PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME It is a great pleasure to welcome you, following a year’s hiatus, back to St Joseph’s College’s annual National Schools Rugby Festival. It is a privilege to host such a high profile and long-standing event, which is now in its 35th year. Established in 1987, our Festival remains one of the most prestigious schoolboy rugby tournaments in the country, an established date on the calendars and fixture lists of the country’s top rugby-playing schools. In recent years we have been fortunate enough to see some of rugby’s biggest stars grace St Joseph’s pitches. Chris Robshaw, Mako Vinupola, Jonathan Joseph, Christian Wade, Jamie Roberts, Matt Dawson, Mike Tindall, Andy Goode, James Haskell, Tony Diprose and Tom Rees are just some of the players who have stamped their mark on the Festival before going on to international fame. We are also rightly proud of our own success stories including Lewis Ludlam … Ethan Waddleton… and Harri Williams … to name but a few. I would like to thank all of the participating schools for their support, as well as the thousands of spectators both in person and online, including former students, families, staff and friends of the College, who make the Festival atmosphere so special. The College wishes to thank all of the Festival’s sponsors for their very generous support, including our headline sponsor, Ealing
Trailfinders. I am very grateful to the staff at St Joseph’s for their support both in preparation for, during, and post this Festival. In particular, I would like to thank the following staff and their teams - Mrs Lucy Bolton (Head of Marketing & Events), Mr Anthony O’Riordan (Director of Business Development & Sport), Mr Peter Hamilton (Head Groundsperson), Mr Keiron Orris (IT Network Manager), Mr James Mann (Catering Manager), Mr Mark Harris (Head Caretaker) and Mrs Ana Lourenco (Head of Housekeeping). A special mention and thank you to our volunteer public announcer and former member of College staff, Mr Andrew Reavill.
We look forward to what will be a weekend of top calibre rugby and catching up with friends and supporters of St Jo’s both past and present.

