OUR VALUES Dear Members of The Clubs by JOE, Fall represents a changing of the season, football, tailgate parties and so much more. As I reflect on this final quarter of the year, I am also reminded of the growth and changes underway at our various properties — all changes to further raise the bar even higher for our outstanding amenities at The Clubs by JOE. In this issue of Experience magazine, you will read about the vast expansion plan that has begun at Camp Creek Golf Club. This represents a milestone for the Club because so many of the proposed improvements will further elevate the Club’s stature, certainly placing it at the top of the list in the Southeast. From the outset, we sought to identify and engage architects, engineers and designers with significant experience in golf course amenity design. For instance, The Gettys Group is a world-class hospitality design firm, and you will have an opportunity to read an extensive story that details our collective vision for how the new buildings at Camp Creek are being designed to not just reflect the rich heritage of this part of Florida, but also more importantly to organically connect with Members and guests as they visit and enjoy the planned restaurant, wellness center, kids pavilion, new tennis complex and the Inn. You will also read about a recent golf outing at a resort in North Georgia. Taking advantage of the new Pilatus aircraft that we plan to make available to Members through Westair Charter, I was able to accompany several Members for a delightful four days of golf. The convenience afforded by private plane travel is but one more amenity offered to you. However, the real plus from that trip was the camaraderie we shared both on and off the course. As I reflect on that trip, it is even more apparent that this camaraderie and sense of place is what being a Member of The Clubs by JOE is all about.
Breaking ground at Camp Creek and adding private plane travel have us all at The Clubs by JOE excited about the future of your Club. I look forward to exploring more new enhancements to membership in the coming years as we continually strive to bring the best experience to you, your families and your guests. All in all, 2019 has been a great year, and 2020 promises to surpass that! Once again, we want to thank you for your continued support. No doubt, without you, The Clubs by JOE wouldn’t be what it is today nor in the future. All the best,

FOR YEARS, THEY HAVE BEEN DREAMING. About brilliant and enthusiastic teenagers, learning lessons in the latest software, using state-of-the-art equipment. Of classroom teachers leading thoughtful, deep dives into not just science and math, but also the arts. The visionaries? One is a forward-thinking school district willing to research and work hard to create a school unlike anything Northwest Florida has ever seen. The other is a corporation that continually seeks ways to give generously of its resources to make meaningful community improvements. This bold vision is finally a reality with the launch of the Magnet Innovation Center at St. Joe Watersound. After years of discussion, planning and renovations, a new high school facility has opened on the site of The St. Joe Company headquarters at 133 S. Watersound Parkway. The STEAM school — an educator’s acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math — is a

dream come true for St. Joe CEO Jorge Gonzalez. It was during one of his regular conversations with Walton County Schools Superintendent Russell Hughes that he floated the idea of a STEM-focused school, an idea that quickly took root. “We are firm believers in the rising tide lifts all boats. When good things happen for the community, good things happen for our residents,” said Gonzalez, who often ponders ways to boost communities through infrastructure improvements in education and health care. “This just improves the overall educational dynamic in our community, which is good for everybody.” The idea for the school came first, and then one day Gonzalez realized he was sitting on the perfect location for it. The St. Joe headquarters were right-sized and well located for this kind of school, and St. Joe could move its headquarters anywhere. Gonzalez decided to lease the land and facilities to Walton Schools for $1 a year and relocate to new headquarters nearby in Bay County. In addition to the gift of the facilities, the St. Joe Community

Foundation is chipping in $226,118 for robotics and technology equipment. “When I saw the facility, it was just phenomenal. I got excited from the get-go,” said Hughes, whose school district is the fastest growing in Florida and the sixth fastest growing in the nation. “To have a school I wouldn’t have to build … it really was a godsend.” The district has spent $1.5 million to renovate and bring the campus into compliance for school safety codes — a welcome investment, Hughes said, adding “that actual site is well worth I don’t even know how many millions of dollars.” Their plans to open the school were delayed by several months after Hurricane Michael hit, but it has been worth the wait. One building was remodeled into a visual arts technology lab and one instructional classroom. A second, larger building was being remodeled to include both an engineering lab and a robotics lab. Next year, the school anticipates renovation of two more buildings with additional space for more engineering, AutoCAD and Advanced Placement computer science labs.
The school currently has 60 students in grades 9 through 12. They start their day briefly at South Walton High School, then board a bus for the 12-minute drive to MIC for morning STEAM instruction, returning to complete other coursework in the afternoon. Their lessons are focused on experiential learning with a focus on developing skills in communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. They’ll learn

