The St John Cross – Badge of the Order The origins of the white eight pointed cross of St John can be traced back to around 1023 when the merchants of Amalfi restored the hospice in the Holy Land which had previously been established and destroyed. Raymond Du Puy, the second master of the Order, established the first code of conduct where at the ceremony of admittance of young men as Knights of the Order, they took the vow of the four Cardinal Virtues and the eight Beatitudes stemming from these virtues – all represented in the eight-pointed cross.

The Four Cardinal Virtues The four arms of the cross represent the Cardinal Virtues: The Amalfi Cross embellished with the Heraldic (Royal) Beasts

Prudence Common sense, intelligence and wisdom, good judgment, caution. Temperance Self-control, moderation.

Justice To act fairly and rightly towards others, weighing up self-interests and the rights & needs of others. Fortitude Courage, boldness, confidence, ability to confront fear & uncertainty.

The Beatitudes The eight points of the cross represent the Beatitudes: Humility Patience, modesty, unpretentious, someone who doesn’t see themself as more important than anyone else. Sympathy Caring, compassion, empathy, understanding, sharing similar feelings, understanding. Gentleness Considerate, kind, peaceful, pleasant. Truth Honesty, integrity, genuine. Compassion Consideration, empathy, kindness, sympathetic, desire to relive suffering of others. Unselfishness Charitable, sharing, generous, giving. Peace Harmony, friendship, unity, tranquillity. Endurance Persistence, continuing no matter what, courage, patience, stamina.

The St John Motto – Pro Fide - Pro Utilitate Hominum The Motto of the Order stems from the two key purposes and objects of the order. The two key objects are: (a)

The encouragement of all that makes for the spiritual and moral strengthening of mankind in accordance with the first great principle of the Order embodied in the Motto ‘Pro Fide’;

(b)

The encouragement and promotion of all work of humanity and charity for the relief of persons in sickness, distress, suffering or danger, without distinction of race, class or creed and the extension of the second great principle of the Order embodied in the Motto ‘Pro Utilitate Hominum’.

Pro Fide means For the Faith, (meaning the Christian faith) and Pro Utilitate Hominum means In the Service of Humanity.
