2012 COACHES
COACH JOE PATTERSON Joe Patterson (SJC Class of 1993) is entering his ninth season as the head coach of St. John’s. During his first eight seasons, the Cadets made the playoffs seven times and beat archrival Gonzaga six times. The Cadets have also spent at least a portion of seven out of the eight seasons in The Washington Post’s Top Twenty, which places them well within the top ten percent of Metropolitan Area football programs. The 50-29 regular season record over the eight seasons is the best eight-year stretch for St. John’s football since the 1970s. This is Coach Patterson’s 16th year as a high school football coach. He spent five years as the head freshman coach at St. John’s before moving on to the varsity staff at Georgetown Prep. During the course of his two years at Prep, the Little Hoyas amassed a 17-1 record and secured a No. 1 ranking in The Washington Post. SJC’s success versus Gonzaga (the Cadets winning six out of the last eight games) has been a true reversal of fortunes as prior to Coach Patterson’s taking over, Gonzaga had won 22 of the previous 25 matchups.

During his time as the varsity head coach at St. John’s, Coach Patterson has coached four All-Americans, including Rico McCoy (2004), Tony Tucker (2006), Peter White (2008), and Kevin McReynolds (2010). In addition, 54 of his players have gone on to play Division I-A or Division I-AA football. Coach Patterson was only 28 years old when he was named head varsity coach at St. John’s. He graduated as valedictorian from St. John’s and was taught by SJC Hall of Famers Doonie Waldron (Class of 1949) and Joe Gallagher (Class of 1939). Coach Patterson began teaching and coaching at St. John’s after graduating Summa Cum Laude with a triple major from Villanova University. He later received his Master’s Degree from the Catholic University of America. During his teaching career at St. John’s, Coach Patterson has won three different Teacher-of- the-Year awards, including the Archdiocese’s Veteran Teacher of the Year Award. Coach Patterson currently teaches Honors American Literature. During his tenure at St. John’s, he has also taught a Poe and Hawthorne senior elective, Advanced Editing, Multi-Media Journalism, Print Journalism, Video Journalism, Sophomore Scholars, English 10, and World History. Coach Patterson lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife Jana, his daughters Anne and Bernadette, and his four sons, Tommy, Patrick, Edward, and soon-to-be-born Maximilian.

RASHOD GILLESPIE
Varsity Defensive Coordinator Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 10 High School: Calvin Coolidge (DC) Colleges: West Virginia and Glenville State Coach Gillespie is entering his eighth season as the SJC defensive coordinator and his tenth season at St. John’s. Prior to coming to SJC, Coach Gillespie served as the offensive coordinator at Calvin Coolidge High School, his alma mater. As a player at Coolidge, he was named the Offensive Player of the Year for the DCIAA in 1993. He ranked first in Washington rushing that season and was given All-Met Honorable Mention. Coach Gillespie then attended West Virginia University, where he was a standout on special teams. He transferred to Glenville State College where he earned All-Conference honors in 1998 and played in the National All-Star College Football Classic. In addition to being SJC’s defensive coordinator, Coach Gillespie is also the strength and conditioning coach. Coach Gillespie is currently an educator in the St. John’s Benilde Program. He and his wife Lakeeda live in Washington, D.C., with their daughters Aniya, Gianni, and Marley, and newborn son Lathan.

Coach Ward graduated from St. John’s in 1993 before beginning a stellar career at the University of Maryland, where he was a four-year starter (one year as a defensive tackle and three years as an offensive guard). The Terps recognized Ward with the prestigious A.V. Williams Award. As a player at St. John’s, Coach Ward helped anchor a solid Cadet team that advanced to the championship game. Coach Ward was a two-time All-American, two-time All-Met player, and two-time all-league player. He was also awarded the Mush Dubofsky Award at St. John’s, which is given to the player who made the biggest contribution to the team. He was recently inducted into the St. John’s Hall of Fame. Coach Ward is entering his second year as the Assistant Athletic Director at St. John’s. He also teaches Physical Education. Prior to accepting the administrative position at St. John’s, Coach Ward had served as an athletic director and teacher at The Heights School in Potomac, Md. As a coach at St. John’s, Coach Ward has met with tremendous success. In fact, in each of his twelve seasons at St. John’s, at least one lineman has been named first-team all-conference. Also, DCSportsfan recognized Coach Ward as the Metropolitan Area’s Assistant Coach of the Year. Recently, Coach Ward established the Ward Line Academy, which works with linemen in grades six and up in a one-on-one setting.

