HEAD OF SCHOOL WELCOME St. John’s Episcopal School Community, When my family and I moved out to California this summer for this incredible job opportunity, we knew that St. John’s was a special place. Over the course of the preceding months, we had visited the School to meet with students and faculty, attended Cardinella, and continued to learn more about the school. Since our arrival, the School and community have been everything that we’d hoped for and so much more. But, we’re not special. I’ve noticed that every student and every member of this school community receives an unparalleled level of dedication, support, and appropriate challenge. New families receive a personalized approach from our admissions office and are paired with “buddy families” to support their transition to the School. Faculty and staff are encouraged and supported to continue to hone their craft, with the goal of engaging every student in the classroom to be his or her best self. And, every student, parent, and alumnus of the School is treated like family—known as an individual, with ample opportunities to contribute to the well-being of the whole. Indeed, the strength of St. John’s is most apparent when everyone is all-in, with a shared understanding of our mission and priorities, as well as our responsibility to each student’s personal growth. Being all-in means more than just showing up. Being all-in requires communication, follow-through, shared values, and lofty goals. Community engagement can be measured through volunteerism, philanthropic giving, attendance and participation in school events, and so much more. St. John’s has the capacity to be a school where 100% of students, families, faculty, staff, and alumni are pulling in the same direction, together. So, this is my invitation to each member of the entire St. John’s community: Join us and be all-in with St. John’s. Come to school activities, volunteer for events, and read school communications. Support the Cardinal Fund, the Making Space for the Future Campaign, and events like Cardinella and the Golf Tournament. Recommend the school to a prospective family. And, be sure to stop by and chat with me anytime—I want to hear from you! Together, we’ll chart a course toward a bright future for every St. John’s student, today and for generations to come. Sincerely,
Patrick McHonett Head of School

SCHOOL COMMITTEE UPDATE Dear St. John’s Community, In my welcome letter in September, I was able to highlight the work of so many in developing and executing our strategic vision for the school. I would encourage you to spend a few moments on the School’s website reviewing progress against our 2016 Strategic Plan as well our goals leading into the future. All of this is entirely made possible by the effort and financial contributions of our parents and the broader community. Each year, the St. John’s School Committee works to establish a comprehensive and forward-looking budget which guides the School’s tuition and philanthropic resources, providing maximum benefit to our students. Your donation to the Cardinal Fund, as well as participation in long-term campaigns and fundraising events, enables St. John’s to build on a 30-year foundation of excellence. Philanthropy is critical, as it impacts every aspect of this School, from retention and development of our faculty and staff, to strengthening our academic and co-curricular programs, to maintenance of our beautiful campus environment. As one of Orange County’s premier independent schools, we count on and remain grateful for your continued support of St. John’s. I would also encourage you to join our State of the School event on January 16, 2020 to learn more about our strategic and financial priorities, as well as the return on your investment into the School. Sincerely,
Bill Hageman School Committee Chair

STRATEGIC PLAN Like all great schools, St. John’s Episcopal School is guided by a forward-looking Strategic Plan. Guided by the leadership of the School Committee, with input from key school constituencies, the Strategic Plan contains long-term strategic goals for pillars of success: Episcopal Identity, Curriculum, Co-Curriculum, Admissions, Finance, Advancement, Organizational Development, and Facilities. The Strategic Plan 2019-2021 outlines priorities to be addressed in the coming two years, which will serve as a springboard for a long-term plan, to be released at the end of the 2020-21 school year. St. John’s Episcopal School has a strong present, and a bright future, as guided by the following strategic priorities:
Mission Statement Grounded in the rich history of diversity and excellence in Episcopal education, St. John’s fosters every child’s full intellectual, physical, and spiritual development. A nurturing learning environment and programs built on an ideal balance of tradition and innovation encourage our students to pursue lives of service and purpose.
Vision Statement To provide an extraordinary STEAM education that best prepares our students for a life of leadership, character, and purpose in the 21st century.
Pillars of Success The Strategic Plan 2019-2021 contains our long-term vision and goals for pillars of success:

At the end of every year, St. John’s Episcopal School recognizes our incredibly dedicated faculty and staff. At the 2018-2019 Years of Service Assembly, St. John’s celebrated employees who had reached 5, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years of service milestones.
St. John’s also celebrated the retirement of Dr. Michael Pratt, Head of School, and Georgia Clark, one of the founders of St. John’s and ECC teacher. Both will be greatly missed and their impacts on campus will not soon be forgotten.

