Stickley Pasadena Bungalow Collection

Page 1

A STICKLEY TRIBUTE TO A TREASURED AND TIMELESS DESIGN INFLUENCE FROM THE PACIFIC COAST The Pasadena Bungalow Collection draws its inspiration from the works of Charles and Henry Greene, renowned California-based architects of the late 19th and early 20th century. The Greene brothers brought the Arts & Crafts Movement to the American West at the same time that Gustav and Leopold Stickley were championing it in New York state and Frank Lloyd Wright was pioneering it in the mid-west. The Greenes believed in a totally designed environment, encompassing the home, its site, and its furnishings. Incorporating Art Nouveau, Craftsman style and Asian influences from the Pacific Rim, Greene & Greene furniture has smooth, rounded edges, elaborately pegged joints, and intricate inlay. The Pasadena Bungalow pieces are crafted from sapelli wood with accents of African Blackwood. A hardwood, sapelli comes from Eastern and Western Africa. Sapelli is called Gold Coast cedar by some because it has a cedar-like aroma when first cut. Its color is said to be similar to African mahogany, while its strength properties have been compared to oak. All Pasadena Bungalow pieces are available in #131 Chestnut finish or #135 Monte Verde finish. A New ChApter

Stickley International The genesis of Stickley International, our facility in Vietnam, is a fascinating extension of our Stickley story. For the past twenty-five years we have been working with the Refugee Resettlement Program in Central New York to provide jobs for many skilled workers who arrived in this country seeking freedom. We proudly display 36 flags in the cafeteria of our Manlius plant representing the thirty-six nationalities who contribute greatly to the Stickley mosaic, and to demonstrate our commitment to equality and diversity. One of our largest groups of immigrant craftsmen are Vietnamese who sought freedom in the United States after the fall of Saigon. They are highly skilled at the finest detailing and committed to providing a quality product, synonymous with Stickley. In our effort to be globally competitive and to provide an opportunity for some of our Vietnamese employees to return home, some permanently and others for periodic visits, we opened a high-tech production facility in

Vietnam in 2005. Our marvelously skilled Vietnamese American employees have been a great asset in setting up this satellite facility, which complements our American base of production. Skilled American managers went along with our Vietnamese workers and brought the “Stickley way” to a sparkling modernfacility. Stickley International proudly supplies our other facilities with exquisite carvings and veneers. It also manufactures a distinctly defined product that bears the “Antiquities by Stickley” brand. Stickley International is 100% owned by Stickley. Its operations are managed by four outstanding long-term employees who, between them, have 99 years of Stickley experience. The factory was built from the ground up and the labor force hand-picked and meticulously trained in the “Stickley way.” We pride ourselves on providing steady employment, competitive wages and benefits, and a safe and clean family working environment. Stickley International scrupulously follows our

unusual, industry leading standards of construction. Its output strengthens our American production. We are very proud of all our facilities in New York, North Carolina and Vietnam. Stickley’s heart and soul, and the overwhelming majority of our production remains at our headquarters in upstate New York where we have had six expansions and continue to run two full time shifts. Stickley International is a small but important international complement to Stickley’s American facilities. Befitting the Asian influence behind the Greene & Greene designs, the Pasadena Bungalow Collection is made in our Vietnam plant. These exquisite designs require an enormous amount of elaborate carving, splining, pinning and other fine hand work. Manufacturing these intricate and labor intensive pieces in the U.S. would make them prohibitive in cost, a likely reason why these masterpieces were not manufactured and offered to a larger market for more than three generations after their creation. Here, then, are the antiques of the future -- Antiquities that carry the proud legacy of quality, craftsmanship, value and timeless design.

The Blacker House Chairs are named for one of the finest examples of Arts & Crafts-style homes in the United States. Charles and Henry Greene designed the Blacker House, right down to its furnishings, windows, and light fixtures, for Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blacker in 1907. These chairs feature sturdy Stickley mortise and tenon joinery, accented by both structural and decorative African Blackwood pegs and splines. The back slat has a cameo tulip design made of raised end-grain cherry and incised stems. The legs are framed at the top with the classic “Blacker bracket”, and the feet feature hand carved, incised motifs. The Thorsen Round Dining Table was inspired by furnishings at the Thorsen House in Pasadena, built by the Greene brothers in 1909. The home was built for Mrs. Blacker’s sister and brother-in-law who were, no doubt, inspired by the Blacker house. Upon entering a Greene and Greene home, a visitor cannot help being awed by the structural integrity seen in the massive post and beam construction. But it is the softness of the edges and angles that gives the rooms a soothing feel as well. The San Marino Trestle Table exemplifies that same sense of structural and aesthetic balance. The six vertical posts are joined with pinned mortise and tenon with African Blackwood pegs. The double trestles are lightened by feathered slots and cloud lift patterns. The table top is over an inch and a half of solid Sapelli wood and has tongue and groove joints.