FESTIVAL HISTORY
The St Joseph's College National Schools Rugby Festival was started in 1987 to commemorate the College’s Golden Jubilee. In its 35 years, the Festival has seen an abundance of top-quality players grace the turf. Millfield has had a number of star players show off their skills at the Festival, from former England captain Chris Robshaw to Anthony Allen and Mako Vunipola, a British and Irish Lion, no less. Former England full back Olly Morgan won Player of the Tournament award in 2003, while England and Bath star Jonathan Joseph won it in 2008. Having won the tournament six times, it should be no surprise that they have a number of top-level professionals among their old boys. More recently, Millfield has had a number of players breaking through to the edge of their professional 1st XVs: the likes of Tom Ellis at Bath, Callum Sheedy at Bristol, Try of the Tournament winner Tom Whiteley at Bristol, and 2011 Player of the Tournament Max Northcote-Green at Ealing Trailfinders.
Chris Robshaw, Millfield
Brighton College's alumni includes Harlequins’ back row James Chisholm, who was the U20 World Player of the Year in 2014, as well as his Harlequins’ teammate Jordan Turner-Hall. Turner-Hall returned to the tournament as a coach in 2017 following his retirement from professional rugby, bringing Hurstpierpoint College to its first Festival. Ollie Phillips also played at the Festival and went on to play for Newcastle Falcons, Stade Francais and Gloucester, as well as captaining England 7s and being voted World 7s Player of the Year in 2009. More recently, Brighton College’s Kyran Bungaroo (Biarritz and Leicester) and Marcus Smith (Harlequins) have played at the National Schools Rugby Festival before going on to play on the professional stage. RGS High Wycombe has produced a hatful of top players to grace this wonderful tournament. Former Wasps’ winger Christian Wade, who left rugby union for American Football and now plays running back for the Buffalo Bills, played in three tournaments from 2006-2008, winning Try of the Tournament in 2007. Tom Rees was once forecast to captain England before injury cut his Wasps’ career short. More recently, Ross Neal spent a period with Wasps before moving to the Seattle Seawolves, an American Major League Rugby franchise. More tragic was the terrible news of Nick Duncombe’s death at the age of 23. The scrum half had been tipped for greatness, and won Player of the Tournament in 1999. He is not the only scrum half on the RGS Nick Duncombe, RGS production line - England World Cup winner and British and Irish Lions series winner Matt Dawson was also a star for RGS at the Festival. Dulwich College won the De La Salle Cup back in 2011, the school’s first trophy on a remarkable run that saw it win three Schools Cups in a row. Beno Obano, and Tommy O’Flaherty have gone on from that side to have professional honours with Exeter, and the Ospreys respectively. From previous sides, Sam Twomey and Tim Swiel progressed to excellent careers with Harlequins, as did Josh Ibuanokpe, who more recently left the Twickenham Stoop for North London rivals, Saracens. QEGS Wakefield has one of the great records in schools’ rugby, and the players who have passed through its ranks reflect that. Top of the pile is Mike Tindall, the former England centre and World Cup winner. Tindall represented QEGS from 1995-97, and when he left Ben Woods became the talisman, with the
flanker going on to a sterling career at Leicester Tigers. A number of QEGS old boys are currently still actively playing across the top two tiers of English rugby, a testament to its programme. St Joseph’s College has also had a huge number of players go on to professional careers - yet for all, the Festival will remain one of their great rugby experiences. Alex Day, now at Saracens, captained the St Joseph's College side and won Player of the Tournament at the 2010 Festival. The College’s most recent victory in the Festival came in 2013. Joint Players of the Tournament in 2013 were Dan Lewis and Lewis Ludlam. Lewis has of course recently retired from Coventry to Mike Tindall, QEGS join the coaching team at St Joseph’s College, with Lewis Ludlam now captaining Northampton Saints. George Wacokecoke and Karl Wilkins who also both played in the 2013 Festival winning team are currently playing with Newcastle Falcons and Northampton Saints respectively. Other members of the squad include Luke Jeannot of Coventry as well as Ethan Waddleton and Tom Emery who have both been selected as members of the England and Great Britain 7s squad. Ethan Waddleton also represented Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics. Among the other St Joseph’s College players who have had the privilege of running through the guard of honour and onto Pitch 1 at the Festival you’ll also find a number of players who are at the start of their professional careers. Recently retired from Northampton Saints, and also now amongst the coaching staff at St Joseph’s College is Samson Ma’asi, who following a lifesaving kidney transplant in 2019, has had to take the decision to put his health first and step back from the game at the professional level. Emmanuel Iyogun, left us in 2019 to join Northampton Saints and has since been joined by Leroy O’Neil. There have also been a number of players who have seen success outside of the Premiership. Adrian Sandae has become a consistent member of Oyonnax’s Pro D2 squad and scored the fastest ever try in that league in the 2020-21 season. Leaving us in 2018, Marshall Sykes spent a period with Glasgow before signing for Edinburgh last season. More recently, Harri Williams, who Lewis Ludlam, St Joseph’s signed his first contract with Scarlets aged just 15, has transitioned into their senior playing squad having also represented Wales at U20 level over the summer. St Joseph’s College relationship with Ealing Trailfinders and Brunel University has also seen seven players transition into their academy pathway and we’ll be keeping an eye out for how they progress in the coming years. Of course, the Festival has seen different schools come and go; the likes of Colston’s, Sedbergh, Bromsgrove and Stamford have been part of previous sides and have had some tremendous players grace the turf. Perhaps the most notable at the time was Bromsgrove’s Andy Goode, who won Player of the Tournament in 1997 before going on to great success with Leicester Tigers, Saracens, Wasps, Newcastle Falcons, Worcester Warriors and England. James Simpson-Daniel starred for Sedbegh at the turn of the century. There have been others too, including a Colston’s contingent that included the likes of Jordan Crane, Tom Varndell, Lee Mears, and Olly Barkley. At one stage or another, the likes of Wellington College, Oakham, and Campion have all entered, all of course winners of the Schools Cup, and fielded, among others, James Haskell, Tom Croft, and Tony Diprose. The list of players to have played at the Festival is truly astonishing, and this year we can expect another group of young and talented players to take to the field. In another 35 years it might be their names that adorn these pages and grace our television screens as stars of the rugby world.

