WILSON DOMINATES MAKE SMOKING HISTORY TARGA MALAGA SPRINT FOR A HAT TRICK

The third and final instalment of 2022 Make Smoking History Targa West, the Make Smoking History Targa Malaga Sprint took place on the fast 6-kilometre course on the closed roads in Malaga’s industrial area in Perth. A firm favourite for driver and spectators, the sprint had been shortened this year to meet rallysprint regulations and to avoid the newly built BP service station with 70 drivers racing the clock along the street circuit four times.

Troy Wilson convincingly took the outright win in his 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10 with co-driver Frank Guildea, leading from start to finish.

First-time competitors in Malaga, Wilson / Guildea finished all four runs 24-seconds ahead of Matt Cherry and co-driver Cade Bell in their highly modified 1982 Toyota Starlet. Third place went to Cody Harris and Morgan Ward in their 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 MR who finished 2.5 seconds behind Cherry / Bell.

The ex-West Coast Eagle AFL footballer won the first two rallies in the Make Smoking History Targa West series, namely, the Midland Toyota Targa Ellenbrook Sprint and The City of Perth Targa Rallysprint.

Bunbury resident Mark Cates finished fourth outright in his 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS with codriver Pete Davies, also winning the Targa Cup Outright Driver class and Targa Cup 2WD 2000cc and over.

CHAMPIONS POWER, TEAM PENSKE SHARE HONOURS AT VICTORY LAP CELEBRATION

Chevy win the Manufacturer Award for the seventh time since it returned to the series in 2012

Will Power and Team Penske stepped into the spotlight again as the 2022 NTT INDYCAR SERIES champions Saturday night during the Victory Lap Celebration at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.

Power clinched his second series championship with a third-place finish in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet at the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Australia native Power prevailed by 16-points over teammate Josef Newgarden, delivering Team Penske its record-extending 17th INDYCAR SERIES championship.

Team Penske’s technical team also was honoured with two awards. Kyle Moyer won the Team Manager of the Year Award for the fifth time. It’s the sixth time a Team Penske executive has won. Pennzoil presented Trevor Lacasse with the Chief Mechanic of the Year for the first time, the sixth time a Team Penske mechanic has earned this award.

Power’s No. 12 Verizon Team Penske crew also won the Firestone Pit Performance Award for earning the most cumulative Pit Stop Performance Award points during the 2022 season.

Team Penske drivers Power, Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin delivered nine of Chevrolet’s seriesleading 11 victories this season, helping Chevy win the Manufacturer Award for the seventh time since it returned to the series in 2012 and the first time since 2017. Jim Danahy, U.S. vice president, Competition Motorsports Engineering for Chevrolet, accepted the award on behalf of his team.
