave Formby the lead only for Peter Carty to level the game shortly afterwards for Division One side Curzon Ashton. Formby went on to win 5-3 on pens. Following years of speculation, the club left their Brows Lane home in the summer of 2002 to relocate to a purpose built ground near the Formby by-pass in Altcar Road. However, the move was not without its problems as the club was thrown out of the North West Counties Football League, as the ground wasn't finished by the required deadline. Formby were forced to compete in the Liverpool County Combination League, which they last graced some 34 years previously, while they brought the ground up to the standard required by the North West Counties League. Formby’s last game at Brows Lane was played on 16th April 2002 and ended with a 4-1 win over Daisy Hill with Paul Gray scoring the last ever goal at the ground with two minutes remaining. They were exiled to the Liverpool County Combination for one season as following various ground improvements, the Squirrels were re-elected to the North West Counties League 2nd Division for the start of the 2003/4 campaign. Formby immediately proved themselves to be one of the stronger teams in the Division and challenged at the top for the whole season. 2003/04 ended with some disappointment, as a final home defeat denied Formby runners-up spot in the NWCL Division Two, but the changes in the non-league pyramid over the summer meant that third place was good enough to regain their Division One status just one season after returning from the Liverpool County Combination. Formby struggled during their first season back in the top flight but showed grit and determination and some great form at the tail end of the season saw them avoid finishing in the relegation places. 2005/6 saw the Squirrels survive in Division One despite finishing bottom thanks to the UniBond League expansion The following year was a struggle both on and off the pitch. Good form late in the season could not stop them finishing in the relegation places but thanks to another UniBond expansion only Stone Dominoes were relegated and saw Formby reprieved for the 2nd time. Formby had an excellent 2007/8 season ending up in 13th position and advanced to the FA Vase 4th Round, 2008/9 season saw the club have a mixed season before finally finishing in 15th position. A poor start to the 2009/10 season saw Formby lose six of their first nine league matches and early exits in both the FA Cup & Vase cost Tony Martin his job with Mark Maddox his replacement. Maddox steered the team to a 15th position finish but left the club to take over at Leigh Genesis over the summer with former FA Trophy winner Gary Martindale being given the task of assembling a squad capable of improving on that finish.

Match Report Sat 16th October 2010 Vodkat League, Premier Division St Helens Town 3-2 Flixton Town almost threw another good lead away this afternoon as Flixton came from 2-0 behind to level at 2-2 before a late Town goal gave the hosts all three points. The host took an early lead from an unusually direct route when a long kick out of his hands saw Dale Newbrook send the ball towards Liam Pearson the ball bounced taking Ian Whitehead out of the equation and the other Flixton centre half Kevin McGrath fell over has be moved backwards leaving the way to goal clear for Pearson and he made no mistake lobbing the ball over the advancing goalkeeper and into the net to put the hosts into the lead. Further chances were carved out as Daley Woods and Marc Stephens had openings which they failed to hit the target with but the Town pressure failed to tell and the visitors almost netted at the other end as the first half entered its latter stages. Astley Mullholland found space on the right wing and sent a dangerous ball into the box it took a deflection off a Town defender and broke for Aaron Heavington on the front post his effort looked to be a certain goal but Dale Newbrook pulled off an excellent reflex save to send the hosts into the interval in the lead. After repelling an initial spell of pressure from the visitors at the start of the second half Town doubled their lead when a good move culminated in Daley Woods being released beating his defender in the process and advancing towards goal before shooting past Jason Brieley in the Flixton goal. The tide of the game turned on a penalty decision on 77 minutes when John Elias felled Astley Mullholland in the Town penalty area and the striker picked himself up dusted himself down and sent Dale Newbrook the wrong way to halve the deficit and give the visitors a foothold in the game. A couple of minutes later there was a massive sense of déjà vu in the gathered ranks of the Town fans as the visitors levelled a left wing corner was sent into the box and visiting skipper Kevin McGrath got a touch on the front post that took the ball past Dale Newbrook in the Town goal and despite a last ditch effort to head the ball off target by Peter Birch he could not manage to do so and the ball found the net to level matters. With the memory of Tuesday nights’ second half capitulation still fresh in the mind there were some worrying moments between Flixton’s leveller and Town netting what turned out to be the winning goal. Daley Woods did well playing a one two with Iain Dyson when he received the ball back from Dyson he had his back to goal before making space to turn and from 25 yards out he decided to try his luck his shot was heading goalwards but looked to be quite a routine take for Brieley in the Flixton goal before the shot bounced in front of him and all he managed to do was palm the effort into his own net. With the clock running down Matt Ellis had a free header in the Town box which he could only direct straight at Newbrook in the Town goal and in the later stages Newbrook had to extend himself well to push an effort from Heavington on the edge of the box around the left hand post to preserve Town’s lead and indeed help them earn the three points. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. . . