“When I visited a couple of the all girls’ schools, I would sit with girls and the topic of the conversation would be boys. When I came to St. John’s, it was entirely different. I was sitting with boys and girls and we were talking about everything.” — Comment from a freshman student

Lasallian Education

The shared Lasallian heritage is more than just an educational movement – it is a living reality that we experience daily in our work and in our lives. Inspired by the charism of John Baptist de La Salle, St. John’s provides countless educational opportunities inside and outside the classroom.

Beyond the walls of St. John’s, Lasallian schools are in more than 80 countries throughout the world – educating over 1 million students.

College Preparatory St. John’s offers each student a pre-collegiate curriculum with instilled values of faith and Christian service. We offer more AP courses than most other schools, which means you can earn more college credits before you graduate. In addition, you will receive personalized support in developing your plan for college starting your freshman year and continuing until graduation.

CO-EDUCATIONAL Research shows that co-education promotes the following among male and female students: • High self-esteem • Positive outlook on math and science • Respect for the opposite sex • A positive learning environment • Broad participation in sports • Better behavior • Assertiveness in the classroom • Easier transition into collegiate life • Ambitious career goals 3

The real world is made up of many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and so is St. John’s. We are co-educational, which means that different ideas can be shared from different viewpoints. This gives us an incredibly diverse student population.

MORE AP COURSES

St. John’s is proud to offer an Honors Program for academically gifted students. Students are invited to enroll in our Honors Program of Studies after they are accepted into St. John’s. Honors and Advanced Placement classes are offered in every subject area, and students have the ability to create a flexible course of study that can be tailored to their interest and ability level. High school placement test scores determine Honors English and Honors Biology placement in the freshman year, and placement tests are given for Honors Math and upper-level foreign language classes. After 9th grade, students are able to place into Honors and AP courses based upon academic performance.

A Living Laboratory In 2015, St. John’s welcomed several new residents to campus – the fish, mollusks, coral and sea anemones that call the school’s new 410-gallon reef aquarium home. The saltwater tank serves as a living laboratory for our science classes, allowing our marine biology students to perform fieldwork right here on campus. The aquarium has already become a point of interest for students and visitors alike, as a tank this size is very rarely seen in a school environment.

De La Salle Scholars Program St. John’s Scholars Program provides a four-year experience that takes the traditional Honors track in most high schools to a new level through critical thinking, discovery and discourse. It provides students that achieve at the highest level an opportunity to mature intellectually. They learn philosophy and focus on understanding the human condition, living a just life of faith and service. Scholars emerge from the program as young men and women who are faithful, engaged and committed to progress throughout the world. De La Salle Scholars are selected on the basis of their performance during their 7th and 8th grade years, recommendations, high school placement test scores and their application, which includes an essay.

The Socratic Seminar for Scholars The ancient Greek philosopher Socrates guided his students by constant questioning, forcing them to think and develop opinions for themselves. In their senior year, Scholars will question themselves and each other in order to gain knowledge. They will come to their own conclusions about education, reality, materialism, justice, morality and other values. Students will learn to think on their feet with confidence, question without prejudice or bias and scrutinize their opinions in order to gain a stronger grasp on their own independent-mindedness.

Scholars are able to take part in a wide range of field experiences. Some of the places that Scholars have explored include: • Shakespeare Theatre (Student Matinees) • Newseum • The Corcoran Museum of Art • Marian Koshland Science Museum • Smithsonian Museums (National Gallery, Dulles Air and Space Museum) • Forensic Labs in the Natural History Museum • United States Supreme Court • National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception • Franciscan Monastery • Mount Vernon • Camden Yards • The National Cathedral

Each Scholar is mentored by the director of the scholars program, who is also their college counselor during their junior and senior years.

Voyage to Ancient Civilizations Every two years, Scholars will have an opportunity to travel internationally during spring break. The trip will take students to the sites at the center of the ancient world, where culture, early democracy and civilization flourished.

