GOLF A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF Sean McGaughey, PGA Director of Golf With the 2019 golf season coming to a close, I wanted to send out a thank you to all of our Members for your support. The Clubs by JOE had yet another record breaking year. We saw steady increases in merchandise sales, rounds played, new programing, and increased tournament participation. It’s wonderful to see all of our Members enjoying what the Clubs have to offer and we truly appreciate your continued support. Please make sure to be on the lookout for the 2020 Golf Handbook which should be arriving in the mail in the coming weeks. This book will help you plan out your 2020 calendar with all the golf events The Clubs by JOE has to offer. I always like to save the signup dates into my phone, and I encourage you to do the same as space is limited in our major events. As you will also see, some of our major events have been moved in the calendar due to the regrassing at Camp Creek Golf Club. I’m looking forward to a phenomenal 2020 on the course and hope you are as well. Last month, we hosted our annual Frosty Frolic Member Party at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club with over 120 members in attendance. The night kicked off with holiday shopping in the Golf Shop, followed by cocktails and food in the Clubhouse. So many of our Members dressed for the occasion hoping to take home the coveted first place spot in our Ugly Sweater Contest. In the end, our winner was Mr. Bill MacBride. Congratulations and thank you Mr. MacBride for showing such great Christmas cheer! In 2019, The Clubs by JOE introduced several new programs in large part to Member support. We have added Junior Golf Clinics, Ladies Day, and Men’s Stag Night to our weekly event calendar. These programs have helped increase Member participation at the club and have had a huge impact on Club atmosphere. If you’re looking for a fun group to join, please let us know so that we can get you introduced to an event that suits your interests! As always I look forward to seeing you at the Clubs in the new year! PS – Registration for The Shootout Member-Guest Golf Tournament begins January 1 for Lifestyle Members. Registration for Signature and Limited Golf Members begins January 15. To register, please call Shark’s Tooth Golf Club at 850.249.3041.

GOLF A MESSAGE FROM YOUR SUPERINTENDENTS Josh Parker Superintendent, Shark’s Tooth Golf Club

As expected, Winter has brought a roller coaster of weather pattens here in the Florida Panhandle! The big fluctuations in temperature are harsh on any turfgrass. Fortunately, we have been able to maintain some green color and we hope this lasts through the season. We have opened up line of sight areas from the back tee on holes #9 & 10 by selectively removing some trees. We have removed most all the dead trees over the last couple of months, with a few more to go. We will continue our tree and bed work on the course this month, by clearing out areas and limbing up canopies. Please keep all cart traffic off the green surround areas, as it is critical to our course condition this time of year.

Ryan Dykes Superintendent, Camp Creek Golf Club

Not much has changed at Camp Creek in recent weeks. We are still trying to focus on providing a good putting surface for our Members and will continue to maintain the greens as normal through the Winter. With the upcoming regrassing project less than 90 days away, we are continuing to get a head start on the native areas. We have refocused our efforts to the areas along the cart paths to help get those under control and make working in these areas more convenient and less hazardous. In the coming weeks we plan to have all the brush and palmettos along the path trimmed or removed and ready for the project to commence. Our plan is still to close Camp Creek in mid-March to regrass the course and remove and replace the sand in the bunkers. The course is not as pretty as we strive to maintain it. To be honest it is as ugly as you will ever see it. I can assure you we are focusing on the long term so when we start the regrassing project we can make it as efficient a process as we can. One issue that has come on in recent weeks is some winter weeds that are visible in the non overseeded portions of the roughs. With the new grass in mind, we elected to not apply our normal fall/winter preemergent herbicide that is used to prevent these weeds to help reduce our chemical footprint and hopefully help our new grass come in as fast as we can grow it. We are in the process of treating these areas with a post emergent herbicide which will in no way affect the new grass in the Spring. We appreciate your patience through this process and look forward to the planting and getting back to a golf course you can be proud to bring your guests

CHEF’S CORNER WHAT TO EAT ON NEW YEAR’S DAY Original article published on Thrillist.com

Pomegranates Seeds are associated with fertility and life, so eating pomegranates may just be the key to a lively new year. In Greek culture, a pomegranate is placed outside the home and smashed on New Year’s Day. The more seeds that scatter during the initial smash, the luckier the year that lies ahead will be. In Turkish culture, pomegranate seeds are also celebrated for fertility, so if you’re attempting to start or grow a family, you might want to stock up.

