From JELANI JEFFERSON EXUM

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Excellence

Prominence

Impact

Those three words form a tripartite theme that has organized my listening and learning about St. John’s Law since I started as dean in June. It’s a theme that centers on tradition, while also looking forward. It recognizes the Law School’s longtime strengths and embraces innovation that helps our community thrive in a fast-changing profession and world.

Our excellence is on display in the foundational and elective courses that equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need to stand out in our competitive field. Beyond the classroom, students learn the law through academic centers, in-house and partner clinics, and advocacy programs that set St. John’s Law apart and showcase our prominence.

In every way, St. John’s Law is a school of tremendous impact. Since our founding almost a century ago, the Law School has transformed lives by opening the legal profession’s doors to a diverse student body that includes many first-generation college and law students. Guided by St. John’s Vincentian mission, we educate lawyers who uplift the profession while making their mark as advocates, judges, business leaders, and entrepreneurs.

Listening and learning over the past several months, and meeting many of you at events and gatherings, it’s clear that our alumni and friends are the hub and heart of the Law School’s excellence, prominence, and impact. The generosity chronicled in this Report of Gifts anchors the learning, programs, scholarships, and fellowships that allow our students and our institution to achieve and rise.

St. John’s Law stands on a strong foundation today because of you, our worldwide community. I look forward to working and celebrating with you as dean, and to seeing how your ongoing support carries the Law School into its next century of excellence, prominence, and impact.

Thank you for all you do!

SHEro Challenge and Summer Public Interest Fellowships

To support this year’s superherothemed Public Interest Auction, Rose DiMartino ’81 issued a challenge. She would match every $3,000 gift made by a member of the St. John’s Law Alumni Association Alumnae Leadership Council Chapter, which is open to all Law School alumnae. The funds raised from the SHEro Challenge would benefit the Law School’s Summer Public Interest Fellowship Program.

With the success of DiMartino’s Challenge, the Auction, and other fundraising initiatives coordinated by our Public Interest Center, 81 St. John’s Law students were named 2024 Summer Public Interest Fellows and received a stipend of $6,000 for otherwise unpaid, full-time work in public interest and public service jobs.

The Summer Public Interest Fellowship offered Peja Breuler critical financial support. “Since I began my legal education at St. John’s, I’ve been drawn to public interest work and initiatives,” he says. “When

I found out I was selected for a summer internship with Hon. Mark W. Pedersen, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Western District of New York, I knew the experience would be life changing. I couldn’t wait to learn the law hands on, and enhance my writing, advocacy, and research skills. But I couldn’t afford to take an unpaid job without working part time to cover expenses. So, when I learned I received a Fellowship through the SHEro Challenge, I was incredibly grateful.”

One of the generous SHEroes, May Mansour, was happy to give back in this meaningful way. “Law school is already stressful, and it becomes more complicated when a student worries about how they will pay for their education,” she shares. “I was thrilled to hear that my contribution to the SHEro Challenge made Peja’s life a little easier and helped give him the unrivaled opportunity to learn the law as a judicial intern this past summer.”

ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR LAW SCHOOL ADVANCEMENT

Dear Friends,

Standing at the back of the Law School cafeteria in April, watching numbered paddles rise and vie at the annual Public Interest Auction, I felt such a sense of pride. Behind those bids, and the items and experiences enticing them, were many St. John’s Law alumni and friends.

While it never surprises me, I’m continually moved and inspired by the generosity of our supporters. Coming together at the Auction and around other efforts, you helped to raise $468,838 to fund the Law School’s 2024 Summer Public Interest Fellowship Program.

Receiving a $6,000 stipend from St. John’s Law, each of our 81 Summer Public Interest Fellows built practical knowledge and skills as they provided legal assistance to traditionally underserved clients, groups, and interests in nonprofit and governmental practice settings. It was the first time in the Fellowship Program’s history that we were able to meet the full demand for support and fund every eligible applicant.

The Program’s funding included proceeds from the SHEro Challenge led by Rose DiMartino ’81, who matched Challenge gifts of $3,000 (half a Fellowship stipend). Rose issued the Challenge to the Alumni Association Alumnae Leadership Council Chapter that she helped to found, and the response was enthusiastic.

That’s just one example of the generosity highlighted in this Report of Gifts. Each donation helped to make Fiscal Year 2024 our secondhighest giving year on record. We added $5.3 million in funds to support the fellowships, scholarships, programs, and initiatives that attract top talent to St. John’s Law, where this year’s 1L class arrived with the highest median undergraduate GPA ever.

Thank you for making the gifts that ensure alma mater’s continued excellence, and for giving your time and talents as influential employers and mentors to our students. I look forward to partnering with you as we welcome Dean Jelani Jefferson Exum’s first year of leadership, prepare to celebrate 100 years of St. John’s Law, and envision our next century of impact.

