Physical Education
Welcome Welcome to the St James Senior Boys’ Physical Education departments information booklet. Discover the unique and award winning way in which we design our Physical Education programme to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to find a sport they truly love and they will continue to play for a lifetime. To find out more about the unique programme of physical education and sport at St James please contact Mr Wassell at b.wassell@stjamesboys.co.uk
Lower School Years 7 & 8 SPORTS VISION During their first two years at St James, pupils in the lower school are encouraged to develop an in-depth understanding of the basic, generic techniques which are found in multiple sporting activities. Physical Education is taught through the medium of sporting games such as rugby, football, tennis and cricket, and athletic activities such as cross country and track and field. Physical and mental development is at the core of every lesson and pupils are given the opportunity to fulfill the roles of performer, coach and official.
TIMETABLE Pupils in the Lower School take part in Physical Education three times a week. One morning double period, one afternoon double period, when competitive matches are played, and a single period on Friday afternoons. Period 1

EXTRA CURRICULAR Our aim is to expose young men to as much sporting opportunity as possible and therefore we offer an extensive range of extra-curricular activities before school, at lunchtimes and after school. These range from our pre-school strength and conditioning sessions to team sports such as badminton, basketball and volleyball. Our cricket academy in our indoor nets and the adventurous sports club gives the lower school the opportunity to have a taste of kayaking, canoeing and climbing. There are also several competitive extra-curricular sports clubs on offer with hockey, basketball and football all competing regularly against local schools.
TIMETABLE The extra-curricular timetable for the lower school for the autumn and the beginning of the spring term. As the weather improves, the activities change to include summer sports such as tennis and athletics.

Upper School Years 9 -13 SPORTS VISION Pupils in the Upper School are given the opportunity to continue their physical development in an environment which suits them. Hockey becomes a core option for those less drawn to contact sports and ‘Fitness and PE’ is available for those pupils less competitive-minded. For those who want to take their sport further, competitive opportunities are provided in the form of friendly and cup competitions, including the Middlesex Cup and the National Cup. St James is traditionally strong at rugby sevens, regularly winning county, regional and national competitions. On a Friday afternoon the pupils have a wide range of sporting activities open to them and it is hoped that they are able to find a sporting activity which they truly love.