The door detail of the Gamble House China draws its inspiration from a set of doors at the Gamble House, one of several masterworks of Charles and Henry Greene built between 1907 and 1909. The doors open onto the sleeping porch off “Aunt Julia’s Room”, and would be opened to allow a fresh evening breeze into the Pasadena home. The china cabinet doors are pinned with mortise and tenon joinery. The lighted interior has six individual adjustable glass shelves. Highly figured quartersawn Sapelli veneer enhances the buffet doors. The drawers are side-hung and center-guided and have handcrafted Sapelli drawer pulls. There is one adjustable shelf behind each buffet door.

Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena is the route of the famous Rose Parade, an annual New Year’s Day tadition. The chair chosen to bear the Colorado name is equally steeped in tradition with its classic Greene and Greene design. The graceful shapes of the back splats reflect the Asidan influences on Arts and Crafts design. Pegged mortise and tenon joinery on the frame support the elegant cloud lift design elements. Each leg finishes in a hand carved “thunder key” motif seen extensively in the Blacker House.

The Glendale Mobile Bar Server features a folding top that opens to a serving width of 70 inches. The inside top surfaces are heat and stain resistant black laminate. The server is on casters for convenience, and has finished shiplap planking on the back so that it can be used away from the wall. The Gamble House Serving Table features two drawers which are designed to protrude from the table apron, adding visual interest and prominently displaying the finger-lap wood joinery on the corners of the drawers. Finger-lap joinery is a technique used often by the Greene brothers in construction of their Pasadena homes. It can be seen in the Gamble House on the dining room mantle and the spectacular main staircase. OppOsite: AN-7348 gAMbLe hOuse serviNg tAbLe, shown in 131 finish option 232

The Blacker House in 1909 overlooked extensive gardens and a private lake. Beyond that, the largely undeveloped San Gabriel Valley stretched to the mountains on the horizon. Mrs. Blacker wanted to bring nature inside the home, and the Greene brothers accommodated her in a variety of ways. They used the Pre-Renaissance art of gesso to create textured lotus blossoms on the ceilings of the Blacker House, similar to the gesso method used on the Rosemead Gesso Mirror.

The sideboard in the main hall of the Blacker House featured elaborately carved side doors depicting a windswept hillside. The original masterpiece inspired our distinctive Blacker House Sideboards. The case is made of solid Sapelli wood, with two side-hung and center-guided drawers featuring handcrafted Sapelli drawer pulls. African Blackwood is used as an accent. The solid panel and frame sides are built using pinned mortise and tenon joinery. The legs end in a distinctive ‘thunder key’ incised carving. There are two options for the doors on the sideboard. The AN-7352 shown above has highly figured Sapelli veneer door panels and features the ‘Blacker brackets’ at the top of the front legs. Because Charles and Henry Greene believed in designing the total environment of the homes they created in Pasadena, there are many quaint details to be found in unexpected places. The Gamble House Door Chest owes much of its charm to two small doors which open to the outdoors in the master bedroom closet of the house for ventilation on sultry summer days. Fifteen solid wood drawers frame the doors on the Gamble House Chest, hinting at the built-in appearance of the original inspiration. It is distinguished by softened edges, corners and joints, blind dovetailed crossrails and side-hung, center-guided drawers. Incised detail at the bottom of the post and the cloud lift motif at its base rail add beauty to this piece. Discover the Stickley Difference Side-Hung and Center-Guided Drawers All drawers in the Pasadena Bunglaow pieces are hand-fitted and numbered, as well as being side-hung and center-guided. This method guarantees proper alignment of the drawer. The center guide keeps the drawer level even when heavily loaded. There is never any pressure against the bottom side edges, hence no scrape or screech and no excessive friction, pulling or tugging.

Over 80 years ago, Leopold Stickley started handcrafting side-hung and center-guided drawers. This uniquely Stickley construction technique has stood the test of time. Though never used by the Greene and Greene brothers in their furniture it was only natural for us to bring this fine construction feature into these new designs.

Discover the Stickley Difference Blind Dovetailed Cross Rails Cross rails dovetailed into end panels strengthen the case from side to side. Separation of the end panels is impossible unless the wood is split apart. This joint is self-locking even before the glue is applied.

