From Magnolias to seashell chic

As outdoor weddings become more popular in our beloved South, many brides choose to blend the natural motifs of Mississippi into their wedding attire. From the creamy Magnolia blossom to the mossdraped Live Oaks that stand sentinel in the landscapes of the South, the natural beauty that surrounds the Southern bride can sway her in her selection of bridal jewelry. The Southern bride, who has traditionally embraced the glitz and shimmer of jewelry materials such as crystal and rhinestone, has recently become more open to the sometimes matte patina of more rustic bridal accessories. These pieces often reflect the deep roots of her home and the spirit

of living in close contact with natural surroundings. The surge of interest in outdoor weddings with a beachside, tropical, garden party or country glam theme has contributed to a growing trend in getting back to nature in bridal accessories as well. And from all appearances, the lush, haltingly beautiful Southern landscape is here to stay. The themes that are drawn from below the Mason-Dixon line are virtually endless.

Stunning focal necklaces of Mother of Pearl, coral and other organic items that accent the coastal landscape have always been fair game for bridal accessories. Although many associate the use of shells in bridal jewelry with a Caribbean or Hawaiian themed wedding, modern takes on this long-standing favorite transition beach themed bridal jewelry away from the kitsch of our grandmothers and into a modern rustic glamour. Wedding jewelry designer Deb Lonergan of Savannah, Ga., creates bridal necklaces festooned with rose gold vermeil versions of her favorite flowers. “The basic interest of a Southern bride in a nature theme, or of having natural elements in her theme, is due to the fact that they have much more of a connection to place,” Lonergan said. “Southerners identify so strongly with being Southern … and want to celebrate it.” Jennifer Hallsey, a jewelry designer with Lee Ohio in Ocean Mississippi

patinas that impart a more rustic vibe. Often, her work is titled with the scientific names of the Southern flora and fauna that inspire her designs, such as “Hydra” (jellyfish), “Callistemon” (Bottlebrush tree), or “Patellidae” (limpets). “The ancient, sweeping live oaks swaying with Spanish moss are enough to make a Northern girl swoon,” said Hallsey, who has an art background and has studied botanical illustration. “The Bottlebrush tree in my front yard and barnacles I’ve discovered at the Biloxi marina are two specific examples of inspiration found here. My pieces will always have that look of a by-gone era … but many of my colors, thoughts and inspirations come from right here on the Gulf.” The best way to achieve the “Southern rustic” look is to focus on accessories that are still formal in terms of design, but that are made with materials that are traditionally associated with country-style or primitive jewelry, such as copper, brass, oxidized silver or pewter. Even different types of textiles such as felted wool, muslin, quilting fabric or even pearl strung hemp have been spotted on brides walking Southern “runways” (aka church aisles). Once you have chosen your material, then it is an easy task to use this material to re-interpret a recognizable organic theme from the South. A good example of the natural Southern style is the work of motherdaughter team Kay Bonnell and Wendy Edwards of Orange Beach, Ala. From their waterfront studio, this duo creates fine examples of copper jewelry that would work well for a Southern wedding. Their work is inspired by the beach motifs found in their local coastal landscape. Styles such as copper-wrapped white freshwater pearls with starfish adornments are perfect for the bride wearing pure white for her special day. A Southern nature theme does not necessarily need to scream “country.” While country-style weddings are quite popular, the wildflower meadow style bouquets and giant sunflowers are not for everyone. A Southern rustic theme can still relay a modern sensibility. The balance found in nature-inspired Southern glam is comparable to the interesting balance often found in “shabby chic” accessories. Shabby chic accessories are often a bit aged, a bit rustic, but with a light, fresh and upscale appeal. Similarly, Southern nature-inspired accessories can be worn well by the discerning bride who wants her most important day to remain an essentially formal affair. Sometimes, a bit of pearl here and there, mixed with casual materials and a Southern-inspired theme, can result in a decidedly unique accessory that pays tribute to a rural deep South, yet lends it a touch of elTOP: Willow in Wind pendant. egance. Shanna Bankston Hanner, accessories designer from Baton Rouge, La., is no stranger to such bridal design. Bankston Hanner makes handcrafted bib necklaces, hair accessories and headbands that often use fabrics combined with light pearl accents. According to Bankston Hanner, who designs for approximately five to ten brides per month, the trend toward Southern nature themes in jewelry and accessories is picking up steam. “Magnolias are a big inspiration. They remind me of my parents’ house in South Louisiana. I also love to do nautical-themed pieces with seersucker and burlap.” Many who cater to the bridal industry in the South agree that natural elements are not just influencing jewelry, but are increasingly being seen across the board in many other aspects of wedding planning. From photography backdrops to outdoor receptions to bouquets with local motifs such as seashells or pinecones, the natural elements are seeping into every nook and cranny. When local vegetation or wildlife inspires the décor of a Southern wedding, the bride is comforted. This trend very much explains the popularity of Bankston Hanner’s floral fabric jewelry. “I think the shabby/rustic trend speaks to the whimsical and creative side of a lot of people. I saw a Southern wedding featured in a blog that used hay bales as seating. They were draped with white cloth and placed in rows. It was genius, and so adorable. And I also love the cowboy boots under the wedding gown trend. People are breaking free from the stuffy, traditional weddings our parents had and doing their own unique thing.” However, not everyone agrees with the rustic aesthetic. For every bride that is open to naturalistic design, there are many more who remain reluctant to even consider anything less than the pearls, crystal or rhinestones of their wildest dreams. Although she decided on a fabric flower for her hair, May bride Andra Harris of Lucedale, said recent trends never entered her thoughts when selecting her jewelry. “I never really had to think about jewelry at all,” she said. “I have always loved pearls … I didn’t decide against rustic or nature themed jewelry for any reason. It just never even entered my mind.” Although many traditional brides in the South still agree with Andra, the southern bride now has more choice in her jewelry than she had in the past. And choice, when it comes to weddings, is always a good thing.