Black-eyed Peas Black-eyed peas, simmered into a stew with ham hock and collard greens, is known as Hoppin’ John or Carolina Peas and Rice, and it is a traditional meal in the south eaten on New Year’s Day. There are a couple of myths surrounding the luck associated with black eyed peas. Some say the shape of black-eyed peas -- which are actually beans -- represent coins and therefore encourage wealth.

Leafy Greens Did you know that downing a kale salad is good for more than just your health? Leafy greens, like kale, spinach, and romaine lettuce, are symbolic of cold, hard cash. They’re the same color and crispness of a fresh dollar bill, which is why it’s considered lucky to eat leafy greens when seeking wealth in the new year. As the Southern saying goes, “peas for pennies, greens for dollars, and cornbread for gold.”

Cornbread Any excuse to eat cornbread is OK in our book. In many of the southern states in the US, cornbread is considered lucky due to its golden brown color -- which is said to bring gold and wealth in the upcoming year. So slather on some butter, dig in, and maybe pair it with a bowl of Hoppin’ John for extra luck.

Noodles Different types of noodles are consumed across Asia in the new year and symbolize longevity. In Japan, Toshikoshi Soba -- a meal composed of buckwheat noodles in a steaming broth of daishi, soy sauce, and mirin -- is a common meal to consume on New Year’s Eve; a healthy and simple way to start the new year off fresh. In Chinese culture, yi mein noodles, the satisfyingly chewy and brightly yellow egg noodles, are stir-fried and said to encourage long life. Whatever type of noodles you fancy, slurp them up and you may not be only full but also blessed with a long and fulfilling life.

Grapes In Spain and Mexico, it is tradition to eat 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight, representing the 12 months within a calendar year. It is believed that the luck you’ll possess each month is dependent on the sweetness of the grapes; if you come across any tart grapes, then make sure to prepare yourself for a bumpy month that corresponds with the sour grape you consumed.

Cake We will joyously consume cake for any occasion, so this whole luck thing just feels like a bonus. Round cakes are typically considered lucky due to their shape -- they somewhat resemble coins and are thus thought to bring forth wealth in the new year. In Greek culture, friends and family gather around for a vasilopita -- a zesty orange cake that often has a coin baked inside. Whoever receives the slice with the coin in it gets extra luck for the new year and usually a gift or prize.

Pork If you’re looking to personally advance in the new year -- as all of us are -- pork may be a good option for you. Pigs are animals that root forward as they sniff out and eat food, and therefore emblematic of progress in the year. The tradition spans across continents; from roasted lechon in the Philippines to (technically not pork but I digress) marzipan pigs in Northern Europe to pork and sauerkraut dishes served in the States. The fattiness of pork is also related to luxury and wealth, so don’t hesitate to fry up some bacon to start off the new year.

Fish If you’re looking for an alternative protein to eat when ringing in the new year, why not try fish? It’s alleged that the scales look like coins, and in some Eastern European cultures they are saved and placed in a wallet in hopes of acquiring more wealth. Fish also represent abundance due to the fact that they swim in large schools. Across myriad cultures -- from steamed whole fish in China to Polish pickled herring -- fish are consumed in hopes of a year full of success. Whatever the preparation, it wouldn’t hurt to eat an extra serving or two

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season! The start of the new year is a perfect time to get involved with a new sport. We offer private, semi-private and group lessons or clinics for all ages and ability levels. If you are brand new to tennis or if you have played before and have just been on the sidelines for a while; this is your opportunity to get involved! Please contact me at 205.903.8743 to discuss scheduling options. Ladies team league play is set to begin in the Winter season. We have home matches scheduled for January 14, 21 and 28 at Shark’s Tooth. Please note that all courts will be in use from 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM on these dates. I look forward to seeing you on the court soon.

Pro Tip – Use the Sun When playing your matches on a clear sunny day use it to your advantage. Elect to lob your opponent(s) more when they have to deal with the sun side. Include the sun as an useful ally to achieve victory. Implement this strategy the next time you are on the court and be prepared for instant success!
