From the Head of School

Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the Immaculate Virgin and Foster-Father of Jesus Christ; obtain for me and all the members of my family, a pure, humble, and charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the Divine Will. Be my guide and model throughout life that I may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary. Help us, Saint Joseph, in our earthly strife, to fulfill our responsibilities and ever to lead a pure and sinless life. Amen.

“Christ was faithful as a son over His house. We are Christ’s house if we hold firmly to our confidence and the boast of our hope.” Hebrews 3:6

Greetings from Saint Joseph’s Catholic School!

A hallmark of a Saint Joseph’s Catholic School education is the spirit of collaboration between the school and its parents. To help facilitate more interaction between parents and school leadership, we started the TEAM initiative a couple of years ago to bring the two groups together regularly to increase trust and strengthen mission alignment. For those unfamiliar with this acronym, TEAM stands for Total Engagement Around the Mission.

This year, you are invited to a monthly presentation and discussion on a topic of interest for parents. The topics we will cover at the TEAM meetings this year include:

• Belonging at St. Joseph’s

• Calming the Anxious Generation

• Understanding the Hope & Fears of Parents & Teachers

• Choosing the Right Academic Course Load for Your Child

• Sports The St. Joseph’s Way

• Effective Tips for Helping Your Teens Open Up through Active Listening

• The Essential Element of a 21st Century Catholic School

The presentations and discussions each month will be led by me with staff members who have particular expertise, experience, and responsibility for the meeting topic.

To accommodate parent schedules, each TEAM meeting topic will be presented twice, once on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 PM and then the following Thursday morning at 8:00 AM during Flex Time. Each session will last one hour. I hope you will mark your calendars and plan to join us each month.

We are excited to announce that the monthly Well-Fed Dad Prayer Breakfasts will resume this school year. Last year, Pope Francis dedicated nearly half of his Wednesday general audiences to teaching about the virtues and vices. In keeping with the theme for this year that "we are Christ's House if we hold firmly to our confidence and the boast of our hope," a different Saint Joseph's father will speak at each breakfast about a particular virtue that's important to their family and/or a vice that they've striven to overcome through Christ's grace. The first prayer breakfast is scheduled for Wednesday, September 11 at 6:45 AM in the Meeting Room. The first speaker is Ted Stewart, and he will be speaking about the virtue of faith. Someone will be at the front office door to let you into the building beginning at 6:35 AM. Please kindly RSVP so we know how many breakfast sandwiches to purchase.

Attention Eighth Grade Parents/Eighth Grade Day, January 22, 2025

SJCS eighth grade parents will receive an important letter in September from Keith Kiser, Head of School, about transitioning your child from eighth to ninth grade. This letter will cover many important topics for eighth grade families. If your child plans to re-enroll here for ninth grade, it is not necessary that he/she “apply” for high school, as your child is already a student in our school. However, it is required that all SJCS eighth graders complete our high school admissions test. This test provides us valuable data on our current eighth grade class, allows your son/daughter a chance to compete for one of two academic (half-off tuition) scholarships awarded each year to incoming ninth graders, and will assist us in placing your child in the correct high school classes. The test will be given to all SJCS eighth graders during the school day on Eighth Grade Day, which falls on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

From the Assistant Head of School

"Self-awareness is one of the vital tasks for emotional and spiritual intelligence. Know who you are, like who you are, become who you are. Prayer is part of this 'becoming aware' journey."

~St.

A 2019 article in Harvard Business Online (HERE ) titled, “Why Emotional Intelligence is Important in the Workplace,” touts emotional intelligence as “one of the most sought after interpersonal skills in the workplace. In fact, 71% of employers value emotional intelligence more than technical skills when evaluating candidates.” Once thought to be a function of time and age, emotional intelligence - the ability to recognize, understand, and deal skillfully with one's own emotions and the emotions of others (Merriam-Webster) - is now recognized as an ability that can, and should, be developed and nurtured, even at a very young age.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an education buzz-word. In years past, parents and educators might refer to a child’s need to develop in this area as a maturity issue … ”She just needs some time to grow up and mature,” or “Physically he appears older than his peers, but he is behind in his maturity level.” While the importance of developing emotional intelligence might be a relatively new concept for some educational institutions, it has been an essential part of who we are and how we approach education for a long time. This intangible quality is a tangible benefit for how we form and guide our students at Saint Joseph’s.