technical skills, such as how to use hightech equipment and work their way toward certifications in programs such as Adobe, AutoCAD, Inventor and Revit. They’ll also learn the soft skills that current employers so often say are lacking in the workforce — such as leadership and problem solving. “We are teaching kids for a future that we don’t even know exists. There are careers that have not been created yet that kids are going to need to function within,” Hughes said. “It’s a responsibility of ours to create children that can think, create and invent, that are instantly ready to be marketable globally. If we can do that, then the sky’s the limit.” Carrie Sneed, the director of MIC, said that students from across Walton County are invited to attend the magnet program, but it is selective. letters of reference and write an essay about their interest in, experience with or desire to learn more about STEAM. The school plans to grow, with goals of doubling in size next year and rising to 250 students in four years. “Having a campus totally dedicated to educating our students in the area of STEAM is vital to not only the success of our students but the success of our local area,” she said. “The panhandle is a booming area of technology and advancements for the future. Having a campus here, in Walton County, where we can start building relationships with our students and community members, will promote bringing those students back to the area as adults to work in our local economy.” The school plans to have top-of-the-line tools to facilitate teaching. In addition to wet and dry labs complete with equipment and software, they are acquiring a Squink PCB circuit board printer and a CNC milling machine with air power drawbar. When complete, the Visual Technology Lab will be outfitted with iMac workstations and access to virtual reality goggles, digital drawing tablets, 3D printers, 3D scanners, laser engravers, large format printers and numerous software programs. They also plan to create internships and mentorships while hosting guest speakers from local tech companies, and personnel from nearby Tyndall and Eglin Air Force bases. “We’re creating something that we want people from around the world to fly in to see,” Hughes said. “Anything less than that is unacceptable.”

ONE OF THE great things about being a Member at The Clubs by JOE is that new friendships can be forged on one of our golf courses or other Club facilities. With that friendship often comes an opportunity to visit another club or resort. Recently, Mike Jansen, Managing Director of The Clubs by JOE, arranged a golf trip to Georgia’s Reynolds Plantation on Lake Oconee.

Usually a trip like that would involve a day’s drive there and back, which often limits the amount of time to actually play. Not anymore. Jansen took advantage of the new Pilatus PC-12 NG aircraft that The Clubs by JOE plans to place into service this year through Westair Charter. This turbinepowered single-engine aircraft has rapidly become recognized as the most efficient business aircraft available today. The large cabin, long range capability, high speed, short-field requirements and low operating costs make it a natural for our Members to charter. Last year, the plane was flown from Switzerland after its completion and was fitted with its interior components near Denver, Colorado. When touring the Pilatus, one is struck by the spaciousness of the cabin. In fact, it is larger
in volume than most turboprops and medium-sized business jets that often cost twice as much to operate. In addition to all the cabin space, the Pilatus was designed with the comfort of its passengers foremost. As an example, access to the baggage compartment may seem like an insignificant feature, but if you have ever been in a smaller charter plane and needed something from your valise that was neatly stowed away and not reachable, access to the luggage compartment is a huge selling feature for our new aircraft. And that is just the beginning. Pilatus partnered with BMW Designworks to craft a modern, elegant interior, exquisitely crafted to not only meet the requirements of our Members, but also the Swiss manufacturing heritage of Pilatus Aircraft Ltd.
The proposed amenity for The Clubs by JOE, the Pilatus PC-12 NG can travel over 1,800 nautical miles without stopping. With a maximum altitude of 30,000 feet, it also offers a much smoother ride.

Marketing Coordinator for The Clubs by JOE, flew from Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport in Panama City to Greene County Airport near Reynolds Plantation. With a flying time of just under one hour, the group landed, drove the 15 minutes to Reynolds Plantation, met Ray Harris, Alan Arnold, Jeff Darby and Kevin Jordan, who drove over from Birmingham, and in no time, they were on The National course playing the first of five rounds of golf that trip. “One of the most impressive things about the aircraft is that we had plenty of luggage, but there was still ample room for everyone’s clubs,” said Price. “This aircraft is quality through and through. Even the interior screams luxury,” said Wiggins.

