St. John Ambulance allocates 27% of all revenue from our first aid training and the sales from our first aid kits, supplies, and equipment to our community service programs. In 2012, our volunteers donated over 244,070 hours of their time, providing first aid assistance to over 6,105 people in need at public events and activities throughout BC and the Yukon. More than 460 Therapy Dogs (and their Handlers) brightened the days of the elderly and the chronically ill at health and seniors’ facilities. 671 children and teens participated in our leadership-building Youth programs. As experts in first aid, these highly trained adult educators are committed to providing a positive classroom experience. St. John Ambulance’s dedication to quality includes random program monitoring, instructor mentoring and regularly scheduled instructor workshops and updates. No matter where you take your SJA training in BC or Yukon, you will receive the same high quality of instruction. Payment You may pay by VISA, MasterCard or American Express online or over the phone; in person at any Branch, cash, debit and company cheques are also accepted. Course prices include the cost of all class materials (except Emergency Medical Responder Accelerated), training supplies and one exam fee. Prepayment is required to confirm your registration and seat(s) in class. Storm Cancellation Policy If your class is cancelled due to severe weather conditions, every effort will be made to contact you. We also ask that you use your own discretion; should the weather/road conditions in your area be dangerous and you choose not to attend, we will gladly reschedule you to another class at no charge, as your safety comes first. Privacy Policy Your right to privacy is important to us, therefore St. John Ambulance generally exceeds the regulations under the Personal Information Protection and Electronics Documents Act and the BC Personal Information Protection Act. We do not share your information with anyone outside St. John Ambulance unless required by law, but we do use this information to communicate directly with you. Class reschedule or Cancellation by St. John Ambulance St. John Ambulance reserves the right to cancel or reschedule any class or course. In the event that a class must be cancelled, you will be informed by telephone or email in advance. You may then either reschedule for another class or receive full reimbursement of course fees. class Reschedule or Cancellation by Student All payments are non-refundable except as follows: For courses under 20 hours, change or refund requests require 2 full business days notice before the course date and a $20.00 service fee will be charged; For courses more than 20 hours, 5 full business days notice is required and a $75.00 service fee will be charged. Refunds are not available once a change is made or if cancellation is not received within the time required. Instead, the service fee will be charged and a St. John Ambulance Gift Card will be issued in the form of a course credit. A private class failing to cancel more than 5 business days prior to the scheduled program will be subject to a group cancellation fee; no refund is available after this five-day period. Infectious Illness If you are showing signs of infectious illness, such as coughing or fever, for the protection of your fellow students you may be asked to leave the class and invited to reschedule at a later date when you are in better health (there will be no reschedule fee applied).

Latex + other allergies St. John Ambulance is working hard to ensure a latex-free environment. However, we need your help! If you have any serious or life-threatening allergies, please inform the branch well in advance of your class.

Physical Capability Many courses require good mobility and physical health. If you have concerns about the level of activity required in a given course, contact your local branch in advance of your class.

Pre-Reading For All Courses It is strongly recommended that students complete their pre-reading before class. Exams include questions related to the pre-reading which may not be covered in class. Our courses are challenging – be prepared!

MFR's are highly trained volunteers who provide first aid coverage at various community events and disaster response.

Therapy Dog Visitation Program

Therapy Dog Program - caring volunteers (two-legged as well as four-legged ones) who visit care facilities, hospitals, etc. to provide companionship for individuals who are alone in the world.

We Can Help - Moi, j’aide is an innovative program in first aid for children in grade 3 or 4. The objective of the program is to introduce children to basic first aid by teaching them that they can help others and themselves by knowing where and how to get help. We Can Help encourages children to develop safety habits for life and helps to empower them in bad situations.

LifeSaver Students (BC-TLS-STUDENT)

• Course Time: 5 hours

LifeSaver is an introductory first aid course open to people in grade 6 and over. This course teaches five of the skills required most often to save a life such as shock, choking, CPR, wound care, burns, and poisoning. A St. John Ambulance instructor can come to the school to teach this course for $450 per 25 students or portion thereof.

Emergency First Aid Schools (BC-EFA-SCHOOL)

• Course Time: 8 hours

This Emergency First Aid course is excellent for preparing Students to take WorkSafeBC Level Occupational First Aid with St. John Ambulance. This course meets first aid requirements under Canada Labour Code for Basic First Aid and is taught by the teachers.

This course teaches teachers how to use St. John Ambulance materials to instruct Emergency First Aid and Lifesaver courses to their students.

