Our Stickley Story Stickley has long believed that furniture is an art form and every work of art tells a story. The Stickley story is steeped in history and tradition and spans over a century of skillfully handcrafted, enduring designs of impeccable quality and everlasting value. It is also the story of four generations of families who have furnished their homes with Stickley. Over the years we have received countless letters from people who treasure their Stickley pieces. Their stories are incredibly moving, and inspiring. While very different, they all share common threads, many summed up in this story: “When I

graduated from high school, I received a gift from my parents: A Stickley bookshelf. Maybe this was a hint of what they expected me to focus on in college? Ever since, this has become a tradition for my family’s special occasions. When I moved on to graduate school, it was a Stickley library table. Weddings, anniversaries, birthdays …for us, the only furniture worthy of these memorable moments is Stickley. A few months ago I was walking through the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City when at the end of a long corridor I spotted the familiar grain, a welcoming shimmer, and that sleek, simple styling. It was a tall, slender, and gorgeous Stickley clock. To me, it was more than a celebrated American artifact. It was a symbol of home, a piece of my life.”-Jeremy Block

Throughout this catalog you’ll find Stickley stories, these are real stories by real people and they reflect the Stickley story which is rich in family tradition and enduring relationships. It is also the story of connection to home as a gathering place filled with warmth, friendship and magical moments. Our own family has many Stickley stories. As a twoyear-old, my late husband Alfred received his Stickley Cannonball Bed, which A miny I. Audi years later was passed on to our son, Edward. Both of them remember swinging on the posts when they were little children. The bed miraculously survived their rambunctious youth and is now on display in the Stickley Museum in the original Stickley factory in Fayetteville, N.Y. Our first piece of furniture, as we set about to furnish our home, was a Stickley. A most treasured terrace server arrived as a wedding present from Mrs. Stickley, while we eagerly awaited the Stickley bedroom, which was our family’s wedding present. Little did we know then that ten years later we would be rescuing a proud name and upholding Stickley’s tradition of excellence! The revival of Stickley has been a most exciting and fulfilling journey. For the past thirty-seven years, it has been constantly changing and evolving, yet our

vision has remained constant: to be the most respected company in the furniture industry, whose name is synonymous with quality, integrity, value and service. As we enter a new chapter, we pause to pay tribute to those who preceded us – Gustav and Leopold Stickley who defined a new aesthetic in their Arts & Crafts furnishings making Stickley a true American icon and a great gift to the world of classic design. We are equally grateful to E.J. Audi, at one point Stickley’s largest dealer and Leopold Stickley’s admirer and friend, whose passion for Stickley was passed on to his son, Alfred – husband, father and mentor to many. Had it not been for Alfred’s vision, leadership and creativity the Stickley story would have most likely ended in 1974. Alfred’s tremendous contributions to Stickley and the furniture industry are

green became synonymous with sustainability. We build lasting furniture that is passed from generation to generation, using solid wood that comes from managed forests. Our 420,000 square foot factory in Manlius, N.Y. is heated entirely by sawdust collected through a dust collection system which insures a clean and relatively dust free environment. Stickley has an extensive Blue Bin program for recycling paper, cardboard, and plastic bottles and has recently undertaken a major lighting re-fit of our factory, offices and showrooms, thus cutting our lighting energy use roughly in half. We comply with strict federal, state and local environmental regulations and we are a member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council.

United States Congressional Recognition In 1977, a tribute to Stickley was entered in the Congressional Record about “The revitalization of an American manufacturer and the restoration of a tradition of quality unmatched in its field.”

Business of the Year In May 1995, Stickley was chosen as the Business of the Year by the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, for its “entrepreneurial spirit, staying power, good business practices and work place innovation.”

Entrepreneur of the Year In 1997, Alfred and Aminy Audi, owners of Stickley, won the 1997 Upstate New York Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Founded by Ernst & Young, the annual contest is sponsored by the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, USAToday and the NASDAQ stock market. The program recognizes entrepreneurship and business leadership.

