Drunk but not quite ready to go home? Head to Sociëteit De Pijpela: a place nobody has ever managed to get into sober. What can we say about De Pijpela? A stroll down the Lange Voorhout

The Lange Voorhout used to be the place to be seen. Back in the day, the tree–lined avenue was where the aristocracy would swan up and down, seashells crunching underfoot, showing off their good health. King Willem II kept a ‘party’ palace (currently the Escher museum) further up the road and, later on, world leaders like Roosevelt, Eisenhower and Churchill, would stay at the iconic Hotel Des Indes. The Lange Voorhout also features the narrowest house in The Hague: it’s no wider than 183 cm. Try and find it at no. 32. hoteldesindes.nl – Lange Voorhout 54 – 56

The Champs–Élysées of The Hague

Under the shade of the old linden trees at the Lange Voorhout, one of the most beautiful places in The Hague, you’ll find Jeff ’s Voorhout, a french– style coffee truck. Jeff himself can usually be found at the hot plate, making crêpes or ‘poffertjes’. This is Jeff ’s 7th season running and the food & coffee are great! Get there before 10:00 and you’ll be able to steal a coffee or cappuccino for less than €1,50. May – September: Thu and Sun: 8:00 – 17:00 poffertjeshuys.nl

Here are the rules. For just girls and girls and guys, it’s just one kiss on the cheek if you know each other well. Three kisses in more formal situations. Things can get pretty awkward if you’re not clear on what to do or how well you know each other. Guys just grab each other firmly like they’re starting an arm-wrestling contest. The harder the slap the better. Or they just give each other a smack on the back. We say ‘Hoi’, ‘Hey’ or ‘Hallo’ when we meet and ‘Doei’, ‘Tot snel’ or ‘Hoi-hoi’ when we say good-bye. Eleven kilometres of pristine beaches. Woah. No joke, we are actually really proud of our beaches. In the summer, locals go to Het Zwarte Pad (No.50, tram 1 or 9 to Scheveningen Noorder strand) or the quieter Zuiderstrand (take tram 17, get off at Van Boetzelaerlaan and walk 15 minutes). When autumn arrives, most of the beach pavilions disappear, but a few stay on during the wintertime. Find them near the lighthouse (take tram 11 to Scheveningen Haven). Go towards the light…

We start cycling at a young age and love to cycle a lot. With that in mind, don’t look surprised if you see someone cycling in a hurricane, with a passenger on the back, shopping bags hanging off the handlebars, holding an umbrella with one hand and eating a herring with the other, while singing ‘Oh Oh Den Haag’. Sound reckless? Not to us. For safety’s sake, keep in mind that the road and cycle lanes are for cyclists and

Shopping in style

King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and their three daughters, Catharina-Amalia, Alexia and Ariane are well-loved by the Dutch. We like to think of the King in particular as ‘one of our own’, which has earned him a nickname. We affectionately call His Majesty the King of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander Claus George Ferdinand, Prins van Oranje-Nassau, Jonkheer van Amsberg, by his nickname: Willy. It was thought up by a satirical TV programme that did some fantastic voice overs of the King and Queen. The royal couple live and work in The Hague, in two different palaces: Huis ten Bosch and Paleis Noordeinde. Their presence in The Hague gives the city a dash of royal flair. You have to try it at least once! Grab this delicious fish by the tail, drag it through the raw onions (or eat it au naturel). Then hold it up high and lower it into your mouth. Watch out for the seagulls! They’re fast and can snatch the ‘haring’ right out of your hand before you know what’s going on.

Dawn till dusk…till dawn

You could literally spend a whole day sunbathing at the Grote Markt and only move when the sun turns. Grote Markt is usually bustling with life and is a popular hangout for students and creative people. The former market square is home to six bars and restaurants with their own specialties. Start your morning with a coffee at the Boterwaag on the sunny side of the square. As the sun turns and you start getting hungry, follow its golden rays to the Zeta on the other side. Their menu features delicious Thai food in the evening and yummy organic sandwiches during the day, including a triple–layered cheese toastie. As the sun sets, and you’re looking for a beer and some music, head to the Zwarte Ruiter, which combines the feel of a brasserie with rock’ n roll. Not into head–banging and feeling more like samba? Have a cocktail at tiki bar Vavoom. Their long list of cocktails, ranging from Cucarachas to Honolulu Juicers, will definitely keep you occupied. It proves the saying: ‘time flies when you’re having rum.’ Sun – Wed: 10:00 – 01:00 & Thu – Sat: 10:00 – 01:30 gmdh.nl – Grote Markt

