GOLF A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF Sean McGaughey, PGA Director of Golf What a wonderful November we had with cool temps and sunny days! Equally exciting was the reopening of Camp Creek Golf Club. The grass is really starting to take shape, and if you haven’t had the chance to play, please make an effort to come visit with us. We had a few great events last month starting with our Ladies MemberGuest. We had record-breaking participation with 24 total ladies, 12 groups, that played a One Net Best Ball of the Two format. Congratulations to Sydney Dunning and Kim Smaha for winning with an amazing score of 75. Equally impressive was the team of Elicia Rowell and Gwen Hendrick with a net score of 56. Great playing ladies! In its inaugural year, The Clubs by JOE membership took on Burnt Pine in our Battle at the Beach tournament. The teams played over two days in a Ryder Cup style format. Both clubs showed very well, but emerging victorious was the home team! A big thank you to Brian Starkman, Jay Gilbertson, Mack Corbin, Jim Henderson, Jack Lewis, Gary Turner, Mark McGuffee, James Muntz, Allen Franklin, and Jeff Roland for participating in this year’s event. Way to play gentlemen and congratulations. We also hosted our annual Turkey Shoot at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club last month. This event continues to grow and we had a group of 44 total players. Coming in 1st place in our Gross Division was the team of David Stuhlfire and Michael Ross with a great score of 69. The Net Division was won by the team of Barry Greer and Gary McCaghren with a score of 62. There were also 6 team skins which were each worth $30. Congrats to this years winners! We have had great traction for our Junior Program, so if you are looking to have your youngster get into the game of golf, we would love to coach them. These Junior Clinics are hosted on Wednesday afternoons starting at 4:00 PM at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club and Saturday afternoons at 12:30 PM at Origins Golf Club. This program is a great way to introduce your children to golf, learning fundamentals of the game and creating friendships. Please call Shark’s Tooth at 850.249.3041 for more information. Don’t forget to save the date for our upcoming Frosty Frolic Christmas Party at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club on Friday, December 13th. Ugly sweaters are encouraged, so please make sure to dress the part! The golf shop will host its annual Stocking Sale this evening as well, so if you’re looking for Christmas gifts please make sure to come see us. We look forward to seeing you out at the Clubs and have a wonderful day.

GOLF A MESSAGE FROM YOUR SUPERINTENDENTS Josh Parker Superintendent, Shark’s Tooth Golf Club
The cooler weather has officially arrived! We continue clearing out and cleaning between holes 17 and 18; cutting dead trees and limbing up the canopies. We will continue this process in other areas of the course as well. The ryegrass on the back practice tee has come in nicely. You can see by comparing it to the main practice tee how important it is to keep the seed moist. We irrigated the back tee several times a day for the past few weeks and it has filled in much better than the main tee. This is why we close the back tee when we seed every year. We strongly encourage everyone to use the 90 degree rule and keep carts on the paths around tees and greens going forward. The turf will not recover and we will be left with bare ground for months in traffic areas. Thank you for your cooperation.
Ryan Dykes Superintendent, Camp Creek Golf Club
As the project at Camp Creek continues, we will continue to try and provide the best experience we can given our current circumstances. The overseed has come in well and will continue to get better in the coming weeks. There are some spots where the seed did not take for various reasons. Some of it is due to the chemicals sprayed for the other grasses and some is a result of the washing out of seed that did not have an existing turf canopy to stop it. We will continue to try and improve these areas. We have lowered the mowing height on the fairways and approaches this week to try and give you more of a roll on your tee shots. We are continuing on with our goal of thinning out some of the native areas that have been hiding balls for years so that we can open up the course views. We will continue to focus on native beds and areas throughout the winter season to make the course more playable and aesthetically pleasing. The tools and equipment recently purchased are allowing us the ability to do much more work in these areas than we were capable of in the past.
The greens will be a little susceptible to the temperatures this time of year. When we get down to the 30s we can expect them to go a little off color. But most times when they go a off color, they gain speed. We will always strive to give you a pleasant putting experience whether they are green or brown. Thank you for your patience during our project’s progression.

Pick Out A Tree Choosing and decorating a tree for the holidays is one of the most beloved of December traditions. Make a day of it - bundle up and take a trip to a tree farm to find just the right one (and get your fill of hot chocolate along the way). Throw a Holiday Party Invite all of your friends, whip up the tastiest holiday recipes you can find, and enjoy the company of friends and family. Host a potluck and ask friends to bring dishes that represent their family’s traditions and cultural heritage. Wear Matching Pajamas For the whole family, of course. I hope everyone is gearing up for the holiday season! If you are looking for the perfect gift for that special tennis player on your list, we have all the latest racquet and string technology available from Wilson. You can contact me at 205.903.8743 to tryout a demo specifically designed for your game. Ladies league play is nearing the midpoint for this season. We have one home match this month scheduled on December 3rd. Please note that all courts at Shark’s Tooth will be in use from 8:45 AM – 1:30 PM on this date. Private, semi-private and group lessons are available for all ages and ability levels. If you are new to the game or if you have been on the sidelines and ready to get back on the courts, please contact me to get involved. Wishing each of you and your families the best during the holidays! I look forward to seeing you on the courts soon.
Pro Tip-Read, React, Recover Tennis is a fast paced sport involving quick reflexes and movement. Often times on the court it may seem as if everything is happening to fast. I would suggest applying these three steps as a remedy. 1) Read what type of shot you are receiving in order to allow early racquet preparation. 2) React with your footwork to get into proper position to execute your shot. 3) Recover back to ready and be mindful of the area of the court you are in. Ideally you would like to be behind the baseline or inside the service line. The next time you are playing try reading the shot, reacting with your feet and recovering into proper court position for instant improvement!