a tale of two weddings Two sisters... two weddings... two months... ONE COORDINATOR by kendall poole

Planning a dream wedding is a joy... but having the opportunity to plan two dream weddings, two months apart, for two sisters with vastly different styles, is inexpressible! As luck would have it, both Laura and Charlotte have wonderful tastes, albeit entirely different expressions for their preferences. Laura leaned toward “Southern Romantic” for her special day, while Charlotte desired the picture of “Bohemian Chic.” The photographs couldn’t have captured their dreams more perfectly. After a short visit with Laura we had picked a lovely color pallet of lavender, silver and ivory and from there the planning began for their May 28 wedding. With the ceremony booked at St. Andrews Cathedral and reception picked for River Hills Club of Jackson we started finalizing vendors. We quickly booked Wendy Putt of Fresh Cut Catering & Floral, Christina Cannon of Photography by Christina, The Cake Diva and the Almost Famous band from Memphis. Wendy created stunning floral arrangements that had guests in awe from the moment they entered River Hills Club. The back patio of was transformed with a 100-foot tent and was lined with crystal chandeliers from Great Southern Events. Davaine

Lighting created the perfect purple color including a monogram gobo as guests entered into the tent. Laura and Will are avid pet lovers so as a gift to their guests we had dog treats instead of the ever-so-popular candy bar. It was a hit! The Grooms cake was a work of art. As Ole miss graduates and big Rebel fans (sorry Bears!), the Cake Diva created a Grove setting with the cake disguised as a cooler and sugar figures of Colonel Reb, a bottle of Jack Daniels and glass of Bloody Mary cocktail sitting on top. It was a surprise to the groom, so when we took him to see it he was blown away! With quick responses via text from vendors about availability and meeting times, mother-of-the-brides

Deb Skelton realized even more just how valuable a wedding coordinator really can be. Wendy Putt was quickly booked and Charlotte and Jeremy decided on The South as their reception venue for their July 23 wedding celebration. Charlotte chose Robby Followell of Followell Fotography to capture her wedding weekend. Davaine Lighting again was instrumental in capturing the yellow and grey color scheme. Charlotte’s wedding gown was a beautiful Monique Lhullier featuring wired swirls of flowers that the Cake Diva recreated on the brides cake design. The finishing touch was the beautiful rosette ivory linen from Eventful Rentals that brought the whole look together. Charlotte chose an all-white candy bar and we added a few special touches including cupcakes from the

