Design Plan Connect Communities
From your chapter President, Felipe DeNarvaez
Dear Members and Distinguished Guests,
W
elcome to Our Annual Awards Celebration!
I am excited to be able to serve our membership as President of the St. Louis Chapter ASLA in 2016. There have been many positive activities, changes and accomplishments over the past years with this organization and I am looking forward to keeping that momentum going. First, I want to recognize our Past President and new Trustee, Scott Emmelkamp, for outstanding leadership during his term and his continued commitment to our chapter. Among many other things, he was instrumental in “spreading the word” and increasing public awareness of landscape architecture last year, with events like a bike tour with the AIA President, and the huge effort behind our ArchVision advocacy event. One of my objectives during my year as president will be to provide our membership with more continuing education opportunities, which we hope to accomplish through various channels, many with our allied professions like AIA, ASCE and APA, to name a few. Speaking of allied professions, I am also interested in continuing and growing our collaborative efforts with these group, through activities like: • Joint Allied Networking Event (Name TBD!) • AIA Jacobs Film Series • Sponsorship of USGBC and Shaw Series
I want to also recognize our Executive Director, Elizabeth Graff, for all of her efforts to keep the chapter up and running. She works tirelessly on our behalf and her passion for the profession shows in her continued dedication managing the day to day operations. Finally, I want to recognize the outstanding Executive Committee of our chapter. I am pleased to have such a diverse group of passionate leaders on the EXCOM that are truly invested in representing the best interests of the membership. For our members, I would like to thank you for your continued commitment and acknowledgment of the value that ASLA brings. Not only are we represented at a National level by our Society, we at the St. Louis chapter are always keeping you in mind when we Advocate at Jefferson City to protect our licensure, increasing public awareness and recognize the worldclass work our local firms are doing, which are at the center of tonight’s event. I look forward to the coming year, and encourage you to contact me anytime with suggestions or questions.
Felipe DeNarvaez, ASLA, PLA President, St. Louis ASLA
From your Past President and Current Trustee
M
y term as President of the St. Louis Chapter has ended but as I reflect on what our Chapter accomplished in 2015 I couldn’t be more proud of the efforts of our membership. We made it our mission to “Get the Word Out” about landscape architecture profession. With the help of our dedicated membership and executive committee I can say that our mission this year was a resounding success. On Sept. 21, 2015 the St. Louis Chapter organized an advocacy event called “ArchVision: Landscape Architecture Transforming a Landmark.” State Representatives and Senators were given a behind the scenes tour of the $380 million dollar Arch Grounds renovation project. The tour was followed by a CEU luncheon and keynote speech by Gullivar Shepard of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, the lead design firm on project. In attendance was St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay and Chad Danos, FASLA, PresidentElect ASLA National. At the event, special recognition was given to local business leader Walter Metcalfe, Jr. senior council for Bryan Cave, LLC for his selection as an Honorary ASLA member. Mr. Metcalfe was the driving force behind the Arch Grounds project. For World Landscape Architecture month in April the St. Louis Chapter organized a social media Photography Contest. Photographs of various topics and locations in the area that included the “Designed by a Landscape Architect” card were submitted. Overall there were 72
photographs entered via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram that received a total of 822 “Likes”. The top three entries received cash prizes. The St. Louis AIA and ASLA chapters teamed up to participate in the MLB “4-a-Greener Game” recycling program at a Cardinals and Cubs game. The volunteer group of allied professionals and family members collected plastic and aluminum cans for recycling between innings at Busch Stadium. Entry into the game was free and volunteers were able to watch the game. The efforts of both organizations were recognized on the scoreboard during the game. We partnered with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for the ASCE/ASLA Annual Golf Tournament again in 2015. The event was held at the beautiful Forest Park Golf Course. The golf tournament helps raise funds for programs and scholarships to educate youth about the roles of engineers and landscape architects and encourage students to pursue these professional careers. Thank you for the opportunity to lead such a great Chapter.
Scott Emmelkamp, ASLA, PLA, LEED AP Trustee, St. Louis ASLA/2015 Past President
A Message from the Outgoing Trustee
O
ur St. Louis Chapter is fortunate in so many ways. We are blessed in the number of hardworking volunteers we have every year. Most organizations are lucky to get 5-10 percent of their membership actively involved in any given year. We usually have over 25 percent of our membership actively volunteering. Thank you! Our chapter is so strong because of your hard work.
We are fortunate in that we accomplished so much as a Chapter and a national society this past year. At a national level, construction has started on the Center for Landscape Architecture. Once complete, our renovated headquarters in Washington DC will greatly raise awareness of our profession. We saw how ASLA’s green roof raised awareness of the profession, and the Center will build on those efforts. A big thank you to the firms and individuals who donated to make the Center a reality. At a local level, we’ve had so many highlights. The ArchVision event in September was a great opportunity to showcase the profession by recognizing Walter Metcalfe with an Honorary ASLA membership. We were honored to have Mayor Slay and ASLA national president-elect Chad Danos attend. The event showcased the
important work of landscape architects in transforming St. Louis, from Dan Kiley’s original vision to Michael Van Valkenburgh’s new plan.
