Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Alder Street, home of Atherton Collieries for this FA Vase, 2nd Qualifying Round Tie against Northern Counties East League, Division One outfit Worsbrough Bridge Athletic. I hope our visitors had a good journey for Yorkshire to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. This afternoon’s match is the third we have played at Alder Street this season. In the previous two matches, a friendly against Atherton Colls and the previous round of the FA Vase against Brodsworth we have netted thirteen times and conceded two, it seems Alder Street is a happy hunting ground for us this term and lets hope this continues this afternoon. We come into this game on the back of an excellent performance and result away against Silsden a week ago today. An early goal for Iain Dyson, his first of the campaign and his 73rd goal for Town put us in the driving seat and Liam Pearson’s header just after the half hour mark sent us in at the break with a two goal lead. ‘Peo’ added another midway through the second half to secure all three points and it was nice at the other end to have secured a clean sheet and much credit must go to the back four and Dale Newbrook in goal for their solidity during the later stages of the contest. Onto this afternoon’s visitors, Worsbrough have had a mixed bag of things at the start of the season but recorded an excellent win at Cheadle Town in the previous round of this competition and will be no pushovers this afternoon. Both sides know that a win this afternoon would see them host the winners of this afternoon’s tie between Abbey Hey and Oldham Boro. This afternoon’s visitors have not won a match since their FA Vase win two weeks ago having lost on consecutive Tuesday’s first going down 1-3 at home to Handsworth before losing 2-1 at Stavely Miners Welfare on Tuesday evening but recent form will go out the window for this cup tie. As stated before the previous rounds match the FA Vase is another vital source of income to the club. For the playing staff, committee and supporters it is always nice to have a cup run and with our history in this competition we all dream of emulating the team of 1987 lifting the trophy at Wembley, at 5pm we could be 90 minutes closer or dreaming for another season! Lets get behind the lads this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory. Enjoy the Game . . . Jeff Voller Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Season 2010-11

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Alder Street, home of Atherton Collieries FC for this FA Carlsberg Vase 2nd Qualifying Round encounter with Worsbrough Bridge Athletic of the Northern Counties East League Division One. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own home support are treated to an entertaining encounter. Many thanks must once again go to our friends at Atherton Collieries for allowing us to use their facilities as our Knowsley Road home was unavailable this afternoon. Since our last ‘home’ game which was the 8-1 demolition of Brodsworth Welfare in the previous round of the FA Vase we’ve had mixed results in our two away league fixtures. Town threw away a 1-0 half time lead on their visit to Bootle who benefitted from two very late penalties to take the spoils. Town recovered from the disappointment of a ‘derby’ defeat by travelling to Silsden last Saturday and running out comfortable 0-3 winners with goals from Liam Pearson (2), his 6th and 7th of the season and Iain Dyson (his first!). Today’s opponents compete in the same Division as Brodsworth Welfare and have had a mixed start to the season. Worsbrough’s seven league points all coming away from home with wins at Rossington Main (0-3), current league leaders Pontefract Collieries (1-2) and unbeaten Bottesford Town (0-0). In the FA Vase an Adam Podmore second half winner ousted Cheadle Town after the Vodkat League One side had taken an early lead at Park Road. Our next fixture should, subject to any replays, see the lads travel to Formby on Tuesday (21st Sept) evening for another tough Vodkat League Premier Division fixture and next Saturday will see Lee and the lads try to gain some revenge for the FA Cup defeat when we travel to Glossop North End for a league encounter. Our final home game at Knowsley Road will be on Tuesday 28th September when New Mills will be our visitors (hopefully their game will achieve in a positive result and we won’t lose out to a replay!!) To commemorate our departure there will be a half time ’crossbar challenge’ with a lucky winner receiving a ‘weekend away’ (car, hotel and meals) provided by Johnsons Toyota Liverpool. We are currently arranging for some of our Junior teams to take part in a ‘warm-up’ match - watch the club’s website and message boards for confirmation. Enjoy the game . . . . In Town Today . . . Worsbrough Bridge Athletic originated in 1923 as Worsbrough Bridge St. James FC, named after the local Parish Church and, after WW2 in 1947 they reformed as Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Club playing both football and cricket. The club purchased the Park Road ground from a local land owner in 1953 and, in 1959 entered into a partnership with the local Miners’ Welfare Scheme, enabling development of the facilities. This resulted in the club’s full name of Worsbrough Bridge Miners’ Welfare & Athletic FC, although the truncated version is more often (and more sensibly) used. Success in the local Barnsley Leagues came to Park Road in the 1950's being League Champions and Barnsley Beckett Hospital Cup and Challenge Cup Winners. A partnership with the local Miners Welfare Scheme was entered into in 1959, enabling the development of the ground and facilities. In 1962 Worsbrough graduated to the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League, enjoying both League and Cup successes in the 1960's. Entry into the third division of the then Yorkshire League was achieved in 1971, with rapid promotion to the first division. Notable results were gained in the Amateur Cup, a highlight being the heavy defeat of Penrith, from the mighty Northern League, in 1971. Football had been played on the ground well before WW2, but Bridge had moved in 1947 after reforming. The ground has always been a three-sided venue, catering for both winter and summer sports. The partnership with the Welfare enabled the building of the changing rooms and Welfare Hall in the early 1960s and, some ten years later the stand was built into the grass banking that runs along one side of the ground. For those not wishing to sit, the summit of the bank provides a good view although the stand does obstruct this to some degree. The shallow brick dugouts, built onto the front of the stand have since been extended whilst the steel roof fascia, with its distinctive diamond cut-out design, can also be seen at a few other Yorkshire grounds such as Pontefract Collieries FC, and South Kirkby Colliery FC in Stockingate. In 1971 the record attendance of 1,603 was recorded for the visit of Blyth Spartans in the FA Amateur Cup, although the unofficial figure was apparently nearer 2,500. On the amalgamation of the Yorkshire and the Midland Leagues in 1982, the Club was among the founders members of the Northern Counties East League - in which they still compete. Worsbrough are the only Barnsley Club in the F A Non League Pyramid System. Financial backing from the Miners’ Welfare ended in in the early 1990s with the demise of the Mining Industry. Nevertheless, ground improvements continued with the addition of floodlights in November 1993. There is a an area of hard standing with some rather pointless crush barriers at the bridge end of the ground, just in front of the River Dove and although there were plans to add cover along this side of the ground, this has yet to come to fruition. Throughout the Clubs history a number of former Bridge players have progressed to careers in professional football – most notably; Mick McCarthy, ex-Republic of Ireland International and Manager and now Wolves Manager; Mick Wadsworth, former F A Youth Coach and ex-Manager of Huddersfield Town; Geoff Horsfield, ex Sheffield Utd; John Schofield, ex-Doncaster, Hull, Mansfield and Lincoln City. In addition to numerous players who have moved on to major Non-League Clubs.