During their senior year, Scholars complete an independent study project – their ultimate opportunity for experiential learning. Some examples of past projects include: • Creation of a human-powered generator • Measuring the carbon footprint of the produce purchased in Montgomery County • “ACL/MCL Injuries in Women’s Soccer: Causes, Prevention, and Rehabilitation” • Creation and implementation of a school newspaper at San Miguel Middle School • “The History of Pattern in Math and Music” • Connection between Nigerian food and culture

BENILDE PROGRAM

Named for visionary Lasallian educator St. Benilde Pierre Romancon, our Benilde program offers a college preparatory program for highly motivated students with mild learning disabilities. Students attend regular classes, not remedial or special education classes, and classes are not changed or modified for the students. Within the Benilde program, each student receives one daily period of resource instruction in order to develop skills such as time management, note taking and use of study guides, which help ensure success in a college preparatory curriculum. Benilde graduates have gone on to study at competitive four-year universities and colleges including Bucknell, Hofstra, Penn State, Catholic University, University of Maryland and Villanova. Benilde students are part of and participate in every aspect of the St. John’s experience. A Benilde student can receive support throughout their four years at St. John’s, although students tend to remain in the program for approximately two years.

The Entrepreneurial Center for INNOVATION and LEADERSHIP “A Lasallian education must continually challenge itself to be creative while remaining faithful to its origins.” — St. John Baptist de La Salle

The Entrepreneurial Center for Innovation and Leadership is founded upon St. John’s long history of developing the whole student while instilling a sense of confidence in creative and independent thinking. The primary goal of innovation is to improve the global human condition, and graduates from this program will make a difference in the world by combining their innovative spirit with the values of compassion, personal responsibility and service to others.

The Senior Capstone Seminar Students who have successfully completed all of the prerequisites may apply for the Senior Capstone Seminar, which is designed to develop a passion for innovation and advance the student’s entrepreneurial skills in an environment of healthy competition. Students will have coursework and unique field experiences focused on real-life innovation, as well as opportunities to meet with and question successful entrepreneurs. “We strongly believe that technology is an essential component of a comprehensive secondary education. The future of education is not to ‘add on’ technology, but to have seamless integration in the classroom.”

Online Research Databases accessible from student iPads

St. John’s was one of the first schools in the Washington, DC, area to incorporate a school-wide 1:1 iPad program. Using these tablets, students are able to turn in their assignments, take notes, watch digital lessons, make flashcards, participate in whiteboard exercises and review teacher presentations from any location. Learning networks allow for online group study and virtual office hours with the faculty, providing more one-on-one interaction. There is no additional cost to families for this program. St. John’s believes that technology is an essential part of any education, and so the school does not charge a technology or equipment fee. For our students, the benefits of this program include: • Global collaboration with experts expands the learning environment • Digital organization and online storage allow access to course notes and materials both at home and at school • More than 90% of courses use cost-effective eBooks • Access to online audio and digital content teaches concepts in interesting and creative ways • Networking capabilities allow students to work online with students from St. John’s and other schools • Faculty members incorporate innovative instructional methods, such as the flipped classroom, and provide instant, meaningful feedback

FITZPATRICK LIBRARY What’s in our library…other than books? More than just a collection of books and laptop computers (actually, a large collection of both), Fizpatrick Library is a place where you can learn the skills you’ll need in college. You will develop research skills in order to find what you need in databases and the ability to evaluate your findings. As you discover more about your areas of interest, the library staff will help you find a wealth of information on the topics you’re excited about. 13

The Corps of Cadets: A CLASS, A CLUB AND A TEAM. For more than 100 years, St. John’s Corps of Cadets has forged young men and women into leaders. This elective program provides an interesting, challenging, rewarding and fun course of study that teaches students everything from public speaking to financial planning to team building. Through this program, students learn to become better citizens ready to lead their peers and serve their communities. In addition to coursework, cadets have the option to join several extracurricular groups, including: • Color Guard: Presents the colors at formal ceremonies and various events throughout Washington, DC. • Drill Team: Competes at drill competitions throughout the metro area. • Raiders Team: A physical and competitive team that gives cadets the opportunity to participate in an Army physical fitness test, land navigation test, rope bridge competition, first aid and 5K Road March. • Rifle Team: A nationally competitive group.