As I wrap up my term as Trustee, I wanted to take a moment to thank the Chapter for allowing me to serve as your Trustee. It’s been an honor to serve the Chapter at a national level. We are blessed with so many talented leaders. From Randy Mardis, Gerry Biedenstein, and Hunter Beckham before me, with the excellent leadership of Scott Emmelkamp as the new trustee. Landscape Architecture is a great profession. We have many opportunities, but also challenges ahead. We must continuously evolve to continue being the leaders in the design and stewardship of our land and communities. As a society, as ASLA, we have the opportunity to have a greater collective impact to keep our profession at the forefront. Thank you for your continued support and involvement with ASLA.
Stephen Ibendahl, ASLA, RLA St. Louis ASLA Trustee 2013-2015
O
n Sept. 21, 2015, St. Louis ASLA played host to elected officials, allied professionals, landscape architects and other interested parties to celebrate the transformational power of landscape architecture as highlighted in the Gateway Arch grounds project. Some highlights: • Elected officials got a behind-the-scenes tour of the project, led by members of the design and construction teams. • HOK played host to the ArchVision luncheon and keynote by MVVA’s Gullivar Shepard; attended by nearly 85 people. • Walter Metcalfe received a key to the city from Mayor Francis Slay, and a plaque commemorating his honorary ASLA status. • VP of Advocacy Susan Maag received special recognition for all her efforts supporting the profession • The event and Mr. Metcalfe’s honor were written up in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
You are encouraged to look at the professional photography taken at the event, which can be viewed at www.stlouisasla.org. A huge thank you to the volunteers and attendees who made this event a success, especially event supporters CityArchRiver, NPS, Great Rivers Greenway and St. Louis Design Week. It was even recognized by ASLA national as a successful “grassroots advocacy” effort. An additional note of thanks goes to event organizers Susan Maag, Stephen Ibendahl, Scott Emmelkamp and Elizabeth Graff. It was a coordinated effort to organize, manage and get the distinguished guests to attend, and it all thanks to the oustanding commitment to advocating for our profession. Three cheers for the transformational power of Landscape Architecture, and it’s ability to connect communities, stimulate economies and create beautiful outdoor spaces!

Mary Ostafi/Urban Harvest STL
U
rban harvest STL, in collaboration with the community, provides equitable access to local, healthy, sustainably grown food and enriches lives through environmental and educational experiences. They envision vibrant cities where underutilized spaces are transformed into productive urban farms supporting underserved communities. This is manifested through community based agricultural projects that stimulate biodiversity and nurture a positive quality of life to its inhabitants and their environment. One of the organization’s primary efforts, the FOOD ROOF, has brought urban farming and sustainable planting practices to the forefront, not only in St. Louis, but also on a national stage. Mary has spoken twice at the national ASLA conference (alongside two landscape architects) and produced
a TEDx talk entitled “Growing Food Where We Live.” Her efforts were also featured in the New York Times last year. Urban Harvest hosts several local schools for educational efforts on sustainable farming on its FOOD ROOF, and leases out space to downtown residents who want to grow food in while living in an urban setting. In 2015, Mary left her job in Washington University’s Sustainability Office to be the nonprofit’s full time Executive Director, traveling frequently to speak and educate audiences about the value in rooftop and urban farming. Mary and Urban Harvest STL have been altruistic ambassadors of the natural and built environment since their founding. It’s with great enthusiasm that our chapter give them the Civic Stewardship award.

STUDENT HONOR AWARD > Jingcheng Wu
Metamorphosis The site, located in a downtown St. Louis neighborhood, connects the Gateway Arch Ground and Chouteau’s Landing, once a prosperous industrial area but now largely abandoned. The project aims at revitalizing these underutilized spaces beneath the highway interchanges and abandoned areas and an opportunity to rethink blighted and underutilized areas. Specific proposal includes introducing three productive landscape systems - compost field, nursery and wood farm into the site. This creates a link between the site and the surroundings environment and a change to engage the community.
STUDENT MERIT AWARD > Shelbey Sill
Tortured Topographies: The Process of Exposing Layers of “Stuckness” The objective of this project is to expose the contaminated site history from the past the present. Situated on the Pruitt-Igoe site, currently a dumping ground for demolition debris and waste. The process of dumping and layering was approached with a ‘cut’ process, exposing the layers. Then the ‘fill’ allowed an impactful and dramatic shift of the earth, allowing visitors a greater understanding of the past, present and future of this site.
STUDENT MERIT AWARD > Shuying Wu Minimum to Maximum
This project consists of several design interventions that transform a derelict site within Chouteau’s Landing into a revitalized and viable area. The main intervention includes a series of tall red masts that receive and send feed back within social situations and also to attract the Monarch Butterfly to improve habitat.
