M'Balling M'Balling Ein Dorf an der Atlantikküste südlich von Dakar. Sandige Straßen und Wege, fröhliche Menschen. Bunte Kleider, Kinder überall. Emotionaler Reichtum wehrt sich gegen materielle Armut. Krankheit gehört mit zum Leben. M‘Balling ist ein Lepradorf.
A village in Senegal at the Atlantic coast south of Dakar. Sandy roads and paths, happy people. Colorful dresses, children everywhere. Emotional fortune resists material poverty. Disease is a part of life. M'Balling is a leprosy village.

Leute People Die Menschen von M'Balling strahlen innere Ruhe und Gelassenheit aus. Fröhlichkeit und Geduld. Trotz materieller Ungewissheit findet sich keine Spur von Verdrossenheit und Zukunftsangst. Sie wären perfekte Trainer für unsere stressgeplagte westliche Welt.
The people of M'Balling radiate ease of mind and serenity. Cheerfulness and patience. Despite uncertainty about their tangible goods there is not a bit of dolefulness and anxiety about the future. They would be perfect coaches for our stressed-out Western world.

Kinder Children Lachen, Laufen, Spielen, SpaĂ&#x;. Freude an Bewegung und an Aktivität. Zwei Drittel der Einwohner sind Kinder. Sie bestimmen das Erscheinungsbild des Dorfes.
Laughing, running, playing, fun. The joy of movement and activity. Two thirds of the population are children. They determine the appearance of the village.

Jugend Young People Die jugendlichen Bewohner von M'Balling streben nach einem westlichen Erscheinungsbild. Jeans und T-Shirts sind ihnen wichtig. M채dchen schwanken zwischen traditionellen und modernen Kleidungsstilen. Kopft체cher wirken eher wie Accessoires.
The young people of M'Balling strive for western appearance. Jeans and T-Shirts are important to them. Girls are torn between traditional and modern style of clothing. Headscarves look more like accessory parts.

Lepra Leprosy In M‘Balling gehĂśrt Lepra mit zum Leben. Krankheit wird nicht ausgegrenzt. Die Erkrankten leben im Dorf. Im Familienverband.
Leprosy belongs to everyday life in M'Balling. The disease is not excluded. The patients live in the village. Together with their families.

Arbeit & Geld Work & Money Arbeit haben wenige. F체nfzig Prozent sind arbeitslos. Die Bezahlung ist schlecht. Ein Lehrer verdient 200 Euro pro Monat. Eine Taxifahrt in die n채chste Stadt kostet 15 Cent.
Only few people have got work. Fifty percent are unemployed. The pay is low. A teacher earns 200 euros per month. A taxi ride to the next town costs 15 cents.

Fisch Fish Die meisten M채nner im Dorf sind Fischer. Das Einkommen sinkt von Jahr zu Jahr. Die K체stenregion wird leer gefischt. Von ausl채ndischen Fischereiflotten.
Most of the men in the village are fishermen. The income decreases year by year. The coastal region is overfished. Done by foreign fishing fleets.

Plastik & Müll Plastic & Garbage Mit der Entsorgung von Müll ist das Dorf überfordert. Gesammelter Müll wird vom Wind zerstreut. Plastik, das am Strand angeschwemmt wird, verschärft dieses Problem. Die praktizierte Lösung: Müllverbrennung auf dem Feld.
The village is overwhelmed with the disposal of waste. Collected waste is scattered by the wind. Plastic, which is washed ashore, exacerbates this problem. The solution practiced: garbage incineration in the open.

Schule School Das Dorf ist im Aufbruch begriffen, die Jugend gibt Hoffnung. Wie in früheren Zeiten mit Tafel und Kreide bereiten sich die kleineren Schüler auf die Zukunft vor. Nach der sechsten Klasse Grundschule wäre der nächste Schritt das College. Dieses wurde in M‘Balling noch nicht gebaut.
The village is on the rise, young people give hope. The youngest students prepare for the future with blackboard and chalk – just like in the old days. After the sixth grade of elementary school the next step would be college. But college has not been built in M'Balling yet.

Kindergarten Nursery School Auch die jüngsten Kinder werden gut betreut. Sie bekommen Frühstück und Mittagessen. Möglicherweise wird ein bisschen zu viel Disziplin eingeübt, aber wahrscheinlich ist das bei diesen großen Gruppen notwendig.
Even the little ones are taken care of in a proper way. They get breakfast and lunch. Perhaps a bit too much discipline is practiced, but this is probably necessary, if you work with large groups.

Spaß & Spiel Fun & Games Alles, was da ist, macht Spaß. Alte Autoreifen. Fußballspiel auf Sandplätzen. Eselrennen und Sackhüpfen. Rhythmen auf Congas. Und Tanzen. Das alles mit Begeisterung.
Everything found here can be used to have fun. Old car tires. Soccer matches on sandy grounds. Donkey races and sack races. Rhythms played on congas. And dancing. Everything is done with enthusiasm.