A Century of Leadership Established by the U.S. Congress in 1915, St. John’s Corps of Cadets is one of the nation’s original JROTC programs and the oldest leadership program in the country. Although most cadets do not continue in any sort of military program after high school, those who are interested have great success in being admitted to West Point and the Naval, Air Force and Coast Guard academies, as well as earning ROTC college scholarships.

Busy Bees St. John’s Eco Club is responsible for the care and maintenance of the honeybee colony on campus. After studying the ways a hive can boost local ecology, club members presented a proposal to bring a hive to St. John’s to the school’s administration. It’s easy to find friends who are interested in the same things you are. St. John’s may be a school of 1,000, but once you’re here it feels like a school of 400. You’ll discover it’s just the right size for you. Theater, no experience necessary. Each year, St. John’s Theatre produces at least two and often three productions, including a comedy or drama in the fall and a musical in the spring. More than half of the actors in our plays come to St. John’s without any prior experience in theater. They get talked into performing on stage by a friend, or are encouraged by a teacher, and discover they have a talent for it. Then, they discover they love it.

One distinct mark of a Lasallian education is that faith is at the heart of everything we do. At St. John’s we support this philosophy with more than a four-year program of religious study. To complement what is learned in the classroom, St. John’s surrounds students with vibrant and active campus ministry programs including Christian service activities, liturgies and retreat experiences every year. Seniors often remark that the four-day Kairos retreat is the capstone to their St. John’s education. The true “Lasallian stamp” is the continuing of a 300-year-old prayer tradition of remembering the presence of God in our lives. Before a game, before class and throughout the day students in Lasallian schools around the world echo the words of our founder “Live Jesus in our hearts…Forever.”

Communication

IS A LEADERSHIP SKILL

That is why we work across all departments to define what it means to write well in each discipline. Our writing curriculum is designed to help students achieve excellent writing skills, whether you’re writing a history paper or a short story for English.

We encourage you to speak your mind. Classes at St. John’s are often collaborative, breaking down into smaller groups for more intense discussions. Ideas are shared and students learn to express their opinions and support their findings with evidence and facts.

Lasallian Peer Ministers Peer Ministry is a senior elective class that begins with a leadership seminar, which prepares students to plan and facilitate retreats. Each Peer Minister serves as a mentor to a small group of freshmen to acclimate them to student life at St. John’s. They also plan and manage the retreats for freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Students may apply to become Peer Ministers in the spring of their junior year. Retreats Freshmen and sophomores participate in a variety of one-day, off-campus retreats. Juniors go on an overnight retreat and seniors may attend Kairos, a four-day off-campus experience led by both faculty and students.

Gallery of Classes Heritage Hall may look like just another hallway between classrooms. But, along the walls are the photographs of all the graduating classes of St. John’s from this year and dating back to 1851. THE

ATHLETIC PROGRAMS at St. John’s give students

the opportunity to compete at a championship level, while teaching the importance of teamwork, leadership and having fun.

Campus Our 28-acre campus gives us plenty of space for athletic fields. We have three artificial turf fields for our football, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, rugby and softball teams. Rock Creek Park is adjacent to our campus, providing a beautiful setting for our cross country team’s training runs. Gymnasiums The Gallagher and Roth gymnasiums include a full-size collegiate basketball court, an auxiliary gymnasium, wrestling rooms, classrooms for reviewing game film and a 2,000-square-foot weight room with state-of-the-art equipment. St. John’s has two full-time performance training coaches who provide professional-level strength and conditioning training to each sports team, as well as two full-time athletic trainers who provide health care to our student-athletes and work with our sports medicine class. Our Teams Travel Many of our varsity teams travel during the year and over the summer. These opportunities are not only fun for our student-athletes, but they also expose our players to talented national and international competition. Travel, however, is not limited to athletes; our performing arts students and our Corps of Cadets also compete at the local, regional and national levels. Beyond Campus Our athletic facilities extend beyond the borders of St. John’s campus. Our ice hockey team has its home rink at Rockville Ice Arena, including preferred ice time for practices and games. The crew team is based at Thompson Boat Center, located on the Potomac River in Georgetown.