PHIL SAVOY Varsity Wide Receivers Coach
Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 10 High School: Carroll (DC) College: University of Colorado Coach Savoy returns for his tenth season as the varsity wide receivers coach. After graduating from Carroll High School, Coach Savoy went on to play wide receiver for the University of Colorado, where he ranked second all-time in receptions for the Buffaloes. He also set a university record with eight catches in a single quarter. As a senior, he was an All-Big 12 selection. After being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, Coach Savoy spent time with the Baltimore Ravens as a special teams player. He also spent time with the Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams. After his time in the NFL, he played in the Arena Football League. Coach Savoy and his wife Kristina live in Washington, D.C., with their daughter Chynna and their newborn son Malachi.

Coach Daniels is entering his fourth season as the varsity defensive backs coach after previously serving as the St. John’s JV Head Coach. He joined the St. John’s staff after serving for two years as the JV Head Coach and Varsity Running Backs Coach at DuVal High School, and two years as the Varsity Special Teams and Running Backs coach at Reservoir High School. Coach Daniels attended DuVal High School (Class of 1995), where he played line and linebacker. In college, he was a member of Virginia State’s CIAA Championship team. At Virginia State, Coach Daniels again played linebacker. This past season, three of the players Coach Daniels directly coached attained first-team all-conference honors: Billy Webb (DB), Zach Quarles (KR), and Peter Rosa (kicker). Coach Daniels is currently an educator in the Prince George’s County school system. He and his wife, Ivy, have two daughters, Sarah and Lauren. They live in Accokeek, Md.

Coach Molloy graduated from St. John’s in 1994. During his time on the varsity at St. John’s, Coach Molloy was both a starting tight end and a starting quarterback. As a quarterback, he earned allconference honors his senior season. Coach Molloy also played on the varsity basketball team while attending St. John’s. He then played tight end for the Virginia Military Institute, where again he earned all-conference honors. He is in his seventh season on the St. John’s staff. Coach Molloy teaches at St. Jane DeChantal in Bethesda, Md. He lives in Silver Spring, Md., with his wife Gretchen. His father, James Molloy, is a 1958 graduate of St. John’s.

Varsity Defensive Line Coach Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 2 High School: St. John’s (DC) College: Brown University
Coach Burlin was a two-time first-team all-conference player and a two-year captain at St. John’s, where he also won the Mush Dubofsky Award (given to the player who has made the greatest contribution to SJC football during his high school career) as a senior. A graduate in the Class of 2002, he went on to have a stellar career on the defensive line at Brown University, where his 2005 team won the Ivy League and finished 9-1. A three-year starter at defensive tackle, he won the Frederick “Fritz” Pollard Award as a senior. In returning to St. John’s, Coach Burlin was reunited with Coach Patterson, who coached him on the freshman team in 1998, and Coach Ward, who coached him at the varsity level. RICO MCCOY Varsity Linebacker Coach
Seasons Coaching at St. John’s:1 High School: St. John’s (DC) College: Tennessee
Rico McCoy
Coach McCoy returns to his alma mater, where he earned All-American and First-Team All-Met honors as a linebacker. He was the Cadets’ leading tackler and was named captain of the Army All-American Game, which aired on NBC. A highly coveted college recruit, Coach McCoy eventually chose Tennessee over Ohio State. He finished his Tennessee career ranked as one of their top five tacklers of all-time. His career solo tackles also ranked him in the top five of all-time in the SEC. Coach McCoy also led the SEC in solo tackles and forced fumbles during his senior season. He spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and Edmonton Eskimos before returning to the DC area. As a student at St. John’s, Coach McCoy was named the Mush Dubofsky Award winner for 2004, joining an elite fraternity of St. John’s football players. He was also named Gatorade Player of the Year for DC.
TED ELSASSER Kicking Coach
Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 2 High School: Englewood School for Boys (NJ) College: Rutgers, Medical University of South Carolina (PhD) Coach Elsasser returns for his second season as the kicking and punting coach for the St. John’s program. In his first season, he guided Peter Rosa to first-team all-conference honors. Coach Elsasser also serves as the lead instructor in the Kick and Punt Camp that St. John’s puts on for 6th through 9th graders during the last week in June. Coach Elsasser’s son, Matt (SJC Class of 2010), earned first-team all-conference honors at St. John’s. As a junior, Matt kicked four field goals with time running out. He was named captain by his peers for his senior season. Coach Elsasser previously coached special teams, including kicking and punting, at Pallotti High School. He and his wife Marian live in Berwyn Heights, Md.

