Slechts weinig mensen konden zich rond de millenniumwisseling indenken dat een leeg industriegebied in Eindhoven een grote aantrekkingskracht zou kunnen ontwikkelen voor de stad. Inmiddels weten we wel beter: Strijp-S is het creatieve, kloppende hart van de stad en de Brainportregio.

Het oud-Philipsgebied is inmiddels een hotspot met verschillende functies, waardoor het een bruisend tweede centrum is geworden waar altijd iets te doen is en mensen van zeer divers pluimage elkaar vinden.

De sfeer van industrieel erfgoed was er al. De kansen die de economische ontwikkeling in en om Eindhoven brengt, scheppen er een goed klimaat. Wat nog ontbrak – een hoogstedelijk gebied met zeer diverse activiteiten en faciliteiten die 24/7 doorgaan – is op Strijp-S gerealiseerd.

Je kunt er wonen, ondernemen, winkelen, een concert bezoeken, en dat allemaal in één geconcentreerd gebied.

Strijp-S is in het afgelopen decennium getransformeerd van Philips’ Verboden Stad tot een bruisende culturele hotspot, die het centrum van de stad aanvult met haar eigen exposities, filmhuis, en urban sports. Cultuur, van echt Eindhovens design tot beginnende bands, heeft het stof van de leegstaande gebouwen geblazen. Op Strijp-S is ook een groot scala aan urban sports en culture te vinden. Bekijk de prachtige graffiti rond skatehall Area51 en het 040 BMX Park. Of doe eens gek en neem je skateboard mee. Ben je meer van het wat rustiger genieten, dan is er wel een mooie expo bij MU of ga je lekker zitten voor een arthouse film bij Natlab. Wie weet is je creativiteit aangewakkerd en wil je deelnemen aan een leerzame filmworkshop bij filmplatform Broet of ga je er zelf een film produceren. Voor humorfans is er in het Ketelhuis maandelijks een avond vol stand-upcomedy bij The Boiler Room Comedy. Wil je je lichamelijk lekker uitleven, dan kun je dansen bij de Flexx_n Dance Academy. Bij Monk kun je lekker los gaan op de klimwanden. Zonder touwen!

In the last decade, Strijp-S has transformed from the Philips Forbidden City to a dazzling cultural hotspot that supplements the city centre with exhibitions, its own film house and urban sports.

Culture, from real Eindhoven design to fledgling bands, has blown the dust from the empty buildings. The wide selection of culture, from music to the more raw urban sports, is what makes Strijp-S a good place to be for people with extremely different tastes. Not just as spectators and to be entertained, but most definitely also to participate. Join in with city gardening at Garden Mania, build a space rocket with your kids in De Ontdekfabriek or rehearse with your band at PopEi. You will also find an enormous range of urban sports and culture in Strijp-S. Check out the magnificent graffiti that adorns the skate hall Area51 and 040 BMX Park. Or go a bit crazy and bring your own skateboard with you.

If you are looking for a calmer form of recreation, there is bound to be a great exhibition at the MU or why not relax in the Natlab and watch an art-house film. You never know, it might just awaken your creativity and you will want to take part in an educational film workshop at film platform Broet or produce a film yourself. For comedy fans, evenings full of stand-up comedy are organised by The Boiler Room Comedy in the Ketelhuis every month. If you want something really physical, there is always dancing at the Flexx_n Dance Academy. At Monk, you can give it your all scaling the climbing walls. Look, no ropes!

If you decide to come and live in Strijp-S , you know for certain that you will not be moving into a standard house. Whether it is a loft in the old Philips factory or the urban architecture of SAS-3: the accommodation in Strijp-S is new and exceptional, but with a nod to Eindhoven’s industrial heritage. The lofts, apartments and town houses have been designed for an urban life style. Living in Strijp-S is not about closing your front door and drawing the curtains. Residents join in and take part, think up ways to make it even more fun and there is plenty of space for co-creation. People do not know their neighbours in the city? Nonsense: in Strijp-S there is a fun, open community of residents. People in their sixties who have returned to the city next door to a twenty-year-old single or a young couple. A creative entrepreneur borrows a cup of sugar from a pensioner neighbour. About 530 homes have been built on the former Philips site. In the near future, that will be around 2000. New lofts will be built in the railway area. Apartments will rise adjacent to the Natlab. In the project Space-S, future residents can create their ideal residential environment.