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right below) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club. St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. We will be looking at a range of activities to ensure we both benefit from the partnership – with the ‘win-a-Toyota-Car’ project hopefully proving to be a successful start.’ The club have 200 sponsorship packages available at £100 each which will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to win the car. Town Pen Pictures . . . Dale Newbrook: Signed at the start of the 2010-11 season as cover from Kevin Woods but has already made the number one jersey his own. Played against Town for West Didsbury and Chorlton FC in a pre-season friendly fixture. A great shot stopper who commands his area extremely well. Vodkat League Premier Division 'Goalkeeper of the Month' for August 2010 Kevin Woods: Very good young goalkeeper who is now in his third season with the club. Last season he battled for the keeper's jersey with Graeme McCall and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Stephen Ben Kay: Another player starting his second season with the club after signing from Wigan Robin Park. Can play centre back or midfield and has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. The 2009-10 Players Player of the Year and rewarded with the captaincy for season 201011. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club in 2008-09 season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. John will be looking to improve his disciplinary record. Iain Dyson: Former Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club's top goalscorer last term for the third time in four seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Luke Faulkner: Twenty two year old central defender who joined the club last season from MidCheshire outfit Garswood United. Liam Pearson: Joined in the summer from Ford Motors, a prolific goal scorer in the Liverpool County Premier League. A big strong centre forward who is good in the air and with the ball at his feet and he will prove to be a handful for opposition defenders. Paul Cliff: Another young player who joined during the close season from neighbours Prescot Cables where he was a regular in their Unibond side. Paul plays on the left wing and has an eye for goal as his pre-season games showed. Marc Stephens: Young midfield player who has had a fine couple of seasons at Town. Signed in the summer of 2008 he came into his own when moved into central midfield where his movement and passing ability are a real quality. He has had a excellent start to the 2010-11 season with goals being added to his repertoire! Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club last season. After some early substitute appearances he's now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who's good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club last season after spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR and Wigan Robin Park. Liam Arnold: A new signing from local outfit Windle Labour FC where he was top scorer in the Warrington Premier Division in season 2009-10. Good pace and creativity have been a highlight of his early season form for Town Lee Owens: A strong and deceptively agile central defender who joined from Prescot Cables during the summer 2010. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. He has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian spent much of last season recovering from injury. Former Stockport and Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Lee Riley: Joined the club two seasons ago as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition to the club, stepping up to become manager this season. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables and also had a playing spell with Town. Town’s opening three rounds of this season’s FA Carlsberg Vase have all been at ‘home’ (two at Atherton Collieries and one at Ashton Town) but the 2nd Round sees the 1987 Vase winners paired with Koolsport Northern Counties East League Premier Division outfit Winterton Rangers who are based in North Lincolnshire. Vodkat League News A Bright Future Beckons for Maine Road With the club's successful youth policy continuing to bring young players through the ranks, and developments off the field now at the planning stage, Maine Road are looking ahead with optimism to the future. For a period of time, the club's occupation of their Brantingham Road site was the subject of some discussion with the landlords, a local church. Road previously shared the site with the Manchester County FA, and when they moved out, the club then had to strike a new deal to remain at the ground. But negotiations have progressed well, and as Road's Dave Miller explained, the club's base at Brantingham Road is now secured for the next few years at least. "Lines of communication weren't always as they might have been with the church in the past, but we are in direct dialogue with them now, and the situation has improved greatly. I think it's best summed up by saying both parties have realised there are two sets of sensible people on both sides, and that we can work together to move forward. There are now developments planned at Brantingham Road which will be mutually beneficial. The clubhouse is slowly being revamped, we are going to get a licence shortly which will help us greatly, and we have secured agreement to play at the ground for a minimum of five years, and hopefully that will be extended further before too long.