Match Report Sat 11th Sept 2010; Vodkat League, Premier Division - Silsden 0-3 St Helens Town Town finally turned their promise into points this afternoon at Silsden as they netted whilst on top and took the fight out of their hosts, doubling their league points tally in the process. It could have been very different had the hosts took an early chance when Sam Heap caught Dave Garnell on the ball on 25 yards from goal, the striker advanced but shot well wide of the right hand post with Town being grateful for the let off. At the other end of the park the visitors started to find their footing as Iain Dyson played a one, two with strike partner Liam Pearson before Silsden’s James Nettleton got a vital interception in to derail the attack. Moments later John Elias started a counter finding Pearson who fed Ben Kay on the edge of the box but his shot went over the bar. The pressure told after 11 minutes when the visitors turned their possession into a goal. Good work by Karl Aldridge on the right saw him deliver to Dyson who beat his marker before firing home for his first goal of the current campaign. Dyson was soon in the action at the other end of the park, this time thwarting David Gray by clearing his goalbound effort away from danger. Town were finding plenty of joy down their right flank and this route almost paid dividends again after 18 minutes when Aldridge found time to deliver a ball towards Daley Woods in the area but the winger could not take the ball in his stride and the chance was lost. Silsden should have levelled on 21 minutes when a flowing move culminated with Barnes feeding Lee Thompson he somehow managed to shoot wide of the left hand upright when it seemed easier to score. The illusive second goal for Town came just after the half hour mark as Elias intercepted a home throw in just into the Town half and linked with Marc Stephens who sprayed the ball out to Woods on the left wing he sent the ball into the Silsden box and Pearson applied the finish heading powerfully past the home stopper. With the half drawing to a close a free kick on the edge of the Silsden box almost saw Aldridge make it 3-0 but a good reaction save from Chris Thompson kept Town two goals to the good at the interval. The elements which had aided Town during the first period were now helping the hosts but the two goal lead had given St Helens belief and indeed it was the visitors who had the first chance of the second stanza when Woods advanced down the left and beat his man and sent a cross into the box, this broke to Mark Evans on the edge of the area but he shot wide of the left hand post. A Silsden corner from the left caused some issues in the Town box as the wind whipped the delivery off the crossbar and the loose ball broke to Heap but he shot across the face of goal and the loose ball was cleared. Somewhat against the run of play Town made it 3-0, a defensive mix up between Nettleton and Barraclough saw Pearson latch onto the loose ball before advancing and shooting the ball home past the goalkeeper from a tight angle to secure the three points for Town. In the closing stages it took some great goalkeeping from Dale Newbrook to secure the first clean sheet of the season. Daniel Bathers sent in a dangerous free kick from the left which struck the crossbar and caused a melee in the 6 yard box, Heap got a shot off and it took an outstanding save from Newbrook at close quarters to push the effort over the bar and ensure Town returned to Merseyside with all three points and a clean sheet. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right below) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club. Keep on Running . . . Steve Prescott’s Engage Mutual Challenge The Steve Prescott Foundation is delighted to announce its next amazing challenge - five marathons in five days ahead of this year’s Engage Super League Grand Final. Of these five marathons, Steve Prescott himself will run four in four days, with the fifth marathon being opened up to fans on the day of the final. The inspirational Steve Prescott MBE, is keen to add this challenge to an already impressive portfolio of physical feats and hopes that fans will get behind his latest fundraising endeavours. There are Four opportunities for people to run alongside Steve on this multiple marathon attempt. • • • •