Als je ervoor kiest om op Strijp-S te gaan wonen, dan weet je zeker dat je geen standaard huis betrekt. Of het nu om lofts in oude Philipsfabrieken gaat of om de stedelijke architectuur van SAS-3: de woonconcepten op Strijp-S zijn nieuw en bijzonder, maar verwijzen ook naar het industrieverleden van Eindhoven. De lofts, appartementen en stadswoningen zijn ontworpen voor een urban levensstijl. Wonen op Strijp-S is niet gewoon ieder voor zich de voordeur achter je dicht trekken. Bewoners doen mee, verzinnen samen hoe het nog leuker kan en er is veel ruimte voor co-creatie. Weet je in de stad niet meer wie je buren zijn? Onzin: op Strijp-S is een leuke, open community van bewoners. Zestigers die terugkeren naar de stad wonen naast een single twintiger of een jong stel. Een creatieve ondernemer leent een kopje suiker bij zijn gepensioneerde buren. Er zijn nu zo’n 530 woningen gerealiseerd op het voormalig Philipsterrein. In de nabije toekomst worden dat er rond de 2000. In de spoorzone worden nieuwe loftwoningen gebouwd. Bij het Natlab worden appartementen gerealiseerd. In het project Space-s kunnen toekomstige bewoners vormgeven aan hun ideale woonomgeving.

The former Forbidden City is an ideal area for retailers, because there is space for innovative concepts. There is a favourable climate for fledgling entrepreneurs, where there are lots of possibilities without major risks or investment being immediately required. There is plenty of space for calmly growing and expanding. Your desire for beautiful design will be met at Yksi and the Out of the Blue concept store, while for fun gifts, interior accessories or a vintage dress the Urban Shopper is where you need to be. The Urban Shopper is in the Anton building and accommodates more than 20 shops that are housed in container-like units. Each shop has designed and decorated the unit in its own unique way, from a tattoo studio to a hairdresser and a florist!

Eten en drinken op Strijp-S is niet alleen leuk, maar is ook goed voor je geweten.

De meeste producten zijn lokaal en duurzaam, of worden op een maatschappelijk verantwoorde manier bij je op tafel gezet. De meeste cafés en restaurants versterken de band tussen consument en producent. Zo weten ze bij ’t Koffiehuisje precies wat voor koffie ze op de molen hebben en waar die vandaan komt. Caffee Allee biedt hun personeel de kans om hun afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt en de maatschappij te verkleinen door ervaring op te doen in hun stadsrestaurant. Zo worden de perspectieven van bijvoorbeeld jongeren of langdurig werklozen verbeterd.

For everyone, young or old, techno lovers or rockers, there is always something to experience. Every week, every weekend there is something special to discover. Sometimes on a delicious Sunday afternoon at the Feelgood Market or at an intimate festival on the Ketelhuisplein.

Every year, another new festival lands at Strijp-S. Have you ever been to the Dutch Chilli Fest, the hottest party in the Netherlands? Or have you sampled the music and cuisine of Versche Vangst (Fresh Catch) at the Ketelhuisplein? Perhaps the King’s birthday is the best illustration of how diverse Strijp-S can be. You can witness how all the colours, tastes and age groups melt together in an enormously varied programme.

Musically, Strijp-S is the place to be: festivals like Awakenings, Speedfest, We Are Electric and other big acts attract music fans from all over the Netherlands to the Klokgebouw halls in Eindhoven. In the area of urban culture and sports, a lot goes on in Strijp-S that you might not know about. Year on year, skaters and breakdancers from around the world come to Eindhoven for the world-famous tournaments and championships. Awakenings in het Klokgebouw Naast de grote publiekstrekkers als lichtkunstfestival GLOW en de Dutch Design Week, zijn er nog veel, véél meer evenementen waar je je op Strijp-S in kunt onderdompelen. Tijdens festivals zoals bijvoorbeeld STRP kun je mooie muziek ontdekken, maar ook gefascineerd raken door nieuwe technologieën. Tijdens de Dutch Technology Week is er ook op Strijp-S veel te doen rondom techniek, voor zowel leken als professionals. Voor iedereen, klein of groot, technoliefhebber of rocker, is er altijd wel iets te beleven. Iedere week, ieder weekend is er wel iets bijzonders te ontdekken. Of het nu een heerlijke zondagmiddag is op de Feelgood Market of een knus festival op het Ketelhuisplein. Ieder jaar komt er wel een nieuw festival bij op Strijp-S. Ben je al eens op het Dutch Chili Fest geweest, het heetste feest van Nederland? Of heb je de muzikale en culinaire Versche Vangst geproefd op het Ketelhuisplein? Op Koningsdag is het misschien nog wel het duidelijkst hoe uiteenlopend Strijp-S kan zijn. Dan zie je hoe alle kleuren, smaken, leeftijden samensmelten in een reuze gevarieerd programma.

Muzikaal is Strijp-S the place to be: festivals als Awakenings, Speedfest, We Are Electric en diverse grote acts in de hallen van het Klokgebouw trekken muziekfans uit heel Nederland naar Eindhoven. Ook op het gebied van urban culture en sports gebeurt er veel op Strijp-S waar je misschien niet eens weet van hebt. Ieder jaar komen ­ skaters en breakdancers uit de hele wereld naar Eindhoven voor wereldvermaarde toernooien en kampioenschappen.

Tijdens het E-moves festival kun je het hele scala bewonderen: van graffiti tot BMX en van breakdance tot hiphop.