Bear Aware: Travelling in Bear Country

Travelling in Bear Country provides a general knowledge about bears, their habits and behaviours. $20.00 It also discusses some ways to help prevent bear encounters, and ways to increase your chances of survival should a bear encounter or attack happen.

Bear Aware: Working in Bear Country

Working in Bear Country covers general bear facts as well as discussing safety procedures for $20.00 personnel working in the field, and the proper procedures for setting up and maintaining a safe camp.

Canada Labour Code: Part 2

Canada Labour Code: Part 2 is intended for employers and employees, members of health and safety $30.00 committees and representatives who are covered by Part 2 of the Canada Labour Code.

Confined Space Awareness

This online course identifies the characteristics of a confined space, describes the risks associated with $25.00 working in a confined space and the prescribed methods for controlling those risks, and explains the documentation requirements pertaining to confined space work. It meets the requirements for Awareness Level training.

Construction Safety This interactive, multimedia safety training program is a 15 module program designed to provide $65.00 Training System (CSTS) individuals with a solid base of knowledge about workplace safety. Contact your local branch for more information. Note: PST Equivalent Fire Safety

This course consists of four main sections including basic workplace fire safety awareness, fire safety and $20.00 prevention, fire extinguishers and the proper use of extinguishers.

H2S AWARENESS

Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) is a highly toxic and flammable gas. This course explains the properties of H2S, $20.00 identifies control measures, and provides a practical description of what to do in the event of exposure.

INFECTION CONTROL AND PREVENTION BASICS FOR HEALTH CARE WORKPLACES

The purpose of this course is to provide a foundation that you can build to improve your understanding $20.00 of routine practices, proper hand hygiene and the means of transmission of infectious agents. This course shows how infections spread and the routine practices you can use to prevent the transmission of microorganisms that cause infections in any healthcare setting.

Lockout-Tagout

This program explains the importance of Lockout-Tagout in safeguarding workers who operate machinery $20.00 or processes in industry. The basic tenets of safety are explained as are the specific stages and procedures of the Lockout-Tagout process.

Medical Terminology

The Medical Terminology course provides an introduction to the professional language used by those $280.00 who are directly and indirectly involved with the health care profession.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)

The course consists of: Introduction to TDG, its regulations and proper training, proper $35.00 documentation, safety marks and means of containment, forbidden goods, exemptions and special provisions, immediate reporting and procedures to follow in the event of an emergency.

WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)

This course meets the legislated worker training requirements for all Federal and Provincial $33.00 workplaces in all provinces and territories.

WHMIS Refresher

This course is intended for individuals who have previously taken WHMIS training. It is recommended $15.00 that individuals refresh WHMIS training on an annual basis.

Workplace Harassment Sensitivity Training

This course is designed for both management and non-management workers. Upon completion, $30.00 you will be equipped to recognize and properly address workplace harassment and to prevent such situations when possible.

H2S Alive info@bc.sja.ca This one-day course is intended for all workers who may be exposed to environments where Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) is present. Each student will be required to operate a detector tube device, operate a self-contained breathing apparatus, and perform breathing on a mannequin. Students must demonstrate required skills and obtain 70% on a written examination. Certified by ENFORM. Where is H2S Found1: • Petroleum industry, especially at oil and natural gas wells; in refineries, where H2S is removed from natural gas and oil; and in pipelines used to carry unrefined petroleum • Pulp and paper industry, where H2S is a by-product of wood breaking down into pulp • Construction industry, where H2S could be released during excavation work in swamps or old landfills • Sewers, sewage treatment plants, manure tanks, and other places where organic material breaks down without oxygen • Iron smelters, coke ovens, and other places where H2S may be a by-product • In some mines and tunnels where mineral rock may contain H2S Topics Covered: • Physical Properties of H2S • Initial Response Strategy • Occupational Exposure Limits • Health Hazards of H2S gas • Respiratory Protective Equipment (SCBA and SABA) - required lifting of approx 15 kg • Detection of H2S (Manual and Electronic) • Rescue Techniques (4 methods) - some lifting required • Rescue Breathing (CPR with mannequin) • Case Studies and Review • Written Examination "Every year, workers are accidentally exposed to unsafe levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), also called sour gas, sewer gas, stink damp, and hydrosulphuric acid. 725 Medical First Responders volunteered 118,478 hours of their time attending 1,558 events and providing first aid services to 6,105 people in need. 671 Youth Volunteers invested 78,734 hours of their time attending 405 events and providing first aid services to 525 people in need. 464 Therapy Dog Program Volunteers gave 33,794 hours of their time visiting over 234 health and seniors’ facilities. 218 Senior Volunteers invested 13,064 hours of their time to the above programs and more.
