The Angel Tree will be going up soon! By Mary Boutwell, Director of Lay Ministries St. James will once again partner with area organizations this Christmas season to help provide presents for those in need. The St. James Angel Tree will be up by mid-November, giving time for you to select a recipient and make a thoughtful gift choice before the agency deadline to gather the presents for delivery. Be a Santa to a Senior
Wednesday Evening Bible 2.0 Schedule for Fall 2015: November 4 November 18 December 2 December 9
These angels are elderly, living alone, and likely to not have presents over Christmas. You are free to purchase anything, but there will be a sheet below the tree with suggestions. A blue or pink dot on each angel designates whether our recipient is male or female. Please take an ornament from the tree, purchase a gift, put in a gift bag (please do not wrap) and attach the ornament to the gift. Then, place your gift back under the tree before December 1 for the Home Instead representatives to collect for delivery.
Christmas elves helped sort and tag Angel Tree gifts, last Christmas.
Salvation Army Presents for children in need will be coordinated through the local Salvation Army in a ministry headed by Holly & Jason Munn. Please tear off the card with its tab from the ornament. A description of our angel is provided to help you shop for your gift. The Salvation Army has asked that we do not wrap the gifts. You may send wrapping paper with the gifts. October Vestry Report Clerk Jane Christensen offers the following highlights from the October 12, 2015 meeting of the St. James vestry: $50,000 has been borrowed from Emergency Fund for the General Checking fund. The Barnes Fund had not been updated as of meeting time. D.J. Richard presented the motions from the Finance Committee, including: The Property Committee’s proposal to upgrade and replace the video system and controller in Bishops Hall by Southern Automated Services at a cost of $10,769, to be shared 50% by the church and school (approved); The Real Estate Task Force Committee’s proposal to retain a consultant to develop a real estate master plan for the church and school at a cost not to exceed $125,000. Lee Griffin explained the origin of the motion and the need for the study to prevent mistakes being made “down the road” in our planning. It is expected that it will be five to seven months before data can be presented. The motion was approved, and the consultants selected will be presented to the vestry at the November meeting. A motion was approved by the Finance Committee from the Property Committee to repair and replace the seals and flashing on the windows of Atkinson Hall by Premier Service Team at a cost of $3,200, to be shared 25% by the church and 75% by the school. Jane Christensen made note of a bid submitted by Durable Slate for brick

Parish Family News masonry repair and window repair of the church, repair of a chapel leak, drainage improvement to the Parish Hall, and mold in the church sacristy. The Outreach Committee submitted letters from grant recipients; copies were included in the vestry handouts. Shirley Young reported that one member of the Outreach Committee is leaving and a replacement is needed. Vestry member and Day School Board of Trustees president Trey Roberts had an audio-visual presentation of the school report. Pictures were shown relating to the announcement of the National Blue Ribbon School award including a picture of the School Board, blue gifts to the children, blue sugar awards, and the banner placed along the Convention Street playground fence. He reported the renovations are complete, technology is working, and the phones are working. Some new millwork and lighting will still have to be done next summer. Shannon and Haley Blakeman, landscape architects, have designed a renovation for the Convention Street entry to the school. The work should take about three weeks and will start at Christmas break. Lolly Martin reported the Mission and Visioning Committee is working on a more formalized reporting process. Fr. Howe commented that there had been a good discussion on Sunday, October 11, about Christian Education needs in the parish.
Baptisms Latten McLaine Soule, infant son of Anna Catherine and John Soule, was baptized on October 25, 2015. Marriages Louise Hines and Michael Myers were married at St. James on Saturday, October 10, 2015. Deaths Ann Parnell Gregorie died on Friday, October 9, 2015. Her burial office was held on October 14, 2015 with interment in the St. James Columbarium. Mary Dixon Callicott died on October 10, 2015 and was bured from St. James on Tuesday, October 13, 2015. Trey Roberts reported that Nominating Committee will have a presentation slate for the vestry at the November meeting. Proposed amendments to the bylaws will be submitted to vestry members for review prior to the November meeting. Vestry and parishioner response, pro and con, to the issue of same-sex marriage was discussed, and response to the letter to the parish has been relayed to our bishop, who will likely issue diocesan guidelines in late October. The change-of-term Diocesan Convention is at Trinity, Baton Rouge on October 31, as the diocese transitions from a spring to a fall convention date to ease in the budgeting process on the parish and diocesan levels.