After 36 holes on Friday, the group enjoyed a delectable meal, reviewed the ups and downs of their game that day, told a few stories and retired for the night. On Saturday, die-hard college football fans got in 18 holes before the first kickoff while the others enjoyed another 18 holes on The National course. Sunday ushered in another 18 holes; by then, every player was in their “zone.” “Golf trips are not just about the game, but also the camaraderie that develops as time passes,” Jansen related. Commentary ranges from the unusual swing of a player to course comparisons to family. “We are all serious golfers, but we do enjoy the time spent getting to know someone just a little bit better,” said Cooley.
After another day of golf, the group packed up and headed back to the airport. True to its Swiss engineering, the Pilatus PC-12 NG is very efficient. It requires a takeoff distance of only 2,602 feet, has a maximum cruise speed of 285 KTAS. The maximum distance it can fly without stopping is just over 1,800 nautical miles. That’s a long way to go to play golf. In addition, a maximum altitude of 30,000 feet gets the plane above much of the turbulent air for a smoother ride. No doubt, the plane will serve the needs of Members quite well. As Jansen related: “with private charter service, Members can avoid many of the inconveniences associated with commercial air travel. No lines to stand in. No need to take off your shoes and pledge your first-born. Simply
get out of the car, walk the red carpet to the steps and board the plane. And as you have so often heard a commercial pilot say: ‘sit back, relax and enjoy the flight.’” In just under 60 minutes, the group was back in Panama City with deeper relationships and new stories to tell. “The planned addition of the Pilatus to our Member amenity list is significant in our continued commitment to search for and add amenities that serve to make membership in The Clubs by JOE so valuable,” said Jansen. So, when you think about air travel in the future, whether to play golf, join a business meeting at a moment’s notice or take the family on holiday, think about your newest Member amenity, The Pilatus PC-12 NG. It’s waiting for you!

TIPS FROM THE PROS: DRIVERS BY SEAN MCGAUGHEY, DIRECTOR OF GOLF AT THE CLUBS BY JOE
26
WINTER/SPRING 2020
EXPERIENCE MAGAZINE
feature
Hitting solid drivers can be a tough task, but with the proper setup and technique, consistency can be achieved. Drivers can make your round excellent, or they can bring you to your knees. How do tour pros use them so consistently? Just like any club in the bag, the answer is in your technique.
1 SETUP One of the most overlooked steps to hitting consistently long, accurate drivers is the setup. When setting up to hit a driver, there are a couple of crucial changes that need to take place as you address the ball. These key changes are: → Widen your stance. → Ball is positioned slightly inside the lead foot. → Level out the body so that you are balanced between both feet. → Settle into position by bending the knees enough that you can feel pressure in your upper thighs. →P inch your shoulders together then slightly relax them so that you are in a strong, wide position.
2 BACKSWING It’s vital to take your time when taking the club away. Rushing to get to the top of your swing never leads to good shots. Always think slow and wide.
3 TRANSITION The transition is key to consistent shots. And this is where you see a lot of players have significant issues. Most of the time, players will rush to get back to the ball, not only killing their turn but also their power coil as well. The best advice is to not rush into the shot. →F eel your arms drop as your shoulders stay closed to the target. → This will help you slow down and allow you to whip your hips and shoulders through at the same time, creating plenty of power.
4 FOLLOW THROUGH At the end of a well-struck driver swing, there are a few positions that always materialize. Try to develop these positions at the end of your swing. → At the end of the golf swing, try to feel the vast majority of your weight on your left leg. There should be enough weight on your left leg that you can pick up right your foot without falling backward. →A fter your golf swing your upper body should be facing your target. → Balance is often overlooked, but it is very important that you finish in a stable position. Try to hold your finish unless you have physical limitations.

ELECTRIC BIKES are for EVERYONE Discover a new way to cruise around the coast STORY BY LAUREN SAGE REINLIE PHOTOS BY TROY RUPRECHT