PTF UPDATE & VOLUNTEER THANKS BY COREY GONSALVES
I am honored to volunteer as your PTF President, along with an amazing group of parent volunteers, a dedicated PTF Executive Board, and the exceptional faculty and staff at St. John’s. So often, when you hear of the PTF, you think, “volunteer time.” While volunteerism is in part true, the role of the PTF at St. John’s is so much more. Consider the PTF a school-wide group that gathers together to help make memories—not just in the lives of our children, but also due to the friendships we form. The PTF is comprised of all parents, grandparents, extended family members, and friends joining in fellowship to help support and build a strong St. John’s Episcopal School community. As an independent school, St. John’s is free to set its educational, spiritual, and philanthropic goals high. By immersing yourself in volunteer and donor opportunities, you can help create an untouchable learning experience for every St. John’s student. As in years past, we have many traditional opportunities to volunteer to support St. John’s, as well as a few new surprises this year! My hope is that you feel at home and a part of the St. John’s family. Whether you can spare 30-minutes, a couple of hours, or simply can serve as a champion of the school from your own vantage point, your ideas, talents, time, and generosity are all truly needed and appreciated. If you would like to participate in PTF or would like information about volunteer opportunities at the school, please reach out to me at csgonsalves8@gmail.com, or fill out the PTF Volunteer Form found on the Parent Gateway.

THANK YOU TO OUR 2018-2019 TITLE CARDINAL FUND DONORS The Cardinal Fund is the most important annual fundraising priority for the school. Tuition itself does not cover the full cost of a St. John’s education. The Cardinal Fund makes up the difference and every dollar is used in the current year to enhance each student’s everyday experience. Each fall, we ask every family to give to the Cardinal Fund as it supports nearly every aspect of a St. John’s education.

N E W C A M P U S S PA C E S “The new drama classroom gives students the opportunity to rehearse in a professional setting, while still functioning a s a p ro d u c t i v e l e a r n i n g environment. The staging and lights set this space apart and the curriculum can now be designed and implemented in the best way possible.” – Dimitri Garaud, St. John’s Spanish and Drama Teacher
“Leveraging the new technology, I am able to teach a lesson in real-time, demonstrating techniques to all students, rather than just one. The flexible furniture lets students learn and adapt for using different media or collaboration projects. We are able to dive into each lesson deeper and create a greater understanding of key concepts. Students are set up for success while learning in a great creative space.” – Katie Kelly, St. John’s Fine Art Teacher
MAKING SPACE FOR THE FUTURE BY JAMES JORDAN
Over the summer, thanks to the generosity of 105 donors and the parent gift at Cardinella, the Making Space for the Future campaign was able to support the first wave of renovations to classrooms in the Middle Division and enrichment spaces. Designed to fully engage every student in every class, Making Space for the Future is allowing St. John’s to revise the student learning experience, leveraging 21st Century learning skills and prescient research to positively impact outcomes for our students. Students returned to the 2019-20 school year to nine newly remodeled Middle Division classrooms, a completely revamped Drama Room, and the Michael D. Pratt Enrichment Center, featuring flexible, studentcentered learning areas for the visual and performing arts.
Making Space for the Future is creating learning environments that: •
Ensure every child is now sitting “at the front of the class”
•
Engage the range of cognitive, kinesthetic, visual, and social-emotional learners through flexible spaces
•
Facilitate collaboration and inquiry between students and teachers
•
Leverage appropriate technology and individuation for students, as appropriate
•
Align with the tenets of a STEAM-based learning experience
We are eager to continue to evolve our curriculum to best engage our students within these flexible learning spaces, using research-based, best practices with direct results on learning outcomes. Please accept our most sincere thanks for the impact of these gifts on our students’ learning at St. John’s.

YOUR IMPACT ON ADMISSIONS BY PATTY STOECKER AND SEABY RODRIGUEZ
Please mark your calendars for the following St. John’s Episcopal School Admissions Events for 2019-20: Weekly Campus Tours: Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. Breakfast with the Principals: - December 6 - February 7 ECC Story Time: First Thursdays of the month
“How did you hear about St. John’s Episcopal School?” It’s the first question we ask any prospective family as they contact the Admissions Office, seeking to learn more about the school or arrange a tour. Sometimes, the family shares that they liked a recent article about the school, or saw one of our ads in a magazine, but the most common response—YOU! St. John’s current families are the best ambassadors of the School, and our students make an impact on campus and in the surrounding community. Invariably, people want to be a part of what’s happening here. It could be through spreading the word at a local play date, sharing a post on your personal social media, or simply representing the School in your Cardinal spirit wear on the weekends, you spread the word: St. John’s is an amazing community! In addition to the impactful donations, volunteerism, and support St. John’s families provide the School, the Admissions Office also has a robust referral program. Any current family that is listed as a referral on a newly enrolling family’s admissions application will receive a $100 gift card to Hanna’s. Many thanks to the families that were able to refer new families to St. John’s for the 18-19 school year.

“After carefully and thoughtfully considering all options available in Orange County for our son’s education, we chose St. John’s Episcopal School. The School’s combination of passionate and caring teachers, dedicated administrative and support staff, and forward-thinking and highly skilled leadership produced a “Renaissance” experience for our son.