Best,

Hon. Joanna Seybert ’71 Scholarship

“I’ve been blessed with the gift of more than 30 years on the federal bench, and that’s in part due to my education from St. John’s Law,” says Hon. Joanna Seybert, U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of New York.

In those three decades, Judge Seybert has shared that gift by hiring St. John’s Law students as interns, and alumni as clerks, in her chambers. “I’ve found St. John’s Law students and graduates to be intelligent, practical, openminded, and mature,” she says. “Many of my clerks go on to work in Big Law, and I’m confident that they take with them the knowledge of how to treat the parties and their counsel with respect and patience.”

Today, Judge Seybert still makes a lasting impact on the St. John’s Law community, serving as a role model for female students and graduates. As one of only three female students in her section at St. John’s Law, she forged the way, empowering generations of female lawyers to follow in her footsteps.

Julia Remick, a judicial summer intern in Judge Seybert’s chambers, is one of the students who has been impacted by the Judge’s generosity. “By observing Judge Seybert on the bench, I’ve learned the importance of understanding all aspects of an issue,” she says. “The Judge emphasizes that my generation is the future of the legal profession

and, based on her insight, I’ll continue to be curious and open to new perspectives. As a first-generation law student, I’ve appreciated the mentorship of the Judge and her clerks, who have provided guidance as I navigate decisions surrounding my future career. I’m grateful for the opportunity to begin my legal career in public service, and my experiences will inform my professional decisions in the years to come.”

Brett Cooper, one of Judge Seybert’s former law clerks, was so moved by the Judge’s ongoing generosity that he, along with 17 other former clerks, established the Hon. Joanna Seybert ’71 Scholarship at St. John’s Law. “I thought it was a fitting tribute to show how much we appreciate everything she has done for the Law School and, of course, for her clerks,” he says. “It took just minutes to gather the support of her former law clerks to establish the scholarship. Our hope is that the scholarship encompasses Judge Seybert’s lasting, positive impact on St. John’s Law for future generations.”

Judge Seybert isn’t done giving back to the St. John’s Law community. “Becoming a judge was truly a dream come true,” she shares. “My career has focused on serving the greater good, and I continue to support the Law School because it provides me with high-quality, personable interns and law clerks who have the same goal of bettering the community.”

Inspiring Future

John V. Brennan ’63C, ’66L, ’93HON

The late John V. Brennan was an esteemed alumnus and consummate lawyer who animated the Vincentian mission of serving the greater good in all aspects of his life.

After earning his J.D. from St. John’s Law, Brennan rose through the ranks at United States Aviation Underwriters, the world’s largest aviation insurer. Working with a focus on products liability, he eventually became the company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, a position he held until his retirement in 1994.

Outside his professional pursuits, Brennan served and supported New York’s Catholic community generously. With his family, he helped to establish The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network)

on Long Island. Back home at St. John’s, he was the primary benefactor in building the St. Thomas More Church and was also a significant contributor to the creation of Carnesecca Arena.

Brennan’s generosity also extended to St. John’s Law, where he made a major gift that established the Brennan Family Scholarship Matching Program. Giving rise to over 75 new scholarships, for a total increase of over $10 million in endowed scholarship funding, the initiative attracted many first-time donors and was a catalyst for doubling annual fundraising.

A number of the endowed scholarships listed in this Report of Gifts are directly attributable to the Brennan Match, including the: Chun Family Scholarship; Fannell Family Scholarship; GarciaHasluck ’85 Family Scholarship; Therese M. Haberle ’77L and Ernest J. Haberle ’33C, ’36L Scholarship; and Virginia and Helen Ramsay Law Scholarship. The scholarship support Brennan inspired now totals 20% of the Law School’s endowment and will only grow as alumni who benefitted from the Matching Program pay it forward with their own generous gifts to alma mater .

Reflecting on his father’s contributions to the Law School, Brennan’s son, John O. Brennan ’90, once said: “St. John’s Law is in my family’s DNA.” With the Brennan Family Scholarship Matching Program, that family tree has grown to include generations of alumni who, with gratitude, are following the example that Brennan set to benefit our students and the entire St. John’s Law community as we move into our second century of excellence.

Generations

Joseph M. Mattone, Sr. ’53C, ’55L, ’94HON

Joseph M. Mattone, Sr., who passed away this year, had a wonderfully quintessential St. John’s Law story. With a deep and abiding respect for the sacrifices of his Italian immigrant family, he employed a strong work ethic, New York City street smarts, and keen business acumen to rise to the heights of local and national real estate development.

As Mattone built successful businesses in real estate, investments, and the law, he remained a dedicated St. John’s alumnus. He was the first member of the Founders Society at St. John’s University, where he also served as a founding member of the Board of Governors and, later, as a member of the Board of Trustees and as trustee emeritus.

Continuing that proud tradition of supporting alma mater , Mattone was a major contributor to the building of St. Thomas More Church on campus, was the benefactor of the Mattone Family Atrium at St. John’s Law, and made a transformational gift to the Law School to establish the Mattone Family Institute for Real Estate Law.

