The Oldest American Furniture Company
Throughout the Years There have been many American furniture manufacturers who have roots back into the Eighteenth Century, but it would be a rare company indeed to have survived and grown as it heads into the Twenty-First Century. Nichols & Stone is one such manufacturer. As early as 1762, there was a Nichols Brothers Chair Manufactory in Westminster, Massachusetts busily making chairs by hand for a struggling English colony. The bewhiskered Nicholses, too numerous to mention, produced high quality chairs and son followed father as the skills were passed from generation to generation.

One area pioneered by Nichols & Stone in the 1930’s and 1940’s was consumer advertising. The company created advertisements for popular magazines and communicated directly to the consumer. The ads featured Windsor chairs in realistic artwork room settings and offered instructional booklets to any reader interested enough to clip the coupon in the corner of the advertisement. The company also attached a tag to each chair telling the historical importance of the authentic design. L. & J.G. Stickley of Manlius, New York, the high-end casegoods and upholstery manufacturer owned by the Audi family, has recently purchased the intellectual property, designs and other assets of Nichols & Stone of Gardner, Massachusetts. The two companies combine for over 250 years of fine furniture manufacturing history and share many similarities. The parallels between them are remarkable and each has an accomplished family tree that has spanned several generations. Edward Audi and his mother, Aminy Audi have a great deal of respect for Nichols & Stone and believe it is a perfect addition to the Stickley family of companies. With Tuck Nichols’ help, they are committed to preserving the legacy of this highly esteemed company and growing its product line far beyond this initial offering.
Carlton E. “Tuck” Nichols, Jr. is the 8th generation Nichols. He followed his father, Carlton E. Nichols, Sr., who was responsible for bringing new technology, new machinery, and new processes to the Nichols & Stone operations throughout the 50’s and 60’s. Tuck entered the business in 1968 and is credited for continuing the sophisicated machinery and expanding the company’s product assortment into a wide range of products. He is dedicated to continuing the tradition of Nichols & Stone craftsmanship as a new chapter unfolds in its enduring legacy. Making Furniture The Old Fashioned Way...By Hand For over one hundred and fifty years, eight generations of Nichols & Stone craftsmen and craftswomen have been creating beautiful solid wood furniture by hand. They understood, like their fathers and grandfathers before them, that woodworking is a practice of feel and touch, of seeing with a practical eye how the boards will cut, will sand, will stain. Certainly today’s technology helps saw the lengths, shave the thickness, and bore the holes to a millimeter of exactness to keep the consistancy to a level standard, but it remains the steady eye and hand of the craftsman to maintain the quality that’s built into each piece. Today we pause to pay tribute to the thousands of employees of Nichols & Stone for their contributions since 1857 to the world of fine furniture.

Chair Construction
Antique lovers continue to drop us letters telling how they’ve come across an original Nichols & Stone chair dating back to the 1800’s. The chairs seem to last forever and even today, some of the tried and true chair manufacturing techniques from decades ago are still used. You can count on one hand the chair makers who use the lost art of steambending and mortise/tenon construction and other methods shown below.
Mortise Joints Many chair structural components such as this chair back are joined together using a tenon end forced into a smaller mortised opening.
Steambent For Beauty Steam bending is the art of boiling wood in water for several hours, then moulding it under intense pressure to dry in a permanently bent shape.
Deep Saddle Seat Seats are made from thick planks turned in different directions and glued together forming a solid panel stronger than a similar width of solid wood.
The graceful curve is achieved in one piece instead of several pieces glued together with unslightly glue joints.
Special scooping blades shape the seat out of the solid wood panels to form a “saddle” which provides a special comfort.
WEdged Posts After the post is twisted and glued up through the seat panel or arm section, it is wedged with small wood pieces much like an axehead.
pinned for security At stress points such as back spindles and leg stretchers, small pins are inserted as a final precaution to the joint opening in the future.
Corners Blocked Most chairs are corner blocked on all four sides. The blocks are attached with glue and screws for a tight joint and added frame strength.
The wedge is cut off flush with the surface, sealed and sanded to accept the final finish coats.
Very few chair makers go to this trouble to insure their chairs last for generations.
These high strength finger slots in the seat rails assure a strong fit that won’t rack or twist.
The end is glued and wedged into the snug opening to provide a strong joint.
Compressed Joints A tried and true method of connecting legs to a chair seat is this compressed tenon joint whereby the leg end is “ribbed” with deep cuts, glued, and forced up into the seat hole where the compressed tenon will expand and form a tight, snug bond.
Handwoven seats Our fiber seats are still handmade with the most long lasting, durable weave pattern. All four sides are woven toward the center for maximum strength.

Table Construction
As you admire the handsome styles, beautiful finishes, and practical function of the filler leaves; you can be confident that each table was built with quality materials and hand craftsmanship. Below are some of the constuction methods used to build in long lasting wear and service over the life of your table.
Corner Leg Bracing Each table leg is held firmly in place by a strong corner bolt system. Legs can be easily removed for shipping or for changing leg styles in the future.
Wood Table Slides A sign of a good quality table is the wood table slides below the top. Easy to open to drop-in leaves, the solid wood slides add rigidity and strength to the table top. On larger tables, a series of gears help one person to open both ends at once.
Interlocking Aprons Table leaves use directional pins that fit into holes to help alignment and assure a snug fit. Many leaves also have matching aprons to continue the top design and disguise where the leaves are located
Easy To Close Table Locks Located beneath both sides of an extention table, these brass locks keep a table tightly closed when in use with and without filler leaves to insure that the table doesn’t open accidentally.
4 3
2 1
Support Blocks Solid wood blocks are positioned below the top and connect the side apron to the top around the perimeter. Blocks hold the top securely in place and prevent warping and racking over the years of service.
10
Leaves Are Matched to Each Table Each filler leaf is made to fit only one table. The handfitted leaves are numbered so they fit into the correct sequence when used to expand the table
New Apron Edge The natural expansion season to season of solid wood requires a narrow gap between the apron below the table halves. This offset gap design hides unsightly “see through” for a better presentation.
Protective Finish As explained in more detail on page 64, a clear protective finish is applied to all table tops. The protective finish allows spills to be wiped off without any permanent stains.