OBITUARY - Alan George 1948 - 2021 This year’s Rugby Festival will be poorer without the touchline presence of Alan George, who passed away in February after a short illness. ‘AG’ taught sport at St Joseph’s College throughout the 1970s, firstly at Oak Hill (the College’s prep school) and then at the senior school. During this period he elevated all aspects of St Jo’s rugby, coaching a series of highly successful 1st XVs and younger age group teams. His high standards of sportsmanship, allied with a keen sense of humour, were ingrained into his coaching philosophy. Off the pitch, he used his considerable powers of persuasion to improve the College’s fixture lists and put St Jo’s firmly onto the national schools rugby landscape. In this respect, AG’s efforts paved the way for the creation of the Festival in the mid-1980s, an event he regularly enjoyed. Beyond rugby, AG was a talented coach in other sports, notably football, cricket, basketball and volleyball, sports in which he also demonstrated considerable personal expertise. And few will forget his occasional French and History classes! After leaving St Jo’s, AG went on to have a successful career in financial services, moving to Sheffield where he became a driving force and valued coach and mentor in both city and university rugby circles. When considering his legacy, three attributes quickly surface. He liked to talk…and he could really talk! He lived and breathed rugby. And he really cared about helping others to get the best out of themselves. AG will be missed by family, friends and colleagues, and remembered fondly by many former St Jo’s pupils. Let’s raise a Festival pint (or perhaps the glass of his preferred red wine) in his memory.

This year marks the 35th Annual National Schools Rugby Festival. However, this year also marks so much more than that. It sees the positive return and recovery from what has been an unprecedented experience lived by all. The global pandemic has had an impact on every single one of us; not least through the lack of team sport participation. For the first time we, as coaches, had to rethink the way training sessions were delivered to ensure social distancing and the cleansing of equipment between each use. Instead of wearing a school uniform, students embraced the tracksuit and PE kit on a daily basis. For the parents, teachers and students amongst us, I ask you to pause for thought and reflect on how far we have come. Well done to us all! We often teach our students to reframe challenges and look for a positive angle. If you will indulge me for a moment I will ask you to do the same. Let’s look on the similarity between sport and the global pandemic. COVID-19 is the opposition, a disruptive offensive team (albeit bacteria) that sets about to find gaps in the defence. A ‘team’ that when we, as the defence, find ways to stem its attacking threat, ‘finds an edge’ and attacks in a different way. Now please consider the positive effect this challenging opposition has on the defence. As is the case, when presented with a well drilled opposition, we do what every great team does. We pull together in the face of adversity and, the resilience that we as coaches always try to instill in our student athletes, begins to shine through. We look for chinks in the armour, a weak link or an edge to exploit. This year the St Jo’s team is the personification of all that has been said. It is a team united in the face of adversity, united and focused on one goal. The players represent our community at its best. This year’s team more than ever, is not a team of 25, but a team of some 600 people. We are team St Jo’s!

It is a testament to the regard with which rugby is held at College that a school with less than 400 boys can still compete on a national playing circuit. As a result of our school rugby programme and strong links with Gloucester Rugby, there has been much individual success over the years with numerous players gaining national representation with England and Scotland. The likes of Simon Danielli, Nick Abendanon, Ollie Thorley, Jack Clement and Louis Hillman Cooper to name a few. It is the first time in the school’s history that Cheltenham has entered the St Joseph’s festival and we look forward to testing ourselves against some of the best schools in the country. Squad R. Brougton Johnson, O. McGrath, T. Banda, H. Gwilliam, H. Garbutt, C. Cooper, G. Thomas, J. Kimber, F. Hurst, L. Jamous, J. Jones, D. Noble, M. Brown, F. Walker, J. Maguire, D. McLaughlin, C. Payne, J. 13 MILLFIELD SCHOOL SOMERSET Millfield is a renowned independent school founded in 1935 by Boss Meyer. His vision has inspired the breadth of opportunity at Millfield and the opportunity for excellence. Sporting excellence is an integral part of the school ethos, in 2021 this was underlined by the 13 Old Millfieldians represented at the Tokyo Olympics. Including two GB Sevens representatives Ollie Lindsay Hague and Alec Coombes. Millfield’s most recent international rugby player is Callum Sheedy the Bristol Bears and Wales fly half. Current internationals include Adam Hastings (Scotland and former winner at St Joseph’s), Jonathan Joseph and Mako Vunipola (England) and Rhys Ruddock (Ireland). Former internationals include Sir Gareth Edwards and England Captain Chris Robshaw. Millfield offers rugby to all pupils across two terms in both the fifteen a side and seven a side formats.
Squad I. Emmanuel, T. Howlett, I. Davies, O. Wood, S. Curwen, J. Denmark, J. Levenstein, A. Richard, G. Jones, E. Erskine, T. Williams, T. Davies, S. Harris, G. Timmins, E. Baker, E. Nixon (Capt), A. Sultan Edwards, M. Pearce, H. Carson, O. Smith, K. Kamanga-Drybak, A. McKibbin.

