THE number of applications for admission to St. Hugh's Hall was so great last year that it was considered advisable to open a third house. Fyfield Lodge, Fyfield
Road, was the nearest to the Hall available for the purpose, and it was therefore taken in the spring, and opened in Michaelmas Term, 1909. Miss Ady, member of the Hall and formerly scholar, has returned to be at the head of the new house, which has begun with full numbers. A handsome present of ÂŁ500 from Mr. Deneke, afterwards supplemented by ÂŁ50 from Mrs. Rutson, was made towards the expenses. The larger numbers in the Hall made it necessary to increase accommodation both in the chapel and dining-hall. The dining-room was enlarged by making use of the old chapel, which had communicated with it by folding doors, and a new temporary chapel has been erected. As it was impossible to build in our own garden, the Council of Lady Margaret Hall very kindly consented to use being made of a piece of their land. On this a building sufficiently large to hold seventy persons has been placed. It is well-proportioned and satisfactory in every respect. and a covered way between it and the Hall gives character and picturesqueness to the building. This year the Council invited those former students who were members of the Hall by a test of education
and residence, arranged in the year 1896, to elect one of themselves as their representative to serve on the Council for three years. Miss Deneke was elected to the post, and has been co-opted by the Council. A good many valuable books have been added to the Library this year ; this has been made possible through a generous anonymous gift, as well as by ten guineas from Miss Puckle. Books have also been presented by Mrs. Fisher, and by Misses Bazeley, Deneke, Hales, Jourdain, and Todd, and Lady Verney has given forty-one volumes, most of which are duplicates, useful to history students. Donations towards the general fund have been received from Misses Crick, Deneke, Malone, and Wardale. The total number of volumes in the Library is 2,629, of which 102 have been bought this year. But while the Library is able to provide books for the more general part of the students' work, it is still poor both in expensive books needed for detailed work and in those of general interest. Very few of our students were taking Final Schools this year. In March, M. L. Gordon, M. M. Crump, and D. A. A. Penny gained second classes in Classical Honour Moderations. In July, F. Robinson and J. Han bury both got second classes, one in the Final School of English Language and Literature, the other in Geology with Mineralogy. E. G. May, who formerly received an M. A, degree from Birmingham University, on the ground of her two first classes in the Oxford Schools, has this year been awarded a studentship for one year at Bryn Mawr College. F. M. Wyld has been appointed Head-Mistress of the School for Girls at Hyderabad,
Other recent appointments are :H. C. Deneke, Ito Tutorships at St. Hugh's Hall. C. M. Ady, M. Holliday, to a Lectureship at the Training College, Dudley. As Assistant-Mistresses :C. Hedley, County Secondary School, Peckham. A. M. Baker, St. Anne's, Abbot's Bromley. C. M. Tree, High School, Winchester. R. Arbuthnot Lane, High School, Clifton. F. M.