� "There are plans to open up office space in the upstairs area of the club house, and that would be useful, as it would mean we'd have the site occupied during weekdays which would be a good thing from a security point of view. It's a very strong church with a big inner city ethnic base, and from what we understand it is fairly vibrant. I think their long term aim is to build on that and develop a facility that can be used as a local community centre. That can only be good for both of us, and we are also looking to develop links with the local church school, which has begun with club Secretary Derek Barber and members of the coaching team running some coaching sessions there. It's been a nervous time for us, but we are at last in a position to finally move forward and develop the club in the way we had always planned." On the playing side, there can be few managers more steeped in the history of the club they manage than Maine Road boss Ian Walker. Ian holds the club playing record of 631 competitive appearances, and is now in his second spell as manager. He stepped down early in 2009 to take a break for a few months, but for someone with such a long association with the club it didn't take long before he was persuaded to come back. "Even when I stopped managing for about six months, I missed it and still came back to watch games at the ground. When it got to the close season in the summer of 2009, Derek Barber (Maine Road Secretary) persuaded me to come back and do it again. It wasn't a difficult decision to make, and I enjoyed it last year and I've enjoyed it so far this year as well." Throughout Ian's long association with the club, Maine Road have had a tradition of bringing young players through the rank into the first team. It's a tradition that he is happy to continue embracing, and he is in the fortunate position of being able to tap into a wide pool of young talent using his contacts around Manchester. "I'm a PE teacher at a school in Prestwich, on the north side of Manchester and I coach the school teams. Through that, I've got good contacts at all the schools around Greater Manchester, so we pick up a few players up that way from players I get to hear about through word of mouth, or from watching in opposition school teams. In Other News . . . Fans favourite brought back to steady Mariners defence. Evo-Stik Premier League Marine has re-signed central defender Michael Jackson following his departure in the summer to Welsh Premier League Newtown. Jackson, 30, played 43 games for Marine last season scoring 2 goals and played a leading role at the centre of the Mariner’s defence. He also captained the side for 23 games. Jackson has vast experience having won the Welsh Premier title in 2005/6 and 2006/7 with TNS as a full time professional. He has played in two Champions League ties against Liverpool in 2005 and MyPa-47 from Finland in 2006. Liverpool born Jackson has also had successful spells at Southport, Caernarfon Town and Rhyl in addition to a season in the Icelandic first division with FC Prottur. Marine has received international clearance from the Football Association that will enable Michael to be eligible to play in the FA Trophy tie against Ashton Utd on Saturday. Marine Chairman Paul Leary said:“I am absolutely delighted that Michael has agreed to return to Marine. He has massive experience and will be a great influence on our younger defenders. Around The Grounds Brookburn Road - West Didsbury & Chorlton The final ground review of our preseason campaign saw us visit Vodkat League hopefuls West Didsbury & Chorlton who ply their trade in the Manchester League, Division One. The ground is in Chorlton a couple of miles away from current Vodkat League, Premier Division outfit Maine Road. You approach the facility down a residential street and when you think you are going the wrong way towards a wooded area you reach the gate of the ground and through which it opens out into the clubs ground. Cars are parked on the grass bank to the left as you enter the ground and this side of the pitch has hard standing all the way along the length of the touchline. This hard standing continues as you round the corner of the pitch and end up behind the goal at the far end of the pitch this area host the clubhouse building which includes a very modern and tidy bar, and the dressing room facilities. This area also house the only area of covering in the ground which also houses the seated quota in the ground. The ground is currently three sided as the far touchline is blocked off and houses the dugouts which as a bit ramshackle but are only a temporary measure and with the aim being to open up this side if the ground to house a spectator area and new dugouts. The final area behind the goal as you enter is an uncovered area with a surface that would not pass ground grading as hard standing. The club have big plans for the facility with planning permission having been granted for floodlights to be installed and they are hopeful of reviving plans for a community use football facility on the field behind which they own. As has been well documented the clubs application to join our league was vetoed by the FA after the Manchester League complained but will be hopeful of stepping up very soon.

All Our Yesterdays . . . Rhyl had one of the best non-league football programmes and produced a 16-page issue for Town’s FA Cup Qualifier on 3rd September 1966. A link between the Rhyl club and the town of St. Helens was the brewing company Greenall Whitley, who still brewed beer at their Hardshaw Brewery in St. Helens in the 1960s and who advertised prominently on the back page of the programme. Brief pen-pictures of the visitors gave the team as: John Critchley, in his 10th season as goalkeeper, John Atherton, Malcolm Dean, John Anders, Victor Dalton, Derek Hennin (formerly with Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic), Dennis Winters, Jimmy McKiernan (playermanager, signed from Pwllheli) Eric Atherton, Ricky Young (also ex-Pwllheli, described as “schemer of the attack”), Ray Fairweather and substitute Norman Turner. The team lined up in white with blue facings. Another link with today’s Town club was a club lottery to win a car, a two-tone Wolseley, price of tickets was one shilling. For the record, Town went out of the Cup, beaten 5-1. Another 16-page programme was issued by South Liverpool for Town’s Lancashire Combination league clash at Holly Park, on 30th September 1967, a considerable improvement on their previous season’s 4-page publication. Coincidentally, South had just lost an FA Cup tie at Rhyl, which they blamed on a linesman’s