Since its start, overseeing the Law School’s dynamic real estate program, the Mattone Institute has helped prepare hundreds of aspiring attorneys for success in the field. Beyond providing financial support for its programming, Mattone was instrumental in composing the Institute’s Advisory Board, a diverse group of alumni in real estate who helped to frame the Institute’s mission and who continue to guide it.

Current Advisory Board members include: Maria Castiglie ’15, Counsel, JP Morgan Asset Management; Benjamin Clack ’15, Real Estate Counsel, Curaleaf; Matthew Donoghue ’12, Counsel, Greenberg Traurig; Max Patinkin ’13, Principal, High Tide Capital LLC;

Stephanie Rainaud ’14, Associate, Holland & Knight LLP; Juan Restrepo ’07, Co-Managing Partner, Richter Restrepo PLLC; Michael J. Rhee ’98, Senior VP and General Counsel, The Durst Organization; Corey Trail ’17, Senior Staff Attorney, Con Edison; and Nicole Woolard ’09, General Counsel and Senior Vice President, Barr & Barr Inc.

Together with their fellow Advisory Board members, they share insights and expertise from the field to benefit the Mattone Institute and the St. John’s Law students who will excel as the next generation of real estate lawyers and leaders. It’s a proud and enduring legacy for Joe Mattone that will inspire alumni generosity for many years to come.

Hon. Charles B. Rangel speaks at the BLSA 50th Anniversary Celebration in May 2024

HON. CHARLES B. RANGEL ’60, ’83HON AND SHANIA VINCENT ’24

Hon. Charles B. Rangel ’60, ’83HON Scholarship

When then-aspiring lawyer Charles Rangel made the commute from Harlem to the St. John’s Law campus on his first day of law school, he didn’t know he was taking the first steps toward a career path in public service, becoming one of the longestserving members of the U.S. House of Representatives, co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, and the first African American chair of the House Ways and Means Committee.

“The ability to go to law school with people who understood hard work influenced my studies, and it certainly influenced my career as I worked with people from different backgrounds,” Congressman Rangel recalls. Having returned from serving in the Korean War, he witnessed diversity of thought at St. John’s, which emphasized the importance of ongoing public service. “I was amazed at the number of students who went into public service careers after graduation,” he shares.

After a long career representing his constituents, the Congressman now reflects on the friends and mentors who have guided and supported him along the way.

“I’ve received support from so many,” he says. “As the kid who dropped out of high school, got the Purple Heart, and was trying to get a good law school education, I consistently reflect on how good and generous people have been over the years. I had people that believed in me, and who wanted to see me succeed. Now, I feel an obligation to open doors for today’s students. Education is key to upward advancement, and now more than ever, it allows us the opportunity to make better decisions, not only for ourselves, but for future generations.”

Shania Vincent has experienced Congressman Rangel’s generosity.

“The support I received from the Hon. Charles B. Rangel ‘60, ‘83HON Scholarship has meant the world,” she says. “I wouldn’t have experienced the success I had in law school without it. Because of the Scholarship, I filled my time with studying and unpaid internships that helped advance my educational goals. Now, I hope to pay forward the support I received and alleviate financial burden from a future law student.”

Shania Vincent

BLSA 50th Anniversary Celebration

On a beautiful May evening, the St. John’s Black Law Students Association (BLSA) hosted a special event celebrating 50 years of BLSA at St. John’s Law. The milestone anniversary brought together generations of BLSA alumni, including past presidents and pioneers of the organization. BLSA also honored Dorothy Moran, the Law School’s former Associate Director of Admissions, for her immense contributions to the community.

Jasmine Brown, a member of the event’s Host Committee, was compelled to support BLSA and the Law School’s Diversity Fund thanks to her experience as a student. “During my first days at St. John’s Law, I attended a BLSA meeting where I felt welcomed and encouraged by the 2L and 3L members,” she shares. “I developed a close bond with many of the 1L members and ran for a position on the Executive Board at the end of the year. Eventually, I went on to hold a national BLSA leadership position, and my involvement in the organization has shaped who I am today.”

Being part of BLSA was also a formative experience for Samantha Ojo. “It’s important that the Law School accurately reflects the diversity of the world around us,” she says as an avid supporter of the BLSA 50th Anniversary Celebration. “BLSA shaped the course of my law school journey and continues to impact my career as a practicing attorney. I support the Diversity Fund because I want to ensure that all Black students can experience the close-knit BLSA community during their time at St. John’s Law.”

At the Celebration, Dean Jelani Jefferson Exum gave a toast, saying, “As we celebrate the past, let’s also use this occasion as inspiration for a renewed commitment to our future. Cheers to the next 50 years of growth, community, and success!”

Looking back at the history of BLSA and looking ahead at the student organization’s bright future, Brown shares, “This event was a true reflection of the St. John’s Law family.”