Because the rider still pedals and is only assisted by the motor, studies have shown the health benefits of electric biking are just as good as regular bike riding, with a slight edge for people who are out of shape or haven’t biked lately. Archer also noted electric biking is a great way to get around Northwest Florida, especially the Scenic Highway 30A area, because you can spend an entire day without getting in a car. It’s better for the environment and better than sitting in traffic or searching for a parking place. But for Archer, electric biking is primarily about the experience along the way — being immersed in the beautiful natural setting. “You’re going to start seeing a lot of the natural inhabitants because they are really right off the path here. the way up to 20. Their fastest e-bike can even be programmed to go 27 mph. The bikes have gears, so riders choose how much pedal resistance they want. The gears have a torque sensor that detects how much force is put on the pedals and adjusts the power accordingly. It sounds complicated, but basically it means I wasn’t passively sitting on the bike as it cruised down the road. I was working and controlling the bike, the motor offering a little boost, allowing me to go a lot further. If I had hopped on a regular bike for a 10mile ride after not biking for so long, I definitely would have been wiped out and most likely would have been hobbling around sore for a few days. Instead, I felt like I had gone for a long, brisk walk, but I had traveled miles through Point Washington State Forest, seen a deer from 4 feet away, cruised over several coastal
dune lakes and rode down the boardwalk at Grayton Beach, pausing to take in the beautiful crystal-clear water of the Gulf of Mexico — all in under an hour. On a straightaway, I eased my speed up to about 17 miles per hour, the wind blowing my hair, a big grin stretched across my face. It’s a speed I had only reached on a bike while coasting down a big hill. “These tools let you go further faster and have more fun doing it,” Archer said. Archer and his design team worked hard to create reliable electric bikes that won’t break the bank. He said they sought out the most dependable parts and incorporated them into a sleek design but tried not to add a lot of extra features their customers wouldn’t need. YOLO Board has two styles of electric bikes. The 30A Electric Beach Cruiser is made for bike paths and other paved
surfaces. Their Bolt Electric Fat Tire, which boasts 4-inch tires, can literally ride anywhere: gravel, forest trails, even down the sandy beach. “Riding a regular bike on the beach, it’s ridiculous, impossible really,” Archer said. “But with the fat-tire electric bikes, the weight is dispersed a little more, and you’ve got the power of the battery. You just cruise down the sand. There’s nothing like it.” Archer said he takes long electric bike rides several times a week, exploring the back roads, the alleyways and the trails that he usually wouldn’t go down but are easily accessible with an e-bike. It reminds him of growing up when he and his friends used to ride far from their home in rural Louisiana to a McDonald’s or just to explore. “It brings you back to that child that exists in all of us, and for me, now that I have woken that child up, he won’t go back to sleep,” Archer said. “He is in full control. It’s like I’m an over-financed 14-yearold that just happens to have a receding hairline and a little bit of grey hair.” Electric bike demos are available at YOLO Board and Bike stores. Find more information at YOLOboard.com.
E-bikes work in concert with the rider, and many electric bikes have various levels of assistance, from about 6 mph to over 20 mph. The bikes have gears, so riders choose how much pedal resistance they want, and those gears have a sensor that adjusts power based on how much force is put on the pedals.

IN A PREVIOUS ISSUE OF Experience, the vision for the planned club amenities and 75-room inn adjacent to Camp Creek Golf Club was unveiled. The plans include a new health and wellness center, kids club, casual restaurant, multi-sport court including new tennis and pickle ball courts, leisure pool, playground and an upscale 75key boutique inn. As many of our readers know, dirt is being moved, surveyors are scurrying about and a construction trailer is in full view. That means we are underway, adding new amenities designed to position The Clubs by JOE as one of the top private clubs in the Southeast. The St. Joe Company engaged regional contractor The Highland Group to manage construction and tasked noted Chicago interior design firm The Gettys Group to work with Atlanta-based architectural firm KUO DIEDRICH CHI on the design of all the new buildings. Over the next year or so, the goal of this enormous undertaking is to totally transform the area around Camp Creek Golf Club. According to Scott Schamburger of Highland, over

According to Sarah Harvey of Gettys, the lead interior designer on the project, everything you will see in each of the new buildings will have been carefully researched, sourced and installed with elegance, comfort and convenience in mind. “As designers, we strive to create spaces that will connect with those who interact with them. You know when that happens because you have this feeling of comfort and familiarity. We begin with essentially a clean palette, and our design philosophy of layering in color, texture, contextual references and, of course, simplicity drives the project. In the design, we have allowed nature to be the primary influence. From the green plants to the blue skies, white sandy beaches, and even

tree bark, we are allowing those colors to become primary in our design,” she said. Designers often look for subtle pieces of art or regional artifacts to weave a story about the project. Such is the case with the 75-room inn that is planned for the site. “The meeting spaces plan to feature old railroad maps that delineate the routes of the Apalachicola Northern Railroad. For those not familiar with the early St. Joe Company history, the Apalachicola Northern Railroad was a short-line railroad that operated in the Florida Panhandle. St. Joe owned and operated a 96-mile (154 km) route between Port Saint Joe, Florida and Chattahoochee, Florida, with a short spur to Apalachicola, Florida. The railroad was founded in 1903 and ceased operating in 2002 when The St. Joe Company leased its line to the AN Railway. Visitors will find these curated maps interesting as they demonstrate the developing Florida Panhandle in the early 20th century. If Members and guests seek a relaxed spot for a meal, the planned casual restaurant will fit the bill. Plans call for the restaurant to serve lunch and dinner and to have ample seating inside and out. Harvey says that the restaurant is designed to feel like it’s always been there. Corrugated metal, rustic hardwood floors, whitewashed lap siding and black metal lighting pendants are planned for the space and provide a natural raw feeling. One can almost smell the smoke from the cooker and taste the savory meats soon to be served. Textured wallpaper, soft lighting and casual seating in the lobby sets the tone for relaxation on the first floor of the Wellness Center. Plans call for separate spaces for men and women, a steam room, sauna and a small outdoor pool for spa guests. For the fitness folks, the upstairs portion of the Wellness Center is intended to house a gym along with two rooms for yoga, exercise or maybe even a health class from time to time. Designed to be social, airy, approachable, nostalgic, refined, fresh and layered, the planned 75-room Inn will serve to define for its guests all that Camp Creek is meant to be. Using subtle hues of white, cream, beige, sage and grey, visitors, guests and even employees will enjoy the calmness and serenity of the soothing colors. “These colors will set a tone throughout the Inn. After all, people come to a resort to relax,” says Harvey. The plans include a 98-seat restaurant in the Inn with seating both indoors and outside, serving three meals per day. It is destined to be an