Full Internationals date back as far as 1888 when S M J Woods played for England. Other full internationals include Alex King (Wasps) and Jordan Turner-Hall. Ollie Phillips has captained the England 7s team and was named as ‘world sevens player of the year’ in 2010. More recently, over 30 players have signed professional contracts in the last 10 years including the Chisholm brothers and Marcus Smith winning the Premiership with Harlequins last season. There have also been 28 junior international caps including James Chisholm (England 20s) who was captain when England won the Junior World Cup playing at number 8. 16 KING’S SCHOOL WORCESTER King’s has a strong tradition in Rugby since playing its first competitive game in 1873. Supported by the two Junior Schools, King’s St Alban’s and King’s Hawford, most players begin their rugby education from an early age. At the senior school, it is a common sight on a Saturday afternoon for over 200 rugby players to be representing the school at rugby where the school’s strong fixture list offers excellent opportunities for development. King’s has been playing in pink instead of the traditional blue and white hoops as part of a fundraiser for The Winnie Mabaso Foundation and The SKRUM charity. Both charities are important to the King’s Rugby Club following visits on tours to South Africa and Swaziland. On the doorstep of Worcester Warriors, the school has strong links with the club – regularly fielding Academy players across the age groups.

NEW FORMAT, SAME INCREDIBLE EVENT!! Following feedback from the RFU regarding the format of the competition and its concerns surrounding the physical demand placed on some participating players, we have worked closely with them to ensure a format that we believe not only meets new regulations regarding ‘minutes played’ that will come into effect for next season, but will also continue to provide an exciting and competitive event for all teams involved.
Previous Format Day 1 4 seeded pools of 4 teams 3 x games (15 minutes e/w) = 90 minutes available Day 2 The 1st and 2nd place teams from each of the 4 pools will enter the Trophy Competition The 3rd and 4th place teams from each of the 4 pools will enter the Plate Competition 3 x games (12.5 minutes e/w) = 75 minutes available 2 x finals (12.5 minutes e/w) = possible additional 25 minutes (Maximum available minutes range: 165 – 190)
New Format Day 1 4 seeded pools of 4 teams 3 x games (12.5 minutes e/w) = 75 minutes available Day 2 3 x games (10 minutes e/w) = 60 minutes available The 1st and 2nd place teams from each of the 4 Day 1 pools will enter the Trophy Competition The 3rd and 4th place teams from each of the 4 Day 1 pools will enter the Bowl Competition The first game of Day 2 will act as the quarter final stage. Following this, the tournament will remain a knockout competition, with Plate and Shield Competitions emerging from the Trophy and Bowl Competitions respectively. This will result in a total of 3 x 10 minutes e/w fixtures for each team on Day 2 which will include 3rd and 4th place finals. (Maximum available minutes: 135)
The proposed format means that even teams that do not take advantage of a full 25 man squad (but that bring at least 23 players) will still be able to manage players’ minutes to ensure that all players play no more than 90 minutes across the weekend.

Replacements may be used in a 'rolling' fashion, with no limit on how many substitutions may be made in any given game. We would like to highlight that there is an expectation that teams participating in this festival adhere to the ‘Half Game Policy’', with players all gaining a minimum of 67.5 minutes across the weekend. Should a team be forced to go to uncontested scrums during a match at any time within the tournament, they will have to reduce to 14 players for the remainder of that match. This will be done by removing a backline player from the field of play. That is, the scrum on both sides will still remain an uncontested eight-man scrum. If a team must go uncontested from the start of a match, the above will apply for the whole duration of that game. Any player receiving a Yellow card will be temporarily sent off for four minutes in the 25 minute games and three minutes in the 20 minute games. Any player receiving a Red card will not be allowed to take any further part in the competition. Any such incidents will be reported back to the pupil's Head Teacher for review of whether further sanction is appropriate. The team may start the next game in the tournament with a full complement of players. Each school will advise the organisers of their colours at the time of entry. Schools will be required to certify that all nominated players are full time students attending the school for which they are nominated. The age group definition for the Tournament is inline with the RFU “Age Grades and Applicable Variations”, under the age group ruling that all players must be under 18. Please note that following feedback, there will be a return to the strict U18 categorisation of this festival and as such all players should have been born on or after 1st September 2003. It is the
It is the responsibility of each school to ascertain their playing commitments throughout the tournament, and to be present at the pitch where they are due to play ten minutes before the advertised kick off time. Failure to observe this rule could result in forfeiture of the match.