Run the Full Four Days, 104 Miles Run a Full Day Run a Section of a Day Run a Mile in the Fanzone

“Running the London Marathon earlier this year was a tough yet rewarding challenge, so taking on four in four days will really push me to the limit – but I can’t wait and am already getting stuck into the training. Having fans complete the fifth marathon seems like a perfect end to the challenge, and will hopefully raise some much needed cash, and awareness for our two beneficiary charities.” “Keep on Running: Steve Prescott’s Engage Mutual Challenge” will begin on the morning of Tuesday 28th September at the KC Stadium in Hull, The Foundation are hoping friends and fans will run alongside Steve as he embarks upon the 104 mile route to Manchester’s Old Trafford. This epic challenge aims to raise a significant amount of funds for The Foundation Steve set up back in 2007, benefiting two charities close to his heart; The Christie Hospital in Manchester, where he receives treatment for a rare cancer, and the Try Assist Fund which supports those seriously injured whilst playing rugby league. Following his ultra marathon, Steve is challenging rugby league fans to run a collective 26 miles of their own in the Grand Final Fanzone at Old Trafford. Engage Mutual will be hosting this fifth marathon in their Health & Fitness area on Saturday 2nd October, where a treadmill will be in place for fans to run a sponsored leg of the final marathon. To be involved, participants need to sign up on the SPF website, www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk. Spaces are limited, but there are other ways to show support for the event, either by cheering the various runners on before they head to their seats for the Engage Super League season finale, or by making a donation. Donations can be made online via the website. If you would like to support Steve in this incredible challenge or would like to be involved in the event, please visit www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk or phone the SPF secretary Martin Blondel on 07971 792 859. Win a Brand New Toyota Aygo with St Helens Town . . . St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. We will be looking at a range of activities to ensure we both benefit from the partnership – with the ‘win-a-Toyota-Car’ project hopefully proving to be a successful start.’ The club have 200 sponsorship packages available at £100 each which will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to win the car. In addition, sponsor details will be added to a ‘roll-of-honour’ in the club’s printed and on-line matchday programme and sponsors will have their details added to the official club website. All participants will receive a signed commemorative certificate and will be entered in to the draw for the car which will be made on Saturday 26 March 2011 or as soon as all 200 packages have been sold. Martin Blondel, Secretary of The Steve Prescott Foundation said, ‘We’re always on the look-out for new fundraising ideas and when St Helens Town approached us we were delighted with their offer. We are looking forward to working alongside the Football Club and hope to raise a lot of money for the two charities we support the Christie Cancer Hospital & the Try Assist Fund’ For further information, or to purchase a sponsorship package please contact Andy Langley on 07850740894. Town Pen Pictures . . . Dale Newbrook: Signed at the start of the 2010-11 season as cover from Kevin Woods but has already made the number one jersey his own. Played against Town for West Didsbury and Chorlton FC in a pre-season friendly fixture. A great shot stopper who commands his area extremely well. Vodkat League Premier Division 'Goalkeeper of the Month' for August 2010 Kevin Woods: Very good young goalkeeper who is now in his third season with the club. Last season he battled for the keeper's jersey with Graeme McCall and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Stephen Ben Kay: Another player starting his second season with the club after signing from Wigan Robin Park. Can play centre back or midfield and has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. The 2009-10 Players Player of the Year and rewarded with the captaincy for season 201011. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club in 2008-09 season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. John will be looking to improve his disciplinary record. Iain Dyson: Former Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club's top goalscorer last term for the third time in four seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Luke Faulkner: Twenty two year old central defender who joined the club last season from MidCheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Definitely one to watch! Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Liam Pearson: Joined in the summer from Ford Motors, a prolific goal scorer in the Liverpool County Premier League. A big strong centre forward who is good in the air and with the ball at his feet and he will prove to be a handful for opposition defenders. Paul Cliff: Another young player who joined during the close season from neighbours Prescot Cables where he was a regular in their Unibond side. Paul plays on the left wing and has an eye for goal as his pre-season games showed. Marc Stephens: Young midfield player who has had a fine couple of seasons at Town. Signed in the summer of 2008 he came into his own when moved into central midfield where his movement and passing ability are a real quality. He has had a excellent start to the 2010-11 season with goals being added to his repertoire! Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club last season. After some early substitute appearances he's now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who's good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club last season after spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR and Wigan Robin Park. Liam Arnold: A new signing from local outfit Windle Labour FC where he was top scorer in the Warrington Premier Division in season 2009-10. Good pace and creativity have been a highlight of his early season form for Town Lee Owens: A strong and deceptively agile central defender who joined from Prescot Cables during the summer 2010. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defenders and beat them before Executive Programme Sponsors Season 2010-11