Mo Money Band provided the music as family and friends danced the night away. Throughout the planning process in meetings and overlapping vendors it was really important to me that when talking to Laura we stayed focused on Laura & Will’s wedding and the same for when Charlotte and I were meeting. I wanted to be sure it was about each specific bride. Both brides had a completely different vision for their day, but as sisters I knew it was imperative they each get their time in the spotlight. Laura’s Wedding The Proposal “In Los Angeles, while we were on vacation, he proposed in the hotel room after breakfast. Then he took me to a beach party in Malibu.” Their Story “The wedding was held in a beautiful old church, the church where I grew up and where my parents and sister were also married,” said Laura, who wore a Vera Wang gown of ivory satin-faced organza. “The pews and altar were adorned with all white flowers. The groomsmen wore black tuxes, and the bridesmaids wore strapless, floor-length lavender chiffon dresses. They wore custom-made pearl and silver earrings made by me. A turquoise antique car took Will and Laura to their River Hills reception which boasted a Southern Romantic theme with arrangements of all white flowers on each table. “Our favorite foods were provided; shrimp cocktail, fried chicken and catfish, beef tenderloin, to name a few. I had my dream cake designed by the Cake Diva, an all-white, five-tiered cake with a different flavor on each tier and adorned with lavender rose petals. The groom’s cake was an Ole Miss themed cake with items from The Grove inside. Outside, there was a big tent with lavender lighting. There were white leather couches and arrangements of purple flowers on the tables. A light-up bar and customized monogrammed lighting were the “talk of the tent.” The band, Almost Famous of Memphis, provided the reception music. “They were phenomenal!” Laura said. “And one of the most unique things about the reception were the party favors. With the help of my wonderful wedding planner, we set up jars of doggie biscuits for guests take home to their furry little friends. A donation was made in their name to C.A.R.A., the Community Animal Rescue League. As Will and I left the reception, we were showered with lavender rose petals. It was a night to remember.”

The Proposal “Jeremy arranged for his parents and my parents to eat dinner with us at Char that weekend. Jeremy came to my house in Ridgeland to pick me up for dinner and simply came in my room and asked me to be his wife. Nothing melodramatic or over-the-top, just simple and perfect.”

Their Story Charlotte and Jeremy chose a “Big Southern Wedding” laced with shabby chic accents and a bright yellow and slate gray color palate. The ceremony was performed in a traditional Episcopal wedding at St. Andrews Cathedral in downtown Jackson, keeping a family tradition since Charlotte’s parents and sister married there. For her gown, Charlotte chose a Monique Lhullier made of ivory silk organza featuring a strapless sweetheart neckline and asymmetrically pleated bodice. A platinum satin belt, centered with a cluster of mirror beads and pearls encircled the waistline from which the A-line skirt and chapel-length train of hand-cut wired swirls and rosettes, fell. At The South, the couple’s reception featured all their favorite food, including an Atlanta Braves section with mini Philly cheese steaks and mini hotdogs alongside a Braves-themed cake. “Pictures of Jeremy and his father’s trips to see the Braves were scattered throughout the section,” Charlotte said. “My cake was an exact replica of the skirt of my wedding gown, which featured large rosettes that cascaded to the floor. For our wedding favors, we had a white candy bar featuring splashes of red in honor of donations made to The American Red Cross in honor of each guest.” Throughout the reception venue were portraits of Charlotte and her two huge dogs, a nod to her beloved Newfoundlands. At the entrance of the reception, pictures of every family members’ weddings were framed and displayed. “As big Beatles fans, we danced our first dance to ‘My Love,’ by Paul McCartney. When we left the reception, our guests threw rose petals, and we were whisked away in a white limo to begin our honeymoon.”

