Faithful God, have mercy on us your unworthy servants, and increase our faith, that, trusting in your Spirit’s power to work in us and through us, we may never be ashamed to witness to our Lord but may obediently serve him all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

masters, her enemies prosper, because the Lord has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the psalm.

PSALM 137

Lamentations 1.1-6 How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting-place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. Her foes have become the

1 By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept: when we remembered Zion. 2 As for our harps we hung them up: upon the trees that are in that land. 3 For there those who led us away captive required of us a song: and those who had despoiled us demanded mirth, saying ‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion.’ 4 How can we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land? 5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem: let my right hand forget its mastery. 6 Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth: if I do not remember you, if I do not prefer Jerusalem above my chief joy.

Mass Readings 7 Remember, O Lord, against the Edomites the day of Jerusalem: how they said ‘Down with it, down with it, raze it to its foundations.’ 8 O daughter of Babylon, you that lay waste: happy shall he be who serves you as you have served us; 9 Happy shall he be who takes your little ones: and dashes them against the stones.

sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him. Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

OFFERTORY SENTENCE

Father, receive these gifts which our Lord Jesus Christ has asked us to offer in his memory. May our obedient service bring us to the fullness of your redemption.

COMMUNION SENTENCE 1 Corinthians 10.17

Because there is one bread, we, though many, are one body, for we all share in the one loaf and in the one cup.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

2 Timothy 1.1-14 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I am grateful to God – whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did – when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher, and for this reason I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am 4

Mass readings

1 Peter 1.25

Alleluia. The word of the Lord stands forever; it is the word given to you, the Good News. (1 Peter 1.25) Alleluia!

By the waters, the waters of Babylon, we sat down and wept, and wept for Zion. We remember, we remember, we remember Zion.

Text Psalm 137

Gospel

Luke 17.5-10 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ The Lord replied, ‘If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea,” and it would obey you. Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from ploughing or tending sheep in the field, “Come here at once and take your place at the table”? Would you not rather say to him, “Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink”? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, “We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!”’ This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Youth Ministry Leader As we give thanks to God for our Sunday School and ministry with children, the Parish Council has resolved to establish a new part-time position focusing on youth ministry. It is hoped that a suitable person can join our ministry team to oversee the continued development of our Sunday School and a broader range of activities involving young people in the parish. Please contact the parish office if you would like more information. Applications for this position close at the end of October.

Following Morning Prayer, Fr Bernard McGrath OSB will address us and later in the morning Fr John Sanderson will celebrate the Eucharist. The day concludes with Taizé worship in the afternoon. There will be time for reflection and to explore the labyrinth (based on the design at Chartres Cathedral). Bring your own picnic lunch to enjoy in the grounds. Our Lady of Walsingham The feast of Our Lady of Walsingham will be observed on Saturday 22 October. Sung Mass with the Gregorian Schola will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Mass will be followed by a buffet brunch in the hall, and a Marian Lecture. We will conclude with the Angelus at about noon. Following on from last year’s well received lecture by Sr Isabell Naumann, of the Roman Catholic Seminary of the Good Shepherd, this year’s lecture, from an Orthodox perspective, will be given by the Very Rev’d Dr Doru Costache. Dr Costache is a protopresbyter of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. He is a Doctor of Theology from the University of Bucharest and lectures in patristic studies at St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College.

Solemn Evensong and Te Deum This year marks the 500th anniversary of the first printed publication of the Greek New Testament in 1516. This edition was prepared by Desiderius Erasmus and published in Basel, Switzerland. Later editions of Erasmus’ text became the basis for English translations, such as Tyndale’s and the King James Bible. This anniversary— together with the 550th anniversary of Erasmus’ birth on 27 October 1466— will be celebrated with Evensong and a Te Deum on 30 October. The preacher will be our regional bishop, the Rt Rev’d Dr Michael Stead, who is himself a noted Biblical scholar.

SUNDAY NOTICES

Anglican Board of Mission Monthly Retiring Collection for September, October and November Myanmar: Doctorate Sponsorship Program Nant Hnin Hnin Aye (Snow) ABM is supporting a postgraduate scholarship at Trinity College in Melbourne for a theology student from Myanmar. In partnership with the Church in the Province of Myanmar, ABM is delighted that Nant Hnin Hnin Aye (Snow) will be the first recipient of the scholarship. Snow will study for a doctorate in New Testament studies, specifically looking at how Jesus redefined the social and cultural norms of his day, as described in Luke’s gospel. Given Myanmar’s particular political context, she will focus on the application of Jesus’ teachings to the reality of marginalised groups in Myanmar today. Snow is hoping to be a role model and set a trend for Anglican women theologians in Myanmar. Snow grew up in Yangon City, and lives with her parents and brothers. Her family members joyfully serve different roles in the ministry there, though it is not easy with political, social and financial challenges. Snow works as a lecturer in the New Testament at the Holy Cross Theological College, serves as a member of different committees at the college, is the personal assistant to the Principal and is also a member of the Anglican Research Centre. She would like to study a doctorate degree in Australia to enhance her theological understanding to benefit her work, Holy Cross Theological College, and women in general. Snow is committed to being an example to other women in Myanmar to show them what they are capable of achieving. Women are only afforded the opportunity to study if an organisation or school offers to sponsor them. She would like to encourage younger women to prove that they are capable in ministry. Snow says she would like “to see 100% opportunity for women in educational area. The more educated women we have the new generation will build healthy community with positive approach.”
