WELCOME TO FRIENDS ST JOHN’S SMITH SQUARE
© Jamie Lumley
As Spring turns to Summer there are some exciting partnerships and developments to look forward to at St John’s. We celebrate the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth with a range of concerts. James Gilchrist and Anna Tilbrook will be giving three recitals of Britten’s songs, paired with music from those who influenced him. Later in the year we will embark on a similar project devoted to Britten’s string chamber music with the Benyounes Quartet and friends. Then, in August St John’s will be transformed for a magical staged production of Britten’s Curlew River with Nova Music Opera. If you came to our Autumn Festival you will remember the captivating concert given by Songsmiths and so we’re very excited to welcome Mary Bevan, Nicky Spence, Marcus Farnsworth and Audrey Hyland on 18 April to continue the Songsmiths journey. If you’re still hungry for more song join us for an evening of sparkling vocal treats on 18 June as we open the American Songbook. As ever there are great choral works to be heard; Handel’s ‘Messiah’, Bach’s ‘Mass in B minor’, the Mozart, Fauré and Duruflé ‘Requiems’ and Rachmaninov’s ‘Vespers’. Alongside choral classics are some of the most popular symphonies in the classical canon; Mozart’s ‘Jupiter’ Symphony, the 7th and 8th Symphonies of Dvořák, Mahler’s 1st and 7th Symphonies, Rachmaninov’s 2nd Symphony, Tchaikovsky’s 4th and Beethoven’s unassailable 5th Symphony played by our friends, the London Mozart Players. The OSJ return with concerts in April and May, and following her enchanting New Year’s concert, Elin Manahan Thomas and David Miller, give a recital of music by Dowland, Purcell and Schubert. The Smith Quartet will be performing a tour de force - the complete String Quartets of Michael Nyman (including the British premiere of the Quartet No.5) in just one day on 1 June. Spring at St John’s would not be the same without the Lufthansa Festival of Baroque Music, and this year with ’Tis Nature’s Voice, we look forward to a world-class festival of music making from 10 to 18 May. Details are included in this brochure and booking is already open – book soon to avoid disappointment! If you have any comments, questions or observations please do contact me on 020 7222 2168 or email richard@sjss.org.uk Richard Heason