Noordeinde Palace is where our King strides across the marble floors in his red velvet cloak, trimmed with white ermine and decorated with 83 lions stitched with gold thread... to get a coffee. Or he might just be making copies in a royal onesie. We don’t know because this is his official office and the palace is not open to the public. What we do know is that the King receives new ambassadors at Paleis Noordeinde every Wednesday. They arrive at the palace in horse–drawn gilt state coaches, accompanied by an honour guard and fanfare that plays the national anthem of the visiting country. They might play yours! This all happens around half past ten in the morning. Look for the Royal Standard (flag) waving above the palace, that means the King is at work. koninklijkhuis.nl – Noordeinde 68

Well, in The Hague, we have the Oude Molstraat and Le Café: an authentic French café with exquisite food. It’s the cosiest place with only seven tables and fourteen chairs, walls lined with photos of French celebrities, and all the food coming from a tiny, tiny kitchen. In the summer, after your meal, go outside, stick a chair in the street and sip your wine like a true bon vivant. Petit Paris

never call a hagenaar a hagenees or vice versa

…and, never take that seriously because that’s something that was important to our parents a loooong time ago. 200 years. They’re old. Nowadays few people really know the story behind it anymore. Try and ask a local – they might know. Haagse Harry is a cartoon caricature inspired by Den Haag locals and clichés drawn by the late illustrator, Marnix Rueb. Harry ‘lult plat Haags’ (speaks local slang) and uses strong language and some colourful verbs. Some say our King is a big fan of Haagse Harry and collects the comic books. We really hope that’s true.

The Haagse Passage is the oldest shopping arcade in the Netherlands. It was designed after the Grandes Arcades in Paris and Brussels. It features a stunning glass ceiling, pedestrian bridges and chiselled façades, making it worth a walk through. It was built in 1885 by local dignitaries and is now a unesco monument. Double Dutch

Next to the statue of King Willem II, you’ll find Haringkraam Buitenhof. Order a herring with fresh onions and look around to spot a local who’s eating a herring to see how to handle this Dutch delicacy. Or order a Double Dutch: a soft roll with two (!) herrings. Either you’ll love it or you won’t. But at least try it once! Always beware of seagulls, they love herring too… Open daily: 10:00 – 18:00

Knights and ministers

The Ridderzaal, or Hall of Knights, was and is one of the political powerhouses in The Hague. Back in the 13th century, the powerful noblemen of the realm would have important meetings at the hall, which is located at the centre of the Binnenhof. Storks used to populate the courtyard and pick at the leftovers of the fish market. These days the storks have been replaced by pigeons and the feudal knights by ministers and members of parliament. The Ridderzaal is used for the State Opening of Parliament, featuring the King’s Speech (Troonrede) in which the King sets out the government’s key policies for the coming parliamentary session. The Binnenhof is open to the public. (The Ridderzaal offers audio guide tours provided by ProDemos. Entrance €5.) Mon – Sat: 09:30 – 17:00 prodemos.nl – Hofweg 1

From a ‘borrel’ with the Prime Minister to a party with Sinterklaas

bring home the haagse hopjes

The story of this candy began in a house on the Lange Voorhout with a local aristocrat, Baron Hendrik Hop. He loved his coffee with sugar and cream. A lot of both. Legend has it, one night he left his coffee on the stove and went to bed. The next morning his cup was filled with evaporated lumps of coffee caramel. And that’s how our famous Haagse Hopjes started out! Super addictive: once you Hop, you can’t stop.

Wanna suit up and party with civil servants and well–known Dutch politicians? Go to Plein and start your evening early with our national sport – ‘borrelen’ – at ‘bruin’ café Berger. Get a drink and order a ‘Straatje Plein’: a combo of cheese sticks, mini spring rolls, chicken bites and ‘bitterballen’ (bitterballs: deep–fried crispy balls stuffed with meaty ragout). Feel like dancing?

4 3

Head to Millers or Haagsche Kluis. Millers attracts an older, slightly fancier crowd and has two music areas: house and R&B. Make sure to find the illuminated disco floor: much fun guaranteed! Haagsche Kluis is something else. Picture a small venue stuffed with party people: wall to wall, hanging from the cei-ling – you know how it goes. Later on in the night, the fancy peeps from Millers and crazier crowd from Haagsche Kluis meet again at Piet Patat. It’s no Michelin–starred fry place, but everything tastes good after a drink too many. Feeling energised after your ‘patatje oorlog’? Take your Piet Patat posse with you and join the party at Het Feest van Sinterklaas on the same street. This place used to be a strip club: you’ll be able to tell by the dancing pole. A lot of bar staff who have been working all night come here after they clock out. To have one last drink. Or as they call it, a ‘sluitdrankje’. At these places, there’s a good chance you’ll be dancing the night away with one or more government ministers. The Zeezuiper (7.5%)

robin (28, specialty beer lover)