Never cry over spilt champagne... Exploring the heights and pitfalls of wedding planning with Shanna Lumpkin

I

n the time of Pinterest, Facebook, countless wedding blogs and planning magazines, there is huge pressure on today’s brides to create something unique and oneof-a-kind for their wedding. Brides feel like they are under the microscope and hoping to “one up” their friends and contemporaries when creating the “perfect” wedding. As a wedding planner, it sounds a little contradictory for me to say this, but girls, trust me when I say… this is just one day. While it is my goal to help each of my brides create her dream wedding, I still want to remind them that this is not the end. This is the beginning! This June, my husband Brian and I were blessed to celebrate our ninth wedding anniversary. As my anniversary drew near simultaneously in the heart of planning season with my team - I started to reflect upon my own wedding. As important it was to me at the time, now nine years later I can barely remember what my favors were, or the designer of my bridesmaid’s dresses, the shape of the ice sculpture or the flavors of my wedding cake. What I do vividly remember is the look on my husband’s face when he saw me for the first time as I walked down the aisle to him, the people who chose to spend that weekend with us, the sweet words they said about my new husband and becoming his wife, and the memories we made on the dance floor. So this is what I wish for all of my brides - the ability to focus on what is truly important and what will matter ten, twenty, even fifty years from now. 1. Make a decision and move on. This sounds easier said than done. During the wedding planning process, there are hundreds upon hundreds of decisions that need to be made. Often brides get so caught up in these decisions that they lose sight of what is important. Some decisions are bigger than others: choosing your wedding date, the wedding colors, if you are going to see the groom beforehand for pictures or wait

until you walk down the aisle, first dance song, etc. My best advice is to listen to your heart (not your maid of honor or mom’s best friend) and make a decision. Once you start making the larger decisions, the smaller ones become more obvious. Then, once you make a decision, stick to your guns and move on. Second guessing yourself will drive you (and everyone else) crazy. 2. Keep your friends close. Your friends and family are excited for you and your fiancé and many of them have the very best of intentions. With that being said, I have seen so many friendships ruined, feelings hurt and wedges placed in the best of relationships. The best thing to do is be honest and gracious. The T-shirt that says, “Because I’m the Bride, That’s Why,” isn’t always the best philosophy. This doesn’t mean that you have to agree with all your friends or plan your wedding according to their desires; however, remember that these were your friends before your wedding and you want to still have them in your life for many years to come. 3. Stop asking for opinions. Many brides (and mothers) fall into the trap of constantly asking for opinions from others. There are many traps that you will fall into if you do this. First of all, you can’t please everyone, so don’t try. If you ask more than one person for his or her opinion, and they each have a different one, you cannot agree with everyone. Also, what happens if you don’t agree with them at all? The best things to do is to ask yourself what you really want for your wedding, and when your loved ones freely offer their unsolicited opinion … say thank you and move on. 4. Be gracious. It is so important to be gracious during the planning process, not only to your intimate circle of friends and family, but also to the countless number of people who are helping you. While vendors are working for you and are being paid for

their services, it is very likely that most will go above and beyond during some portion of the process to make sure your day is special. Consider this true story: When planning a wedding a couple years ago, we were ordering the bride’s thank-you notes, and I asked the mother-of-the-bride if she would also like to order her own set. When she asked why, I explained that she might like to have them to write a little note to vendors after the wedding. She replied, “Why would I waste my money on that? They should be writing thank you notes to me.” Being gracious means being appreciative of the efforts of others on your behalf. 5. Remember your groom. This is his day, too! And while he might not necessarily care what color the flowers or linens are, chances are he will appreciate that you asked his opinion. If anything, it will provide a wonderful opportunity for him to say, “Whatever you think, Sweet-

heart,” and for this, his thoughtfulness will endear him to you even more. 6. Don’t stress out about what you cannot control. Sadly, weddings sometimes bring out the worst in some people. Maybe your future mother-in-law is driving you crazy. Maybe your father and step-father don’t get along. Or maybe your maid of honor just broke off her engagement and is too bitter to attend your bridal showers. You can’t control other people’s behavior. All you can do is be nice to everyone and let them carry their own baggage. 7. Be realistic. Accept that there will be something that will go wrong at the wedding. As a wedding planner, we strive for perfection, but without fail, there will be something that will happen. It’s life. Whether it’s a whiny flower girl, a late grandmother or a groomsman who gets lost, it will give you something to laugh about later. Don’t let it ruin your day! MSW