It is important for us to remain true to the design elements of Greene and Greene and also to the construction details of our history. At first glance, it appears the cross rails are pegged with African Blackwood. However, the construction is far better than it appears. Cross rails, front and back, are actually blind dovetailed into the corner posts. This will insure the structural stability of the cabinet using techniques made famous by Stickley.

Reverse-tapered, splayed legs and a low-slung rake give the Tsuba recliner an edgy flair. The incised carving, cloud-lift decorative motif, and precise African Blackwood joint pins add a fine elegance. Classic Arts & Crafts corbels and through-tenons lend strength and structural integrity. Black-edged cutouts in the shape of a tsuba—the decorated handguard on a samurai sword—highlight the side panels. Like all Stickley Morris chairs this one has an adjustable back, and deep comfortable cushions.

The Care of Stickley Furniture Since 1900 Stickley Craftsmen have been making history by creating masterful pieces by hand. From designing each piece to executing the intricate details of making it a work of art, each step is meticulously executed. Because we have taken so much care in making the antiques of the future, we hope you will cherish each Stickley piece as a precious work of art and care for it accordingly, preserving its original beauty which will undoubtedly be enhanced with age. • Avoid exposure to strong sunlight. This may cause discoloration. • When protecting the tops with glass, do not use felt dots, plastic dots, or cork under glass. • Lift objects, do not drag them. • Avoid exposure to extreme heat or cold. Table pads are advisable. Trivets and placemats are useful, but will not prevent blushing if utensils are extremely hot. • Do not use nail polish remover, hair spray or perfume, most of which contain alcohol, near the furniture. • Be cautious about placing rubber or plastic products on the furniture since a chemical reaction may cause a deterioration in the finish. • Store table leaves flat in an environment free from extreme temperatures or humidity. • Do not place heavy objects or table pads on freshly polished surfaces.

Stickley Furniture Dressing It was Leopold Stickley who first captured the inherent beauty of the “aging” of cherry and created a special-formula dressing that preserves and beautifies this mellowed finish through successive applications. The dressing gives full play to the color and unique figuration of the wood. It brings out the clarity, transparency, and depth of finish so necessary to obtaining the full artistic effect. Stickley dressing may be used to advantage on other furniture as well as Stickley pieces. It surpasses other dressings in emphasizing the beauty of choice cabinet wood and in building up the lustrous patina of rare old age. Some finishes are best maintained with a paste wax. Conservation and sustainaBility The ultimate in ecological sustainability is a product that retains its usefulness and value over many years. Stickley is wholly focused on building furniture that gets passed from generation to generation. This is furniture for life. Your grandchildren might choose to touch up the finish, or reupholster the seat, but Stickley pieces are generally as beautiful and functional after a hundred years as when they were first made. The wild black cherry that is the mainstay of several of our collections comes from Pennsylvania and our home state of New York – where the woods are very clearly expanding rather than contracting. When Stickley first bloomed as a national company a hundred years ago, New York had 10.8 million acres of forest, while Pennsylvania had 8.7 million. Today, forests cover 18.7 million acres in New York, and 16.6 million acres in Pennsylvania. We buy from small family-owned businesses that have carefully managed their woodlots with us for decades. The premium white oak that Stickley is most famous for is a renewable crop. Logs are pulled out of mixed forests on private lands one at a time, as they peak, before the tree can decline, die, and then rot. Timber harvest bring light into the forest and allow fresh succession of plant and animal species to flourish. The tropical mahogany we use in a few of our collections is plantation-grown mahogany. Managed forests like those Stickley relies on can yield sustainable lumber indefinitely. Our 420,000 sq. ft. factory in Manlius, N.Y. is heated entirely by sawdust collected through a dust collection system which insures a clean and relatively dust free environment. Stickley employees take home oak and cherry scraps to stoke their wood burning stoves during our brisk Central New York winters. The remainder of our wood waste goes to a company that makes heating pellets. Stickley has just undertaken a major lighting re-fit in our factory, main office, and showrooms. By replacing thousands of fixtures we are cutting our lighting energy use roughly half. Stickley has as extensive Blue Bin program for recycling paper, cardboard, and plastic bottles. Very little of anything wasted. Efficiency and intelligent conservation are also central to Stickley Fine Upholstery. The down and feather fillings that we employ liberally are all-natural and environmentally friendly. The urethane foams in Stickley-made sofas and chairs contain the maximum percentage of soybean-derived polyols, reducing petroleum inputs. Our urethane foams are PDBE-free. And our hardwood frames are formaldehyde-free. More than 90 percent of Stickley’s products are still made by our own craftsmen in our upstate New York and North Carolina workshops. We comply with strict federal, state, and local environmental regulations. We are a member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council. We build solid wood furniture of everlasting value.