decision, he having disallowed a goal which the referee had earlier given. South were to go on to be founder-members of the Northern Premier League the following August – how the mighty have fallen! Two rare home issues are featured next. Town issued a 4-page, single sheet programme for their Lancashire Junior Cup QuarterFinal against Skelmersdale United on 9th March 1968, type-written and run off on a Gestetner machine. It must have been the first issue of the season, as the back page featured Personality Parade No. 1, under which heading were brief pen-pictures of Mr. Brighouse, the President, who enjoyed sea fishing in his boat based in North Wales and goalkeeper Allan Jones, who was said to be 20 years old, 6 feet 2 inches and 14 ½ stones, signed earlier in the season from Blackbrook. The programme was priced at 3d. The following season saw a more professionally produced programme with advertisements, still only 4 pages, but double the price at 6d. The issue featured is that for the Nelson game on 30th November 1968. Interestingly, under the Town crest, the dates are given 1947-1968, reflecting 21 years’ existence of the club, although a more detailed study shows the club was reformed in 1946. Among the advertisers were Sherdley Hall Garage and Fred. W. Marsh, funeral director. Skelmersdale United published an 8-page programme for their Lancashire Combination game against Town at White Moss Park on 16th March 1968, still smarting from their County Cup defeat a week earlier at Hoghton Road. . . . Programme Review Part 3 lying second in the table, 4 points behind Morecambe with a game in hand. The long-defunct Guinness Exports were in 4th place. The table featured only the leading eight teams with no mention of St. Helens Town. A fortnight later, Town travelled to Springfield Park, Wigan, for their Lancashire Junior Cup Semi-Final against Wigan Athletic, who were 10 years away from attaining Football League status and 37 years away from the FA Premier League. Their 16-page programme was similar in design to the Wigan RL programme of the time. One advertiser was Eavesway Motor Coaches Limited, still going strong today. Athletic, who went on to the Final, were looking forward to the visit of Sir Stanley Rous to their Good Friday Cheshire League game against Mossley. The mayor was intending to entertain Sir Stanley, president of FIFA, at Haigh Hall before the game. St. Helens Town drew 0-0 with Chorley in the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in September 1968 and our next programme is that for the replay at Victory Park on 26th September. Chorley were founder-members of the Northern Premier League and it was a great shock when Town won the game. An 8-page programme was issued, priced at 6d. Later the same season, St. Helens Town were called upon to visit Bacup Borough at their West View home two weeks in succession, 4th and 11th January, the second game being a Lancashire Junior Cup tie. Bacup produced one programme to cover both games, 16 pages, the covers being professionally printed whilst the inside pages were typewritten on yellow, blue and pink paper. The major news was the death of the club President, Sir Jack Jarvis. A former jockey, he gave up riding in 1914 and had a glittering career as a trainer, winning the Derby in 1943 with Ocean Swell at 28/1. GLYN JONES

Saint’s Alive . . . Two elderly women are out driving in a large car from which both can barely see over the dashboard. As they are cruising along they come to a set of traffic lights. The lights are on red, but they just go straight through. The woman in the passenger seat thinks to herself, “I think I must be losing it - I could have sworn we just went through a red light.” After a few more minutes they come to another set of lights showing red, and again they go right through. This time, the woman in the passenger seat is almost sure that the light is set at red, but still has a niggling doubt that she’s losing it. By now she’s getting extremely nervous and decides to pay very close attention to the road ahead, and to the next set of traffic lights in particular. At the next crossroads, she sees that the lights are definitely at red, but they go straight through once more. “Do you know you’ve just gone through three red lights in a row?” she enquires of the driver. “You could have killed the pair of us!” Her friend looks at her in disbelief. “I thought you were driving,” she gasps. Two blokes meet up in the street and, not having seen one another for some time, start catching up. One of them has his wife with him, and after a while she pipes up, “I’ve done the Pennine Way, you know.” The men take no notice and carry on, but a few minutes later she interrupts again. “And I’ve been all round Snowdonia.” The men carry on talking but she persists, “I walked the full length of Hadrian’s Wall last summer.” Her husband can see that his friend is starting to get a little annoyed by these constant interruptions. “You’ll have to excuse the wife,” he explains. “She does tend to ramble!” A young man eating in McDonald’s notices an elderly couple sitting down to have lunch. He sees that they have ordered just one meal and drink, but have also taken an empty cup. As he watches, the gentleman carefully divides the hamburger in half, then counts out the fries, one for him, one for her, until each has half of them. He then pours half of the soft drink into the extra cup and sets it in front of his wife. The old guy then begins to eat while his wife sits watching, with her hands folded in her lap. The young man decides to ask if they would allow him to purchase another meal for them so that they wouldn’t have to split just one between them. “Oh, there’s no need to do that,” says the old gentleman. “You see, we’ve been married for sixty years, and have always shared everything 50/50.” Rather touched by this story, the young man asks the old lady when she is going to eat her portion of the meal. “It won’t be long,” she replies. “But it’s his turn with the teeth.” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