active space for creating memories for a lifetime. After dinner, step into the lounge for a nightcap. The day will be complete. Expect that guests arriving at the Inn won’t see an encroaching “check-in” counter, but rather a desk perfectly arranged in front of library shelving making it seem more like you have come home and are walking into your personal space. And after checking in, every guest will most certainly take a few minutes to sit on the front porch and enjoy rocking while listening to the wind rustle through the tall pines. Throughout the Inn, guests will be treated to period antiques, photographs depicting golf, family outings and, of course, the beach. Guest rooms in the Inn are being designed to exude elegance and freshness. Minimal patterns

have been planned so as to not over stimulate the senses, and large fluffy pillows will beckon the guest to lounge awhile. Picking up the Creole influence, a fleur-de-lis pattern on the bathroom floor will add that extra design touch. While the Inn, restaurant and Wellness Center are the most prominent amenities currently under construction, a tennis center with lounge seating, amphitheater-style seating courtside and a pro shop with just about anything one needs to up their game or their style are also in the plans. No addition would be complete without something for the kids, and that is why plans include a small building that will house ping pong tables, air hockey, and other games. Casual seating around the building will
look more like a coffee shop with Wi-Fi available so no Instagram or Snapchat account goes unattended for long. While the bulk of renovations have focused on the creation of new spaces and places for Members, it should also be noted that a significant portion of the golf course is being re-grassed. The course was recently closed as tilling began in August. Landscapes Unlimited has been engaged to undertake not only the grassing, but also cart path repairs and bunker renovations. The nearly $2 million golf course renovation project is slated for completion in the fall of 2020. “Our commitment to our Members is that we will always strive to provide the highest quality amenities. WEDDING The Little Mermaid Isn’t the Only One to Find True Love With a Handsome Prince Named Eric STORY BY ZANDRA WOLFGRAM // PHOTOS BY BROOKE HANNA
Every bride dreams of feeling like a princess on her special day. For Kimberly “Kimmie” Sneed, 28, who tied the knot with her very own prince Eric, also 28, on May 11, 2019, every single detail of wedding day was “a dream better than a Disney movie.” We spoke with the fair-eyed flame-haired beauty about the Georgia couple’s big day, and this is how her fairytale story of happily ever after begins …

Zandra Wolfgram How did you meet your Prince Charming? Kimmie Sneed We met in the summer of
2017. I am an ER nurse. Eric was a police officer for the city of Kennesaw, Georgia. He brought in a patient one night, and I was assigned to be the nurse for that patient. We were focused on work, but he says he noticed me right away and how I treated my patient with compassion. I liked his uniform. We went on a blind date. Sparks flew right away, and we had an instant connection. He says he knew early on we would be married.