The Proposal “Adam proposed in front of my grandparent’s beach house at sunset in Destin, Fla. It is our favorite place to be. We love the beach … on the beach, in the water or on a boat. Any chance we get to get away, we like to go there. We were actually on our way to Orlando for a work convention, and he timed it perfectly to stop half way at sunset to stay the night in Destin.” Their Story Nicki and Adam decided to get married at her parents’ Meridian home because she had always wanted an outdoor summer wedding... “and my mother had a dream years ago that I was married at her new home, therefore I wanted to go with her dream,” Nicki said. “It worked out perfect. Our wedding was romantic yet with a bold statement.” Instead of a “theme,” Nicki and Adam chose an array of purples, reds and dark pinks for the color scheme. “Bold colors, but I think they really stood out for an outdoor sunset wedding. Our favorite part was our reception. We wanted a big party to enjoy with all of our friends and family, and we definitely got it thanks to the wonderful Shanna Lumpkin and Wendy Putt, among others.” The flowers, decorations, food, outdoor lighting and “awesome” acrylic pool cover as the dance floor along with the “amazing” Nashville Bluetones created the perfect backdrop for a party celebration. “I could go on and on about the reception,” Nicki said. “It was so much fun. We didn’t even leave our reception until midnight. We still talk with our friends about how we all wish we could just have a party each summer with the Nashville Bluetones and the acrylic pool cover at the Murray residence.” For her gown, Nicki chose a strapless mermaid silhouette with a sweetheart neckline made of soft, light organza material. The dress featured a simple detail of a small cluster of white flowers on the hip. The bottom of the dress featured tiers of soft organza ruffles starting at the thigh and flowing to the ground. “It was simple, yet romantic.”

The Proposal

&

“It was spring break during our third year in medical school,” Sharon said. “He drove up from Jackson to pick me up at my parents’ house in Huntsville, Ala. We were going to meet some friends in Nashville, where we met and went to college at Vanderbilt. I did not know that he had driven up earlier so he could ask my dad in person for permission! We drove up to Nashville and the next morning, took a walk on Vanderbilt’s campus. We stopped at the bench where we first said “I love you.” It was a drizzly morning, but the sun began to break through. After eight amazing years together, Jay asked me to marry him and pulled out the most beautiful ring I’d ever seen. I was in shock and burst into tears, and of course I said ‘yes!’ We then went to brunch, where several of our best friends were waiting for us.” The dress “I bought my dress in a boutique in Madison, Ala., called Madison Town and Country. I went shopping with my mom. I tried on several dresses, but this one from the Jasmine Couture line made me feel exactly the way I envisioned myself on my wedding day,” Sharon said. “It was sweet, feminine and had just enough details without being overwhelming. It was ivory with a layer of dotted English lace on top with intricate beading. There were delicate scalloped lace straps and scalloped sweetheart neckline. And I loved the back of the dress, which dipped low with scalloped translucent lace edges. It had a chapel length train.” Their wedding “Our wedding combined elements from both of our heritages - my Chinese heritage and Jay’s Thai heritage. We incorporated color, food, music and traditions from both cultures,” Sharon said. “The day was extra special because we had so much family travel from all over the world to celebrate our day with us. We were humbled by the love that we felt from everyone.”

Real Mississippi Wedding The Proposal

Jason proposed on Christmas morning of 2010. After working a 12-hour shift, he accompanied Keishawn on a drive from Jackson to their home town of Natchez to spend the day with family. When the couple arrived in Natchez, Keishawn insisted on visiting Jason’s parents first, but Jason had other plans. They instead drove to her parents’ home. While opening gifts at the Williams home, Keishawn gave Jason with a classic Super Nintendo game set. “Jason then expressed his unconditional love to me while on one knee and presenting me with a beautiful diamond ring. The excitement of the morning was overwhelming.” Their Story “Our wedding was very traditional but elegant. The colors included black, ivory and an accent of red. The flower arrangements consisted of full red roses. My bridal bouquet was made of a full array of red roses wrapped with an ivory satin ribbon. The choice of music made the ceremony very spiritual. Music included songs “Because You Loved Me” for the entrance of the parents, “The Prayer” for the entrance of the wedding party, and “The One He Kept for Me” for the bride’s entrance. “The bridesmaids dresses were Forever Yours black and claret strapless gowns with straight necklines and tapered A-line skirts with a belt that had a bow and sash with streamers. The groomsmens attire was a very classic black tuxedo from Men’s Warehouse that included black shirts, red ties and red vests.” After the Catholic wedding ceremony the bride and groom joined their more than 300 guests at the reception that included dinner and dancing. The day ended with a final photo session at sunset overlooking the Mississippi River. The dress “My dress was an Allure Couture gown purchased from Imaginations Bridal of Brookhaven. This strapless ivory and silver ball gown featured a unique sweetheart neckline and corseted bodice embellished with embroidery and Swarovski crystals. The skirt had soft pick-up details accented with flowers.” 60