Varsity Assistant Line Coach Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 1 High School: St. John’s (DC) College: Akron Coach Ward joins the varsity staff as an assistant line coach. He started every game (48 total) for all four years at the University of Akron as both a guard and a center. He was named team captain his senior year and then went on to play for both the Orlando Predators and the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League. A two-time first-team all-conference lineman at St. John’s, Coach Ward received the Mush Dubofsky Award as a senior, was named the Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year for D.C., and was named team captain. A two-way player, he achieved the remarkable feat of leading the team in tackles from his defensive line position. As a student at St. John’s, he was elected Vice President of the student body and set the bar for all future anchormen as one of the best personalities of all-time on the SJC Daily News show. Varsity Assistant Line Coach Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 4 High School: St. John’s (DC) College: Virginia Union Coach Rodgers moves up to the varsity staff after serving as a freshman coach for three season. In his two most recent seasons at St. John’s, he was the freshman head coach, during which time the freshmen only lost one game each season. Coach Rodgers came to St. John’s after being the Head Coach at Friendship Junior Academy in Washington, D.C. Previous to that, he was a graduate assistant at Virginia Union, where he had starred as a football player. In fact, during his senior season, he helped the Panthers win the conference championship. He was also recognized with first-team all-conference honors at Virginia Union and was selected to play in the College Football National All-Star Game in Louisville, Ky. At St. John’s, he was a starter on both the offensive line and the defensive line. Coach Rodgers is currently an educator in the D.C. public school system and lives in Washington with his wife Maureen.

Varsity Running Backs Coach Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 1 High School: Waltham (MA) College: Boston College Coach English joins the St. John’s staff as the running backs coach. As a high school athlete, he was named First-Team All-State as a running back and led his team to the Massachusetts Division-I State Championship. As a linebacker at Boston College, he was named one of the defensive captains and helped the Eagles win both the Car Quest Bowl and the Aloha Bowl. He was also named Big East Defensive Player of the Week during his senior season. Coach English and his wife have two children and live in Washington, D.C.

Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 6 High School: H.D. Woodson (DC) College: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Coach Baylor is entering his sixth season at St. John’s and his third season as the JV Head Coach. His teams are noted for their competitive spirit and perseverance. Coach Baylor came to St. John’s via the Peppermill Boys and Girls Club. Coach Baylor’s nephew, Brandon, graduated from St. John’s and earned a scholarship to play football at the University of Albany. Coach Baylor previously coached the JV Offensive and Defensive Lines before being named JV Head Coach. Coach Baylor works as a high school football referee and also serves as a backup Game Day Assistant for the Washington Redskins’ home games.

Coach Powell enters his fifth year on the staff and his first as the JV offensive coordinator after several years of coaching football at area boys and girls clubs, including Capitol Heights and Forestville. He also coached baseball at those two clubs. In addition, he coached baseball at District Heights, where his team notched an undefeated season. Coach Powell is a police officer in the Metropolitan Police Department. He and his wife, Genester, reside in Forestville and have two children, Charles (22) and Bajour (16).

