Preface
Opus Dei is the chief way we care for the Church. Opus Dei is not an accumulation of buildings and initiatives. It is much more. It is a family, and a family that isn't closed in on itself, but that spreads a family atmosphere around it, opening its heart to the material and spiritual needs of everyone. In a family, each person is important. So let us care for them with our prayer, with our closeness, with our understanding, with our good humour. Fernando Ocariz, prelate of Opus Dei

A Brief Biography of St. Josemaría Escrivá
Saint Josemaría Escrivá was born in Barbastro, Spain, on 9 January 1902. He was ordained to the priesthood in Saragossa on 28 March 1925. On 2 October 1928, by divine inspiration, he founded Opus Dei. On 26 June 1975, he died unexpectedly in Rome in the room where he worked, after a last affectionate glance at a picture of Our Lady. Opus Dei had by then spread to five continents, with over 60.000 members of 80 nationalities, serving the Church with the same spirit of complete union with the Pope and the Bishops which characterised Saint Josemaría. His Holiness Pope John Paul II canonised the Founder of Opus Dei on 6 October 2002. His feast is celebrated on 26 June. The body of Saint Josemaría rests in the prelatic Church of Our Lady of Peace, Viale Bruno Buozzi 75, Rome.

A Brief Biography of Blessed Alvaro Portillo
Blessed Álvaro del Portillo y Diez de Sollano (11 March 1914 – 23 March 1994) was a Spanish engineer and Roman Catholic bishop. He served as the prelate of Opus Dei between 1982 and 1994 as the successor to Saint Josemaría Escrivá. Luminaries such as Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Carlo Caffarra. have praised Portillo as a faithful servant of God. John Paul II referred to him as a “good and faithful servant” while Caffarra dubbed him a “disciple of Christ”. His cause of sainthood commenced on 21 January 2004 after being titled as a Servant of God. The confirmation of his heroic virtue on 28 June 2012 allowed for Pope Benedict XVI to name him as Venerable. He was beatified on 27 September 2014 in Madrid in a mass that Cardinal Angelo Amato presided over on the behalf of Pope Francis.

The Guardian Angel St. Escrivá had a strong devotion to his guardian angel and he encourage his children to do so as well. On October 2, 1928, feast of the Guardian Angels, while he was doing a retreat in house of the Vincentians in Madrid, he “saw” Opus Dei in it’s entirety. At that same moment, he heard the pealing of the bells of Our Lady of the Angels, a church in the nearby neighborhood.

The rose of Rialp “When I was eaten up with worry, stuck in the dilemma of whether or not I should try to cross over, during the Spanish Civil War, from the one zone to the other—in the midst of that persecution,... I received another external sign: a wooden rose. That’s how it is, God treats me like a hapless child who needs to be given tangible signs, but in an ordinary way (Meditations, 14 Feb 1964)

Saint Josemaría Escrivá Founder of Opus Dei PRAYER O God, through the mediation of Mary our Mother, you granted your priest St. Josemaría countless graces, choosing him as a most faithful instrument to found Opus Dei, a way of sanctification in daily work and in the fulfillment of the Christian’s ordinary duties. Grant that I too may learn to turn all the circumstances and events of my life into occasions of loving You and serving the Church, the Pope and all souls with joy and simplicity, lighting up the pathways of this earth with faith and love. Deign to grant me, through the intercession of St. Josemaría, the favor of ... (make your request). Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father.
“Your daily encounter with Christ takes place right where you work, where your aspirations and your affections are. That is where we must seek sanctity, in the midst of the most material things of the earth, serving God and all humankind. Heaven and earth seem to merge, my daughters and sons, on the horizon. But where they really meet is in your hearts, when you strive for holiness in your everyday lives....” St. Josemaría Escrivá, from the homily: Passionately Loving the World, October 8, 1967. Saint Josemaría Escrivá was born in Barbastro, Spain, on January 9, 1902. He was ordained to the priesthood in Saragossa on March 28, 1925. On October 2, 1928, by divine inspiration he founded Opus Dei. On June 26, 1975, he died suddenly in Rome, after a final affectionate glance at a picture of our Lady in the room where he worked.