sending quality crosses into the box. The 2009-10 Young Player of the Year. Karl Aldridge: Right sided defender or midfield player who is another of the crop of summer signings. Now a regular following a pre-season shoulder injury which kept him out of the team’s opening games of the season. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. He has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian spent much of last season recovering from injury. Former Stockport and Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Dave Garnell: Tall and strong central defender who also has an eye for goal. A great presence in both penalty boxes, signed this summer from Prescot Cables. Ray Gore: Another player who joined the Town ranks in the summer of 2010 and slotted striaght in at right back where his defensive and attacking skills have caught the eye.

Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Daley Woods: A speedy front man who has a great first touch and an eye for the spectacular goal. Joined the club during the close season 2010 from Prescot Cables. Phil Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington two seasons ago for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Lee Riley: Joined the club two seasons ago as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition to the club, stepping up to become manager this season. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables and also had a playing spell with Town. Phil Burton: Joined the club during the close season as Assistant Manager to Lee Riley having been manager of the Prescot Cables Reserves. A well qualified coach who has had previous playing spells with Whiston Cross, Prescot Cables and Altrincham

Town’s Greatest Moment . . . The 1987 FA Vase Final - St. Helens Town v Warrington Town It's now 24 seasons since the teams walked out at the old Wembley Stadium for the FA Vase Final. St. Helens won the game 3-2 before a rather modest crowd of 4,254, due in no small part to the fact that Saints were due to meet Halifax in the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final at the same venue only seven days later. For St. Helens Town, it was a long, hard road to Wembley that season, having to play 11 games (against Warrington's seven) to reach the Final. Beginning in the extra-preliminary round, they were taken to extra-time before beating Colne Dynamoes (who would win the Vase themselves the following season) 5-4 at Hoghton Road. There then followed home victories over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, before they made the long journey to Wisbech Town, who were beaten St Helens Town Chairman Joe Jones pictured front left on the steps 2-0. A 4-1 home victory over of the Pilkington Glass head offices in St Helens with the Rainworth Miners Welfare set up St Helens Town staff and players prior to the 1987 Wembley final. a home quarter-final against Manager Alan Wellens is pictured middle row first on the right. Falmouth Town which ended allsquare at 1-1. The long trip to Cornwall for the replay produced a 1-0 victory. The two-legged semi-final against Emley began disastrously, Town losing the home leg 0-1, but a 2-0 win in West Yorkshire was enough to secure the Wembley date. Warrington began in the Second Round, by virtue of reaching the semi-finals the previous season. A trip to Louth United yielded a 4-2 win, then there were consecutive home victories over Barrowash Victoria, Gresley Rovers and, after extra-time, Vauxhall Motors. Extra-time was required again in the 6th Round at Haverhill Rovers and Warrington won both legs of their semi-final against Collier Row. Warrington produced a commemorative brochure to mark the occasion. They played in yellow shirts and blue shorts, whilst St. Helens appeared in blue shirts and white shorts. St. Helens Town's usual colours were blue and white, Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

. . . FA Vase Victory at Wembley right up to their move to Knowsley Road in 2000, when the decision was taken to switch to red and white stripes. The referee was Mr. Trelford Mills of Barnsley. St. Helens Town team was Johnston, Benson, Wilson, Lowe, Bendon, Cummins, O’Neil, Collins (sub. Gledhill), Rigby, McComb and Layhe. The manager was Alan Wellens.

Below St Helens Town team celebrating the 3-2 FA Vase victory over neighbours Warrington Town at Wembley in 1987.

Warrington Town, managed by Dave Taylor, were represented by O'Brien, Gratton, Reid, Hunter, Copeland, Cook, Hughes, Kinsey, Brownbill (sub. Woodyer), Looker (sub. Hill) and Whalley. Ian Kinsey and Jimmy Woodyer were former St. Helens Town players. The final itself began at a breathtaking pace. St. Helens captain Tommy O'Neil, exManchester United and 35 years old, set up the first goal after only 4 minutes when, after chasing Barry Lowe’s through ball, he crossed from the left to enable Phil Layhe to head home. Layhe himself crossed from the right four minutes later for Brian Rigby to stretch the lead to 2-0. Warrington played much better after the interval and Ian Reid reduced the arrears after 54 minutes. Phil Layhe restored the twogoal advantage shortly afterwards with his ninth goal of the Vase campaign before Neil Cook scored for Warrington a minute from time to set up a tense finish. However, St. Helens hung on at the end and it was a proud Tommy O'Neil who climbed the 39 steps to receive the Vase from the Pictured left Town captain FA's chief guest, the former Tommy O’Neill holding aloft the Arsenal centre-forward and FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. Sadly Tommy died from cancer in Chelsea manager, Ted Drake. May 2006 aged just 53 years.