Real Mississippi Wedding The Proposal “It was late at night, and we were watching a movie at home. He pulled a small gift from a store bag. I opened the gift and the ring was inside. He asked if I would marry him and I said ‘yes!’”

Their Story Mayra Cisneros became Myra Cisneros Garcia in a Jim Hjelm Blush Collection of ivory cotton lace over a champagne charmeuse trumpet sleeveless bridal gown with a V neckline, open back and chapel train. The doors welcomed guests with four crème and white floral wreaths and hanging strands of vintage pearls and antique gold braiding. Pews were marked with crème peonies and hanging pearls and gold ornamentation. Florals at the church were romantic and soft with crème peonies and white ranunculus. The altar décor framed the stage beautifully with three clear pedestals and square vases with white flowers on top of each. Mimicking the bride’s bouquet, the arrangements were also laced with pearl beading and gold roping. The reception décor was as equally romantic with an added dramatic flair of vases of red roses, orchids and silver curly willows that extended towards the ceiling. Upon arriving, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour while the bride and groom completed photographs. They were then escorted to their tables for a coursed dinner of traditional American salad, Swiss almond chicken, cracked peppercorn roast beef, roasted asparagus and scalloped potatoes. The couple danced the night away under a canopy of paper lanterns. Later in the evening, the guests enjoyed late night sliders, french fries, grilled cheeses and fruit and cheese. The wedding cake was a stacked masterpiece of gold leaf and brocade featuring an oversized sugar flower bloom. “We really loved every detail about the wedding,” Mayra said. “We had a lot of fun in it. I cannot believe how much was accomplished in just a month. We really have to thank Shanna for fulfilling our wishes so wonderfully. She and her staff and everyone involved made our special day perfect.”

Real Mississippi Wedding The Proposal “Carey proposed while we were on vacation in Washington, D.C. I had taken a nap after a very long day of sight seeing and when I woke up, Carey had written ‘Will you marry me?’ on the mirror. I stood there in shock for what seemed like minutes. When I finally snapped back into reality, I looked over and he was down on one knee. I could not believe it was actually happening!” Their Story “Our wedding theme was inspired by the Southeast Asian Indian culture,” Senika said. “I have a love for the bright and bold colors that are prominent in that part of the world and wanted to bring that out in my wedding. Our colors were burnt orange and fuchsia which worked well for our summer wedding. We chose to add other elements that reflected an Indian vibe such as a draped ceiling, colorful candlelit lanterns, throw pillows, and fuchsia lighting. My fiance and I took on a lot of DIY projects, including custom making all of our stationary (invitations, water bottles, programs, reception cards, etc.) that incorporated our signature custom-made paisley/henna print. We made sure to orchestrate our theme in every element of the wedding from the decor, stationary, our henna print cake, and our signature drink which we named Arabian Sunrise. “For our ceremony, we went with a more simple approach. We were married outside, and I wanted my ceremony to be all white and for the reception to be a burst of color. So, we draped our arch in white fabric, lined the aisles in roses and white pomanders and added huge bundles of fluffy babies breath on each end of the aisle. Another way that we made the wedding our own was by incorporating our beloved Pomeranian. He is truly a part of our family. We dressed our tiny Kai in a little tux and had one of our ushers escort him down the aisle during the processional. Our guests loved it!” Shenika blogged her wedding planning to share her vision and DIY projects, www.journeytothealtar.com.