Once upon a time, I stumbled into a bar called De Paas. To a Flierefluiter (7%) like me, the place looked like a Dead Pony Club (3.8%). Corsendonk Pater (8%) was already sitting at the bar, with his friend Brugse Zot (7.5%), while Dikke Mathile (6%) lit up his cigarette. Mooie Nel (6.5%), the Naeckte Brouwers Nimf (9%), flashed customers her legs like a Deugniet (8%) while dancing to Punk (6.5%) music. Meanwhile I was taking pictures with my camera Obscura (8.5%). After one Duvel (8.5%) too many, I came down with such a Delirium (9%) that I walked straight to the Guillotine (9.3%). Luckily, my Raging Bitch (8.3%) got there in time to drag me home to our house on the Collaboration Bloemenmarkt (4.5%). The end. This story is based on true events. Back in the 19th century lower–ranking soldiers weren’t allowed to join the officers at the Sociëteit De Witte club at het Plein. So, at night they’d escape the Frederikskazerne army barracks and head to a bar they dubbed De Kleine Witte. Their legacy has lived on. The place became a refuge for boys skiving off school and husbands escaping their homes for some alone time. For over 130 years this bar has been a good friend to everyone up to no good. Back in the day, the fishermen at the market drank gin from the Van Kleef distillery to keep warm. And now you can, too. In 1986, the ‘stoomdistilleerderij’ Van Kleef closed down but started back up again in 2000 as a museum. De Haagse Markt is one of the oldest markets in the Netherlands. It certainly is the third biggest open–air market in Europe – the size of three football fields. Expect typical Dutch delicacies like Mike’s stroopwafels sold next to baklava from Turkey. Whatever your tastes, you’ll find something at the market. A long time ago, youngsters thought that jumping over the fence into the grounds of the Vredespaleis was a way to lose the police. They thought it was international territory and so the police couldn’t arrest them for whatever they’d done. Stupid idea. Don’t try that: they will arrest you. But if you’re curious about what’s behind those fences for other reasons, the Peace Palace offers guided tours several weekends a year. It’s a great opportunity see the items that have been donated by various countries to support their belief in a new way of attaining peace. China, Hungary and Poland donated vases, there are statues from the United States and rugs from Turkey and Iran. The Palace also features wood from Scandinavia and Brazil and marble from Italy. The result is a mosaic of international styles, colours and shapes. Check the site for guided tours. Tickets are €9,50 vredespaleis.nl – Carnegieplein 2

But equally, when it’s too hot, the shade of the trees is very welcome. These days The Hague is home to over half a million people from a broad range of cultural backgrounds. They all love the busy squares in the city centre, as well as the parks and beaches – especially on hangover Sundays. On the first sunny days of Spring, locals race to beat each other at throwing the first BBQ party – partly, because Dutch weather is so fickle. We love to live here, and the Dutch Royal Family does, too. But why is that? It’s because despite its skyline, swanky skyscrapers, government buildings and history, The Hague, even to locals, feels familiar, friendly and cozy like a village. Guess city rights aren’t everything, huh?

The garden is a pristine and fragile slice of cultural heritage. To conserve its beauty, the garden, located at the heart of Clingendael Park, is open only a few weeks each year. Our humble little town has an international reputation for its dedication to peace and justice. We have all the international courts, institutes, the Peace Palace, etc. In 2012, the motto ‘Peace and Justice’ was added to the coat of arms of the The Hague, which shows a proud stork in natural colours, holding an eel in its beak, on a field of gold, supported by two lions. The stork is a bringer of new life, health and good fortune and we think it makes a killer mascot.

At Crazy Pianos, every day’s a party. A team of skilled pianists play all the hits from the 80s and 90s up to current tunes on request. Sing along while the bartenders walk around holding triple–layered trays of beer! Entrance fees range from €6 to €10 depending on which day you come. After centuries of war, the first Peace Conference was held in The Hague in 1899, at Huis ten Bosch Palace, the home of Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands (1898-1948), great– grandmother to our current King. The first bricks of the Peace Palace (No.52) were laid after the second Peace Conference in 1907 and construction finished in 1913. It was built as a communal effort to keep alive the dream of world peace. Years later, during the Second World War, the Dutch made the Germans believe that the Peace Palace was international territory. That myth was kept alive for a long time by youngsters trying to escape the police.