Talking Turkey with Burkey . . . A journey through non-league football in and around Manchester Ian Burke’s look at the Cheadle Town v Worsbrough Bridge FA Vase tie - reproduced by kind permission. www.talkingturkeywithburkey.wordpress.com When I was a little boy, I used to entertain myself by ‘reading’ atlases, road maps, the A To Z, and pretty much anything which pointed out places I’d be able to go and explore when I became old enough to drive. Cheadle was an easy one, about 6 miles down the road, but until this morning, I didn’t have any inkling that Worsbrough Bridge existed (it’s just on the southern outskirts of Barnsley, geography fans), never mind that it has a football club that plays in the North East Counties League. Needless to say, I still can’t drive. I’m in this typically leafy part of Stockport with Cockney Phil (or “Phyw” as he’s undoubtedly known to his fellow Londoners) for the First Qualifying Round of the FA Vase. It’s a stage of the competition I’ve seen before, when Penzance bored Bishop Sutton to death in one of the routine 1-0 hoof-fests we specialised in a few years back, although we were usually on the wrong end of the scoreline. Cheadle Town have a charming, ramshackle ground, its sole stubby stand is alone along the near touchline, while the vertigo-inducing seating has padded chairs retrieved from a bus for the benefit of the directors. They also happen to be the most travelled non-league club in the country, having clocked up enough air miles to fly to the moon in almost 100 games abroad, where they play as Manchester AFC. Back to game, and it’s a wide open start, both sides threatening early with Town frontman, James McDonagh, having a thwack blocked in the first minute, while the visitors deliver a couple of dangerous corners, the second of which results in a frantic goal line clearance. Home captain, Ben Roberts, has a cushion of a left foot, and regularly springs from his defensive berth to deliver balls that’d make David Beckham raise an appreciative eyebrow. His link-ups with fellow southpaw, Ben Brooks, strike mortal terror into the hearts of the Worsbrough backline, and it’s the latter who puts Cheadle into the lead 12 minutes in with a driven volley after Paul McCormack’s bullish header just outside the box sends him clear. It’s refreshing to hear the home bench shout fatherly advice to their players, encouraging them to get into “good habits” such as not contesting iffy offside calls or arguing with the referee. Of course, this all goes out of the window when Bridge’s Craig Marsh scythes down Roberts with a hopelessly late challenge in front of the dugouts. “Ay! You wanna apologise for that, you!” “Yeah, you cheeky c**nt!” A yellow card emerges after an earnest discussion, but the exclamation marks keep coming. “That’s the wrong decision referee! He should’ve been off for that!” “It was quite cynical.” Although Cheadle have the majority of possession, Worsbrough look the most likely to score, their No.9, Adam Podmore – the best player on the pitch by miles – plays more like a No. 10, dropping deep to provide incisive passes, eager runs, and forces a Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

