Seating is a critical part of the daily social life.
A nice place to sit welcomes you to your city. Bench-space allows people to loosely belong within the flow of city life, to see and be seen. A bench is a possible beginning of new contact. Benches are symbols of what it means for space to be shared. A bench encourages people to walk, because there will be somewhere to rest.
If benches are so important, why are they so terrible often? And if we would want to change this, what are the secrets of good benches and seating in public space? Based on a research review by Dimitra Zouni and Hans Karssenberg, and knowledge from our partner Project for Public Spaces, STIPO / The City at Eye Level provides an overview.