On a tight budget? Every third Tuesday of the month, De Maatschappij (the society) serves a free meal for the People. In the summer they get the BBQ out and have a street picnic. They have a knack for unexpected deals and events. Like paying your starter and dessert with ‘pepernoten’ on the 5th of December. That’s when the Dutch celebrate ‘Sinterklaas’ by giving each other presents and eating gingerbread. The Hague is inseparably linked with Scheveningen. The fishermen from that town would go out onto the cold, rough North Sea on rickety ‘bomschuiten’ (fishing boats) and used to sell their fish in The Hague. Often they wouldn’t know if they would make it back to shore alive. Their wives would wait for them on the beaches, often in vain. Hence the saying, the fish has a high price: de vis wordt duur betaald. One of the fishermen’s wives still stands on the boulevard in Scheveningen (near the final stop of tram 11), eternally looking out to sea for her husband to return…

Some say The Hague isn’t a ‘proper’ city. False. The Hague was granted city rights in 1806 by King Louis Napoléon, who also moved the government to Amsterdam and made that city the capital of The Netherlands. When we kicked the French out, things went back to the way they were, except that Amsterdam remained our capital. Unfortunately The Hague lost its city status. In the past, lack of city rights meant no city walls, so we dug canals instead. The canals are called Singelgrachten and were meant to defend the city from Spain during the Eighty Years’ War. These days all the canals are open again and canal boat tours are available at (No.65).

ZEEZWALUWSTR.

Back in the early 13th century, the place we now call The Hague was a deserted piece of land. The city was founded by Count Floris IV and his son Willem II, who laid the first bricks among the dunes. Amongst other things, the noblemen built a country house, called ‘Die Haghe’, by a dune lake. The house would later become the Binnenhof (No.42), and the seat of the government, and the lake the Hofvijver. The island in the middle of the lake became a nesting ground for storks, who flocked to the Binnenhof, formerly used as a marketplace, to get all the leftover fish from the market. Lucky birds.

Behind The Hague’s main shopping street is the city’s own Chinatown. Don’t expect New York proportions. Dó expect some very good food. Like at Full Moon City – a hidden gem and definitely an experience. A narrow escalator takes you up to a bright dining area. It feels cosmopolitan, urban and secret. The place is usually packed with fellow diners. Chinese diners. Good sign. You’ll understand why. Whether it’s their crispy Peking duck, stir–fried noodles with beef or broad selection of Dim Sum, the quality this family–run restaurant offers is excellent. What’s more: it’s cheap – €20 easily gets you a good, filling meal for two. I won’t lie, the service staff can be pretty blunt. On the upside, there’s unlimited jasmin tea for next to nothing. Back in the day, after having been tortured at the Gevangenenpoort (M2), criminals were executed on the square now known as Plaats. The square used to be called Het Groene Zoodje, named after its function: it was a plot overgrown with grass to absorb the blood from the dead bodies. In 1672, it was also where the brothers De Witt were famously lynched by a bloodthirsty crowd who thought they had committed high treason against the Republic. Even days after the lynching, people would still walk around town with the torn limbs of the brothers, bragging about what they had done.

From airport to hostel/hotel If you take the train from Schiphol, Rotterdam-The Hague Airport or Eindhoven Airport, you’ll arrive either at Central Station or Hollands Spoor. Find your hostel/hotel on the map and pick a tram to get there. Three Day Travel Card Spending three days in The Hague and want to travel freely by tram and by bus? The best thing to do is to buy a Three Day Travel Card for €16,50. Get a card at one of the train stations. Don’t forget to check in and out on every ride! Getting around town Crossing the city centre on foot, starting at Central Station along the Hofvijver and Noordeinde Palace all the way up to Appeltje Eitje (No.56), takes about half an hour. It’s a wonderful walk, but if you’re staying a few days we recommend you rent a bike for around €10 a day. Look for the little bikes on the map. Tourist offices The main tourist office is at Spui 68. For more info and other tourist offices go to denhaag.com/en/tourist-office. Look for the icon on the map and on the street. Mon: 12:00 – 20:00 & Tue-Fri: 10:00 – 20:00 Sat-Sun: 10:00 – 17:00 WIFI Most cafés and restaurants have a wireless internet connection. Just ask the staff for the WIFI password. Drinking and smoking Drinking alcohol in public and smoking inside venues is strictly prohibited. Some cafés will have a smoking area, so just use that. Drugs Officially, drugs are illegal in The Netherlands. But we have a policy that tolerates the use of soft drugs (cannabis). If you feel the urge to try it, we recommend you buy cannabis at a ‘coffeeshop’ and smoke it inside the place, if you’re allowed to. You’re allowed to smoke in the street, yes, but we wouldn’t recommend it. If you do, try not to annoy anyone or get yourself arrested. In principle you’re allowed to have up to 5 grams on you if you’re stopped in the street. And although the police won’t give you a fine for it, they might take it off you. And remember, never buy drugs off the street and smoking cannabis is always at your own risk. Emergency number The emergency number is 112.