ZW You got engaged in November 2018. How did Eric pop the question? KS We had recently bought a house
together in Power Springs, a suburb of Atlanta. He proposed on the steps of the house, which was so special. Everyone knew about the proposal except me. I thought I was going over to meet a plumber and that he was at work. He was so nervous he got down on one knee just blurted out, ‘Kimberly Bardwell, will you marry me?’ The ring was my mother’s. I said ‘yes!’ right away, and we both were just laughing. We sat in
rockers on the front porch and Eric said, ‘Let’s grow old on these rocking chairs together.’ Afterward, we went to my grandmother’s house to celebrate. ZW Describe your wedding for us. KS We’re very old school, so it was
traditional, simple and classic. My colors were white with some greenery. We had a lot of candles and lights. We didn’t do a “first look,” and we didn’t have bridesmaids and groomsmen. It was about us and our marriage. I always wanted to get married in the Chapel
at Seaside because it is traditional and simple, so it was the perfect place. ZW Tell us about your special connection to the 30A area. KS We have gone to Seagrove Beach for
20 years. Our family has a beach house there. My dad is a doctor, so we called our place “Off Call.” We always used to go to the Red Bar and to Café Thirty-A for martini night at 5 p.m. on the dot. and, of course, we spent a lot of time at the beach. Now, Eric loves it too and says it’s just like another home. ZW Why did you choose WaterSound Beach Club for your reception? KS Growing up on the beaches there,
it was special to have our reception at WaterSound Beach Club. My parents attended a wedding there and enjoyed it. I was so excited they could accommodate our wedding party. Madison Smiedendorf was our wedding manager. We met Madison at the Club over a long weekend. She was awesome. When I walked out, I just loved the dunes, the beautiful pool, and that it was so close to the beach. Madison was great. She set all my troubles at ease. She was easy to
communicate with. That day, anything I needed — a glass of wine, appetizers — she took care of me. It was perfect. ZW Why was May 11, 2019 the day of your dreams? KS It far exceeded everything I ever
dreamed of without being too cheesy. Shelby Peaden Events was our wedding planner, and their team made sure I was where I needed to be. My mom was my matron of honor, so I got to get ready with her. My childhood BFF, Anna, came in from Birmingham. I didn’t want a lot of commotion, and was able to spend quality time with each of them. Carmela from Roland Beauty Bar did my makeup, and Ginger did my hair with a twisted side braid and made me feel like a mermaid princess. My aunt and grandma came over to see me before I walked down the aisle. We did a “first look” with my brother and dad, while doing my bridal portrait, so that was special. My little brother Ryan cried. My other brother, Trey, is married to Rachel, and they have a little girl and boy (Avery, 4; and Luke, 2). They were my flower girl and ring bearer. My cousin’s kids also were ring bearers to help pull Luke down the aisle.
ZW How was it having your mother as your matron of honor? KS My mom is a cancer survivor, so it
was super special to plan my wedding with her, because we didn’t know we’d get to do that. She helped do everything. She was excited about every decision, every fitting, every flower meeting. She helped make every detail come together. We had fun doing it, too. ZW What about a special memory with your father? KS Our wedding band was First
Generation out of Atlanta. My first dance with my dad turned into a dance with all the men in my family. It was to “My Girl,” because I am the only girl in the family. It finished with my grandfather, so that was sweet. ZW Your bouquet was gorgeous for an extra special reason. Tell us about it. KS Our flowers were designed by
Clay Keels with Signature Wedding & Events. I carried a simple bouquet of white roses, blue eucalyptus and greenery sprigs. It incorporated a mother of pearl heirloom that was worn by my grandma. It’s not the most

glamorous thing you’ve ever seen, but every woman in my family has worn it in some way. My aunt also gave me a handkerchief that used to be my grandmother’s. I wrapped it around the stems of my flowers and tied it with a blue ribbon. ZW How was your wedding supper? KS We got to come to Florida to do
a taste testing at WaterSound Beach Club, so we made it into a day date. It was really fun. A sax player played during the cocktail hour. Eric played in high school and really wanted that. We had goat cheese crostini and crab cakes appetizers. The entrées were fresh Gulf grouper and filet of beef with gourmet Gouda lobster mac & cheese and roasted Brussels sprouts. Everything was delicious. Confections on the Coast made our

cake. It had five tiers; each layer was a different flavor. It was best cake I’ve ever had in my life. ZW Tell us about a special wedding day moment you will cherish forever. KS During our engagement, we wrote
letters to each other. My letters were funny to make him laugh; his were super serious extravagant love letters … every girl’s dream. When I was 16, I wrote a letter to My Future Husband. I read that in front of all our family. It’s only about three sentences, but Eric kind of cried when he heard it.
ZW Did you exchange gift with one another? KS I gave Eric a watch engraved
with ‘Love you to the moon & back.’

My husband loves sweets, so I surprised him with a chocolate Atlanta Braves groom’s cake. He got me a Pandora charm bracelet with an ‘S’ for my new last name and a seashell for our destination beach wedding and he said we’ll add one every year we are married. ZW How did you celebrate your honeymoon? KS We stayed in a cute condo
at the beach for four days. We didn’t live together before we were married, so we were excited to return home to start our life in our new home. Eric carried me over the threshold. There was a big ‘congratulations’ sign greeting us, and we had a big family dinner celebration when we got home.

