St Joseph’s College has a proud tradition of scientific excellence.
OVERVIEW
The Science Block, built in 1988 to mark the College’s Golden Jubilee, was a best-in-class facility at the time.
However, after 36 years with no major investment, the facilities are outdated and no longer meet modern educational and safety standards.
To maintain our reputation and attract top students, we must act now.
Indicative cost for build c£350-400,000.00
THE PROBLEM
Lack of Investment: No significant refurbishments since 1988.
Student Attrition: A-Level science students are leaving for betterequipped competitors. Triple Science students choosing alternative institutions (52% left in 2023).
Outdated Infrastructure: Air extraction systems are inadequate for ALevel Chemistry. Broken flooring, worn-out carpets, dim lighting, and ageing equipment.
Ageing Facilities Impacting Science Education.
The Opportunity
Investing in Science for Growth
OPPORTUNITY 1
Science plays a critical role in attracting and retaining students
OPPORTUNITY 2
International boarders comprise 41% of Year 12 and 45% of Year 13.
OPPORTUNITY 3
A new Science Block will reaffirm St Joseph’s College’s reputation as a centre of excellence in sports and STEM education.
THE INVESTMENT PLAN
3-Year Refurbishment Programme (see Appendix 1)
YEAR 1: CHEMISTRY LABS
Rooms 301, 302 (prep), and 303 rebuilt as specialist Chemistry labs.
Installation of fume cupboards, ventilation, and modern safety systems.
Funding: College’s Capex.
YEAR 2: BIOLOGY LABS & SEMINAR SPACE
Rooms 307, 308 (prep), and 309 rebuilt as Biology labs.
Room 312 converted into an enclosed seminarstyle teaching room.
Funding: Capex + fundraising.
YEAR 3: PHYSICS LABS & EXPANSION
Rooms 304, 305 (prep), and 306 modernised for Physics, including blackouts for optics experiments.
Expansion Consideration: Extending the building towards the cricket nets for additional teaching spaces.
Funding: Capex + fundraising.
The Vision Future-Proofing St Joseph’s Science Education
Beyond the refurbishment:
Expansion into Sport Science & Biomechanics labs. Creation of an Ecology teaching space – a high-impact, low-cost addition.
Outcome: A state-of-the-art Science Block that inspires and equips future scientists.
Positioning St Joseph’s College as a leader in STEM education.
THE FINANCIAL CASE – RETURN ON INVESTMENT
Investment vs. Retention:
Modern facilities will reduce student attrition and attract new Sixth Form students.
Increasing retention by just 10 students per year generates £800,000 over two years.
Long-term Revenue Growth:
Enhanced facilities will drive a higher proportion of international and domestic boarders. Competitive Edge:
Standing out among local and national competitors as a toptier science institution.