Freshman Head Coach Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 3 High School: Northwestern (MD) College: Bowie State
Coach Lee enters his third season coaching at St. John’s and his first as the Head Freshman Coach. He had previously held the position of Junior Varsity Offensive Coordinator. Prior to St. John’s, Coach Lee had coached for nine years at Northwestern High School (JV Head Coach and assistant on the varsity staff), before moving to the boys club level. He coached at White Oak for eight seasons, New Carrollton for four years, and Montgomery Village for one year. As an athlete at Northwestern, Coach Lee played wide receiver, running back, and defensive back.

Freshman Line Coach Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 1 High School: Bethesda-Chevy Chase (MD) College: Stillman College Coach Baker joins the St. John’s staff, reuniting with Coach Lee, with whom he had coached at the boys club level. Coach Baker has coached at several different boys clubs, including head coaching jobs at Briggs Chaney, Unity, and the Blitz. After graduating from college (where he was the captain of the basketball team), he earned his master’s degree from Bowie State. Coach Baker and his wife have two children and reside in Wheaton, Md.

Freshman Quarterbacks Coach Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 8 High School: Kensington (NY) ) Colleges: West Virginia State Coach Bluford returns for his fifth consecutive season on the freshman coaching staff. During those five seasons, the freshman teams have posted a 31-6 record. In the past, Coach Bluford also served as the varsity quarterbacks coach. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the freshman staff having previously served on the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity staffs at St. John’s. His son, Jay, was a two-year starter at quarterback for St. John’s and is a 2005 graduate. Jay just recently graduated from Prairie View University, a Division I-AA school in Texas, where he played quarterback and helped the Panthers go 9-1 his senior season.

Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 2 High School: Hampton (VA) College: University of Maryland Coach Hudson returns for his second season on the freshman staff having previously served on the freshman staff at Good Counsel for five seasons. Prior to his stint with the Falcons, he had won two Rockville championships with the St. Mary’s Mustangs as the Offensive and Defensive Line Coach. Coach Hudson has also coached basketball, softball, and soccer in the Rockville recreational leagues. He earned his master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and currently works for the DHS Domestic Nuclear Detection Office. Coach Hudson and his wife Rose live in Rockville, Md.

Freshman Offensive Coordinator Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 1 High School: Babylon Union (NY) College: SUNY Cortland Coach Egan is beginning his first year in the St. John’s Football Program and his first year as a member of the St. John’s faculty. Prior to St. John’s, he coached football in Babylon, New York, for four years. He has also coached baseball and track. A two-time member of the all-county football team in high school, he helped his team win three county championships. Coach Egan will be teaching in the Social Studies Department. His sister is currently a Spanish teacher at St. John’s. Coach Egan and his wife live in Mt. Airy, Maryland.

Freshman Assistant Coach Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 8 High School: Walter Johnson College: Catholic University A computers teacher at St. John’s, Coach York is returning for his eighth season as a coach on the St. John’s staff. A 1970 graduate of Walter Johnson High School, Coach York went on to play wide receiver, cornerback, and punter for the Catholic University of America. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a computer science degree. Coach York is married with four children, including Stephen, a 2002 graduate of St. John’s.

Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 2 High School: St. John’s (DC) Colleges: Morgan State and Bowie State Coach Davis returns to his alma mater as the Junior Varsity Line Coach. As a student at St. John’s, he played defensive end and offensive tackle, winning the Michael Crouch Award as the Unsung Hero. Coach Davis went on to play linebacker at Morgan State and Bowie State, where he earned All-Academic honors. He later earned a degree in Homeland Security and Security Management from the University of Massachusetts. Coach Davis has coached football at the varsity level for Hyde Charter School and has been a law enforcement instructor for 14 years. He has earned multiple black belts in various systems, including dijitsu. David Davis

Junior Varsity Linebackers Coach Seasons Coaching at St. John’s: 2 High School: Penncrest (PA) Colleges: Dickinson College Coach O’Donnell joined the JV staff last season to work with the linebackers. Previously, he had coached at his alma mater Penncrest in Media, Pennsylvania, as well as at the DC Police Boys Club. As a player, Coach O’Donnell was an all-league safety and helped his team to a 9-1 record. At Dickinson College, he played outside linebacker and was named team captain. During his time at Dickinson, the team was two-time conference champions and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs. Coach O’Donnell currently resides in Washington, D.C.
