WELCOME 4 REASONS THE BEACH IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

Click image above to play or view here: https://youtu.be/g7haGM5PkH4 1. VITAMIN D Appropriately dubbed “the sunshine vitamin”, vitamin D plays a crucial part in a person’s overall health and well-being. This vital nutrient is linked to bone, muscle, and cardiovascular health, as well as immune function, healthy skin and more. Vitamin D deficiency is a global health problem, with nearly 1 billion people being “vitamin D-ficient”. The trick to quick and effective vitamin D absorption? Doctors recommend 10-15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure daily. Just remember to apply SPF and seek out shade afterward!

2. SAND IS A NATURAL EXFOLIANT Wet sand acts as a natural exfoliant to shed dead skin cells from your body, leaving your skin softer and rejuvenated. Treat your feet to a mini spa day by taking a walk near the water where the sand is looser and can wash over your feet.

3. COMBAT SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION Common sense would tell us that people tend to be happier in the warmer months and less so in the gloomier months, but it’s been scientifically proven that sunshine can make us happier. A study conducted by the Baker Heart Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia found that sunlight exposure increased participants’ levels of serotonin, having a positive effect on factors such as stress, sleep, and appetite.

4. SWITCH UP YOUR WORKOUT Scientists have documented the benefits of exercise for many years, yet many people fall short of the recommended 30-60 minutes of physical activity each day. A brisk walk along the beach or swim in the Gulf is a fun way to get in your daily dose of exercise. Up for a challenge? Try beach volleyball or opt for a sunrise run by the water. The best kind of exercise is one that you enjoy!

GOLF A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF Sean McGaughey, PGA Director of Golf I hope this edition of the newsletter finds you enjoying the summer heat. June was a great month at the Clubs with some amazing events. Participation has definitely been increasing during my time at the Clubs, and I thank you all for your support of what The Clubs by JOE team has to offer. Our opening event of June was our Couples Nine & Dine at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions with hardly any humidity. We had a full field for this Nine & Dine, making the atmosphere electric. I was fortunate enough to spend time on hole number eight to hit tee shots for the group. Hopefully I helped and thank you for letting me participate. Congratulations to our winners, Alan Higgins, Laing Higgins, Steven Smathers and Misty Smathers. They came in with an impressive score of 25.0 net. Great playing everyone! June also saw our chipping clinic at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club. The group learned proper foundation and basic practices from around the green. Remember, the faster the ball gets on the ground the better! This month’s clinic will cover Hybrids and how to properly approach them. If you want a quick refresher or would just like a few tips please join us at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club on Saturday, July 6th. Camp Creek Golf Club was the host of our US Open Championship - Pick Your Pro. This fun event allowed you to play a round of golf and add your net score to a pro of your choice from the US Open. Taking home first place with the best pick in the house was Bill MacBride and Brooks Koepka. Together they shot 139. And while Mr. MacBride won $125, Brooks took home a cool $1.3 million. You’re gaining on him, sir! Finishing up our events for the month was our annual The Clubs by JOE Club Championship. The event took place over two days and emerging victorious were: 2019 Club Championship Winners • • • • • •

Tommy Cooley Club Champion Jim Holden Senior Champion Gary McCaghren Super Senior Champion Sydney Dunning Ladies Gross Champion DeAnna Woods Ladies Net Champion Mark McGuffee Net Division (2 Tooth Champion)

Please make sure to visit the golf shops this month as we’ll have quite a bit of new merchandise. We hope to see you over the Fourth of July holiday. Have a great month!

GOLF A MESSAGE FROM YOUR SUPERINTENDENTS Josh Parker Superintendent, Shark’s Tooth Golf Club

Hard to believe we are already in July! We just had pine straw installed on the entire course. The aerification went well on June 11. We are not scheduled for an aerification in July. The sod we are experimenting with on #13 seems to be doing well so far. The course appears to be holding on pretty decent with these crazy weather patterns. Seems to be all or nothing with the rainfall! We ask everyone to please repair ballmarks and rake bunkers behind them for the following groups. Enjoy your time on the course!