WINTER/SPRING 2020
EXPERIENCE MAGAZINE
What led you to your current job? I’m originally from Bruce,
Mississippi, which is a small town about 30 miles south of Oxford, where Ole Miss is located. Bruce is such a small town; if you blink, you’ll miss it. I received my degree in Agronomy from Mississippi State University and later became the assistant superintendent of Mississippi State’s golf course. I was put in touch with Larry Livingston, the former superintendent of Camp Creek Golf Club, so that’s how
I got to the area. I was assistant superintendent at Camp Creek Golf Club for five and a half years, then the superintendent position at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club became available. I was able to move over into this role. Describe a typical workday. Well
first and foremost when I come in, I get some coffee. That’s the most important start to the day. Then I’ll start by making notes about what we’re doing for the day in my daily log to reference back. I’ll mow greens
or run a blower if the guys need some help. After that, I’ll come back to the office and take care of invoices. It’s usually around lunchtime by then, so I’ll make a loop around the course to check on everything. That also helps me plan out the next day and the remainder of the week. Every week is a little different. After that, if there’s anything else I need do to help our guys finish out the day, I will do that. There are a few consistent things that need to be done each week, especially with greens maintenance. When we’re closed on Tuesdays, that’s when we usually do verticutting and topdressing. Those things are pretty constant, along with mowing. Other than that, the weather brings some curveballs, so you never know. It could rain three inches one evening, then we have to fix bunkers the next day. What exactly we do each day does shift around a bit. However, there is some consistency week to week. What is your favorite part about what you do? I think
my favorite part is the results and hearing Members and guests come in and talk about how good the course is. That’s why you do it. There’s always ups and downs. But when you hear someone complimenting your work, it definitely makes it all worth it. Our team takes a lot of pride in what we do. What are you passionate about?
As far as work goes, just giving the best product I possibly can to Members and guests on a daily basis. The golfers that play early don’t mind us being out while they’re playing because they understand that the things we’re doing need to be done. But it does bother me. They’re at Shark’s Tooth because they expect the best, and we should always do what we can to give them the best experience. That drives me to keep improving.
When you’re not working, what is your favorite thing to do?
When I’m not here, I enjoy just hanging out with my family. My wife Hollie and I have two boys — one is 18 years old and one is 11. Whatever they’re into that time of year, whether it’s baseball or soccer, we go to their events and make sure they get to where they need to go. The 18-year-old just started college at Florida Atlantic University and is playing baseball there, so it’s satisfying to know that the hard work paid off. Our youngest is still figuring out what his “thing” is. He’s playing baseball and soccer right now. What three words would best describe you? I would say I’m
understanding. I try to put myself in other people’s situations, whether that’s an employee or a member, and see things from their perspective. Passionate would be second. I really strive to give a good, consistent product. Third would be familyoriented. I love spending time with my family and getting involved in the things that they enjoy.
What accomplishment are you most proud of? I feel really
fortunate to be in the position that I’m in. And I’m proud of the fact that I’ve been able to be in this position for a few years already. Achieving Class A superintendent status a few years ago was a big step in my career. To become a Class A superintendent, you have to be a superintendent for a certain number of years, have a certain number of community service hours and a certain amount of continuing education hours.
What’s the biggest change you’ve seen during your time here? The amount of play that we
get each day has definitely changed. I’ve been here for eight years now, and it used to be pretty slow as far as play on the course. As our membership has increased, more people are coming out to enjoy the course, especially in the last couple of years. It’s exciting to see all the growth happening. Whether we have five golfers or 50 golfers on the tee sheet, they should get the same conditions and experience on the course.

ON JAN. 7, 2010, the Alabama Crimson Tide might have claimed football’s national championship with a 37-21 win over the Texas Longhorns, but Kavanaugh Tucker, a finance businessman from Atlanta, claimed the heart of Celia Roberts from Anniston, Alabama … well, eventually. “I chased her for nine months and she finally gave in,” Kav says flashing a beguiling smile. “When you know, you know. I was told that, but I didn’t believe it until I experienced it.” At the time, Celia was still on the sidelines. “I was very intrigued by him, but it took a little coercing,” confessed Celia, who on this day looked effortlessly chic in a black ruffled blouse, denim jeans and a stunning pair of chandelier statement earrings — the only tell she is a partner in the boutique fashion brand Willow. “She was cautiously optimistic,” says Kav. Cozied up on a plush linen covered sofa in their living room on a fall evening, they both laugh. Something these 43-yearolds do a lot. Nine months later they went on their first dinner date in Waverly, Alabama, where Celia was flanked by her best girlfriends. “I figured they could look him over and tell me ‘yay’ or ‘nay,’ ” she says. Well, the “ayes” definitely had it. After a year of long-distance dating between Atlanta and the Emerald Coast, the handsome couple married at Alys Beach in October 2011 and had a son, Huxley, now 7. Soon, they began serious conversations regarding where they would settle down. Kav, who was recruited to Georgia Tech to golf, was campaigning hard to stay in Atlanta, where his businesses were based. He had reservations about raising a family in a beach-side tourist town. “I wondered about opportunities, the access to resources and the quality of life,” he says. “He’s a big-city guy,” Celia chimes putting her hand on his shoulder. Celia liked the idea of living at the beach. She grew up frequently piling in the car with cousins to make the 5-hour trip down I-65 from Anniston to

