T

he St. John’s boys’ lacrosse program has its collective sights set on its fifth straight winning season and fifth straight playoff appearance under Coach Dan Phillips. With five returning seniors and 14 returning Varsity lettermen, this year’s squad is young but experienced. Led by Senior All-Conference defender Rob Cadle, and fellow captains Chris Balla (midfield), Ryan Fornatora (midfield) and Justin Rosenberg (goalie), the Cadets are poised to improve upon last year’s 12-8 mark. The Cadets play in arguably the most competitive high school lacrosse league in the nation, the Washington

Catholic Athletic Conference, featuring traditional rivalries such as DeMatha, Gonzaga and Good Counsel. And once again this year, WCAC opponents make up the heart of the St. John’s varsity lacrosse schedule, capped by the WCAC Championships in early May. The 2011 campaign opens with a game against The Heights at Georgetown University, followed by a tough home contest against perennial powerhouse St. Albans. Also looming large on the nonconference schedule are Mount St. Joseph’s, W.T. Woodson and Ballston Spa (NY).

S T. J O H N ’ S C O L L E G E B O Y S L A C R O S S E HISTORY 1980

Boys lacrosse at St. John’s began in 1980. After a 3-6 record in their first season, St. John’s improved to 6-3 in 1981. Jack Crawford and Chuck Johnston were two leaders in the early years of lacrosse. Crawford eventually played collegiate lacrosse at Johns Hopkins, while Johnston played at Drexel.

1985

An inconsistent regular season ended in triumph in 1985. Led by first year head coach Palmer Leutjen, St. John’s posted a 3-5 record. Entering the Washington Area Lacrosse League Tournament as decided underdogs, St. John’s avenged a regular season loss by defeating Robinson. St. John’s advanced to the semifinals and easily defeated Sandy Springs. The season ended on a high note as the Cadets 10-7 win over Oakton gave St. John’s a WALL Division B Championship.

2000

Cabell Maddux came in as head coach in 2000. He was a former All-American at Hobart College in New York, where he was a member of two NCAA Division III National Championship squads.

2002

In 2002, St. John’s posted a 15-5 record and faced off against DeMatha for the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title. However, DeMatha scored three early goals en route to a 15-8 win to claim the title.

2004

The 2004 team posted a 10-7 record and finished third in the WCAC. Earning All-WCAC First Team honors were: Vince Giganti, Cyrus Albertson, Riley Clark, Scott Collins and Brett Scott. Sean Reppard, Brian Jones, Colin Jackson and Scott Hall were named to the second team, while Chris Carroccio was an honorable mention selection.

2007

Danny Phillips was hired as the new head coach prior to the 2007 season. He had previously served as head coach at Good Cousel and Quince Orchard, both in Maryland. St. John’s posted a winning record in 2007, including a 9-0 mark against non-conference foes. However, their season ended with a first round defeat to St. Mary’s Ryken in the WCAC Tournament.

t. John’s College High School is a co-educational, Catholic secondary school located in the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Washington, DC. Sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, St. John’s was founded in 1851 and is the second oldest Christian Brothers school in the United States. St. John’s has been at the forefront of the education of today’s youth. The Christian Brothers are dedicated leaders and scholars who provide education and mentorship unlike other schools. We strive for excellence in teaching, while helping our students inquire a sense of Christian values. At the same time, our teachers also help students understand themselves with a respect and appreciation for others. For more than 150 years, St. John’s mission has been to educate the complete person. St. John’s provides each student with the necessary support and resources to become Christian leaders of today and tomorrow. Through our community service program, our students receive a sense of responsibility that allows them to appreciate the joys of selflessness and giving of ones self. Our students are also imparted with a greater sense of purpose through liturgies and religious instruction in a Christian atmosphere. Since we have a proud and honored history, several of our current students represent second, third and fourth generation of family members to attend St. John’s. The lessons and experiences that a St. John’s graduate receives will greatly influence their future. The school serves approximately 1,100 students from the Washington Metropolitan area. St. John’s welcomes students of every race, creed and background to study on our campus. St. John’s is located adjacent to Rock Creek National Park in Northwest Washington. Our campus is situated on Military Road, between Connecticut Avenue and 16th Street, two major thoroughfares that connect Downtown 2 • ST. JOH N’S COLLEG E H IG H SC HOOL

Washington and Montgomery County, Maryland. The 30acre campus provides students with the best and most state-of-the-art academic and athletic facilities. We invite you to learn more about our school.

MISSION

The St. John’s history is rich in tradition. Founded in 1851, St. John’s has earned a reputation for academic excellence, leadership development and athletic championships. Faithful to the charism of St. John Baptist de La Salle, St. John’s College High School is an independent, Catholic college preparatory school whose mission is to provide a human and Christian education to young men and women from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. St. John’s is a community of faith and zeal with dedicated Lasallian educators committed to the spiritual, academic, cultural, physical and moral development of the students. Rooted in Christian values, the Lasallian experience at St. John’s prepares young men and women for a life dedicated to leadership, achievement, and service to the community.