The start of a new school year is laden with pressures and stressors that tend to be focused on academic outcomes. As parents, we encourage our children to “start the year strong” or we tell them “don’t dig yourself a hole you can’t get out of.” All of this is meant for encouragement and preemptive action. And that is good. However, there is also a tremendous opportunity to help them develop the emotional intelligence they need to navigate the challenges that lie ahead - whether those be responding to a demanding course, handling a friendship strain, or working through an athletic performance gone wrong.

Our teachers are at Saint Joseph’s because they believe this work is just as worthy of time and effort as learning how to write a research paper, explore the mechanics of a medieval catapult, or balance a chemical equation. We will encourage your children to identify the true source of their struggle, to seek healthy ways to resolve that struggle, to ask for help from their teachers, counselors and coaches, and then to put into practice the advice they have been given. Yes, it is hard for them to do all these things. But we can encourage, remind, and model all of it for them. This is one way for you to partner with us.

As St. Augustine says, “Know who you are, like who you are, become who you are.” What a beautiful way to approach a new school year.

With Prayer and Thanksgiving, Wanda Jaraczewski Assistant Head of School

College Counseling Seminar Series During Flex Time

The College Counseling Office will have various sessions planned for Seniors and Juniors during Flex Time throughout the first semester. Students and parents will be given information about these events in advance. We encourage students to attend as many of these events as possible. More information to be coming soon.

College Counseling is on Instagram

Please be sure to search and follow @sjcs_collegecounseling for scholarship updates, application process tips and tricks, college visit announcements, and much, much more. This is a great way to stay connected with our office so we encourage everyone to follow along

College Rep Visits

Numerous colleges have already scheduled campus visits and we are currently working to schedule many others. These visits will be communicated via Scoir and on the College Counseling page of the SJCS website under “College Visit Information ” Students must register for visits through their Scoir account, at least one day in advance. We attempt to schedule most of these visits during the high school lunch period so that juniors and seniors can participate without missing class time. However, sometimes visits will need to take place at another time during the school day; and in these cases those students who have a particular interest in the college will need to ask permission from his or her teacher to be excused from class. This will take place at the discretion of individual instructors. Please encourage your child to attend as many of these informal meetings as possible These sessions provide great opportunities for students to talk with the college reps in a relaxed setting along with their classmates.

College Visits

Juniors and seniors are permitted to visit colleges or attend early decision days. In order for a college visit to count as a field trip, you must provide advance notice of the trip to the front office and documentation (standard college visit letters) from the college or university must be provided immediately after the visit. Second-semester sophomores and all juniors are allowed two college visits. Seniors are allowed up to four college visits over the course of the academic year.

Attention Freshmen & New HS Student Parents

One of the most revered traditions at SJCS is the Red Door Ceremony, where incoming Freshmen and new HS students ‘enter’ high school through the Red Door that belonged to the original location of Saint Joseph’s Catholic School, and is now currently located between the HS Commons and the JPII Center. Upon finishing their senior year, our graduates ‘exit’ high school by processing out the door. To commemorate this wonderful tradition, the Jubilate Arts Guild is selling a beautiful hand-designed stained glass ornament. Click HERE to purchase your ornament.

Opportunities to Support the Fine Arts

• Join: Show your love for the Arts by joining our Fine Arts Booster Club, the Jubilate Arts Guild (JAG). With membership support in past years, we were able to purchase much-needed items to benefit the department. For example, a tenor saxophone and bass drum for Band, drying racks and artwork displays for Visual Arts, sheet music for Strings & Chorus, a washer and dryer for Theatre, and a speaker and music for Dance. In addition to supporting the Fine Arts with your membership purchase, joining JAG has many benefits, including discount tickets and priority seating at many Fine Arts events. To join, click HERE.

• Volunteer : Looking to get more involved? All MS students and most HS students are part of the Arts in some way at SJCS. JAG is in need of parent volunteers to serve on the JAG committee for the 2024-2025 school year. We have various officer positions available and several committee vacancies. Come to a meeting to discover how much fun it can be supporting the Arts. Want more information? Contact the Jubilate Arts Guild president, Cindy Davis

Sponsorships

Attention business owners! Want to reach a larger audience? Try the JAG sponsorship program. We are offering our corporate sponsors a chance for promotion with advertising in the programs of our main Fine Arts events. The size of the ad depends on the level of sponsorship. In addition to an ad in our programs, our sponsors will get further promotion through social media, the Fine Arts’ website, and special signage in the lobby of our events. New this year: special sponsorship levels will also get a banner in the gym! For additional details and to become a sponsor, click HERE. If you join our sponsorship program before October 1, you will maximize your investment by being part of our first big Fine Arts event: the Fall Play. Questions? Email us HERE