Manufacturers’ Wall of Fame In 2001, Alfred and Aminy Audi were inducted in the “Wall of Fame” – Manufacturers’ Association of Central New York.

Circle of Excellence In 2004, the Audi’s received The Laurel Award – International Furnishings and Design Association’s New York Chapter Circle of Excellence Awards.

rooted in the past, destined for the future At the dawn of the Twentieth Century L & J.G. Stickley’s first furniture line of “simple furniture built along mission lines” helped set the standard in fine American woodwork for the entire furniture industry. By the end of World War I, the Mission style had lost much of its popularity, but today, these early pieces are coveted by museums and collectors and bring premium bids at auction. In November, 1999, a record price of $596,900 was set for a Gustav Stickley sideboard that was designed for his own house on Columbus Avenue in Syracuse, New York.

As design tastes changed, Leopold Stickley adapted, and in the mid-twentieth century he created the Cherry Valley Collection. The furniture was American colonial, crafted with the same uncompromising quality as the earlier Mission line. At the time of Leopold’s death in 1957, L. & J.G. Stickley, Inc. was one of the most respected and admired furniture companies in the nation. Leopold’s widow, Louise, aided by many of the founder’s original staff, continued the tradition, insisting that all aspects of quality manufacturing be preserved. A new era began for Stickley when, in 1974, Alfred and Aminy Audi purchased the company and guided it to new levels of accomplishments. There were only 25 employees at Stickley. Today the company employs nearly 1500 artisans and craftspeople. In addition to Arts & Crafts, which was reissued in 1989, Stickley’s team of skilled craftsmen manufactures newly designed collections built on the Craftsman ideal of making furnishings “that are better suited to our needs and more expressive of our character as a people.” We bring you our Modern group—which encompasses pieces from the Metropolitan, 21st Century and Edinburgh collections. enduring craftsmanship Finishing The legendary Stickley finish is the legacy of Leopold Stickley and his early experimentation with aqueous ammonia finishes. The finishing process currently takes no less than four days, and requires a complex series of applications. The first step is an aqueous stain followed by fine sanding, then an oil stain, a sealer and sealer sanding. After applying the lacquer topcoat which provides a heat, alcohol and mar resistant surface, our craftspeople carefully sand and polish all exterior and interior surfaces to give them a soft, lustrous patina. The extraordinary care and skill that go into Stickley finishes guarantee that each piece of furniture has its own singular beauty. No two finishes are ever exactly the same, but every finish is deep, lustrous and displays the innate glow of the natural wood to its best advantage. Hand

Enduring Craftsmanship Pride in craftsmanship is one of the cornerstones of the Stickley tradition. The Stickley motto “Als ik Kan” comes from a quote by Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck which loosely translated means “to the best of my ability.” Even today each aspect of Stickley construction is approached with sincere dedication and a genuine respect for craft. We make our furniture the best we can. Stickley’s many unique construction features make it the most lasting furniture being crafted today. Among the special features are side hung and center-guided drawers, dovetailed cross rails, tongue and groove glue joining and specially designed bed rail and casting receivers. Some of these methods have been used by the Stickley brothers, others are more contemporary techniques designed to increase the durability of our classic designs. Stickley’s reputation for excellence sets the standard in the furniture industry. We’re so sure of our quality construction that each master cabinet maker proudly puts his initials on every piece he builds.

This method guarantees proper alignment of the drawer. The center guide keeps the drawers from skewing sideways. Suspension on the side guides keeps the drawers level even when heavily loaded. There is never any pressure against the bottom side edges, hence no scrape or screech and no excessive friction, pulling or tugging. One can literally stand in a Stickley drawer.

Tongue and groove joints ensure accurate board alignment and strong glue joints. This permits increased lumber thickness for solid, lasting furniture.

Individual panes of glass are cut for several Stickley pieces and are secured with quarter rounds, mitered to fit perfectly in place.