Opening Minds. Unlocking Talents. Building Leaders. We are able to introduce our students to new paths of learning, new concepts of thought and broader horizons of experience. Our students are enlightened every day by the cultural, religious and socio-economic differences that make up their world. In the classroom, we open their minds academically and help them become lifelong learners. As students explore, they discover their hidden talents and interests. We help provide the tools and guidance to unlock and build on each and every one. Our students develop their talents into careers and lifelong pursuits. We live and profess our Lasallian charism. Our students learn from our example as well as from each other. In doing so, they become confident in their own abilities and personalities. They become comfortable in their spirituality and the calling to a lifetime of service. St. John’s students become, in a real sense, leaders. They are able to take charge of their futures and lead their lives with purpose and honor while serving others.

A lifetime of learning.

100% COLLEGE PLACEMENT All of St. John’s graduates are accepted into a four-year college or university. For a family, the route to college can be confusing and full of unexpected obstacles and wrong turns. The counseling program at St. John’s is a comprehensive four-year program that helps students and families plan for academic success and college enrollment. While grade level counselors assist students with their academic plan, one of the college counselors begins working with students during their junior year. College visits, applications, essays, transcripts, recommendations, scholarships and financial aid are all topics addressed through individual meetings and college night presentations. Beginning in junior year, families have access to Naviance, a web-based college resource with information on colleges, careers and scholarships. In addition to giving students information about schools, Naviance provides information on where St. John’s students have applied and been admitted in the past, allowing students to gauge the success rate of previous St. John’s seniors.

The St. John’s Network of Alumni

ASSISTANCE

From day one, when a student chooses to attend St. John’s, they become part of something bigger – the St. John’s community, including more than 11,000 active alumni. St. John’s alumni are loyal, successful and generous in giving back to their alma mater and its current students. Their generosity allows us to provide the best possible Catholic education in the Lasallian tradition to each student. Our alumni serve as stewards of the school, a commitment that stems from their own experiences of friendship and camaraderie during their time at St. John’s.

Scholarships and Tuition Assistance Academic, fine arts, instrumental and vocal music scholarships are available. Please see the application for details regarding qualifications, requirements and auditions. St. John’s also offers need-based tuition assistance to families who apply and are qualified.

Upon graduation, our students officially join this network of alumni and know they will always have the support of the St. John’s community, in college and in their professional careers.

Brand New

STATE- OF- THE- ART FACILITIES In the spring of 2015, St. John’s began two campus construction projects: the renovation and expansion of our fine arts studios and the construction of our new performing arts wing. In late 2016, we will begin work on our new student center, including a Lasallian Center for Mission and Ministry. These projects are the first steps in the execution of St. John’s campus master plan. We are investing in our students with these much-needed upgrades to and support for our performing and fine arts programs and our studentcentered mission and ministry work.

THE DONATELLI ARTS CENTER

Our two fine arts studios were renovated and upgraded to create a space that better accommodates large projects and creative thinking. We are also expanding the adjacent outdoor patio to give our students the opportunity to work outdoors. This project was completed in the fall of 2015. Our new 15,000-square-foot performing arts wing will provide additional classroom space, including three performance classrooms outfitted with exceptional acoustic design, individual practice rooms, elevator access and enough storage space among the new rooms to accommodate a dozen bands and hundreds of instruments. The new performing arts wing will open in 2016.

FITZPATRICK LIBRARY

In spring 2016, St. John’s will begin construction on a new student center. This space will host the Lasallian Center for Mission and Ministry and a new theater complex outfitted with a director’s office, dressing rooms, bathrooms, a green room, additional storage for props and costumes and a black box theater – a small, flexible space that can be easily rearranged to perform intimate plays, run in-depth rehearsals or hold special events such as recitals, lectures or small concerts. The student center will also feature a glassenclosed student walk with casual seating that links the center to St. John’s current facilities and connects to an outdoor patio in the new Gletner Courtyard.