Atlanta is busy, it’s congested, it’s complex, even navigating schools is difficult. But in this day and age with all the technology we have, you don’t have to be in a big city to have a successful business,” Kav says. The Tuckers bought their first house in Seagrove, where Celia had many fond childhood memories. They loved being a “golf cart away from Seaside,” and for a while, living in a vacation town seemed was a lot of fun. But there weren’t many little children, and without young families, “it lacked the sense of community” they were looking for. A difficult house purchasing experience helped them realize something else. “I thought with my resources, knowledge and relationships in capital markets, we could do better,” Kav says. In 2014, he
founded Walton Funding, a mortgage lending company. When Hux was 3, the Tuckers decided to look for a place that better fit their family. They considered different options and looked at building their own home, but that seemed complicated and time consuming. They bought a lot and even drew up designs for a custom home. But with Kav starting his business and Celia expanding her Willow Boutique business — there are currently four locations throughout 30A — they had their hands full. “When they came to us and were asking where to place all of the outlets, it was just too overwhelming,” Celia says. They decided to pause the project, and then some friends told them about the Watersound Origins community. “We had a couple friends who lived here for a long time and just raved about it,” Celia says. So, the Tuckers decided to take a closer look and set up a tour of a model home.
“I was secretly campaigning for a golf lot,” Kav says with a grin. “She walked into the model home, and she loved it.” The home in the Winter Garden neighborhood is a Florida coastal cottage situated on the golf course under a stand of tall pines. The model was the Weatherly floor plan built by Romair Homes. Celia loved the traditional Cape Cod-style wrapped with pretty wood porches and shaded decks. Inside are four bedrooms — a spacious master downstairs and three bedrooms upstairs — one for Hux, a playroom, a guest room and a bunk room. The 3,134-square-foot open concept has sweeping 10-foot ceilings and large windows and glass doors that allow natural light to flood in. “It was the right decision,” Kav says. “It was perfect, because it was everything we wanted but allowed Celia to make it hers.” Outside, they enhanced the outdoor living area by adding a gazebo and infinity swimming pool. Inside, they installed wide
“She knew it all along, but after some serious consideration, I finally realized things don’t have to be this difficult. Atlanta is busy, it’s congested, it’s complex, even navigating schools is difficult. But in this day and age with all the technology we have, you don’t have to be in a big city to have a successful business.” — Kavanaugh Tucker

wood-plank flooring, high-end appliances, quartz countertops in the kitchen, Carrara marble in the bathrooms. They added sparkle with chandelier and pendant lighting and fine finishes in brushed brass. Celia topped it off with her big splurge, a cedar shake roof. “We love that this neighborhood is kid friendly and love that the golf course is our backyard,” says Kav. “Like many families here, this is how we grew up as kids, running around and playing outside with friends in a neighborhood. A big benefit is the sense of community we have here.” The Watersound Origins community is a scenic 1,400-acre community in South Walton, 2 miles north of 30A. Situated between the Origins Golf Club and Lake Powell, there are plenty of things to do — from golfing, tennis and watersports to swimming and trail hiking — and as Members of The Clubs by JOE, the Tuckers take full advantage of the many amenities offered. “For me, it’s wonderful to relax with a round of golf at Shark’s Tooth and Camp Creek Golf Club — just so convenient,” Kav says. Celia nodded adding, “Beyond all there is to do right here in our neighborhood, we also love that we can catch up with friends over dinner and drinks at WaterSound Beach Club. They are always hosting fun events, and the view never gets old.” “You always see someone you know,” Kav says with a smile. The Tuckers like to be healthy by eating right and staying active. Celia loves yoga, which they practice as a family on Sundays; as an avid golfer and runner, Kav likes to hit the greens and the trails. And more amenities are coming — the Tuckers are especially excited about the new amenities planned for Camp Creek. “The experience here is how we all grew up. We remember our parents dropping us at the country club for the day to play golf or tennis, and they are creating that environment we had as children,” Kav says. Beyond Origins, the Tuckers have plenty of entertainment options near to the 30A area. They are regular patrons of Amici Italian Kitchen in 30Avenue, Borago in Grayton Beach and Raw & Juicy in Alys Beach. In their free time, they enjoy meeting up with friends to take in live theater at Seaside REP, movies at the Mountain Film Festival in WaterColor and discover new wines at Seeing Red Festival in Seaside. “We love it here,” Kav says before dipping a red pepper slice into hummus and popping it into his mouth. Celia nods in agreement tucking her bare feet under her on the sofa. “Yes, it really is perfect for where we are in our lives right now.”