Most Stickley door joints are mortise and tenoned, glued, and pinned with wooden pins. The pins lock the joint supplying additional strength. This joint would hold together even without the use of glue.

Resawn & Book Matched Door Panels

Dovetailed Cross Rails

Bed Rail Construction

When appropriate to the product design, door panels are resawn and bookmatched. Resawing is a process of splitting thick lumber into thinner boards. Once split, the halves are opened like a book revealing identical grain. This time-consuming and labor intensive process assures beautifully grained door panels on all pieces.

Cross rails dovetailed into end panels strengthen the case from side to side. Separation of the end panels is impossible unless the wood is split apart. This joint is self-locking even before the glue is applied. 21st Century designs use a blind dovetail.

The side rails of all beds are locked into a special casting. The end rails are mortised and tenoned into the posts and locked with wood pins. We use top quality 5/4’ solid oak or cherry for bed rails. Two panhead screws are positioned at the ends of each rail to fit into an iron casting with a tongued slot. Our beds won’t wobble or rock.

edinburgh collection The Edinburgh Collection is named for one of Europe’s most architecturally beautiful and historically interesting cities. Edinburgh’s history may be said to have begun when Malcolm III of Scotland erected a castle there in the late eleventh century, and his wife built the Chapel of St. Margaret, the city’s oldest surviving building. By the end of the 1500s, Edinburgh was established as the capital of Scotland. While Edinburgh lost its independent Parliament in 1707, the city continued to grow and prosper during the Enlightenment. Edinburgh blossomed as a cultural center in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, led by philosophers David Hume and Adam Smith, and writers Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott. The distinctive Edinburgh Collection is made of solid wild black cherry and consists of bedrooms, dining rooms, and an occasional group. All pieces are inspired by the Glasgow Style of furniture introduced in the early twentieth century by Scottish designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928).

CHAIR, 1904, Willow Tea Room. Glasgow School of Art. Charles Rennie Mackintosh Mackintosh created a number of tea rooms between 1896 and 1917, most notably the Willow Tea Room in Sauchehall Street in Glasgow. The chair to the left from the Willow Tea Room provided the inspiration for Stickleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s distinctive Willow Bed.

The Character of Cherry

We believe so strongly in the integrity of our workmanship that we offer you the Stickley Lifetime Promise. We want you to be truly pleased with your Stickley furniture as it becomes an important part of your family for generations to come.

Owners of vintage Stickley furniture will attest to the rich patina that cherry hardwood develops over time. As cherry ages, it mellows and deepens in color. This natural phenomenon makes each piece of cherry furniture a unique work of art. The degree of color change will depend on the finish selected and the furniture’s exposure to light. Please note that newer pieces will vary slightly in color from older pieces due to this characteristic, even if they are in the same finish.

We offer a Manufacturer’s Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects on all case goods except dining and office chairs. Should the furniture fail structurally at any time during the lifetime of the original owner, because of workmanship or material, we will repair or replace it at our discretion. Stickley offers a Five Year Manufacturer’s Limited Warranty against defects on the following: dining chairs, office chairs, finishes, and mechanical devices (clock movements, recliner mechanisms, etc.). Should these items fail within five years of the purchase due to manufacturing defects, we will repair or replace it at our discretion. This warranty does not apply to fabric or leather supplied by Stickley or the customer. Warranty does not apply to customer damage, alteration, or accident. Seasonal wood movement on solid wood products is normal and is not considered a warranty issue. Cherry wood can contain small sap pockets or twig starts that may appear to be blemishes, but are completely natural and to be expected in any piece of solid cherry furniture. Another characteristic of cherry is its broad color spectrum—ranging from deep red to nearly white, with every color tone in between. At Stickley, we do our best to blend the shades and grain of cherry to create a balance on each piece, but there will be variations visible. You are buying a product of nature. Enjoy the organic character of each piece.