pair of solid saves from Town’s ‘keeper, Steve ‘Probably Related To The Aforementioned James’ McDonagh. Roberts unleashes the hardest shot of all time from around 35 yards, which cannons back off the hoarding behind the goal with an almighty thud, and seriously, if he’d been another 10 yards back, he’d have shattered the goalie’s hands and disintegrated his gloves. Just past the half hour mark, Brooks breaks past the away defence again, only to be hauled down inside the area with two clearly audible clatters on his heels. Amazingly, the ref waves play on to the bewilderment/relief of all concerned, explaining to McCormack that the reprieved man “wasn’t committed to the tackle”. As the Town winger was clear through on goal and about to fire off a shot, Mr. Mather, I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree with your assessment. After the wonders of the pies at Glossop on Wednesday night, it’s back to a standard Holland’s meat & potato offering at the break today, but that’s okay, it’s what we’re all used to, and they do a fine job. The second half begins at an unsustainable tempo, Bridge having apparently received a rocket, come out snarling, but it’s a scrappy midfield soup with mistakes never more than a few seconds away. Paul Whalley’s left foot slice pings off the inside of the away goal, but this is a catalyst for 25 minutes of suffocating pressure by the Yorkshire side. Firstly, they have a goal disallowed for, well, something, after McDonagh drops a cross onto the post which the excellent Podmore fashions on the right wing, the resulting mêlée being prodded home to no avail. They’re soon level, though, when Shaun Pierrepoint executes a lovely reverse pass (“he proper stitched him up” according to Phil) and the subsequent drilled cross squirms in off Adam Roberts’ shin for a well-worked own goal, if such a thing can exist. An innocuous free-kick is floated in on 65 minutes, and under minimal pressure, McDonagh fumbles what really should be a routine catch, diverting it towards his goal, where Podmore reacts quickest and taps it home for what is surely the easiest and most deserved goal of the entire round. 1-2. A sojourn up the touchline to mingle incognito with the travelling fans unearths accents straight out of Kes. There’s one furious pensioner with a club tie on (presumably on the board), whose glasses are a rose-tinted as his cheeks are red. After a blatant handball in the centre circle by an Athletic player, he shouts to anyone in earshot, “Eeeeh, I horpe tha’s gon t’ be consistent. Deliberate ‘an’ball? Ee’s let theeyer lad whack ball in t’ stands.” Completely ignoring that one of his own team did it in the first half, of course. The pendulum swings again in the final 10 minutes, Worsbrough clearing one off the line (“Tek thee tarme!”), and Scott Clarke rampaging constantly down the right flank until he hurls himself two-footed at Pierrepoint’s calves directly in front of us. Marsh’s indiscretion in the first half was pretty bad, but this one crosses into full-on dangerous territory, and a red card is flashed instantly. The game becomes ill-tempered in the final knockings, the players exchanging not-so-pleasantries, with a couple of people subbed for their own good by time the final whistle peeps. Bridge go through to meet St Helens Town in the Second Qualifying Round, who took out their frustration at being robbed on Wednesday at Glossop by mauling Brodsworth Welfare 8-1.

St Helens Town News . . . Toyota Helping Town’s Drive for Success St Helens Town Football Club is delighted to announce that Johnsons Toyota Liverpool will become the club’s main sponsor for the forthcoming season and this will see the company’s Toyota brand emblazoned on the new Town kit throughout 2010-11. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘I am delighted that we’ve been able to develop our partnership with Johnsons and this builds upon the great support they offered St Helens Town throughout last season’. Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, the Bootle based car dealership, were initially the club’s Executive Programme Sponsors for season 2009-10 and extended their support courtesy of a number of match and match ball sponsorships along with the provision of a branded car which formed part of the club’s Player of the Month awards. Johnsons were also extremely generous in their support of Town’s Bert Trautmann anniversary celebrations in November 2009. John McKiernan said, ‘We worked extremely hard to generate a huge amount of sponsorship last season and gave considerable coverage to a large number of new sponsors via our printed and online matchday programmes, club website and matchday activities. We are hopeful that last year’s efforts will provide a firm foundation for future seasons. “Johnsons Toyota Liverpool have given the club a record breaking financial boost during tough economic times and we feel that it is in part a recognition that St Helens Town can play a leading role in promoting their brand across the North West.’ He added, ‘Johnsons will be undertaking a number of promotional events and product placement activities across St Helens during the coming year and St Helens Town will be prominent throughout these. It’s a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of the club prior to our arrival at the new stadium in August 2011!’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons Toyota Liverpool said, ‘Our work with St Helens Town last season proved an ideal opportunity to expand our brand across Merseyside and we are looking forward to developing and extending our partnership so that both ourselves and the club will continue to see significant benefits’. He added, ‘We have some exciting plans for the coming season which will raise the club’s profile along with additional sponsorship monies.’ Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Vodkat League News Millers Thriller! New Mills are now the League's sole representatives in the FA Cup following their dramatic 3-2 win over Curzon Ashton in the First Qualifying Round Replay at Church Lane. 2-1 down with just four minutes to go, the Millers struck twice to snatch victory and clinch a home tie against Harrogate Town a week on Saturday. New Mills got off to a flier when Steve Moore fired them ahead in the 3rd minute, and it got better for the home side when Curzon's Wayne Cahill was red carded late in the first half. But ten minutes into the second half Chris McDonagh fired home an equaliser from the penalty spot, and it looked all over for the Millers when former Maine Road striker Luke Mack fired in a shot that took a deflection and looped over keeper Dominic Ingram-Hughes with just 12 minutes left to put Curzon ahead. But as the game entered the 86th minute, New Mills drew level when a free kick into the box was deflected into the net off the head of a Curzon defender, and a minute later Curzon were down to nine men when skipper David Birch was red carded. The resistance of the nine men was broken in the final minute, when Millers skipper Carlos Meakin, who only joined the game midway through the second half when he came off the bench, smashed home a low shot from the edge of the box to clinch a dramatic last gasp victory for the Millers.