From the Parents Guild

From the Parents Guild

Welcome to a new school year! We hope everyone is off to a great start. Just a reminder that all parents and caregivers of Saint Joseph’s students are automatically members of the Parents Guild – no need to join! It is the Parents Guild’s goal to engage parents with the school through volunteer opportunities. We provide support to

the administration, faculty and staff, as well as the student body. There are many ways to get involved and we hope everyone will take the opportunity to support our school community. Be on the lookout for Sign Up Genius emails throughout the year with all of the ways you can volunteer. Please reach out to us with any questions or ideas. We look forward to a fantastic year and serving with each of you!

School Store

Knights and Nobles, the Saint Joseph’s School Store is open every school day Monday- Friday (except Wednesday) from 10:30 AM-12:15 PM and 2:45-3:30 PM. Staffed by parent volunteers, the store is located at the entrance to the school cafeteria. The store stocks items such as snacks, candy, chips, and a variety of beverages. While the store is designated as a fundraising source for the Parents Guild, the School Store will have pricing comparable to the FLIK prices and will try to keep items reasonably priced. While visiting the school store, be sure to check out and purchase our spirit wear including ties, totes, trunk organizers, tumblers, umbrellas, and hats.

Special Thanks To…

• Stephanie Wilkins for setting up a volunteer schedule for our school store.

• Jessica Clements and Elaine Barnhill for running the PG table during Orientation

• All the parents that donated breakfast items for our Faculty & Staff Back to School breakfast.

• Palmetto Family Orthodontics for sponsoring our Household shirts

Student Illness

From the School Nurse

Students with signs or symptoms of illness should not attend school or extracurricular activities. Report absences due to illness to the Front Office.

Medication Policy

Students may not carry ANY medication on their person without physician permission, parent permission, AND permission from the school nurse to self-administer and self-monitor. Students with asthma who need to carry rescue inhalers should have updated action plans in Magnus. Failure to comply with the medication policy may result in exclusion from extracurricular activities or disciplinary action. Under no circumstance may a student carry controlled substances on their person.

Allergies

If your child has a life-threatening allergy, please make sure you have an updated care plan in Magnus Health AND emergency medication available in the health room prior to the first day of classes. Contact the nurse if you have questions about your student’s allergy or clarifying allergy information or care plans in Magnus.

From the Technology Services Department

Who do I go to for Chromebook help?

• Mrs. Cummings (Director of Technology) is available in her office on the Administratin Hall (Room A111).

• Mr. Sokol (Technology Assistant) is available in his classroom on the 3rd floor of the High School (Room B306).

• Mr. McClendon (Librarian) is available in the Llibrary.

Stylus for the Chromebook

Many of our Chromebooks come with a stylus, but it is not guaranteed. SJCS does not charge any student for a broken or lost stylus due to the vendor's high cost of the stylus. Because of that, there are some Chromebooks that do not have a stylus. You can provide your own. They are available at many places, and you can find inexpensive ones at Walmart, Amazon, Target, etc. If you would like to purchase one at the school, they are available for $3 (cash, we will not charge your account for this) in the Library, Mrs. Cummings' office, or Mr. Sokol's classroom.

Chromebook Cases

• Chromebooks must be carried in a case at all times. Some students like to carry their Chromebooks in their backpacks, but they still must be in a case.

• High School Only: This year we are offering a laptop sleeve to use in your backpack only. If you choose to use the sleeve, you can swap out your other case or check out the sleeve in addition to your standard case. The sleeve is ONLY to be used in your backpack. The standard case can be used standalone or in your backpack. If you would like a laptop sleeve, they are available in the library, Mrs. Cummings' office, or Mr. Sokol's classroom.

Damages and Losses

• The damage policy is such that insurance will cover the majority of the cost with a minimal $30 fee per damage charged to the student. If the Chromebook is not carried in a case, the student will be responsible for the entire fee. This fee can run into the $200-$300 range or more depending on the damage.

• Repair Costs: A $30 fee will be charged for each repair. A replacement power cord costs $20, and a replacement case costs $30.

• Reminder: You are responsible for the equipment checked out to you. If you lend your charger to a friend, you are responsible for tracking it down. At the end of the school year, you will be charged for any items checked out to you that are not returned (even if you turned in someone else's charger).