Cabinet Construction
Back in time, furniture manufacturers were known as “cabinet makers - a skilled craft that many times recognized the maker for his special touches and style. His cabinetry became his reputation thus most attention was paid to his construction methods and craftsmanship built into each piece produced. The legacy lives on at Nichols & Stone as you read over our unique approach to cabinet constuction.
Mortise joinery Just like our chair construction, mortise and tenon joints are used throughout our cabinets. It takes longer to do and thus costs more, but the resulting extremely rigid construction eliminates case racking and shifting.
dust proof panels Panels are placed between each drawer to seal the dust and particles from the contents inside.
fitted doors When doors are custom fitted to each case frame, it assures that the door will fit properly with no gaps.
Panels add more stability to the entire case which eliminates racking which causes drawers to stick.
This results in a smooth, free swinging door operation and doors look straight and even.
dovetail drawers A quality signal of a well-made drawer, these dovetail joints hold the fronts and backs onto the drawer sides.
wood drawer guide A wood on wood guide system is found on better made furniture. The center guide assures continuous drawer alignment with no racking or squeaking for a smooth and quiet drawer operation for years.
flush fitted backs A flush back panel fits inside the wood frame to add rigidity to the entire cabinet.
Drawers will remain tightly together and square for years of trouble-free service.
12
corner blocks & levelers Corner blocks are used at stress joints to reinforce the joint, particularly at corners. Here a wood block is screwed and glued to a leg for strength. Notice the screw turn leveler to overcome uneven floors.
Screws are used for a more permanent connection than staples or nails; and provide a cleaner appearance.

Hand Planed Tables We offer hand-planing on selected table tops. Replicating vintage furniture manufacturing, this feature is actually completed by our craftsmen using a real hand plane and finishing the tops to the tables. True to the nature of hand-planing our tops will feature tear-outs, chatter marks and grooves. The blades on hand planes would wear down and show these characteristics. Hand-planing is available on 1660, 2590, 2690 and 2691 tables only.

For Over 150 Years... Nichols & Stone has built a reputation as a manufacturer that knows what their customers are looking for, keeping pace with all the latest trends. Throughout this catalog are examples of different colored stains and paint finishes on all styles of chairs, tables and cabinets. This flexibility in color choice is what sets Nichols & Stone apart from other manufacturers. Within this “oldest furniture name in America” is one of the most sophisticated finish lines in the country. With a comprehensive selection of wood stains and paints, and the ability to combine two different finish treatments on one piece of furniture, it’s no wonder that retailers often consider Nichols & Stone to be virtually a custom furniture shop. The assortment you see in this catalog reflect... Authentic colors When our design team selected the paint color “Maize”, they studied the entire yellow spectrum, including faded antiques, to come up with this particular tone. Worn Edges The craftsman in this photo is rubbing the top coat off the edge of this seat to allow the wood color below to show. It’s a combination of sandpaper and rags to create this “worn” look. Distressed Surfaces Authentic antiques are hard to find and sometimes, prohibitively expensive. That’s why our stylists have engineered ways to add “aging effects” to the fronts of drawers and doors. Paint build up When cherished furniture stays in a family over several generations, it seems each new owner feels an obligation to repaint the piece. Over the years of stripping and painting, some of the old colors remain in the crevices and corners...an antique effect we can duplicate.

Nichols & Stone Enviro-Garde Finish
Resists Spills and Stains
Helps Eliminate Watermarks
The highly resistant finish seals out common household liquids, allowing time to wipe up before the spill becomes a stain.
Nichols & Stone’s Enviro-Garde high solids finish resists absorption of moisture left by cold drinks on tables. Wiping up promptly will eliminate white watermarks.
Solid Wood Table Tops That Are EASY To Care For Your Nichols & Stone solid wood table comes with our Enviro-Garde finish. Should you spill on the table top, or have a cold glass drip on the table top, just wipe it up with a soft towel. Some of the common household liquids this finish protects against are: • cold and warm water • vinegar • most soaps and detergents • lighter fluid • oils and fats • fruits • coffee, tea and cocoa • catsup
64
Some tips on caring for your table: • If using a polish or wax use only non-silicone products. • When a hot dish, or cup, is placed directly onto a solid wood top, moisture may be drawn from the wood and trapped under the topcoat causing discoloration. To prevent this we suggest using hot pads, or trivets with soft bottoms, to protect the table top. • Sunlight is not a friend of solid wood furniture and prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight can discolor the finish. Please be careful so as not to place furniture in direct sun and move accessories around so they don’t mask the sun and discolor the top unevenly. Remember, solid wood furniture ages beautifully as exposure to light and natural oils affect its color and patina. With minimum care and attention your Nichols & Stone furniture will last many years.