New Marathon Target For Ashley Leek CSOB midfielder Ashley Flood is a busy man as he begins preparing in earnest to run in the Venice Marathon on 24th October. Last year, Ashley (pictured left) ran his first marathon in Berlin, and at the Rome Marathon on Sunday March 21st, he completed his second race and bettered his time, despite having his training scheduled in the run up to the race disrupted by the bad weather in December and January. Ashley said: "I did the Rome Marathon in 3 hours 21 minutes which knocked ten minutes off the time I did in Berlin, so that was really pleasing. This time I'm aiming to get down to around the three hour mark. "Preparation was difficult for the Rome race, and the bad weather affected my training plans quite badly. "I'm starting to really step up the training now for Venice, and I'm feeling it a bit at times. With marathon training, the football and work as well, it's difficult finding the time to fit everything in, but I'm enjoying it, and I'm really looking forward to going over there". Around The Grounds Surrey Street - Glossop North End A midweek FA Cup replay saw us take in Surrey Street under lights and full of gnats! After an awful trip due to various issues with motorways, the bottle neck that is the end of the M67 at peak hour and road works in Glossop all of which colluded to make my journey time double. Surrey Street was the first away ground I saw St Helens Town in action on way back when after a failed attempt at Nantwich a few weeks earlier when the game was called off at 2.30pm due to a frozen pitch. The ground has changed quite a bit since my first visit with the rickety stand which used to run along the perimeter wall on the turnstile side of the ground now flattened and the clubhouse having had a refurbishment and renaming after the untimely death for former Glossop player Chris Ringland. After entering the ground the clubhouse is just beyond the tea hut and Glossop are quite proud of having won an award for the quality of their pies. Carrying on past the clubhouse is a large covered terrace where the majority of the Glossop fans tend to congregate. Advancing around the pitch we come to another stand just around the corner on the dugout touchline which is the seated area in the ground. The remainder of the ground is compassed as hard standing with no cover and there are plans afoot by the club to develop the ground to EvoStick League standards in the near future. Overall Score 6/10

All Our Yesterdays . . . Town’s reformation – press articles: Part 2 The following article appeared in Peter Smith’s column in The St. Helens Newspaper on 29th April 1947: St. Helens’ new Town Soccer Club christens itself with a first annual party If interest, enthusiasm and hard work are anything to go by, St. Helens is on the way to staging big time Soccer. This was evident on Thursday evening [24th April] when the new St. Helens Town Soccer Club christened itself with a first annual party in the Co-operative Café. Among those present to give the venture a worthy send off were the Mayor (Coun. Robert Owen Robertson) pictured right, Alderman R. Rennie, Coun. P. Griffiths, Coun. J. Murphy, the Director of Education (Mr. N. F. Newbury) and representatives of St. Helens sport. The chairman was Mr. George Fryer. Though still running in St. Helens Football Combination as Derbyshire Hill Rovers, the club will enter Liverpool County Combination next season. An excellent ground is in course of being laid out at Hoghton Road, Sutton, and ambitious plans are progressing for the furtherance of the game generally in St. Helens. The Mayor, looking fit despite his shaking up the day before in a car accident, welcomed the promised revival of bigger-time Soccer in St. Helens. There was plenty of room for it. Wishing the venture every success, he offered what help he could give. Mr. Jack Friar, general secretary of the club, outlined the plans the committee were hoping to put into operation. The idea of reviving St. Helens Town originated from the interest of the Heyes and Pickavance families. They thought the time was ripe. To overcome certain difficulties of organisation it was necessary to take over a club that was already in being. Derbyshire Hill Rovers made a magnificent gesture transferring their team and assets to the new club. More interested people gave their help and the ground had now been paid for. Willing helpers had prepared the ground, and in time for next season’s programme there would be a pavilion and ideal accommodation. The next move would be the erection of a stand. The club was going all out to promote the game from the foundations of schoolboy and junior football, and plans were in hand to hold a medal competition for youths and schoolboys. The social side was not being neglected as many funds were needed to keep the club progressive and growing. In conclusion, Mr. Fryer was very pleased to announce that the committee had decided to [appoint] Mr. Jimmy Critchley as the club’s first life member in reward for services rendered and his interest in sport. Mr. Ernie Worrall, St. Helens Football Combination secretary, who had been a member of Liverpool County F.A. for 26 years, gave good advice to the club in Soccer administration. Unity and enthusiasm were necessary for success. The ground at Sutton will be a boon to the local leagues, he said, and wished them every success in their climb to a higher standard of football.

