The Turning of the Year is a time when we celebrate, and what better way than through making music. There’s a wealth of music on offer at St John’s Smith Square over Christmas, into the New Year and all the way through to Easter. If you haven’t already booked for the Christmas Festival, do call the Box Office to secure your tickets as soon as you can. Don’t forget our new show for all the family, Jack Frost’s Christmas Adventure, featuring original music played live on stage and a cast of top singers and actors. If you go to one show over Christmas or New Year then this is a must! Perhaps you’re a fan of the New Year’s Parade in London? Well this year you can round off your trip to the parade with a wonderful concert of traditional new year tunes ‘with a twist’, featuring Elin Manahan Thomas, known to many from her stunning performance at the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympic Games in the summer. There are some fabulous concerts and events to look forward to in the spring. We have two visits from the Ljubljana International Orchestra, playing Haydn, Beethoven and Schumann amongst other works. The London Mozart Players return for two concerts, one of which features screen icon Simon Callow alongside virtuoso conductor/violinist Joseph Swensen whilst in the other Howard Shelley will be both pianist and director in a programme of Weber, Mozart and Brahms. We also welcome back our friends from the London Chamber Orchestra with Christopher Warren-Green when they will be joined by French pianist Pascal Rogé for a programme with a real Gallic flavour, featuring music by Debussy, Ravel and Fauré. The season comes to a close on Good Friday with the highly anticipated annual performance of the St John Passion, given by Polyphony and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under Stephen Layton. We also anticipate Easter with the traditional candlelit Tenebrae concert with Chapelle du Roi and performances of choral favourites; the St Matthew Passion, Mass in B minor and Messiah. Jack’s job is to make sure there’s enough snow and ice for Santa’s sleigh to take off so he can deliver the presents. This year Santa and Jack have had a big row and are refusing to speak to each other. Without Jack there’s no snow – which means no Christmas! TUESDAY 12 MARCH A BIRTHDAY HAPPENING Stephen Montague Birthday Celebrations St John’s Smith Square celebrates the birthday of one of the most iconic and distinctive composers working today. Born in New York state, Montague grew up in the US and studied in Florida and, although now resident in the UK for almost 40 years, his music is truly transatlantic in flavour; full of original character and integrity whilst the spirit of his American forefathers, Ives, Cowell and Cage can also be heard. These concerts will show a little of the diversity of Montague’s music; from his homage to John Cage in the highly theatrical dinner party at lunchtime through the ceremonial grandeur of the Intrada 1631 to the virtuosic minimalism of At the White Edge of Phrygia and culminating with the pathos and power of his large scale, ‘Dark Sun’.

St John’s Smith Square is a wonderful Concert Hall in the heart of the City of Westminster. We are always looking to broaden and develop our programme. As well as being London’s top concert hall for choirs, chamber orchestras and period instrument groups, St John’s Smith Square can provide the perfect location for a whole range of other activities. Smith Square Café and Restaurant offers an innovative and seasonal menu throughout the year, both on the buffet counter and in the restaurant. We are open on weekdays from 10am – 5pm with lunch being served from midday – 2:45pm. On concert nights we are open from 5:30pm for pre-concert suppers and light meals. Post-concert we serve planks of cheese, charcuterie and mezze. We also cater for private events here at St John’s and for external functions. Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Car Parking: St John’s is within the congestion charging zone. Parking meters are in operation during the day Monday-Saturday until 6:30pm. In the evenings and at weekends there is usually ample space locally. There is Westminister City Council car parking on Great College Street and Arneway Street.
