The Diocese of Louisiana is one church, faithful to our Lord Jesus, united in mission, reaching out through service and proclamation to all for whom Christ died. We live in joyous expectation of God’s transforming power, compassion, and mercy in our lives.
Infants and toddlers are welcome at all services, but, as parents desire, may also be lovingly cared for by trained staff in our nursery/wiggle room on the first floor of the Parish Hall between 8:30 a.m. and noon on Sunday mornings, and for other events as announced. During the school year, a special Children’s Chapel service is held in the choir room (on the second floor of the Parish Hall) at the start of the 10:30 a.m. Sunday services. Children can hear a lesson on the readings for the day, engage in an activity or craft, practice music with Sara Bray, Director of the Cherub Choir, and come to the church in time for communion with their family. During the school year, Sunday school classes in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd curriculum are offered for children 3-6 and 6-9 years of age in their dedicated space on the second floor of the Parish Hall.

Vestry Notes By Jane Christensen, Clerk The August 8 meeting of the Vestry was called to order by Gerry Sulzer, Senior Warden in the absence of the Interim Rector, and Fr. John Pitzer opened the meeting with prayer. Fr. John then presented information in recommendation of changing service times for at least a one year test period, staring this September. Fr. Reynolds had studied attendance levels, and felt there was a greater sense of community achieved with the 10:30 service. Designating Christian Education time from 9:15-10:15 a.m. provides the full hour most good programs need, and moving the 7:30 service to 8:00 a.m. made it more inviting for those attending the early service to stay for Christian Education. The schedule changes were approved to begin Sunday, September 11, 2016. Judy Foil introduced Hannah Rothermel, our newly-hired Youth Director. Hannah will continue two youth groups: EKC (grades 3-5) and EYC (grades 6-12). She said additional funding may be needed for some programs and she hopes to have some fund-raising activities. Ed. note: Read about Hannah, here.
Josh Pesses has developed a new Vestry report form which highlights primary areas of concern and interest which was well received. Josh presented approvals by the Finance Committee, including an approved motion submitted by the Property Committee to accept the bid of $2,450.00 from Longco Specialties Inc. to sand and revarnish all of the entryway doors to the church. The JPMorganChase financial reports were distributed to the vestry. Andy McCall, presenting the Steering Committee report, reminded the Vestry members of the August 24 CPEX presentation. The Welcoming Committee is expected to have some results at that time. Fr. Reynolds has been helping the Welcoming Committee formalize their results. Stewardship information will also be presented at that time. Manette Sammons reported that the Day School is in very financial good shape with 285 student contracts. The new entrance area and renovations to the playground are complete. A new menu of after-school enrichment programs are highlighted on the
updated website: stjamesdayschoolbr.org. The Executive Committee met with the Diocesan Assessment Committee on July 20 regarding the 2016 and 2017 Assessments. The committee were very sympathetic about the reasons for the need to reduce our assessment. Meetings have been held regarding the 2017 Stewardship campaign. During discussion of the scheduled CPEX presentation, Gerry Sulzer reiterated that CPEX was to formulate ideas and present them, but implementation is our job. Bob Frazier introduced Gary Howes of Durable Restoration, the same company involved in church roof replacement following Hurricane Gustav, and re-installation of the fleur de lis corner points on the bell tower. Mr. Howes reiterated the presentation made to the parish on Sunday, August 7, detailing brick work need to preserve our historic church. He will be working with Bob Frazier to prepare bids for the work described — exterior-only work to the brick and window sills. (Ed. Note: You can view the Durable Slate Sunday presentation, here.)
A Note From Fr. Joe This morning, I had three messages on my voice mail by the time I got to the office. One was from a member of St. Luke’s on the Lake Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas wanting to know how they could help
That is just one day and one person — me — who is brand new to Baton Rouge. Multiply that by thousands of people and a significant number of days. The point is that the world is a small place with connections among people in all directions. And maybe an even more important point is that people want to reach out and help those who are in need. It is the need that binds us together. We are all in need to one degree or another. We all need each other.
Another was from a school parent at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in Atlanta wanting to know if it would be helpful for a group of high school students to come pitch in. The third was from a priest in Atlanta who is a friend. He wanted to know how to help, but mostly he wanted me to know that he is praying for me and for all of us. The afternoon mail included a check from a man who is a member of a Methodist Church in Maryland who says he has worshipped with us occasionally.
The road to full recovery for Baton Rouge will be long, and for many it will be arduous. Perhaps a silver lining is that we know now, more than ever, that we don’t have to do it alone. It was Jesus who said, “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” It is our need for the love of God and the love of each other that holds us together. That is something to be thankful for.
in the flood relief effort.
“Every cloud has a silver lining,” goes the old adage. Wikipedia credits the origin of that bit of wisdom to John Milton in 1634. The fact that we are still using the phrase almost four hundred years later is an indication of how it touches something we know to be true.
