As my first year as Chair of St. John Society (British Columbia and Yukon) draws to a close, I am pleased to present this letter for the Annual Report.

Leadership

Prior His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston Governor General of Canada

The year has been particularly challenging for all members of the St. John organization in B.C. and Yukon. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our staff, volunteers at all levels, instructors and our Provincial Board Members for the their support and steadfast leadership as we navigated through the year. The financial challenges of the past year have been met with determination and professionalism. We have made some tough decisions to ensure St. John Ambulance continues to make our communities safe and improve the lives of those we touch. In spite of all the challenges we faced, our communities continue to be served by dedicated volunteers who provided in excess of 244,000 hours in 2012, an increase of 8.8% from the previous year. These dedicated members are the face of St. John Ambulance in our communities, and we thank them for their tireless efforts.

Vice Prior The Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

In the upcoming year we will continue to implement strategies to grow our organization and I am confident the changes we have made in the past months will continue to strengthen and improve St. John Ambulance.

I came to St. John Ambulance at the end of 2012 with an appreciation of the many challenges the organization faced throughout the year and today we are currently addressing these challenges in a thoughtful and strategic manner. Many of us at SJA are happy to have 2012 behind us and embrace the many opportunities for change and growth. Our priorities in 2013 include building strong focused teams across all levels of the organization. Building our presence in communities and growing our commercial business using the power of the web, staying close to our core values and walking these values everyday. I’m looking forward to 2013. Sincerely,

Treasurer’s Report Notes We are pleased to report on the financial results for St. John Ambulance British Columbia and Yukon for the year ended December 31, 2012.

Training Fees

In 2012 the organization saw a decrease in Revenues from our commercial operations as a result of the extension of certificate renewals from 2 to 3 years in a number of the training programs we offer. This forced the organization to make some difficult choices to ensure that our expenses were kept in line to offset the reduction in revenues. Despite this swift action St John Ambulance still ended the year with a deficit. However solid expense controls along with a review of how we operate our commercial operations has set us up to deliver better financial results in the future.

Cost of Products Sold

St. John Ambulance is fortunate to have a substantial number of volunteers who contribute a significant amount of their time and talents to St. John Ambulance each year. Throughout British Columbia and Yukon our Volunteers represent St. John Ambulance and it is because of this that the Board of Directors and Management of the organization are committed to ensuring that the commercial operations support the Volunteers.

This revenue is derived from fees paid for various first aid training classes through 25 branches, partner providers and online training.

Cost of Products Sold increased to $523,493 in 2012 due to the increased demand.

Marketable Securities An unrealized gain on investments of $33,929 is included under “other income” in the Statement of Revenue & Expenses.

Donations and Grants Donations and Grants increased by 1% in 2012, up $10,599.

Other Expenses This includes items such as Advertising & Public Relations ($283,640), Bank charges and interest ($222,909), Volunteers ($274,728), Amortization ($591,352), Office and Miscellaneous ($623,922), and Telephone and Utilities ($360,713).

St. John Foundation (BC & Yukon)

I would like to thank the Finance Committee Members, the Finance Department staff and the Volunteers of St. John Ambulance for their ongoing commitment throughout the past year.

John Nadeau, Vice Chair & Treasurer, St. John Society (British Columbia and Yukon)