Ryan Dykes Superintendent, Camp Creek Golf Club The month of July will bring our flush of growth season in the grass department. It is the time of year where as a maintenance department we actually try to slow down the growth to keep from having excesses of clippings all over the place. We do this with various products, but mainly with an active ingredient called Trinexapac ethyl. This tends to leave the grass tinged a little but it will usually go away after the second mowing. This product helps to reduce the vertical growth of the plant while helping to maintain a consistent turf stand without the flushes of growth that result from rains and the release of fertilizers as the temperatures and day light hours increase. Our new sod spots are doing well. We will continue to monitor and treat them until they no longer stand out. Our goal is to have them to that point by the end of the month. On June 24th we aerified greens. The aerification came out well overall, although we did have a few spots that heaved up and will be replaced with plugs off of our back chipping green. Moving forward we will continue to try and rectify the weeds in the bunkers. We are experimenting with a newer chemical called Specticle Total to see if we can get them under control for longer periods than our previous chemical methods. I apologize for the unsightliness of them and assure you we will continue to do our best to correct our bunker issues. Please remember to follow the cart signs in the fairways and exit the hole at that point to reduce wear around greens. I am not a huge fan of rope on the course and I think we can avoid adding it to the majority of locations if we can just look out for wear areas and avoid them when possible. Try to abide by the 90 degree rule and ride on the path until you get to the distance where the first ball in the cart is located. Too many get off the path at the first grass past the tee markers and drive another 150 to 200 yards down the middle of the hole till they get to their ball. This creates wear that we can’t grow enough to overcome. Thank you for doing your best to help us out. Due to the increase in play expected this month our cultural practices such as verticutting and topdressing to the greens will be minimized until our closed week August 5 – 9. Thank you for all your support!

CHEF’S CORNER COCONUT LIME VINAIGRETTE

7 TIPS FOR PERFECT SUMMER BARBECUING

Recipe courtesy of: Dan Bower, Executive Chef at WaterSound Beach Club

Article originally featured on foodandwine.com

A new Member favorite is the Caribbean Mango Salad Bowl from Costa Chica. One of the key ingredients to the bowl is the Coconut Lime Vinaigrette dressing. Members have been raving about it, so I wanted to share the recipe for you to try with your favorite dishes. Enjoy! INGREDIENTS • 1 cup Lime Juice • ½ cup Honey • 1 bunch Cilantro • 1 tbsp Garlic, minced • Salt and Pepper to taste • 3 cups Olive Oil Blend • 4 oz Coconut Purée or Coconut Oil

DIRECTIONS 1. Put lime juice, honey, garlic and coconut purée or oil in blender. 2. Pulse repeatedly until smooth and incorporated. 3. Add cilantro leaves. 4. Turn on medium speed and slowly incorporate olive oil. 5. Let sit 4 hours to overnight to marinate before adding salt and pepper. 6. Hold in refrigerator for up to a week. Re-emulsify if needed.

For John Lewis and his father, John Lewis, Sr., barbecue is a family affair. The pair have been working for years to perfect the wood-fired barbecue pits that Lewis uses at his restaurants, including the forthcoming Lewis Barbecue in Charleston, slated for later this year. Their company, Austin Smoke Works, now sells the hand-built smoker to barbecue-obsessed home cooks. Here, Lewis shares seven secrets for pulling off a perfect summer barbecue at home.

1. Pick pork. Start barbecuing with pork butt, the most forgiving cut of meat, for slow cooking. The meat almost always turns out juicy and is a lower price per pound than other cuts, so it’s perfect for honing your barbecue skills and feeding a crowd inexpensively. 2. Invest in a good thermometer. Keeping a steady temperature is paramount for meats that take hours to cook, but unfortunately, the typical store-bought offset smoker is equipped with a cheap and unreliable temperature gauge. To ensure a controlled temperature, replace the gauge with a heavy-duty pit thermometer (I prefer Tel-Tru) and place it on the cooking grate level so you can read the temperature where the meat is actually located. (Remember: heat rises to the top of the cooker, so the gauge will read 25-50 degrees hotter than where the meat is.) 3. Be choosy about your meat. The quality of meat is key to a succulent finished product. Seek out highly marbled cuts instead of just picking brisket on top of the butcher’s case. Try to find USDA grade prime beef and heritage breeds of pork. 4. Hold off on the sauce. If applied too soon, sauces and glazes with a high sugar content will burn. Save them for the final 15-20 minutes of cooking, especially with direct heat cooking/grilling. 5. Keep the heat steady. With backyard smokers, it is very difficult to maintain a small enough live, all-wood fire to keep your pit at the low temperature required for slow cooking. Using charcoal and adding a few hardwood chunks every hour will ensure that the heat remains consistent. 6. Rest your meat. My rule of thumb for testing meat after it comes out of the smoker is to use your hand: If you can hold your hand on it for a couple seconds, then it’s ready to cut. If you start slicing your barbecue too soon after it comes off the grill, you will notice a lot of steam evaporating – that’s the juice in the meat floating into the air! 7. Go naked. Try serving barbecue sauce on the side (instead of on your meat) so your guests can taste the long hours you put into smoking.