HISTORY

St. John’s College High School dates back to before the Civil War. The school was established in September of 1851 by Brother John of Mary, FSC, and two other Christian Brothers in St. Matthew’s parish in Washington. After the Brothers were forced to abandon the school in 1855, they returned to Washington in 1866 to teach at St. Patrick’s Church. Classes for the free school for poor children were held in the basement of Carroll Hall on the St. Patrick’s property. The academy classes for paying students operated in the Brothers’ residence. However, the Brothers taught at St. Patrick’s for only two years. The school was relocated to the Cathedral of St. Matthew’s in 1870. When St. Matthew’s Institute was incorporated in 1870, Brother Tobias signed his birth name, Henry Wall, to the document to become the school’s first president. After seven years at St. Patrick’s, the Brothers

S T. J O H N ’ S C O L L E G E B O Y S L A C R O S S E purchased the property at 1225 Vermont Avenue in 1878. After the property was bought from Gen. Montgomery Cunningham Meigs, an architect and contractor were hired to construct the new school. The new school opened its doors for the first time on Washington’s Birthday, Feb. 22, 1880. When the school opened, it was know as St. John’s Institute. In June of 1880, the name was changed to St. John’s Collegiate Institute. In June of 1887, St. John’s College High School was incorporated. That same year, the college was incorporated under the District of Columbia statutes with the power to confer Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. By 1919, bachelor’s degrees were offered in general arts, modern language and three science disciplines. However, as the undergraduate departments of local universities expanded, the St. John’s Board of Trustees discontinued the college department in 1921 and devoted the school facilities to secondary education. Along with the campus expansion, St. John’s enrollment continued to grow during and after World War II. The growth made it apparent that the Vermont Avenue campus was becoming too small for St. John’s. In an effort to alieveate some cramped quarters, the Christian Brothers purchased the 27-acre Airlie Estate on July 8, 1946. The property was located at the intersection of Military Rd. and 27th Street and bounded by Rock Creek Park in the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Northwest Washington. As St. John’s celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1951, it was apparent that the Vermont Avenue facilities were no longer adequate. The decision was made to move St. John’s to the Military Road campus. On Sept. 14, 1959, the new St. John’s opened its doors. Brother Luke proclaimed that the new school “is a dream of over a hundred years that has been realized.” With 300 freshmen entering for the 1959-60 academic year, the total enrollment stood at 1,150. St. John’s continued to grow in the late 1960’s and

1970’s, From 1969 to 1972, an eighth grade was added to the school, a development office was created and the graduation was moved to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. In addition, the gymnasium was completed in 1961 and a new football stadium was built in 1976. These and other changes helped St. John’s continue to prosper for the next two decades. As the school entered the last decade of the 20th century, major changes were announced in 1990. The changes were made after a two-year study and consultation by the administration. In the 199192 academic year, St. John’s welcomed over 100 young women to the school for the first time. The JROTC program was also made an elective program that was open to any student. The changes were enacted by a St. John’s Planning Task Force in 1990 that comprised of parents, alumni, board members, administrators and teachers. The changes were made in light of a decline of student enrollment in the Washington metro area. Since moving to the Military Road campus, St. John’s continued to be a leader in private school education in the Washington area. However, in the late 1990’s, St. John’s Board of Directors decided that an upgrade to the existing facilities was needed. Alumni, parents and friends responded by providing the necessary funds to complete several renovation projects from 1998-2008 including: • Construction on the two-story Roth Gymnasium in 2000. • The completion of the Scaggs Center in 2001 for new offices for the President’s Office and the Alumni & Development Office. • Construction of the James V. Kimsey Science Center in 2002, which included a new computer center. • Upgrading of all existing classrooms and the library (2003), Construction of a new field turf stadium (2004) and renovations to the school chapel (2004), auditorium (2005), arts center and band room and existing sports stadiums. evin Plank, SJC class of 1990 and MVP of the 1989 Football Championship victory against Dematha, is the founder and owner of Under Armour, the originator of performance apparel. Kevin began the company in 1996. Since then, Under Armour has been an industry leader with annual average growth of nearly 250 percent. Last year, Under Armour sold shares of the company for the first time. The company posted the most successful initial product offering by an American company in five years and the stock has continued to perform extraordinarily well. Under Armour is now an official supplier to Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, the NFL, and just about every Division I-A college-football program. In fact, Under Armour now holds market share of more than 70 percent in the compression performance apparel market. The line of clothing is designed to keep athletes cool in the hot weather and warm in the cold weather while also helping to alleviate muscle fatigue and wick sweat away from the body.

In 2006, Kevin was named the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Retail and Consumer Products Category. In 2005, Kevin was named Industrialist Of The Year by The Baltimore Museum of Industry. In 2002, he was selected as the CEO of the Year by Baltimore Smart CEO Magazine for his role in changing the entire apparel industry and for exponential profit growth during a tough economic climate. Kevin has also been inducted into the Baltimore Business Journal’s Hall of Fame. In 2007, St. John’s became one of just four high schools nationwide to wear Under Armour uniforms. The St. John’s varsity team will be wearing Under Armour cleats as the official team shoe. In addition to the Under Armour uniforms and cleats, players at St. John’s wear Under Armour Jackets and Pants, Sweatshirts and Sweatpants, Practice Reversibles and Shorts, Loosegear T-Shirts, Performance Socks, and much more.