• •Shaking your money maker• • Family tradition sets the rules by jenny enderlin

A

ny subject which elicits stronger opinions in the South than college football ought

to be handled with as much care as one uses with Grandmother’s china. You’ve

certainly found this out if you’ve ever broached the subject of whether or not to have a money dance at your wedding since people tend to either love it or hate it. The ritual which has grown in popularity in recent years requires guests to line up at the reception and contribute a dollar or two in order to obtain a turn dancing with the bridal couple. The funds raised are typically used for spending money on the honeymoon or recouping the cost of wedding expenses. Sometimes the money is even seductively tucked into garments a-la-stripper style. It’s not that couples shouldn’t tailor the wedding to their own preferences. By all means, go ahead and wear that daring pink gown! Indulge in banana pudding instead of traditional wedding cake! Shimmy down the aisle to “Another One Bites the Dust” if you like! These are all things you’ve chosen for your own enjoyment. The money dance is different, though. As with the rest of the wedding, those who are paying get input, and in this case it’s the guests. Whether it flies or flops depends on their willingness to participate. At a Polish wedding I once attended, the money dance was a way for the bride and groom to ensure they had a chance to dance with each of their guests. People jumped out of their seats to get a turn and were having so much fun doing the polka that they kept hopping back in line. The band almost ran out of songs to play, and I’m pretty sure the exuberant group left the bride’s feet in a state of blisters. If your family has enjoyed this tradition for longer than anyone can remember, you absolutely should go for it! Historically, different versions of the money dance have been conducted in Eastern European, Mexican, and Filipino cultures for generations as a way to help young couples get established. At another reception at which I was present, however, the guests were obviously not acquainted with the money dance. The DJ first had to explain what it was and then practically had to beg people to join in while the couple stood on the dance floor waiting awkwardly. Because it typically falls outside of their tradition, Southern brides who opt to do the money dance risk facing blank stares. Some guests may get the impression that they are suddenly being asked to help pay for the wedding. You don’t want anyone feeling as though their attendance is a financial burden after you’ve formally invited them and they have graciously given gifts in return. If you are on the fence as to whether or not to have a money dance, ask yourself these questions: Am I doing this for the money or so that I have an enjoyable way to interact with

If the money dance is going to potentially offend anyone, just don’t do it. Then again, if your aunts can’t wait to get their hands on that handsome groom of yours, far be it from me to stand in their way! Ultimately, it’s best to stick with what makes your family and friends feel the most comfortable. Happy Weddings! Jenny

grand front porch between the large white columns, was a single line of cathedral candles in clear glass cylinder hurricane vases of varying heights. White wooden chairs were placed on the front lawn. Specialty lighting was used to illuminate the grounds of Cotesworth, which includes a 70-foot hand-bricked walkway leading up to the front steps. A red antique truck brought the groomsmen to the ceremony. Antique cars, some of which were used in the movie “The Help,” brought the bride’s attendants and the bride and her father.

As the guests left the ceremony area, they entered a candle lit path which led to the front door of the J.Z. George Law Library. The fivetiered bride’s cake was seated on an antique glass table and illuminated with custom lighting. Adjacent to the 160-year-old law library, guests entered a grand tent filled with decadent food displays of hand peeled shrimp, salad kabobs, posh squash, chilled chicken Alfredo, ham and biscuits and a potato bar. Guests enjoyed the groom’s favorite foods on the hand-bricked patio adjacent to the home - fried green tomatoes and catfish. Inside the home, tables were nestled into the two large front parlors. In the main dining room the “Harvest Table,” original to the home, was laden with silver platters of ham, tenderloin, eggplant, artichoke cheesecake, spinach Madeline, sweet potato biscuits and potato casserole. Lighted Mason jars, affixed to a wooden pallet, hung from the branches of an oak tree. A courtyard with large fire pits, torches and wrought iron furniture welcomed guests. A groom’s lounge was created in a tavern housing a handmade stone fireplace. The groom’s cake, homemade fudge, haystacks and divinity, were served on tiered dishes. A whole hog was displayed on a bed of roasted corn along with a variety of cheeses displayed in rustic fashion with wooden bowls and accessories. The evening ended with the newlywed couple departing in an antique Mustang. MSW