. . . Town’s Reformation Part 2 The Director of Education (Mr. N. F. Newbury) spoke of the disappointments there had been in St. Helens over the provision of grounds. He stressed the importance of physical fitness in education. Good crowds were easy to cater for in schoolboy Rugby, but the Soccer teams had not been so fortunate in St. Helens, having no big grounds at their disposal. The Town ground would be a big help. Mr. J. Critchley thanked the committee for appointing him a life member. He had been a keen Rugby enthusiast most of his life, having played during the 1914-1918 war, and then for two famous St. Helens junior clubs, St. Helens Shamrocks and Uno’s Dabs. There was plenty of room for this ambitious Soccer venture, he thought. We could find the best players in St. Helens, and he was sure the club would be a success. It was very appropriate that one of the most welcome guests was Mr. Jack Phillips who was a prime mover in the old St. Helens Town Club. Chairman George Fryer described Mr. Phillips as the father of local Soccer. Mr. Phillips said that he was glad to see “our sporting Mayor” at the party, and he spoke highly of the club’s enthusiastic chairman, Mr. George Fryer. Whatever advice he could give them from his fifty years’ experience of football they were welcome to call upon. Mr. Ashcroft, one of the present team, said he had helped three teams into the County Combination and he hoped St. Helens Town would be the most successful. Mr. Peter Smith, welcoming the beginning of a new Town club, said it was the kind of venture that many St. Helens sportsmen had wanted for a long time. He was glad to see the interest of some of the town’s leading citizens by their presence at the party, so that he could once more emphasise the sports grounds situation. The fact that St. Helens would at last have one first class Soccer ground was a very encouraging feature. It was left to Coun. Griffiths to introduce the financial aspect of the venture and invite help from business men in the district. The club would not be able to make any headway without strong financial backing, even though it had a fine band of helpers, and he appealed to all sportsmen for donations, large or small. Coun. Griffiths mentioned a team in St. Helens that had been successful in national events: Sutton Harriers. He hoped St. Helens Town A.F.C. would equal such records in the near future. Mr. Tom Lloyd spoke on behalf of business men interested and said they were helping the club for the love of the game. Mr. Gus Atkins, of St. Helens Football Combination and as a representative of high-class football, said that success would attend the club’s efforts given the full interest and cooperation of players as well as committee. An excellent programme of songs was provided by Mr. Will Fairless, Mr. Jos. Anderton, Mr. Walter Pierce, with Miss Irene Robinson (accompanist). Mr. J. Pickavance voiced the company’s thanks to the artists. Saint’s Alive . . . The Devil is constantly challenging God to a game of football, Heaven’s Eleven versus Hell’s Eleven, but with no success. One day God is approached by Saint Peter, who explains that quite a few international footballers have passed through the Pearly Gates. “I think you should arrange to play that football match while we have so many great players available to form a winning team,” he suggests. God is persuaded and contacts the Devil to finally accept the challenge. “Why now, after all this time?” asks the Devil. “Well, Saint Peter informs me we have received so many great footballers into Heaven that we will be able to put together a winning team,” replies God, with absolute honesty. “No matter - you’re going lose,” boasts the Devil. “You sound very confident,” says God. “Don’t tell me you have lots of great players in Hell, as well.” The Devil shakes his head. “I don’t think we have any at all,” he replies, laughing. “But we do have all the referees!” A Mexican bandit makes a speciality of crossing the Rio Grande from time to time and robbing banks in Texas. Finally a reward is offered for his capture, and an enterprising Texas Ranger decides to track him down. After a lengthy search, he traces the bandit to his favourite cantina, sneaks up behind him, puts his trusty six-shooter to the bandit’s head, and says, “You’re under arrest. Tell me where you hid the loot or I’ll blow your brains out.” Unfortunately, the bandit doesn’t understand English, and the Ranger doesn’t speak Spanish, but there is a bilingual lawyer in the saloon who translates the Ranger’s message. The terrified bandit blurts out, in Spanish, that the loot is buried under the old oak tree behind the cantina. “What did he say?” asks the Texas Ranger. “He said,” replies the lawyer, shrugging his shoulders, “Get lost, Gringo pig - you wouldn’t dare shoot me.” Walking along the pier on holiday, a married couple spot a sign on a caravan announcing: 'Chief Running Bear, Memory Man - all questions answered'. The husband is intrigued by the confidence of the challenge. “Come on,” he says to his wife. “I bet I can fox him.” Inside the caravan, they find a wizened old American Indian wearing full headdress. “How,” says the chief, raising his right hand in greeting. “What are your questions?” “Who won the 1938 FA Cup third round tie between Preston North End and Millwall?” asks the husband, smirking arrogantly. “Preston,” replies the chief, without hesitation. “Blimey, he’s right!” exclaims the husband, stunned. “What was the score?” he demands. “1-0,” replies the chief, instantly. “Malcolm McDermott scored in the ninetieth minute.” “Unbelievable,” says the husband, shaking his head as he and his wife leave the caravan. Many years later, for their Silver Wedding Anniversary, the couple revisit the resort and come across the same caravan, with the same sign outside. On entering, they are amazed to find the same chief sitting there, and the husband raises his right hand in a reverential greeting to the old oracle. “How,” says the husband. “It was a header,” replies the chief.
